Chapter 1

1:1O the blessedness of the man who has not walked in the counsel of the wicked, and has not stood in the way of sinners, and has not sat in the seat of scoffers;
1:2but his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.
1:3He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season; its leaf does not wither, and in all that he does he prospers.
1:4The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
1:5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
1:6For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Chapter 2

2:1Why do the nations rage, and the peoples meditate on vanity?
2:2The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His Anointed One:
2:3“Let us tear off Their bonds and cast away Their cords from us.”
2:4He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
2:5Then He speaks to them in His anger and terrifies them in His wrath:
2:6“But I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill.”
2:7I will declare the decree: the LORD said to Me, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You.
2:8Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth Your possession.
2:9You will rule them with an iron scepter; You will shatter them like a potter’s vessel.”
2:10And now, O kings, act wisely; receive instruction, O judges of the earth.
2:11Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
2:12Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you perish in the way, for His anger is quickly kindled. O the blessedness of all who seek refuge in Him!

Chapter 3

3:1A PSALM OF DAVID, WHEN HE FLED FROM ABSALOM HIS SON.
3:2O LORD, how many are my adversaries! Many rise up against me.
3:3Many say concerning me, “There is no salvation for him in God.” Interlude.
3:4But You, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head.
3:5I call to the LORD with my voice, and He answers me from His holy hill. Interlude.
3:6I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustains me.
3:7I will not fear myriads of people who have set themselves against me all around.
3:8Arise, O LORD! Save me, my God! For You have struck all my enemies on the cheek; You have broken the teeth of the wicked.
3:9Salvation belongs to the LORD; Your blessing is upon Your people! Interlude.

Chapter 4

4:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. WITH STRINGED INSTRUMENTS. A PSALM OF DAVID.
4:2Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness. In distress You have given me room; favor me and hear my prayer.
4:3O sons of men, how long will my glory be turned to shame? How long will you love vanity and seek falsehood? Interlude.
4:4Know that the LORD has set apart the faithful one for Himself; the LORD hears when I call to Him.
4:5Tremble and do not sin; speak in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Interlude.
4:6Offer righteous sacrifices, and trust in the LORD.
4:7Many say, “Who will show us good?” Lift up the light of Your face upon us, O LORD.
4:8You have put more joy in my heart than when their grain and new wine abound.
4:9In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell securely.

Chapter 5

5:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. WITH THE PIPES. A PSALM OF DAVID.
5:2Give ear to my words, O LORD; understand my groaning.
5:3Attend to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I pray.
5:4O LORD, in the morning You hear my voice; in the morning I set my prayer before You and watch expectantly.
5:5For You are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil does not dwell with You.
5:6The boastful do not station themselves before Your eyes; You have hated all workers of iniquity.
5:7You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
5:8But I, in the abundance of Your steadfast love, enter Your house; I bow myself toward Your holy temple in Your fear.
5:9O LORD, lead me in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before me.
5:10For there is no truth in their mouth; their inward part is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they make their tongue smooth.
5:11Declare them guilty, O God; let them fall by their own counsels. In the abundance of their transgressions drive them away, because they have rebelled against You.
5:12Then all who trust in You rejoice; they sing forever, for You shelter them. Those who love Your Name exult in You.
5:13For You bless the righteous, O LORD; You surround him with favor as with a shield.

Chapter 6

6:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. WITH STRINGED INSTRUMENTS, FOR THE LOWER OCTAVE. A PSALM OF DAVID.
6:2O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger, nor discipline me in Your wrath.
6:3Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am weak; heal me, O LORD, for my bones are troubled,
6:4and my soul is greatly troubled. But You, O LORD—how long?
6:5Return, O LORD; rescue my life. Save me for Your steadfast love’s sake.
6:6For in death there is no memorial of You; in the realm of the dead, who gives thanks to You?
6:7I am weary with my sighing; all night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears.
6:8My eye wastes away from grief; it grows weak because of all my adversaries.
6:9Turn from me, all you workers of iniquity, for the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping.
6:10The LORD has heard my supplication; the LORD receives my prayer.
6:11All my enemies are greatly ashamed and troubled; they turn back, ashamed in a moment.

Chapter 7

7:1A WANDERING SONG OF DAVID, WHICH HE SANG TO THE LORD CONCERNING THE WORDS OF CUSH, A BENJAMITE.
7:2O LORD my God, in You I have sought refuge; save me from all my pursuers, and deliver me,
7:3lest he tear my life like a lion, dragging me away with none to deliver.
7:4O LORD my God, if I have done this, if there is iniquity in my hands,
7:5if I have repaid my friend with evil, or plundered my adversary without cause,
7:6Then let an enemy pursue my life and overtake it; let him trample my life to the earth, and place my glory in the dust. Interlude.
7:7Rise, O LORD, in Your anger; lift Yourself up against the fury of my adversaries, and awake for me. You have commanded judgment.
7:8And a congregation of peoples shall surround You; and over it return on high.
7:9The LORD judges the peoples; judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to my integrity that is upon me.
7:10Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and establish the righteous, for the righteous God tests hearts and inward parts.
7:11My shield rests with God, who saves the upright in heart.
7:12God is a righteous judge, and a God who has indignation every day.
7:13If one does not turn, He sharpens His sword; He has bent His bow and prepared it.
7:14Indeed, He has prepared for Himself instruments of death; He makes His arrows for burning pursuers.
7:15Behold, he travails with wickedness; he has conceived evil, and has brought forth falsehood.
7:16He dug a pit and hollowed it out, but he falls into the ditch he made.
7:17His perverseness returns upon his own head, and his violence comes down upon his crown.
7:18I thank the LORD according to His righteousness, and I sing to the Name of the LORD Most High.

Chapter 8

8:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. ON THE GITTITE INSTRUMENT. A PSALM OF DAVID.
8:2O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your Name in all the earth, You who have set Your splendor upon the heavens!
8:3From the mouths of infants and nursing children You have established strength because of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and the avenger.
8:4When I see Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and stars that You established,
8:5what is man, that You remember him, or the son of man, that You care for him?
8:6Yet You made him a little lower than God—or the gods—and crowned him with glory and majesty.
8:7You cause him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have placed all things under his feet:
8:8Sheep and oxen, all of them, and also the beasts of the field,
8:9The bird of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, passing through the paths of the seas.
8:10O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your Name in all the earth!

Chapter 9

9:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. SET TO “DEATH OF THE SON.” A PSALM OF DAVID.
9:2I confess You, O LORD, with all my heart; I recount all Your wonders.
9:3I rejoice and exult in You; I sing Your Name, O Most High.
9:4When my enemies turn backward, they stumble and perish from Your face.
9:5For You have upheld my judgment and my cause; You have sat on the throne, judging righteously.
9:6You have rebuked nations; You have destroyed the wicked; You have blotted out their name forever and forever.
9:7The enemy has come to an end in everlasting ruins; You have uprooted cities; their memory has perished with them.
9:8But the LORD abides forever; He prepares His throne for judgment.
9:9And He judges the world in righteousness; He judges the peoples in uprightness.
9:10The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of adversity.
9:11And those who know Your Name trust in You, for You have not forsaken those who seek You, O LORD.
9:12Sing praise to the LORD, who dwells in Zion; declare His acts among the peoples.
9:13For He who avenges blood remembers them; He does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
9:14Favor me, O LORD; see my affliction from those who hate me, You who lift me up from the gates of death,
9:15So that I may recount all Your praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion. I rejoice in Your salvation.
9:16Nations have sunk in the pit they made; their foot has been captured in the net they hid.
9:17The LORD has made Himself known; He has executed judgment. The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Meditation. Interlude.
9:18The wicked return to the realm of the dead, all nations forgetting God.
9:19For the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor shall the hope of the humble perish forever.
9:20Rise, O LORD; do not let man be strong. Let nations be judged before Your face.
9:21Put fear into them, O LORD; let the nations know they are only men. Interlude.

Chapter 10

10:1Why, O LORD, do You stand at a distance? Why do You hide in times of adversity?
10:2Through the pride of the wicked the poor is inflamed; they are caught in schemes that they devised.
10:3For the wicked boasts of the desire of his soul; he blesses the greedy and despises the LORD.
10:4In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek Him; “There is no God” is the sum of his schemes.
10:5His ways prosper at all times; Your judgments are high above his sight; as for all his adversaries, he scoffs at them.
10:6He has said in his heart, “I am not moved; from generation to generation I am not in calamity.”
10:7His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and oppression; under his tongue are trouble and wickedness.
10:8He dwells in the ambush of the villages; in secret places he kills the innocent. His eyes secretly watch for the afflicted.
10:9He lies in wait in a secret place, as a lion in a covert. He lies in wait to catch the poor; he catches the poor, drawing him into his net.
10:10He crouches and bows down, and the afflicted fall by his might.
10:11He has said in his heart, “God has forgotten; He has hidden His face; He has never seen.”
10:12Arise, O LORD! O God, lift up Your hand. Do not forget the humble.
10:13Why does the wicked despise God? He says in his heart, “You will not require it.”
10:14You have seen it, for You behold trouble and provocation, to take it into Your hand. The afflicted entrusts himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan.
10:15Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; seek out his wickedness until You find none.
10:16The LORD is King forever and forever; the nations have perished out of His land.
10:17You have heard the desire of the humble, O LORD; You prepare their heart; You cause Your ear to attend,
10:18to judge the orphan and the oppressed, so that man of the earth may terrify no more.

Chapter 11

11:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. BY DAVID. In the LORD I have sought refuge; how can you say to my soul, “Flee to your mountain like a bird”?
11:2For behold, the wicked bend the bow; they have prepared their arrow upon the string, to shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
11:3When the foundations are destroyed, what has the righteous done?
11:4The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD—His throne is in the heavens. His eyes see; His eyelids test the sons of men.
11:5The LORD tries the righteous; but the wicked and the lover of violence He hates.
11:6He rains snares upon the wicked; fire and sulfur and a scorching wind are the portion of their cup.
11:7For the LORD is righteous; He has loved righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.

Chapter 12

12:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. FOR THE LOWER OCTAVE. A PSALM OF DAVID.
12:2Save, O LORD, for the faithful one is gone; the faithful have vanished from among the sons of men.
12:3They speak falsehood, each with his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
12:4May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that speaks great things,
12:5Who said, “By our tongue we do mightily; our lips are our own; who is lord over us?”
12:6“Because of the spoiling of the poor, because of the groaning of the needy, now I arise,” says the LORD; “I set in safety him who breathes for it.”
12:7The sayings of the LORD are pure sayings—silver tried in a furnace of earth, refined sevenfold.
12:8You, O LORD, preserve them; You keep us from this generation forever.
12:9The wicked walk around continually, when vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

Chapter 13

13:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID.
13:2How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?
13:3How long must I take counsel in my soul, with sorrow in my heart all day? How long will my enemy be exalted over me?
13:4Look upon me and answer me, O LORD my God; give light to my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
13:5Lest my enemy say, “I have overcome him,” and my adversaries rejoice when I am moved.
13:6And I sing to the LORD, for He has conferred benefits upon me.

Chapter 14

14:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. BY DAVID. The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; they have done abominable deeds; there is none who does good.
14:2The LORD has looked from the heavens upon the sons of men, to see if there is a wise one, seeking God.
14:3They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt. There is none who does good, not even one.
14:4Have all workers of wickedness not known? Those consuming my people have eaten food; they have not called upon the LORD.
14:5There they feared a fear, for God is in the generation of the righteous.
14:6You make the counsel of the poor stink, because the LORD is his refuge.
14:7Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of His people, Jacob rejoices; Israel is glad.

Chapter 15

15:1A PSALM OF DAVID. O LORD, who sojourns in Your tent? Who dwells on Your holy hill?
15:2He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart.
15:3He has not slandered with his tongue; he has not done evil to his friend, and has not lifted up reproach against his neighbor.
15:4In his eyes a rejected one is despised, but he honors those who fear the LORD. He swears to his own hurt and does not change.
15:5He does not lend his silver at interest, and does not take a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things shall never be moved.

Chapter 16

16:1AN INSCRIPTION OF DAVID. Preserve me, O God, for I have sought refuge in You.
16:2I have said to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from You.”
16:3As for the holy ones who are in the land, and the honorable, all my delight is in them.
16:4The sorrows of those who hurry after another god shall multiply; I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood, nor take their names upon my lips.
16:5The LORD is the portion of my share and of my cup; You uphold my lot.
16:6The boundary lines have fallen for me in good places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
16:7I bless the LORD who counsels me; even at night my inward parts instruct me.
16:8I have placed the LORD before me continually; because He is at my right hand, I am not moved.
16:9Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; my flesh also dwells securely.
16:10For You shall not leave my soul to the realm of the dead, nor give Your Holy One to see corruption.
16:11You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forever.

Chapter 17

17:1A PRAYER OF DAVID. Hear a righteous cause, O LORD; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer from lips without deceit.
17:2Let my judgment go out from Your presence; let Your eyes see uprightly.
17:3You have tested my heart; You have visited me by night; You have tried me and find nothing. My mouth shall not transgress.
17:4As for the doings of man, by the word of Your lips I have observed the paths of a destroyer.
17:5Uphold my goings in Your paths; my steps have not slipped.
17:6I have called You, for You answer me, O God; incline Your ear to me, hear my word.
17:7Show Your steadfast love wondrously, O Savior of those who seek refuge at Your right hand from those who rise against them.
17:8Keep me as the pupil, the daughter of the eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings,
17:9From before the wicked who spoil me, from my deadly enemies who go around against me.
17:10They have closed their hearts in fatness; with their mouths they speak proudly.
17:11Now they have surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to turn aside in the land.
17:12His likeness is as a lion desirous to tear, as a young lion dwelling in secret places.
17:13Arise, O LORD; confront him and make him bow down. Deliver my life from the wicked by Your sword,
17:14From men by Your hand, O LORD, from men of the world whose portion is in life. With Your hidden things You fill their belly; they are satisfied with sons, and leave their abundance to their sucklings.
17:15I—in righteousness I shall see Your face; I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Your form.

Chapter 18

18:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. BY A SERVANT OF THE LORD, BY DAVID, WHO SPOKE TO THE LORD THE WORDS OF THIS SONG IN THE DAY THE LORD DELIVERED HIM FROM THE POWER OF ALL HIS ENEMIES, AND FROM THE HAND OF SAUL; AND HE SAID:
18:2I love You, O LORD, my strength.
18:3The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock; I seek refuge in Him: my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
18:4I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
18:5Cords of death surrounded me, and torrents of destruction terrified me.
18:6Cords of the realm of the dead have surrounded me; snares of death have been before me.
18:7In my distress I call upon the LORD, and I cry to my God. He hears my voice from His temple, and my cry comes before Him into His ears.
18:8Then the earth shakes and trembles; the foundations of the mountains are troubled, and they shake, because He has wrath.
18:9Smoke ascended from His nostrils, and fire from His mouth consumed; coals were kindled by it.
18:10Then He inclined the heavens and came down, and thick darkness was under His feet.
18:11Then He rode upon a winged guardian and flew; He soared upon the wings of the wind.
18:12He made darkness His hiding place; His pavilion around Him was dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
18:13From the brightness before Him His thick clouds passed on: hail and coals of fire.
18:14And the LORD thundered in the heavens; the Most High gave forth His voice: hail and coals of fire.
18:15Then He sent His arrows and scattered them; and much lightning, and crushed them.
18:16Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at Your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.
18:17He sent from above and took me; He drew me out of many waters.
18:18He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hate me, for they were stronger than I.
18:19They came before me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.
18:20He brought me forth into a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me.
18:21The LORD repays me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands, He returns to me.
18:22For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not done wickedly against my God.
18:23For all His judgments are before me, and I do not turn His statutes from me.
18:24I was blameless with Him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.
18:25And the LORD returns to me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands before His eyes.
18:26With the kind You show Yourself kind; with the blameless man You show Yourself blameless.
18:27With the pure You show Yourself pure; and with the crooked You show Yourself shrewd.
18:28For You save a poor people, and cause the eyes of the high to fall.
18:29For You light my lamp; the LORD my God enlightens my darkness.
18:30For by You I run against a troop, and by my God I leap over a wall.
18:31As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is refined. He is a shield to all who seek refuge in Him.
18:32For who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock except our God?
18:33God girds me with strength and makes my way blameless.
18:34He makes my feet like those of a doe and causes me to stand upon my high places.
18:35He trains my hands for battle, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
18:36You have given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand supports me, and Your gentleness makes me great.
18:37You enlarge my step under me, and my ankles have not slipped.
18:38I pursue my enemies and overtake them; I do not return until they are consumed.
18:39I strike them, and they are not able to rise; they fall under my feet.
18:40You girded me with strength for battle; You made those who rose against me bow beneath me.
18:41You made my enemies turn their backs to me, and I cut off those who hated me.
18:42They cried for help, but there was no savior; they cried to the LORD, but He did not answer them.
18:43Then I beat them fine as dust before the wind; I poured them out like mire in the streets.
18:44You deliver me from the strivings of the people; You place me for a head of nations; a people I have not known serve me.
18:45At the hearing of the ear they obey me; foreigners feign obedience to me.
18:46Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their strongholds.
18:47The LORD lives, and blessed is my rock; exalted is the God of my salvation.
18:48God—who gives vengeance to me, and subdues peoples under me,
18:49My deliverer from my enemies. You raise me above my opponents; You deliver me from a man of violence.
18:50Therefore I give thanks to You among nations, O LORD, and I sing praise to Your Name,
18:51He magnifies the salvation of His king and shows steadfast love to His Anointed One, to David and to his seed forever.

Chapter 19

19:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID.
19:2The heavens recount the glory of God, and the expanse declares the work of His hands.
19:3Day pours out speech to day, and night reveals knowledge to night.
19:4There is no speech, and there are no words; their voice is not heard.
19:5Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tent for the sun,
19:6Which comes out like a bridegroom from his chamber and rejoices like a mighty man to run his course.
19:7Its rising is from one end of the heavens, and its circuit to the other end; nothing is hidden from its heat.
19:8The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making the simple wise.
19:9The precepts of the LORD are upright, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
19:10The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the LORD are true; they are altogether righteous.
19:11They are more desirable than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
19:12Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
19:13Who can understand his errors? Clear me from hidden faults.
19:14Also keep Your servant back from presumptuous sins; let them not rule over me. Then I shall be blameless and innocent of great transgression.
19:15Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before You, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Chapter 20

20:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID.
20:2May the LORD answer you in the day of distress; may the Name of the God of Jacob set you securely on high.
20:3May He send you help from the sanctuary and support you from Zion.
20:4May He remember all your offerings and accept your burnt offering. Interlude.
20:5May He grant you according to your heart and fulfill all your plans.
20:6We will sing for joy over your salvation, and in the Name of our God we will raise our banners. May the LORD fulfill all your requests.
20:7Now I know that the LORD has saved His anointed; He answers him from His holy heavens with the saving might of His right hand.
20:8Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the Name of the LORD our God.
20:9They have bowed down and fallen, but we have risen and stand upright.
20:10O LORD, save! May the King answer us on the day we call.

Chapter 21

21:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID.
21:2O LORD, in Your strength the king rejoices, and in Your salvation how greatly he exults!
21:3You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Interlude.
21:4For You meet him with blessings of goodness; You set a crown of fine gold upon his head.
21:5He asked life of You; You gave it to him—length of days forever and ever.
21:6His glory is great through Your salvation; You lay splendor and majesty upon him.
21:7For You make him a blessing forever; You gladden him with joy in Your presence.
21:8For the king trusts in the LORD, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he will not be moved.
21:9Your hand will find all Your enemies; Your right hand will find those who hate You.
21:10You will make them like a fiery furnace at the time of Your presence. The LORD will swallow them up in His anger, and fire will devour them.
21:11You will destroy their fruit from the earth, and their seed from among the sons of men.
21:12For they intended evil against You; they devised a scheme they cannot carry out.
21:13For You will make them turn their backs; You will aim Your bowstrings at their faces.
21:14Be exalted, O LORD, in Your strength; we will sing and praise Your might.

Chapter 22

22:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. SET TO “DOE OF THE MORNING.” A PSALM OF DAVID.
22:2My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You far from saving Me, far from the words of My groaning?
22:3My God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; and by night, yet I have no rest.
22:4Yet You are holy, enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
22:5In You our fathers trusted; they trusted, and You delivered them.
22:6To You they cried and were delivered; in You they trusted and were not put to shame.
22:7But I am a worm and not a man, a reproach of men and despised by the people.
22:8All who see Me mock Me; they sneer with the lip and shake the head:
22:9“Commit Yourself to the LORD! Let Him deliver Him; let Him rescue Him, since He delights in Him.”
22:10For You are He who brought Me out of the womb; You made Me trust at My mother’s breasts.
22:11Upon You I was cast from the womb; from My mother’s belly You have been My God.
22:12Do not be far from Me, for distress is near, and there is no helper.
22:13Many bulls surround Me; mighty bulls of Bashan encircle Me.
22:14They open their mouths wide against Me, like a tearing and roaring lion.
22:15I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it melts within Me.
22:16My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws; You lay Me in the dust of death.
22:17For dogs surround Me; a company of evildoers encircles Me; they pierced My hands and My feet.
22:18I can count all My bones; they stare, they gaze upon Me.
22:19They divide My garments among them and cast lots for My clothing.
22:20But You, O LORD, do not be far off; O My strength, hasten to help Me.
22:21Deliver My life from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog.
22:22Save Me from the lion’s mouth; from the horns of the wild oxen You have answered Me.
22:23I will declare Your Name to My brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
22:24You who fear the LORD, praise Him! All the seed of Jacob, honor Him; stand in awe of Him, all you seed of Israel.
22:25For He has not despised or detested the affliction of the afflicted, nor hidden His face from Him; but when He cried to Him, He heard.
22:26From You comes My praise in the great assembly; I will fulfill My vows before those who fear Him.
22:27The humble will eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him will praise the LORD. May your heart live forever.
22:28All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before You.
22:29For the kingdom belongs to the LORD, and He rules over the nations.
22:30All the prosperous of the earth will eat and bow down; all who go down to the dust will bow before Him—even he who cannot keep his soul alive.
22:31A seed will serve Him; the coming generation will be told of the Lord.
22:32They will come and declare His righteousness to a people yet to be born—that He has done it.

Chapter 23

23:1A PSALM OF DAVID. The LORD is my shepherd; I lack nothing.
23:2He makes me lie down in pastures of tender grass; He leads me beside quiet waters.
23:3He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake.
23:4Even when I walk in a valley of death-shade, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
23:5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my adversaries; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
23:6Surely goodness and steadfast love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for length of days.

Chapter 24

24:1A PSALM OF DAVID. The earth and its fullness belong to the LORD, the world and those who dwell in it.
24:2For He founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.
24:3Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? And who may stand in His holy place?
24:4He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood nor sworn deceitfully.
24:5He will receive blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
24:6Such is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face—Jacob. Interlude.
24:7Lift up your heads, O gates, and be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of Glory may come in.
24:8Who is this King of Glory? The LORD, strong and mighty; the LORD, mighty in battle.
24:9Lift up your heads, O gates, and be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of Glory may come in.
24:10Who is He, this King of Glory? The LORD of Hosts—He is the King of Glory. Interlude.

Chapter 25

25:1BY DAVID. To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul.
25:2My God, in You I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me.
25:3Indeed, none who wait for You will be put to shame; those who deal treacherously without cause will be put to shame.
25:4Make me know Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths.
25:5Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all the day.
25:6Remember Your compassions, O LORD, and Your steadfast love, for they are from of old.
25:7Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to Your steadfast love remember me, for Your goodness’ sake, O LORD.
25:8Good and upright is the LORD; therefore He instructs sinners in the way.
25:9He leads the humble in justice and teaches the humble His way.
25:10All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.
25:11For Your Name’s sake, O LORD, pardon my iniquity, for it is great.
25:12Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the way he should choose.
25:13His soul will dwell in well-being, and his seed will possess the land.
25:14The secret counsel of the LORD is for those who fear Him, and His covenant He makes known to them.
25:15My eyes are continually toward the LORD, for He will bring my feet out of the net.
25:16Turn to me and favor me, for I am lonely and afflicted.
25:17The distresses of my heart have multiplied; bring me out of my troubles.
25:18See my affliction and my toil, and forgive all my sins.
25:19See my enemies, for they are many, and they hate me with violent hatred.
25:20Guard my life and deliver me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in You.
25:21May integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for You.
25:22Redeem Israel, O God, from all his troubles.

Chapter 26

26:1BY DAVID. Judge me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity; I have trusted in the LORD without wavering.
26:2Examine me, O LORD, and test me; refine my inmost being and my heart.
26:3For Your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I have walked in Your truth.
26:4I have not sat with men of falsehood, nor do I enter with pretenders.
26:5I have hated the assembly of evildoers, and I do not dwell with the wicked.
26:6I wash my hands in innocence and go around Your altar, O LORD,
26:7To make the voice of thanksgiving heard and to recount all Your wonders.
26:8O LORD, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.
26:9Do not gather my soul with sinners, nor my life with men of blood,
26:10In whose hands are wicked schemes, and whose right hands are full of bribes.
26:11But as for me, I walk in my integrity; redeem me and favor me.
26:12My foot stands on level ground; in the assemblies I will bless the LORD.

Chapter 27

27:1BY DAVID. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
27:2When evildoers drew near against me to devour my flesh—my adversaries and my enemies—they stumbled and fell.
27:3Though an army encamps against me, my heart does not fear; though war rises against me, in this I remain confident.
27:4One thing I have asked of the LORD; this I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in His temple.
27:5For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of evil; He will conceal me in the secret place of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock.
27:6And now my head will be lifted above my enemies around me; I will sacrifice in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy. I will sing, yes, I will sing praise to the LORD.
27:7Hear, O LORD, when I call with my voice; favor me and answer me.
27:8My heart said to You, “Seek My face”; Your face, O LORD, I seek.
27:9Do not hide Your face from me; do not turn Your servant away in anger. You have been my help; do not abandon me or forsake me, O God of my salvation.
27:10Though my father and my mother forsake me, the LORD will take me in.
27:11Teach me Your way, O LORD, and lead me in a level path because of those who watch me.
27:12Do not give me over to the desire of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, breathing out violence.
27:13I would have despaired had I not believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
27:14Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; yes, wait for the LORD.

Chapter 28

28:1BY DAVID. To You, O LORD, I call; my rock, do not be deaf to me. If You remain silent toward me, I will become like those who go down to the pit.
28:2Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You, when I lift my hands toward Your holy sanctuary.
28:3Do not drag me away with the wicked and with workers of iniquity, who speak peace to their neighbors while evil is in their hearts.
28:4Give them according to their deeds and according to the evil of their actions. Give them according to the work of their hands; return their recompense upon them.
28:5Because they do not regard the works of the LORD or the work of His hands, He will tear them down and not build them up.
28:6Blessed is the LORD, for He has heard the voice of my supplications.
28:7The LORD is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusted, and I was helped. Therefore my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to Him.
28:8The LORD is their strength, and He is a stronghold of salvation for His anointed.
28:9Save Your people and bless Your inheritance; shepherd them and carry them forever.

Chapter 29

29:1A PSALM OF DAVID. Ascribe to the LORD, O sons of the mighty; ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
29:2Ascribe to the LORD the glory of His Name; bow down to the LORD in the splendor of holiness.
29:3The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders; the LORD is over many waters.
29:4The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic.
29:5The voice of the LORD breaks cedars; indeed, the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
29:6He makes them skip like a calf—Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox.
29:7The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
29:8The voice of the LORD makes the wilderness tremble; the LORD makes the wilderness of Kadesh tremble.
29:9The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare; and in His temple all say, “Glory!”
29:10The LORD sat enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits as King forever.
29:11The LORD gives strength to His people; the LORD blesses His people with peace.

Chapter 30

30:1A PSALM. A SONG AT THE DEDICATION OF THE HOUSE. BY DAVID.
30:2I exalt You, O LORD, for You have drawn me up and have not let my enemies rejoice over me.
30:3O LORD my God, I cried to You, and You healed me.
30:4O LORD, You have brought my life up from the realm of the dead; You have kept me alive from among those going down to the pit.
30:5Sing praise to the LORD, you His faithful ones, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.
30:6For His anger is but for a moment; His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may remain for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
30:7As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I will never be moved.”
30:8O LORD, by Your favor You made my mountain stand firm; You hid Your face, and I was dismayed.
30:9To You, O LORD, I called, and to the Lord I pleaded for favor:
30:10“What gain is there in my blood, in my going down to the pit? Will the dust thank You? Will it declare Your faithfulness?
30:11Hear, O LORD, and favor me; O LORD, be my helper.”
30:12You have turned my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
30:13So that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

Chapter 31

31:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID.
31:2In You, O LORD, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. In Your righteousness deliver me.
31:3Incline Your ear to me; deliver me quickly. Be for me a strong rock, a fortified refuge to save me.
31:4For You are my rock and my fortress; for Your Name’s sake lead me and guide me.
31:5Bring me out of the net they have hidden for me, for You are my stronghold.
31:6Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD, God of truth.
31:7I hate those who regard worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD.
31:8I will rejoice and be glad in Your steadfast love, for You have seen my affliction; You have known the distress of my soul.
31:9You have not handed me over to the enemy; You have set my feet in a spacious place.
31:10Favor me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye wastes away with grief, my soul and my body also.
31:11For my life is spent with sorrow and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away.
31:12Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach, especially to my neighbors, and a dread to my acquaintances; those who see me outside flee from me.
31:13I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind; I am like a broken vessel.
31:14For I hear the slander of many; terror is all around. When they conspire together against me, they scheme to take my life.
31:15But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.”
31:16My times are in Your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from my pursuers.
31:17Make Your face shine upon Your servant; save me in Your steadfast love.
31:18O LORD, let me not be put to shame, for I call upon You; let the wicked be put to shame; let them be silent in the realm of the dead.
31:19Let lying lips be mute, that speak arrogantly against the righteous, with pride and contempt.
31:20How abundant is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You, and which You have done for those who take refuge in You before the sons of men!
31:21You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the schemes of men; You conceal them in a shelter from the strife of tongues.
31:22Blessed is the LORD, for He has made His steadfast love marvelous to me in a besieged city.
31:23I said in my alarm, “I am cut off from before Your eyes.” Yet You heard the voice of my supplications when I cried to You.
31:24Love the LORD, all you His faithful ones. The LORD preserves the faithful, but abundantly repays the one who acts proudly.
31:25Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD.

Chapter 32

32:1AN INSTRUCTION OF DAVID. O the blessedness of him whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
32:2O the blessedness of the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
32:3When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.
32:4For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Interlude.
32:5I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Interlude.
32:6Therefore let every faithful one pray to You at a time when You may be found; surely when many waters overflow, they will not reach him.
32:7You are a hiding place for me; You keep me from distress; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Interlude.
32:8I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.
32:9Do not be like a horse or mule, without understanding, whose mouth must be restrained with bit and bridle, or it will not come near you.
32:10Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.
32:11Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous; shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

Chapter 33

33:1Sing for joy in the LORD, you righteous; praise is fitting for the upright.
33:2Give thanks to the LORD with a lyre; sing praise to Him with a ten-stringed harp.
33:3Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy.
33:4For the word of the LORD is upright, and all His work is done in faithfulness.
33:5He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.
33:6By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of His mouth.
33:7He gathers the waters of the sea like a mound; He puts the deeps in storehouses.
33:8Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
33:9For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.
33:10The LORD frustrates the counsel of nations; He thwarts the plans of the peoples.
33:11The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation.
33:12O the blessedness of the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He chose as His inheritance.
33:13The LORD looks from the heavens; He sees all the sons of men.
33:14From His dwelling place He looks upon all the inhabitants of the earth,
33:15He who forms the hearts of them all, who considers all their works.
33:16A king is not saved by a great army; a mighty man is not delivered by great strength.
33:17A horse is a false hope for salvation; it does not deliver by its great strength.
33:18Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those who fear Him, upon those who wait for His steadfast love,
33:19To deliver their lives from death and keep them alive in famine.
33:20Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.
33:21For our heart rejoices in Him, because we trust in His Holy Name.
33:22Let Your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, as we wait for You.

Chapter 34

34:1BY DAVID, WHEN HE CHANGED HIS BEHAVIOR BEFORE ABIMELECH, WHO DROVE HIM AWAY, AND HE DEPARTED.
34:2I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will continually be in my mouth.
34:3My soul boasts in the LORD; the humble will hear and rejoice.
34:4Magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His Name together.
34:5I sought the LORD, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
34:6They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces will not be ashamed.
34:7This poor man cried, and the LORD heard and saved him from all his distresses.
34:8The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them.
34:9Taste and see that the LORD is good; O the blessedness of the man who takes refuge in Him.
34:10Fear the LORD, you His holy ones, for those who fear Him have no lack.
34:11Young lions may lack and hunger, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
34:12Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
34:13Who is the man who desires life, who loves many days, that he may see good?
34:14Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
34:15Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
34:16The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry.
34:17The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.
34:18The righteous cry, and the LORD hears and delivers them from all their distresses.
34:19The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and He saves those crushed in spirit.
34:20Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.
34:21He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
34:22Evil will put the wicked to death, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
34:23The LORD redeems the lives of His servants, and none who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

Chapter 35

35:1BY DAVID. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.
35:2Take hold of shield and large shield, and rise up to help me.
35:3Draw the spear and close the way against my pursuers. Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.”
35:4Let those who seek my life be put to shame and dishonor; let those who devise evil against me be turned back and humiliated.
35:5Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away.
35:6Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
35:7For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life.
35:8Let destruction come upon him unaware; let the net he hid catch him; let him fall into it—to destruction.
35:9Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD; it will exult in His salvation.
35:10All my bones will say, “O LORD, who is like You, delivering the poor from one stronger than himself, and the poor and needy from his plunderer?”
35:11Violent witnesses rise up; they question me about things I do not know.
35:12They repay me evil for good, leaving my soul bereft.
35:13But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting, and my prayer returned to my bosom.
35:14I walked about as though grieving for a friend or a brother; I bowed down in mourning as one mourning for his mother.
35:15But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered together; attackers gathered against me, whom I did not know. They tore at me and did not cease.
35:16Like godless mockers at a feast, they gnashed their teeth against me.
35:17Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from young lions.
35:18I will give thanks to You in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty people.
35:19Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me; let not those who hate me without cause wink the eye.
35:20For they do not speak peace, but against the quiet ones of the land they devise deceitful words.
35:21They open their mouths wide against me; they say, “Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it!”
35:22You have seen it, O LORD; do not be silent. O Lord, do not be far from me.
35:23Awake and rise for my judgment, my God and my Lord, for my cause.
35:24Judge me according to Your righteousness, O LORD my God, and let them not rejoice over me.
35:25Let them not say in their heart, “Aha, our desire!” Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up.”
35:26Let those who rejoice at my harm be put to shame and humiliated together; let those who magnify themselves against me be clothed with shame and dishonor.
35:27Let those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and rejoice; let them continually say, “The LORD is magnified, who delights in the well-being of His servant.”
35:28Then my tongue will declare Your righteousness and Your praise all day long.

Chapter 36

36:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. BY A SERVANT OF THE LORD, BY DAVID.
36:2An oracle of transgression concerning the wicked is within my heart: “There is no fear of God before his eyes.
36:3For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful.
36:4The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; he has ceased to act wisely and do good.
36:5He devises iniquity upon his bed; he sets himself on a way that is not good; he does not reject evil.”
36:6O LORD, Your steadfast love reaches to the heavens; Your faithfulness to the clouds.
36:7Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; Your judgments are a great deep. You save man and beast, O LORD.
36:8How precious is Your steadfast love, O God! The sons of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
36:9They feast on the abundance of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your delights.
36:10For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.
36:11Continue Your steadfast love to those who know You, and Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
36:12Let not the foot of pride come against me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
36:13There the workers of iniquity have fallen; they are thrust down and cannot rise.

Chapter 37

37:1BY DAVID. Do not fret because of evildoers; do not envy those who do iniquity,
37:2For they will quickly wither like grass and fade like green herb.
37:3Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and feed on faithfulness.
37:4Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.
37:5Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will act.
37:6He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your justice as the noonday.
37:7Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; do not fret over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out wicked schemes.
37:8Cease from anger and forsake wrath; do not fret—it only leads to evil.
37:9For evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD will possess the land.
37:10Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there.
37:11But the humble will possess the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.
37:12The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him.
37:13The Lord laughs at him, for He sees that his day is coming.
37:14The wicked have drawn the sword and bent their bow, to bring down the poor and needy, to slaughter those whose way is upright.
37:15Their sword will enter their own heart, and their bows will be broken.
37:16Better is the little of the righteous than the abundance of many wicked.
37:17For the arms of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD sustains the righteous.
37:18The LORD knows the days of the blameless, and their inheritance will be forever.
37:19They will not be ashamed in a time of evil, and in days of famine they will have plenty.
37:20But the wicked will perish, and the enemies of the LORD will vanish like the glory of the pastures; like smoke they will vanish.
37:21The wicked borrows and does not repay, but the righteous is gracious and gives.
37:22For those blessed by Him will possess the land, but those cursed by Him will be cut off.
37:23The steps of a man are established by the LORD, and He delights in his way.
37:24Though he falls, he will not be cast down, for the LORD sustains his hand.
37:25I have been young, and now I am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his offspring begging for bread.
37:26All day long he is gracious and lends, and his offspring becomes a blessing.
37:27Turn away from evil and do good, and dwell forever.
37:28For the LORD loves justice and does not forsake His faithful ones; they are preserved forever, but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off.
37:29The righteous will possess the land and dwell upon it forever.
37:30The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.
37:31The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.
37:32The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death.
37:33The LORD will not leave him in his hand or condemn him when he is brought to judgment.
37:34Wait for the LORD and keep His way, and He will exalt you to possess the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
37:35I have seen a ruthless wicked man spreading himself like a luxuriant native tree.
37:36Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more; I sought him, but he could not be found.
37:37Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for a future awaits the man of peace.
37:38But transgressors will be destroyed together; the future of the wicked will be cut off.
37:39The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD, their stronghold in a time of distress.
37:40The LORD helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in Him.

Chapter 38

38:1A PSALM OF DAVID. FOR REMEMBRANCE.
38:2O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, nor discipline me in Your fury.
38:3For Your arrows have sunk into me, and Your hand has come down upon me.
38:4There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.
38:5For my iniquities have risen over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.
38:6My wounds stink and fester because of my folly.
38:7I am bent and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all day long.
38:8For my loins are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.
38:9I am feeble and severely crushed; I groan from the anguish of my heart.
38:10Lord, all my desire is before You, and my sighing is not hidden from You.
38:11My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also is gone from me.
38:12My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my affliction, and my neighbors stand far away.
38:13Those who seek my life set snares, and those who seek my harm speak of ruin and plot deceit all day long.
38:14But I, like a deaf man, do not hear; I am like a mute man who does not open his mouth.
38:15Indeed, I am like a man who does not hear and in whose mouth is no answer.
38:16For I wait for You, O LORD; You will answer, O Lord my God.
38:17For I said, “Let them not rejoice over me; when my foot slips, they magnify themselves against me.”
38:18For I am ready to fall, and my pain is continually before me.
38:19For I declare my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.
38:20But my enemies are vigorous and strong, and those who hate me without cause have multiplied.
38:21Those who repay evil for good accuse me because I pursue good.
38:22Do not forsake me, O LORD; my God, do not be far from me.
38:23Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation.

Chapter 39

39:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. FOR JEDUTHUN. A PSALM OF DAVID.
39:2I said, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle while the wicked is before me.”
39:3I was mute and silent; I kept silent even from good, and my pain grew worse.
39:4My heart grew hot within me; as I meditated, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:
39:5“Make me know, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days—what it is; let me know how fleeting I am.
39:6Behold, You have made my days mere handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before You; surely every man, though standing firm, is altogether vanity. Interlude.
39:7Surely man walks about as a shadow; surely they make an uproar for nothing. He heaps up riches and does not know who will gather them.
39:8And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
39:9Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of a fool.
39:10I am mute; I do not open my mouth, because You have done it.
39:11Remove Your stroke from me; I am consumed by the blow of Your hand.
39:12With rebukes for iniquity You discipline a man; like a moth You consume what is precious to him. Surely every man is vanity. Interlude.
39:13Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; do not be silent at my tears, for I am a sojourner with You, a temporary resident like all my fathers.
39:14Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may smile again before I depart and am no more.

Chapter 40

40:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID.
40:2I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry.
40:3He brought me up from a pit of destruction, from miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock and established my steps.
40:4He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and trust in the LORD.
40:5O the blessedness of the man who has made the LORD his trust and has not turned to the proud or to those who turn aside to falsehood.
40:6Many are the wonders You have done, O LORD my God, and Your thoughts toward us; none can compare with You. I would declare and speak of them, but they are more than can be numbered.
40:7Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired, but a body You have prepared for me; burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.
40:8Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me.
40:9I delight to do Your will, my God, and Your law is within my heart.”
40:10I have proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; behold, I do not restrain my lips, O LORD, as You know.
40:11I have not concealed Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation. I have not hidden Your steadfast love and Your truth from the great congregation.
40:12You, O LORD, do not withhold Your compassion from me; let Your steadfast love and Your truth continually preserve me.
40:13For evils without number surround me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.
40:14Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me.
40:15Let those who seek my life to destroy it be put to shame and humiliated together; let those who desire my harm be turned back and dishonored.
40:16Let those who say to me, “Aha, aha,” be appalled because of their shame.
40:17Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; let those who love Your salvation continually say, “The LORD is magnified.”
40:18But I am poor and needy; the Lord thinks of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.

Chapter 41

41:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID.
41:2O the blessedness of him who considers the poor; in a day of evil the LORD will deliver him.
41:3The LORD will preserve him and keep him alive; he will be blessed in the land, and You will not give him over to the desire of his enemies.
41:4The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed; You will restore him from his bed of illness.
41:5I said, “O LORD, favor me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.”
41:6My enemies speak evil of me: “When will he die and his name perish?”
41:7If one comes to see me, he speaks falsely; his heart gathers evil to itself; when he goes outside, he tells it.
41:8All who hate me whisper together against me; they devise evil against me:
41:9“A thing of destruction is poured out on him; now that he lies down, he will not rise again.”
41:10Even my close friend, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.
41:11But You, O LORD, favor me and raise me up, that I may repay them.
41:12By this I know that You delight in me: my enemy does not triumph over me.
41:13As for me, You uphold me in my integrity and set me in Your presence forever.
41:14Blessed is the LORD, the God of Israel, from age to age. So be it and so be it.

Chapter 42

42:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. AN INSTRUCTION OF THE SONS OF KORAH.
42:2As a deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God.
42:3My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God?
42:4My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
42:5These things I remember as I pour out my soul within me: how I passed along with the throng and led them in procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.
42:6Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why are you troubled within me? Wait for God, for I shall yet praise Him for the salvation of His countenance, O my God.
42:7My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember You from the land of Jordan and the Hermons, from Mount Mizar.
42:8Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; all Your breakers and Your billows have passed over me.
42:9By day the LORD commands His steadfast love, and by night His song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.
42:10I say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of an enemy?”
42:11As with a crushing blow to my bones, my adversaries reproach me, while they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
42:12Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why are you troubled within me? Wait for God, for I shall yet praise Him, the salvation of my countenance and my God.

Chapter 43

43:1Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against a faithless nation; deliver me from a deceitful and unjust man.
43:2For You are the God of my strength. Why have You cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of an enemy?
43:3Send forth Your light and Your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling places.
43:4Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my exceeding joy; and I will praise You with the lyre, O God, my God.
43:5Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why are you troubled within me? Wait for God, for I shall yet praise Him, the salvation of my countenance and my God.

Chapter 44

44:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. AN INSTRUCTION OF THE SONS OF KORAH.
44:2O God, we have heard with our ears; our fathers have recounted to us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
44:3With Your own hand You dispossessed nations, but them You planted; You afflicted peoples, but You spread our fathers abroad.
44:4For they did not possess the land by their sword, nor did their arm save them, but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your countenance, because You favored them.
44:5You are my King, O God; command deliverance for Jacob.
44:6By You we push back our adversaries; by Your Name we tread down those who rise against us.
44:7For I do not trust in my bow, nor can my sword save me.
44:8But You have saved us from our adversaries, and You have put to shame those who hate us.
44:9In God we have boasted all day long, and we give thanks to Your Name forever. Interlude.
44:10Yet You have cast us off and put us to shame, and You do not go forth with our armies.
44:11You make us turn back from the adversary, and those who hate us plunder for themselves.
44:12You give us up like sheep for food, and You have scattered us among the nations.
44:13You sell Your people for next to nothing and gain nothing by their price.
44:14You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those around us.
44:15You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
44:16All day long my dishonor is before me, and the shame of my face has covered me,
44:17Because of the voice of the reproacher and reviler, because of the enemy and the avenger.
44:18All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten You, nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant.
44:19Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps turned aside from Your way.
44:20Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals and covered us with deep darkness.
44:21If we had forgotten the Name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
44:22Would God not search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.
44:23Yet for Your sake we are slain all day long; we are regarded as sheep for slaughter.
44:24Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise; do not cast us off forever.
44:25Why do You hide Your face? Why do You forget our affliction and oppression?
44:26For our soul has bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the earth.
44:27Arise as our help, and ransom us for Your steadfast love’s sake.

Chapter 45

45:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. SET TO “LILIES.” AN INSTRUCTION OF THE SONS OF KORAH. A LOVE SONG.
45:2My heart overflows with a good word; I recite my composition concerning the King; my tongue is the pen of a skillful scribe.
45:3You are fairer than the sons of men; grace is poured upon Your lips; therefore God has blessed You forever.
45:4Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One, in Your splendor and Your majesty.
45:5In Your majesty ride forth victoriously for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; let Your right hand teach You awesome deeds.
45:6Your arrows are sharp; peoples fall under You; they pierce the hearts of the King’s enemies.
45:7Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
45:8You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions.
45:9All Your garments are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from ivory palaces stringed instruments make You glad.
45:10Daughters of kings are among Your honored women; the queen stands at Your right hand in gold of Ophir.
45:11Hear, O daughter, and consider; incline your ear, and forget your people and your father’s house.
45:12Then the King will desire your beauty. Because He is your Lord, bow down to Him.
45:13The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift; the rich among the people will seek your favor.
45:14The king’s daughter is all glorious within; her clothing is woven with gold.
45:15In embroidered garments she is brought to the King; the virgins, her companions who follow her, are brought to You.
45:16They are brought with joy and gladness; they enter the palace of the King.
45:17In place of Your fathers will be Your sons; You will appoint them as princes in all the earth.
45:18I will cause Your Name to be remembered in every generation; therefore peoples will praise You forever and ever.

Chapter 46

46:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. BY THE SONS OF KORAH. IN THE MAIDEN REGISTER. A SONG.
46:2God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in distress.
46:3Therefore we will not fear though the earth changes and the mountains slip into the heart of the seas,
46:4Though their waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at their swelling. Interlude.
46:5There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling place of the Most High.
46:6God is in her midst; she will not be moved. God will help her at the break of dawn.
46:7Nations rage; kingdoms totter. He gives forth His voice; the earth melts.
46:8The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Interlude.
46:9Come, behold the works of the LORD, who has made desolations in the earth,
46:10Who causes wars to cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire.
46:11Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.
46:12The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Interlude.

Chapter 47

47:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH.
47:2Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a voice of joy.
47:3For the LORD Most High is awesome, a great King over all the earth.
47:4He subdues peoples under us and nations under our feet.
47:5He chooses our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob whom He loves. Interlude.
47:6God has ascended with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a horn.
47:7Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.
47:8For God is King of all the earth; sing praises with understanding.
47:9God reigns over the nations; God sits upon His holy throne.
47:10The princes of the peoples have gathered as the people of the God of Abraham; for the shields of the earth belong to God. He is greatly exalted.

Chapter 48

48:1A SONG. A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH.
48:2Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, His holy hill.
48:3Beautiful in elevation, the joy of all the earth, is Mount Zion on the heights of the north, the city of the great King.
48:4God is known in her citadels as a stronghold.
48:5For behold, the kings assembled; they advanced together.
48:6They saw and were astonished; they were alarmed and fled away.
48:7Trembling seized them there, anguish as of a woman in labor.
48:8With an east wind You shatter the ships of Tarshish.
48:9As we have heard, so we have seen in the city of the LORD of Hosts, in the city of our God. God will establish her forever. Interlude.
48:10We have pondered Your steadfast love, O God, within Your temple.
48:11As is Your Name, O God, so is Your praise to the ends of the earth; Your right hand is filled with righteousness.
48:12Let Mount Zion rejoice; let the daughters of Judah be glad because of Your judgments.
48:13Walk around Zion and encircle her; count her towers.
48:14Mark well her ramparts; pass through her citadels, that you may recount it to a later generation,
48:15For this God is our God forever and ever; He will guide us even to death.

Chapter 49

49:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH.
49:2Hear this, all you peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
49:3Both low and high, rich and poor together.
49:4My mouth will speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart will be understanding.
49:5I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will open my riddle upon the harp.
49:6Why should I fear in days of evil, when the iniquity of those who deceive me surrounds me?
49:7They trust in their wealth and boast in the abundance of their riches.
49:8Surely no man can redeem his brother or give to God a ransom for him,
49:9For the redemption of his life is costly and must cease forever,
49:10That he should live on forever and not see the pit.
49:11For he sees that wise men die; the fool and the brutish perish together and leave their wealth to others.
49:12Their inward thought is that their houses will last forever, their dwelling places from generation to generation; they name lands after themselves.
49:13But man in honor does not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.
49:14This way of theirs is folly, yet those who come after them approve their sayings. Interlude.
49:15Like sheep they are appointed for the realm of the dead; death will shepherd them, and the upright will rule over them in the morning. The realm of the dead will consume their form, far from their lofty dwelling.
49:16But God will ransom my life from the power of the realm of the dead, for He will take me. Interlude.
49:17Do not fear when a man becomes rich, when the glory of his house increases,
49:18For when he dies he will take nothing; his glory will not descend after him.
49:19Though while he lives he blesses himself—and men praise you when you do well for yourself—
49:20He will go to the generation of his fathers; they will never see the light.
49:21Man in honor, yet without understanding, is like the beasts that perish.

Chapter 50

50:1A PSALM OF ASAPH. The Mighty One, God, the LORD, has spoken and summoned the earth from the rising of the sun to its going down.
50:2From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God has shone forth.
50:3Our God comes and will not be silent; fire devours before Him, and a tempest rages around Him.
50:4He summons the heavens above and the earth, that He may judge His people:
50:5“Gather My faithful ones to Me, those who made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.”
50:6And the heavens declare His righteousness, for God Himself is Judge. Interlude.
50:7“Hear, O My people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
50:8I do not reprove you for your sacrifices; your burnt offerings are continually before Me.
50:9I will not take a bull from your house or male goats from your folds.
50:10For every beast of the forest is Mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
50:11I know every bird of the mountains, and the wild creatures of the field are with Me.
50:12If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are Mine.
50:13Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of male goats?
50:14Offer thanksgiving to God, and fulfill your vows to the Most High.
50:15Call upon Me in the day of distress; I will deliver you, and you will honor Me.”
50:16But to the wicked God says, “What right have you to recount My statutes or take My covenant upon your lips?
50:17For you hate discipline and cast My words behind you.
50:18When you see a thief, you consent with him, and your portion is with adulterers.
50:19You send forth your mouth in evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
50:20You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your mother’s son.
50:21These things you have done, and I kept silent; you thought that I was altogether like you. But I will reprove you and set these things in order before your eyes.
50:22Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart and there be none to deliver.
50:23He who offers praise honors Me; and to him who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God.”

Chapter 51

51:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID,
51:2WHEN NATHAN THE PROPHET CAME TO HIM, AFTER HE HAD GONE IN TO BATHSHEBA.
51:3Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgressions.
51:4Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
51:5For I know my transgressions, and my sin is continually before me.
51:6Against You, You only, have I sinned and done evil in Your sight, so that You are righteous when You speak and pure when You judge.
51:7Behold, in iniquity I was brought forth, and in sin my mother conceived me.
51:8Behold, You desire truth in the inward being, and in the hidden part You make me know wisdom.
51:9Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
51:10Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.
51:11Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
51:12Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
51:13Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
51:14Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
51:15Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will return to You.
51:16Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will sing aloud of Your righteousness.
51:17O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.
51:18For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; You take no pleasure in burnt offering.
51:19The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and crushed heart, O God, You will not despise.
51:20Do good to Zion in Your good pleasure; build the walls of Jerusalem.
51:21Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, in burnt offering and whole burnt offering; then bulls will be offered on Your altar.

Chapter 52

52:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. AN INSTRUCTION OF DAVID,
52:2WHEN DOEG THE EDOMITE CAME AND TOLD SAUL, “DAVID HAS COME TO THE HOUSE OF AHIMELECH.”
52:3Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all day long.
52:4Your tongue devises destruction, like a sharpened razor, O worker of deceit.
52:5You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking righteousness. Interlude.
52:6You love every devouring word, O deceitful tongue.
52:7But God will break you down forever; He will seize you and tear you from your tent, and uproot you from the land of the living. Interlude.
52:8The righteous will see and fear, and they will laugh at him:
52:9“Behold the man who did not make God his stronghold, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and took refuge in his destruction.”
52:10But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever.
52:11I will give thanks to You forever, because You have done it; and I will wait for Your Name, for it is good before Your faithful ones.

Chapter 53

53:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. SET TO “A DISEASE.” AN INSTRUCTION OF DAVID.
53:2The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt and have committed abominable iniquity; there is none who does good.
53:3God has looked from the heavens upon the sons of men, to see if there is a wise one, seeking God.
53:4They have all turned back; together they have become corrupt. There is none who does good, not even one.
53:5Have all workers of wickedness not known? Those consuming my people have eaten food; they have not called upon God.
53:6There they were in great fear, where there was no fear; for God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against you. You have put them to shame, for God has rejected them.
53:7Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion! When God restores the fortunes of His people, Jacob rejoices; Israel is glad.

Chapter 54

54:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. WITH STRINGED INSTRUMENTS. AN INSTRUCTION OF DAVID,
54:2WHEN THE ZIPHITES CAME AND SAID TO SAUL, “IS DAVID NOT HIDING AMONG US?”
54:3O God, save me by Your Name, and vindicate me by Your might.
54:4O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth.
54:5For strangers have risen against me, and violent men seek my life; they have not set God before them. Interlude.
54:6Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is among those who uphold my life.
54:7He will return the evil to my enemies; cut them off in Your truth.
54:8With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to You; I will give thanks to Your Name, O LORD, for it is good.
54:9For He has delivered me from every distress, and my eye has looked in triumph upon my enemies.

Chapter 55

55:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. WITH STRINGED INSTRUMENTS. AN INSTRUCTION OF DAVID.
55:2Give ear to my prayer, O God, and do not hide from my supplication.
55:3Attend to me and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and moan,
55:4Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked; for they bring trouble upon me, and in anger they persecute me.
55:5My heart writhes within me, and terrors of death have fallen upon me.
55:6Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me.
55:7And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.
55:8Behold, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness. Interlude.
55:9I would hasten to my place of refuge from the rushing wind and the storm.”
55:10Confound them, O Lord; divide their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
55:11Day and night they go around her upon her walls; iniquity and trouble are in her midst.
55:12Destruction is in her midst; oppression and deceit do not depart from her streets.
55:13For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, or I could bear it; nor is it one who hates me who exalts himself against me, or I could hide from him.
55:14But it is you, a man my equal, my companion and my familiar friend.
55:15Together we enjoyed sweet counsel; we walked in company in the house of God.
55:16Let death seize them; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for wickedness is in their dwelling and among them.
55:17As for me, I will call upon God, and the LORD will save me.
55:18Evening and morning and noon I will complain and moan, and He will hear my voice.
55:19He has ransomed my life in peace from the battle against me, for many were against me.
55:20God will hear and afflict them—He who sits enthroned from of old. Interlude. Because they do not change and do not fear God.
55:21He has stretched out his hands against those at peace with him; he has profaned his covenant.
55:22His speech is smoother than butter, but war is in his heart; his words are softer than oil, yet they are drawn swords.
55:23Cast your burden upon the LORD, and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
55:24But You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction. Men of blood and deceit will not live out half their days; but I will trust in You.

Chapter 56

57:3I call to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me.
57:4He sends from heaven and saves me; He puts to shame the one who pants after me. Interlude. God sends forth His steadfast love and His faithfulness.
57:5My soul is among lions; I lie down among those who breathe fire—the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and whose tongue is a sharp sword.

58:5Their venom is like the venom of a serpent, like a deaf cobra that stops its ear,
58:6That does not hear the voice of charmers, or of a skillful enchanter.
58:7O God, break their teeth in their mouths; tear out the fangs of young lions, O LORD.
58:8Let them vanish like water that runs away; when he draws his bow, let his arrows be as though cut off.
58:9Like a snail that melts away as it goes, like a woman’s stillborn child, let them not see the sun.

60:3O God, You have rejected us; You have broken us; You have been angry. Restore us.
60:4You have made the land tremble; You have torn it open. Heal its fractures, for it totters.
60:5You have shown Your people hardship; You have made us drink wine that causes staggering.
60:6You have given a banner to those who fear You, to be displayed because of truth. Interlude.
60:7That Your beloved ones may be delivered, save with Your right hand and answer us.

60:11Who brings me to the fortified city? Who leads me to Edom?

60:13Give us help against the foe, for human deliverance is vain.
60:14With God we do valiantly, and He Himself treads down our adversaries.

Chapter 61

61:2Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer.
61:3From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
61:4For You have been my refuge, a strong tower before the enemy.
61:5Let me dwell in Your tent forever; let me take refuge under the shelter of Your wings. Interlude.
61:6For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the inheritance of those who fear Your Name.
61:7Add days to the king’s days; may his years be as generation upon generation.

62:5They only consult to thrust him down from his high place; they delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but inwardly they curse. Interlude.
62:6For God alone, wait in silence, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him.
62:7He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken.
62:8On God rest my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, my refuge, is in God.

Chapter 63

63:2O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You. My soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and weary land without water.
63:3Thus I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your strength and Your glory.

64:2Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
64:3Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers, from the tumult of workers of iniquity,
64:4Who sharpen their tongue like a sword and aim their arrow—a bitter word—
64:5To shoot the blameless man from hiding. Suddenly they shoot him, and do not fear.
64:6They hold fast to an evil purpose; they speak of hiding snares. They say, “Who sees them?”
64:7They search out injustices, saying, “We have completed a careful search.” Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep.
64:8But God shoots them with an arrow; suddenly they are wounded.
64:9They are made to stumble; their own tongue is against them. All who see them shake their heads.

65:2Praise awaits You, O God, in Zion; to You the vow is paid.
65:3O Hearer of prayer, to You all flesh comes.
65:4Iniquities prevail against me; as for our transgressions, You atone for them.
65:5Blessed is the one You choose and bring near, that he may dwell in Your courts. We are satisfied with the goodness of Your house, the holiness of Your temple.
65:6With awesome deeds in righteousness You answer us, O God of our salvation, the confidence of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest sea.
65:7You establish mountains by Your power, girded with might.
65:8You still the roar of seas, the roar of their waves, and the tumult of the peoples.

66:2Sing praise to the glory of His Name; make His praise glorious.
66:3Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! Because of the greatness of Your strength, Your enemies feign obedience to You.

68:16A mountain of God is the mountain of Bashan; a many-peaked mountain is the mountain of Bashan.
68:17Why do you look with envy, O many-peaked mountains, at the mountain God has desired for His dwelling? The LORD will dwell there forever.
68:18The chariots of God are twice ten thousand, thousands upon thousands; the Lord is among them, as at Sinai, in the sanctuary.
68:19You ascended on high; You led captivity captive; You received gifts from men, even from the rebellious, that the LORD God might dwell there.
68:20Blessed is the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation. Interlude.
68:21Our God is a God of saving acts; to the LORD, the Lord, belong escapes from death.
68:22Surely God crushes the head of His enemies, the hairy crown of one who walks on in his guilt.

69:2Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.
69:3I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood sweeps over me.
69:4I am weary from crying; my throat is parched; my eyes fail while I wait for my God.
69:5Those who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head; those who would destroy me—my enemies who falsely accuse me—are mighty. What I did not steal, I must restore.
69:6O God, You know my folly, and my guilt is not hidden from You.
69:7Let not those who wait for You be put to shame through me, O Lord, the LORD of Hosts; let not those who seek You be dishonored through me, O God of Israel.
69:8For Your sake I have borne reproach; shame has covered my face.
69:9I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to the sons of my mother.
69:10For zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen upon me.
69:11When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became a reproach to me.

69:15Deliver me from the mire, and do not let me sink; let me be delivered from those who hate me and from the deep waters.
69:16Do not let the floodwaters sweep over me, nor let the deep swallow me up, nor let the pit close its mouth over me.
69:17Answer me, O LORD, for Your steadfast love is good; according to the abundance of Your mercies, turn to me.
69:18Do not hide Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress; hurry and answer me.

70:2O God, make haste to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me.
70:3Let those who seek my life be put to shame and humiliated; let those who desire my harm be turned back and dishonored.
70:4Let those who say, “Aha, aha,” turn back because of their shame.
70:5Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; let those who love Your salvation continually say, “God is magnified.”
70:6But I am poor and needy; O God, make haste to me. You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay.

Chapter 71

71:1In You, O LORD, I have sought refuge; do not let me be put to shame forever.
71:2In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline Your ear to me and save me.
71:3Be to me a rock of habitation to which I may continually come; You have commanded that I be saved, for You are my rock and my fortress.
71:4O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and violent man.
71:5For You are my hope, O Lord, the LORD, my trust from my youth.
71:6Upon You I have leaned from the womb; You brought me forth from my mother’s womb. My praise is continually for You.
71:7I have become a wonder to many, but You are my strong refuge.
71:8My mouth is filled with Your praise, with Your splendor all day long.
71:9Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails.

72:1BY SOLOMON. O God, give Your judgments to the King, and Your righteousness to the King’s Son.
72:2May He judge Your people with righteousness, and Your afflicted with justice.
72:3May the mountains bear peace to the people, and the hills through righteousness.
72:4May He judge the afflicted of the people, save the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor.
72:5May they fear You as long as the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.
72:6May He descend like rain upon mown grass, like showers watering the earth.
72:7In His days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound until the moon is no more.
72:8May He rule from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.
72:9May desert dwellers bow before Him, and His enemies lick the dust.
72:10May the kings of Tarshish and the coastlands render tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts.
72:11May all kings bow down before Him; may all nations serve Him.
72:12For He delivers the needy who cries out, and the afflicted who has no helper.
72:13He has pity on the poor and needy, and saves the lives of the needy.
72:14He redeems their lives from oppression and violence, and their blood is precious in His sight.
72:15May He live, and may the gold of Sheba be given to Him; may prayer be made for Him continually, and may He be blessed all day long.
72:16May there be an abundance of grain in the land, even on the tops of the mountains; may its fruit wave like Lebanon, and may those of the city flourish like the grass of the earth.
72:17May His Name endure forever; may His Name flourish as long as the sun. May all nations bless themselves in Him and call Him blessed.
72:18Blessed is the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does wonders.
72:19Blessed be His glorious Name forever, and may the whole earth be filled with His glory. So be it and so be it.
72:20The prayers of David son of Jesse are ended.

Chapter 73

73:1A PSALM OF ASAPH. Surely God is good to Israel, to those pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled,
73:2My steps had nearly slipped, for I was envious of the boastful,
73:3When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no pains at their death,
73:4And their bodies are sound.
73:5They are not in the trouble of mortals, nor are they plagued like other men.
73:6Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them like a garment.
73:7Their eyes bulge from fatness; the desires of their hearts overflow.
73:8They mock and speak wickedly; from on high they speak of oppression.
73:9They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth.
73:10Therefore His people return here, and abundant waters are drained by them.
73:11And they say, “How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?”
73:12Behold, these are the wicked—always at ease, they increase in wealth.
73:13Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and washed my hands in innocence.
73:14For I have been plagued all day long, and my correction comes every morning.
73:15Had I said, “I will speak thus,” behold, I would have betrayed the generation of Your sons.
73:16When I tried to understand this, it was wearisome in my sight,
73:17Until I entered the sanctuaries of God; then I discerned their end.
73:18Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to ruin.
73:19How they become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed by terrors.
73:20Like a dream when one awakens, O Lord, when You awake, You despise their image.
73:21When my heart was embittered and I was pierced in my inmost being,
73:22I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast before You.
73:23Yet I am continually with You; You hold my right hand.
73:24You guide me with Your counsel, and afterward You will receive me into glory.
73:25Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You I desire nothing on earth.
73:26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever.
73:27For behold, those who are far from You perish; You cut off everyone who goes whoring from You.
73:28But as for me, the nearness of God is good; I have made the Lord, the LORD, my refuge, that I may recount all Your works.

Chapter 74

74:1AN INSTRUCTION OF ASAPH. Why, O God, have You cast us off forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the flock of Your pasture?
74:2Remember Your congregation, which You purchased of old, the tribe of Your inheritance, which You redeemed; this Mount Zion, where You dwelt.
74:3Lift up Your steps toward the perpetual ruins—all the evil the enemy has done in the sanctuary.
74:4Your adversaries have roared within Your meeting place; they have set up their standards as signs.
74:5They were like men wielding axes in a thicket of trees.
74:6And now they smash all its carved work with axe and hatchet.
74:7They set Your sanctuary on fire; they profaned the Dwelling Place of Your Name, razing it to the ground.
74:8They said in their hearts, “Let us subdue them altogether”; they burned every meeting place of God in the land.
74:9We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and none among us knows how long.
74:10How long, O God, will the adversary reproach? Will the enemy despise Your Name forever?
74:11Why do You hold back Your hand, Your right hand? Draw it out from Your bosom and consume them.
74:12Yet God is my King from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
74:13You divided the sea by Your strength; You shattered the heads of sea dragons in the waters.
74:14You crushed the heads of the sea serpent; You gave him as food to the people of the wilderness.
74:15You split open spring and stream; You dried up ever-flowing rivers.
74:16The day is Yours, and the night is Yours; You established the moon and the sun.
74:17You set all the boundaries of the earth; You formed summer and winter.
74:18Remember this: the enemy reproaches the LORD, and a foolish people despise Your Name.
74:19Do not give the life of Your turtledove to the wild beast; do not forget the life of Your afflicted ones forever.
74:20Look to the covenant, for the dark places of the earth are full of habitations of violence.
74:21Do not let the oppressed turn back ashamed; let the poor and needy praise Your Name.
74:22Arise, O God, plead Your cause; remember how the fool reproaches You all day long.
74:23Do not forget the voice of Your adversaries; the roar of those who rise against You ascends continually.

Chapter 75

75:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. SET TO “DO NOT DESTROY.” A PSALM OF ASAPH. A SONG.
75:2We give thanks to You, O God; we give thanks, for Your Name is near; they recount Your wonders.
75:3“When I choose the appointed time, I will judge uprightly.
75:4The earth and all its inhabitants melt; I have set its pillars firm. Interlude.
75:5I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn.
75:6Do not lift up your horn on high or speak with a stiff neck.’”
75:7For exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the wilderness.
75:8But God is Judge: He brings one down and lifts another up.
75:9For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, and the wine foams, fully mixed; He pours from it. Surely all the wicked of the earth drain and drink its dregs.
75:10But I will declare it forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.
75:11I will cut off all the horns of the wicked; the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.

Chapter 76

76:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. WITH STRINGED INSTRUMENTS. A PSALM OF ASAPH. A SONG.
76:2God is known in Judah; His Name is great in Israel.
76:3His shelter is in Salem, and His dwelling in Zion.
76:4There He shattered the flaming arrows of the bow, the shield, the sword, and the battle. Interlude.
76:5You are radiant, more majestic than the mountains of prey.
76:6The stouthearted were plundered; they sank into their sleep, and none of the mighty men could lift a hand.
76:7At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both chariot and horse fell into deep sleep.
76:8You—You are to be feared; who can stand before You when once You are angry?
76:9From heaven You caused judgment to be heard; the earth feared and was still,
76:10When God arose to judgment, to save all the humble of the earth. Interlude.
76:11Surely the wrath of man will praise You; with the remnant of wrath You will gird Yourself.
76:12Make vows to the LORD your God and fulfill them; let all who are around Him bring gifts to the One to be feared.
76:13He cuts off the spirit of princes; He is to be feared by the kings of the earth.

Chapter 77

77:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. FOR JEDUTHUN. A PSALM OF ASAPH.
77:2I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and He gives ear to me.
77:3In the day of my distress I sought the Lord; my hand was stretched out by night without ceasing; my soul refused to be comforted.
77:4I remember God and groan; I meditate, and my spirit grows faint. Interlude.
77:5You hold my eyelids open; I am troubled and cannot speak.
77:6I consider the days of old, the years long past.
77:7I remember my song in the night; I meditate in my heart, and my spirit searches:
77:8Will the Lord cast off forever? Will He never again show favor?
77:9Has His steadfast love ceased forever? Has His promise failed for all generations?
77:10Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His compassion? Interlude.
77:11Then I said, “This is my grief: the right hand of the Most High has changed.”
77:12I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember Your wonders of old.
77:13I will meditate on all Your work and muse on Your deeds.
77:14Your way, O God, is holy; what god is great like God?
77:15You are the God who works wonders; You have made Your strength known among the peoples.
77:16With Your arm You redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Interlude.
77:17The waters saw You, O God; the waters saw You and writhed; the great depths also trembled.
77:18The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; Your arrows flashed to and fro.
77:19The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind; lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook.
77:20Your way was through the sea, Your paths through many waters, yet Your footprints were not known.
77:21You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Chapter 78

78:1AN INSTRUCTION OF ASAPH. Give ear, O my people, to my law; incline your ears to the sayings of my mouth.
78:2I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter riddles from of old,
78:3Things we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
78:4We will not hide them from their children, but recount to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, His strength, and the wonders He has done.
78:5He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to make known to their children,
78:6So that the generation to come might know them—the children yet to be born—and that they might arise and tell them to their children,
78:7That they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments;
78:8And not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
78:9The sons of Ephraim, armed with the bow, turned back in the day of battle.
78:10They did not keep the covenant of God and refused to walk in His law;
78:11They forgot His deeds and the wonders He had shown them.
78:12He did wonders before their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
78:13He split the sea and caused them to pass through; He made the waters stand like a heap.
78:14He led them with a cloud by day, and all night with a light of fire.
78:15He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink as from the great deep.
78:16He brought streams out of the rock and made waters flow down like rivers.
78:17Yet they continued to sin against Him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
78:18They tested God in their heart by asking food for their craving.
78:19They spoke against God, saying, “Can God set a table in the wilderness?
78:20Behold, He struck the rock, so that waters gushed out and streams overflowed. Can He also give bread? Can He provide meat for His people?”
78:21Therefore the LORD heard and was furious; fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also rose against Israel,
78:22Because they did not believe in God or trust in His salvation.
78:23Yet He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven.
78:24He rained down manna for them to eat and gave them the grain of heaven.
78:25Man ate the bread of the mighty; He sent them food in abundance.
78:26He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens and by His strength drove the south wind;
78:27He rained meat upon them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the seas.
78:28He made them fall in the midst of His camp, around His dwellings.
78:29They ate and were fully satisfied, and He brought them what they craved.
78:30They had not turned from their craving; their food was still in their mouths,
78:31When the anger of God rose against them and slew the strongest among them, bringing down the young men of Israel.
78:32In spite of all this they sinned still and did not believe in His wonders.
78:33So He ended their days in futility and their years in terror.
78:34When He slew them, they sought Him; they returned and earnestly sought God.
78:35They remembered that God was their rock, and God Most High their Redeemer.
78:36But they flattered Him with their mouth and lied to Him with their tongue;
78:37Their heart was not steadfast toward Him, nor were they faithful to His covenant.
78:38Yet He, being compassionate, pardoned iniquity and did not destroy; many times He turned His anger away and did not stir up all His wrath.
78:39He remembered that they were flesh, a wind that passes and does not return.
78:40How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert!
78:41Again and again they tested God and pained the Holy One of Israel.
78:42They did not remember His hand, the day He redeemed them from the adversary,
78:43When He set His signs in Egypt and His wonders in the field of Zoan.
78:44He turned their rivers to blood, and their streams, so they could not drink.
78:45He sent swarms among them, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.
78:46He gave their crops to the devouring locust and their labor to the locust.
78:47He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost;
78:48He gave their cattle over to hail and their livestock to lightning bolts.
78:49He sent upon them the fury of His anger—wrath, indignation, and distress—a band of destroying angels.
78:50He made a path for His anger; He did not spare their life from death but gave their life over to the plague.
78:51He struck every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.
78:52Then He led His people out like sheep and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.
78:53He led them in safety, so they did not fear; but the sea covered their enemies.
78:54He brought them to the border of His sanctuary, to this mountain that His right hand acquired.
78:55He drove out nations before them, allotted them an inheritance by the measuring line, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
78:56Yet they tested and rebelled against God Most High and did not keep His testimonies.
78:57They turned back and acted treacherously like their fathers; they turned aside like a deceitful bow.
78:58They provoked Him to anger with their high places and moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.
78:59God heard and was furious, and He utterly rejected Israel.
78:60He forsook the Dwelling Place at Shiloh, the tent He had set among men.
78:61He gave His strength into captivity, and His glory into the hand of the adversary.
78:62He gave His people over to the sword and was furious with His inheritance.
78:63Fire consumed His young men, and His virgins were not celebrated in marriage.
78:64His priests fell by the sword, and their widows did not weep.
78:65Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a mighty man shouting because of wine.
78:66He struck His adversaries backward and put them to everlasting reproach.
78:67He rejected the tent of Joseph and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
78:68He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which He loved.
78:69He built His sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which He founded forever.
78:70He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds.
78:71He brought him from following nursing ewes, to shepherd Jacob His people and Israel His inheritance.
78:72He shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart and guided them with the skillfulness of his hands.

Chapter 79

79:1A PSALM OF ASAPH. O God, nations have entered Your inheritance; they have defiled Your holy temple; they have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.
79:2They have given the dead bodies of Your servants as food to the birds of the heavens, the flesh of Your faithful ones to the wild beasts of the earth.
79:3They have shed their blood like water around Jerusalem, and there is none to bury them.
79:4We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.
79:5Until when, O LORD? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire?
79:6Pour out Your fury upon the nations that do not know You, and upon kingdoms that do not call upon Your Name.
79:7For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his dwelling place.
79:8Do not remember against us the iniquities of our forefathers; let Your mercies quickly meet us, for we have been brought very low.
79:9Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your Name; deliver us, and cover over our sins, for Your Name’s sake.
79:10Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let the vengeance for the shed blood of Your servants be known among the nations before our eyes.
79:11Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You; according to the greatness of Your arm, preserve those doomed to die.
79:12Return sevenfold into the bosom of our neighbors the reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.
79:13And we, Your people and the flock of Your pasture, will give thanks to You forever; from generation to generation we will recount Your praise.

Chapter 80

80:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. SET TO “LILIES OF TESTIMONY.” A PSALM OF ASAPH.
80:2Shepherd of Israel, give ear, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who sit enthroned above the winged guardians, shine forth.
80:3Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up Your might, and come to save us.
80:4Restore us, O God; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved.
80:5O LORD, God of Hosts, how long will You be angry with the prayer of Your people?
80:6You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in full measure.
80:7You make us an object of contention to our neighbors, and our enemies mock us among themselves.
80:8O God of Hosts, restore us; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved.
80:9You brought a vine out of Egypt; You drove out nations and planted it.
80:10You cleared the ground before it; it took deep root and filled the land.
80:11The mountains were covered by its shade, and the cedars of God by its boughs.
80:12It sent out its branches to the sea, and its shoots to the Euphrates.
80:13Why have You broken down its walls, so that all who pass by the way pluck its fruit?
80:14The boar from the forest ravages it, and the wild beasts of the field feed upon it.
80:15O God of Hosts, return, we implore You; look down from the heavens, and see; attend to this vine,
80:16the stock that Your right hand planted, and the son You made strong for Yourself.
80:17It is burned with fire and cut down; at the rebuke of Your face they perish.
80:18Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand, upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself.
80:19Then we will not turn back from You; revive us, and we will call upon Your Name.
80:20O LORD, God of Hosts, restore us; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved.

Chapter 81

81:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. ON THE GITTITE INSTRUMENT. BY ASAPH.
81:2Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob.
81:3Raise a song and sound the tambourine, the sweet lyre with the harp.
81:4Blow the ram’s horn at the new moon, at the full moon, on the day of our feast,
81:5For it is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
81:6He established it as a testimony in Joseph when He went out against the land of Egypt. I heard a language I did not know:
81:7“I removed his shoulder from the burden; his hands were freed from the basket.
81:8In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you from the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Interlude.
81:9Hear, O My people, and I will warn you; O Israel, if only you would listen to Me!
81:10There shall be no foreign god among you, and you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
81:11I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
81:12But My people did not listen to My voice, and Israel would not submit to Me.
81:13So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their heart, to walk in their own counsels.
81:14If only My people would listen to Me, if Israel would walk in My ways!
81:15I would quickly subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their adversaries.
81:16Those who hate the LORD would feign obedience to Him, and their time would endure forever.
81:17I would feed you with the finest wheat, and satisfy you with honey from the rock.”

Chapter 82

82:1A PSALM OF ASAPH. God stands in the assembly of God; He judges among the gods.
82:2How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Interlude.
82:3Vindicate the weak and the fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and the poor.
82:4Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
82:5They do not know, nor do they understand; they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
82:6I have said, “You are gods, and sons of the Most High—all of you;
82:7Nevertheless, like men you shall die, and like one of the princes you shall fall.”
82:8Rise, O God, judge the earth; for You shall inherit all the nations.

Chapter 83

83:1A SONG. A PSALM OF ASAPH.
83:2O God, do not remain silent; do not be still, and do not be quiet, O God.
83:3For behold, Your enemies make an uproar, and those who hate You have raised their heads.
83:4They devise crafty counsel against Your people, and conspire against Your hidden ones.
83:5They have said, “Come, let us cut them off from being a nation, so that the name of Israel is remembered no more.”
83:6For they have conspired together with one mind; they make a covenant against You:
83:7The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites,
83:8Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre.
83:9Assyria also has joined them; they have become an arm to the sons of Lot. Interlude.
83:10Do to them as You did to Midian, as to Sisera and Jabin at the Brook of Kishon,
83:11who perished at Endor and became dung for the ground.
83:12Make their nobles like Oreb and like Zeeb, and all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
83:13who said, “Let us possess for ourselves the pastures of God.”
83:14O my God, make them like whirling dust, like stubble before the wind.
83:15As fire burns a forest, and as flame sets the mountains ablaze,
83:16so pursue them with Your whirlwind, and terrify them with Your storm.
83:17Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek Your Name, O LORD.
83:18Let them be ashamed and terrified forever; let them be humiliated and perish.
83:19Let them know that You alone, whose Name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth.

Chapter 84

84:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. ON THE GITTITE INSTRUMENT. A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH.
84:2How lovely are Your dwelling places, O LORD of Hosts!
84:3My soul longs, indeed, it faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out to the living God.
84:4Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young—at Your altars, O LORD of Hosts, my King and my God.
84:5Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; they still praise You. Interlude.
84:6Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, in whose heart are the highways.
84:7Passing through the Valley of Weeping, they make it a spring; the early rain also covers it with pools.
84:8They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion.
84:9O LORD, God of Hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob. Interlude.
84:10Behold our shield, O God, and look upon the face of Your Anointed One.
84:11For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather stand at the threshold in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
84:12For the LORD God is a sun and a shield; the LORD gives grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk in integrity.
84:13O LORD of Hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in You!

Chapter 85

85:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH.
85:2You have shown favor to Your land, O LORD; You have restored the fortunes of Jacob.
85:3You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people; You have covered all their sin. Interlude.
85:4You have withdrawn all Your wrath; You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger.
85:5Restore us, O God of our salvation, and put away Your indignation toward us.
85:6Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger from generation to generation?
85:7Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?
85:8Show us, O LORD, Your steadfast love, and give to us Your salvation.
85:9I will hear what God, the LORD, will speak; for He speaks peace to His people and to His faithful ones, but let them not return to folly.
85:10Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land.
85:11Steadfast love and faithfulness have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed.
85:12Faithfulness springs up from the earth, and righteousness looks down from the heavens.
85:13The LORD also gives what is good, and our land yields its increase.
85:14Righteousness goes before Him and prepares the way for His steps.

Chapter 86

86:1A PRAYER OF DAVID. Incline Your ear, O LORD; answer me, for I am poor and needy.
86:2Guard my life, for I am faithful; save Your servant who trusts in You—You are my God.
86:3Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I call to You all the day.
86:4Make glad the soul of Your servant, for to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
86:5For You, Lord, are good and forgiving, and abundant in steadfast love to all who call upon You.
86:6Hear, O LORD, my prayer, and attend to the voice of my pleas for mercy.
86:7In the day of my distress I call upon You, for You answer me.
86:8There is none like You among the gods, O Lord, and there are no works like Yours.
86:9All nations that You have made shall come and bow down before You, O Lord, and glorify Your Name.
86:10For You are great and do wonders; You alone are God.
86:11Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth. Unite my heart to fear Your Name.
86:12I give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your Name forever.
86:13For Your steadfast love is great toward me, and You have delivered my life from the depths of the realm of the dead.
86:14O God, the arrogant have risen against me, and a company of ruthless men seek my life; they have not set You before them.
86:15But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in steadfast love and faithfulness.
86:16Turn to me and be gracious to me; give Your strength to Your servant, and save the son of Your maidservant.
86:17Show me a sign of Your goodness, that those who hate me may see and be ashamed; for You, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Chapter 87

87:1A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH. A SONG. His foundation is on the holy mountains.
87:2The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
87:3Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. Interlude.
87:4I will mention Egypt and Babylon among those who know Me; behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush: “This one was born there.”
87:5And of Zion it shall be said, “This one and that one were born in her”; and the Most High Himself shall establish her.
87:6The LORD records, when He registers the peoples, “This one was born there.” Interlude.
87:7Singers and dancers alike say, “All my springs are in you.”

Chapter 88

88:1A SONG. A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH. TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. SET TO “SICKNESS OF AFFLICTION.” AN INSTRUCTION OF HEMAN THE EZRAHITE.
88:2O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out by day; by night I am before You.
88:3Let my prayer come before You; incline Your ear to my cry.
88:4For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to the realm of the dead.
88:5I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I have become like a man without strength,
88:6abandoned among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, and who are cut off from Your hand.
88:7You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest places, in the depths.
88:8Your wrath lies heavily upon me, and You have afflicted me with all Your breakers. Interlude.

Chapter 89

89:1AN INSTRUCTION OF ETHAN THE EZRAHITE.
89:2I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD forever; from generation to generation I will make Your faithfulness known with my mouth.
89:3For I have said, “Steadfast love is built up forever; in the heavens You establish Your faithfulness.”
89:4“I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant:
89:5Forever I will establish your seed, and build your throne from generation to generation.” Interlude.
89:6The heavens praise Your wonders, O LORD, Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.
89:7For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD?
89:8God is greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who surround Him.
89:9O LORD, God of Hosts, who is mighty like You, O LORD? Your faithfulness surrounds You.
89:10You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them.
89:11You crushed the sea monster like one slain; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.
89:12The heavens are Yours; the earth also is Yours; the world and all it contains, You founded them.
89:13The north and the south, You created them; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy in Your Name.
89:14Mighty is Your arm; strong is Your hand, exalted is Your right hand.
89:15Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before Your face.
89:16Blessed are the people who know the joyful shout; O LORD, they walk in the light of Your face.
89:17In Your Name they rejoice all the day, and by Your righteousness they are exalted.
89:18For You are the glory of their strength, and by Your favor our horn is exalted.
89:19For our shield belongs to the LORD, and our king to the Holy One of Israel.
89:20Then You spoke in a vision to Your faithful one and said, “I have placed help upon a mighty one; I have exalted one chosen from the people.
89:21I have found David My servant; with My holy oil I have anointed him.
89:22My hand shall remain with him; My arm also shall strengthen him.
89:23No enemy shall outwit him, and no son of wickedness shall afflict him.
89:24I will crush his adversaries before him, and strike those who hate him.
89:25My faithfulness and My steadfast love shall be with him, and in My Name his horn shall be exalted.
89:26I will set his hand upon the sea, and his right hand upon the rivers.
89:27He shall call to Me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.’
89:28I also will make him My firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
89:29Forever I will keep My steadfast love for him, and My covenant shall be confirmed to him.
89:30I will establish his seed forever, and his throne as the days of the heavens.
89:31If his sons forsake My law and do not walk in My judgments,
89:32if they profane My statutes and do not keep My commandments,
89:33then I will punish their transgression with a rod, and their iniquity with blows.
89:34But I will not remove My steadfast love from him, nor betray My faithfulness.
89:35I will not profane My covenant, nor alter what has gone forth from My lips.
89:36Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David.
89:37His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before Me.
89:38It shall be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.” Interlude.
89:39But You have cast off and rejected; You are enraged with Your Anointed One.
89:40You have renounced the covenant of Your servant; You have profaned his crown in the dust.
89:41You have broken down all his walls; You have made his strongholds a ruin.
89:42All who pass by the way plunder him; he has become a reproach to his neighbors.
89:43You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have caused all his enemies to rejoice.
89:44You have also turned back the edge of his sword, and have not upheld him in battle.
89:45You have put an end to his splendor, and cast his throne to the ground.

89:47How long, O LORD, will You hide Yourself? Will Your wrath burn like fire forever?
89:48Remember how fleeting my life is. For what futility You created all the sons of men!
89:49Who is the man who lives and does not see death, who delivers his life from the power of the realm of the dead? Interlude.
89:50Where are Your former acts of steadfast love, O Lord, which You swore to David in Your faithfulness?
89:51Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants, how I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples,
89:52with which Your enemies have reproached, O LORD, with which they have reproached the footsteps of Your Anointed One.
89:53Blessed is the LORD forever. So be it and so be it.

Chapter 90

90:1A PRAYER OF MOSES, THE MAN OF GOD. Lord, You have been our dwelling place through all generations.
90:2Before the mountains were born, before You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
90:3You turn mortal man back to dust, and say, “Return, sons of man.”
90:4For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it has passed, and like a watch in the night.
90:5You sweep them away; they are like sleep. In the morning they are like grass that springs anew.
90:6In the morning it flourishes and springs anew; in the evening it is cut down and withers.
90:7For we are consumed by Your anger, and terrified by Your wrath.
90:8You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your face.
90:9For all our days pass away under Your wrath; we finish our years like a sigh.
90:10The days of our years are seventy years, or by strength eighty; yet their best is toil and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.
90:11Who knows the power of Your anger? Your wrath is according to the fear due You.
90:12Teach us rightly to number our days, that we may bring a heart of wisdom.
90:13Return, O LORD—how long? Have compassion on Your servants.
90:14Satisfy us in the morning with Your steadfast love, that we may sing for joy and rejoice all our days.
90:15Make us rejoice according to the days You afflicted us, the years in which we saw evil.
90:16Let Your work appear to Your servants, and Your majesty to their children.
90:17Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.

Chapter 91

91:1He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High abides in the shadow of the Almighty.
91:2I say of the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
91:3For He delivers you from the snare of the fowler, from the deadly pestilence.
91:4He covers you with His pinions, and under His wings you take refuge; His faithfulness is a large shield and a defense.
91:5You shall not fear the terror by night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
91:6Nor the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor the destruction that devastates at noon.
91:7A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.
91:8You shall only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.
91:9Because you have made the LORD—my refuge—the Most High your dwelling place,
91:10No evil shall befall you, and no plague shall come near your tent.
91:11For He commands His angels concerning you, to keep you in all your ways.
91:12On their hands they bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
91:13You tread upon the lion and the cobra; you trample the young lion and the serpent.
91:14“Because he has clung to Me, I deliver him; I set him on high, because he has known My Name.
91:15He calls upon Me, and I answer him; I am with him in distress; I deliver him and honor him.
91:16I satisfy him with length of days, and show him My salvation.”

Chapter 92

92:1A PSALM. A SONG FOR THE SABBATH DAY.
92:2It is good to give thanks to the LORD, and to sing praises to Your Name, O Most High,
92:3To declare Your steadfast love in the morning, and Your faithfulness by night,
92:4On a ten-stringed harp, with meditative music on the lyre.
92:5For You have made me glad, O LORD, by Your work; I sing for joy at the works of Your hands.
92:6How great are Your works, O LORD; Your thoughts are very deep.
92:7A senseless man does not know, and a fool does not understand this:
92:8Though the wicked spring up like grass, and all workers of iniquity flourish, it is only that they may be destroyed forever.
92:9But You are on high forever, O LORD.
92:10For behold, Your enemies, O LORD; behold, Your enemies perish; all workers of iniquity are scattered.
92:11But You exalt my horn like that of a wild ox; I am anointed with fresh oil.
92:12My eye has looked upon those who lie in wait for me; my ears hear of the evildoers who rise against me.
92:13The righteous flourishes like a palm tree; he grows like a cedar in Lebanon.
92:14Those planted in the house of the LORD flourish in the courts of our God.
92:15They still bear fruit in old age; they are full of sap and green,
92:16To declare that the LORD is upright—my Rock, and there is no injustice in Him.

Chapter 93

93:1The LORD reigns; He is clothed with majesty. The LORD is clothed, girded with strength. Indeed, the world is firmly established; it shall not be moved.
93:2Your throne is established from ancient days; You are from everlasting.
93:3The floods have lifted up, O LORD; the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their pounding waves.
93:4Above the roar of many waters, above the mighty breakers of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty.
93:5Your testimonies are very sure; holiness befits Your house, O LORD, for length of days.

Chapter 94

94:1O LORD, God of vengeance, God of vengeance, shine forth.
94:2Rise up, Judge of the earth; repay the proud what they deserve.
94:3How long shall the wicked, O LORD—how long shall the wicked exult?
94:4They pour forth arrogant words; all workers of iniquity boast.
94:5They crush Your people, O LORD, and afflict Your inheritance.
94:6They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless.
94:7And they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.”
94:8Understand, you senseless among the people; you fools, when will you become wise?
94:9He who planted the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see?
94:10He who disciplines nations, does He not rebuke—He who teaches man knowledge?
94:11The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are a breath.
94:12Blessed is the man whom You discipline, O LORD, and teach from Your law,
94:13To give him rest from days of evil, until a pit is dug for the wicked.
94:14For the LORD does not reject His people, nor forsake His inheritance.
94:15For judgment returns to righteousness, and all the upright in heart follow it.
94:16Who rises up for me against evildoers? Who stands for me against workers of iniquity?
94:17Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul would soon have dwelt in silence.
94:18When I said, “My foot is slipping,” Your steadfast love, O LORD, supported me.
94:19When anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comforts delight my soul.
94:20Can a throne of destruction be allied with You—one that frames injustice by statute?
94:21They band together against the life of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood.
94:22But the LORD is my stronghold, and my God is the rock of my refuge.
94:23He brings their iniquity back upon them, and destroys them by their own evil; the LORD our God destroys them.

Chapter 95

95:1Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout to the Rock of our salvation.
95:2Let us come before His face with thanksgiving; let us shout to Him with psalms.
95:3For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
95:4In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the peaks of the mountains are His.
95:5The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land.
95:6Come, let us bow down and bend low; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
95:7For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the flock of His hand. Today, if you hear His voice,
95:8Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the wilderness,
95:9Where your fathers tested Me; they tried Me, though they had seen My work.
95:10For forty years I loathed that generation, and said, “They are a people who err in their heart, and they have not known My ways.”
95:11Therefore I swore in My anger, “They shall not enter My rest.”

Chapter 96

96:1Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.
96:2Sing to the LORD, bless His Name; proclaim His salvation from day to day.
96:3Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all the peoples.
96:4For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.
96:5For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.
96:6Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.
96:7Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples; ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
96:8Ascribe to the LORD the glory of His Name; bring an offering and come into His courts.
96:9Bow yourselves to the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth.
96:10Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns; indeed, the world is firmly established; it shall not be moved. He judges the peoples with equity.”
96:11Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and all that fills it.
96:12Let the field exult, and everything in it; then all the trees of the forest shall sing for joy
96:13Before the LORD, for He comes; for He comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in His faithfulness.

Chapter 97

97:1The LORD reigns; let the earth be glad; let the many coastlands rejoice.
97:2Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
97:3Fire goes before Him and burns up His adversaries all around.
97:4His lightnings illumine the world; the earth sees and trembles.
97:5The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth.
97:6The heavens declare His righteousness, and all the peoples see His glory.
97:7All who serve a carved image are put to shame, those who boast in idols; bow yourselves to Him, all you gods.
97:8Zion hears and rejoices, and the daughters of Judah are glad because of Your judgments, O LORD.
97:9For You, O LORD, are Most High over all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods.
97:10You who love the LORD, hate evil! He guards the lives of His faithful ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
97:11Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.
97:12Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.

Chapter 98

98:1A PSALM. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders; His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for Him.
98:2The LORD has made His salvation known; in the sight of the nations He has revealed His righteousness.
98:3He has remembered His steadfast love and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
98:4Shout to the LORD, all the earth; break forth and sing for joy and sing praise.
98:5Sing praise to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody,
98:6With trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn; shout before the King, the LORD.
98:7Let the sea roar, and all that fills it, the world and those who dwell in it.
98:8Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together
98:9Before the LORD, for He comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

Chapter 99

99:1The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble. He sits enthroned above the winged guardians; let the earth quake.
99:2The LORD is great in Zion, and He is exalted above all the peoples.
99:3Let them praise Your great and fearsome Name—He is holy.
99:4The King is strong and loves justice. You have established equity; You have done justice and righteousness in Jacob.
99:5Exalt the LORD our God, and bow yourselves at His footstool—He is holy.
99:6Moses and Aaron were among His priests, and Samuel among those who called upon His Name. They called to the LORD, and He answered them.
99:7He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud; they kept His testimonies and the statute He gave them.
99:8O LORD our God, You answered them; You were a forgiving God to them, yet an avenger of their deeds.
99:9Exalt the LORD our God, and bow yourselves at His holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy.

Chapter 100

100:1A PSALM OF THANKSGIVING. Shout to the LORD, all the earth.
100:2Serve the LORD with joy; come before Him with singing.
100:3Know that the LORD is God. He made us, and we are His—His people and the flock of His pasture.
100:4Enter His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with praise; give thanks to Him; bless His Name.
100:5For the LORD is good; His steadfast love is everlasting, and His faithfulness from generation to generation.

Chapter 101

101:1A PSALM OF DAVID. I sing of steadfast love and justice; to You, O LORD, I sing praise.
101:2I will act wisely in a blameless way. When will You come to me? I will walk in the integrity of my heart within my house.
101:3I will set no worthless thing before my eyes. I hate the work of those who turn aside; it shall not cling to me.
101:4A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will know no evil.
101:5Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will cut off; the one with haughty eyes and a proud heart, him I will not endure.
101:6My eyes are upon the faithful ones of the land, that they may dwell with me; whoever walks in a blameless way, he shall serve me.
101:7He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house; he who speaks lies shall not stand before my eyes.
101:8Morning by morning I will cut off all the wicked of the land, to cut off from the city of the LORD all workers of iniquity.

Chapter 102

102:1A PRAYER OF THE AFFLICTED WHEN HE IS FAINT, AND POURS OUT HIS COMPLAINT BEFORE THE LORD.
102:2O LORD, hear my prayer; let my cry come to You.
102:3Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress; incline Your ear to me. In the day I call, answer me quickly.
102:4For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones burn like a firebrand.
102:5My heart is struck and withered like grass, for I forget to eat my bread.
102:6Because of the sound of my groaning, my bones cling to my flesh.
102:7I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I have become like an owl among ruins.
102:8I lie awake, and am like a solitary bird on a roof.
102:9All day my enemies reproach me; those who rage against me use my name as a curse.
102:10For I eat ashes like bread, and mingle my drink with tears,
102:11Because of Your indignation and wrath; for You have lifted me up and cast me down.
102:12My days are like a lengthening shadow, and I wither like grass.
102:13But You, O LORD, remain forever, and Your remembrance from generation to generation.
102:14You arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to favor her; the appointed time has come.
102:15For Your servants delight in her stones, and show favor to her dust.
102:16The nations shall fear the Name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth Your glory.
102:17For the LORD rebuilds Zion; He appears in His glory.
102:18He turns toward the prayer of the destitute, and does not despise their prayer.
102:19This shall be written for a later generation, that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD.
102:20For He looks down from His holy height; from the heavens the LORD looks upon the earth,
102:21To hear the groaning of the prisoner, to release those appointed to death,
102:22That they may declare the Name of the LORD in Zion, and His praise in Jerusalem,
102:23When the peoples and kingdoms gather together to serve the LORD.
102:24He weakened my strength along the way; He shortened my days.
102:25I said, “My God, do not take me away in the midst of my days; Your years endure through all generations.
102:26Long ago You founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.
102:27They perish, but You remain; they all wear out like a garment. You change them like clothing, and they pass away.
102:28But You are the same, and Your years have no end.
102:29The children of Your servants shall dwell, and their offspring shall be established before You.”

Chapter 103

103:1BY DAVID. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His Holy Name.
103:2Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget all His benefits,
103:3Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases,
103:4Who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with steadfast love and compassion,
103:5Who satisfies your desire with good, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.
103:6The LORD works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.
103:7He made His ways known to Moses, His deeds to the sons of Israel.
103:8The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in steadfast love.
103:9He does not contend forever, nor keep His anger forever.
103:10He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us according to our iniquities.
103:11For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so mighty is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him.
103:12As far as east is from west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
103:13As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
103:14For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.
103:15As for mortal man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field.
103:16For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.
103:17But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children,
103:18To those who keep His covenant, and remember His precepts to do them.
103:19The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all.
103:20Bless the LORD, you His angels, mighty in strength, who do His word, obeying the voice of His word.
103:21Bless the LORD, all you His hosts, His ministers who do His will.
103:22Bless the LORD, all His works, in every place of His dominion. Bless the LORD, O my soul.

Chapter 104

104:1Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
104:2You wrap Yourself in light as with a garment, and stretch out the heavens like a curtain,
104:3You lay the beams of Your upper chambers in the waters, make the clouds Your chariot, and walk upon the wings of the wind,
104:4You make the winds Your messengers, and flaming fire Your ministers.
104:5You founded the earth upon its bases; it shall not be moved forever and ever.
104:6You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains.
104:7At Your rebuke they fled; at the sound of Your thunder they hurried away.
104:8They went up over the mountains; they went down through the valleys, to the place You established for them.
104:9You set a boundary they shall not cross; they shall not return to cover the earth.
104:10He sends springs into the valleys; they flow between the mountains.
104:11They give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst.
104:12Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; among the branches they give forth their song.
104:13He waters the mountains from His upper chambers; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of Your works.
104:14He causes grass to grow for livestock, and plants for the service of man, to bring forth food from the earth,
104:15And wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains the heart of man.
104:16The trees of the LORD are satisfied, the cedars of Lebanon that He planted,
104:17Where the birds make their nests; as for the stork, the fir trees are her home.
104:18The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the hyraxes.
104:19He made the moon for appointed times; the sun knows its setting.
104:20You bring darkness, and it is night, when every beast of the forest prowls.
104:21The young lions roar for prey, and seek their food from God.
104:22The sun rises; they gather and lie down in their dens.
104:23Man goes forth to his work and to his labor until evening.
104:24How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom You made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures.
104:25There is the sea, great and wide, where moving things without number are found, living creatures both small and great.
104:26There the ships go, and the sea serpent, which You formed to play in it.
104:27They all look to You, to give them their food in its season.
104:28You give to them, and they gather; You open Your hand, and they are satisfied with good.
104:29You hide Your face, and they are dismayed; You take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.
104:30You send forth Your Spirit, and they are created; and You renew the face of the ground.
104:31May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in His works,
104:32He who looks upon the earth, and it trembles; He touches the mountains, and they smoke.
104:33I will sing to the LORD throughout my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
104:34May my meditation be pleasing to Him; I rejoice in the LORD.
104:35Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 105

105:1Give thanks to the LORD; call upon His Name; make known His deeds among the peoples.
105:2Sing to Him; sing praises to Him; tell of all His wonders.
105:3Glory in His Holy Name; let the heart of those who seek the LORD rejoice.
105:4Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His face continually.
105:5Remember the wonders He has done, His signs, and the judgments of His mouth,
105:6O offspring of Abraham His servant, O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones.
105:7He is the LORD our God; His judgments are throughout all the earth.
105:8He remembers His covenant forever, the word He commanded for a thousand generations,
105:9The covenant He made with Abraham, and His oath to Isaac.
105:10He confirmed it to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
105:11Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan, the portion of your inheritance,”
105:12When they were few in number, very few, and sojourners in it.
105:13They wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people.
105:14He allowed no one to oppress them; He rebuked kings for their sake:
105:15“Do not touch My anointed ones, and do no harm to My prophets.”
105:16He called for a famine upon the land; He broke every staff of bread.
105:17He sent a man before them; Joseph was sold as a slave.
105:18They afflicted his feet with fetters; his neck was put in iron,
105:19Until the time his word came to pass; the word of the LORD tested him.
105:20The king sent and released him; the ruler of peoples set him free.
105:21He made him lord of his house, and ruler over all his possessions,
105:22To bind his princes at his will, and to teach his elders wisdom.
105:23Then Israel came into Egypt, and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
105:24He made His people very fruitful, and made them mightier than their adversaries.
105:25He turned their heart to hate His people, to deal craftily with His servants.
105:26He sent Moses His servant, and Aaron, whom He had chosen.
105:27They performed His signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.
105:28He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they did not rebel against His words.
105:29He turned their waters to blood, and caused their fish to die.
105:30Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings.
105:31He spoke, and swarms came, and gnats throughout all their territory.
105:32He gave them hail for rain, and flaming fire in their land.
105:33He struck their vines and their fig trees, and shattered the trees of their territory.
105:34He spoke, and locusts came, and young locusts without number.
105:35They ate all the vegetation in their land, and ate the fruit of their ground.
105:36He struck every firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their vigor.
105:37He brought them out with silver and gold, and there was none among His tribes who stumbled.
105:38Egypt rejoiced at their departure, for dread of them had fallen upon it.
105:39He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night.
105:40They asked, and He brought quail, and satisfied them with bread from the heavens.
105:41He opened the rock, and waters flowed; they ran through dry places like a river.
105:42For He remembered His holy word to Abraham His servant.
105:43He brought forth His people with joy, His chosen ones with a joyful shout.
105:44He gave them the lands of nations, and they possessed the labor of peoples,
105:45That they might keep His statutes and observe His laws. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 106

106:1Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love is everlasting.
106:2Who can declare the mighty acts of the LORD, or proclaim all His praise?
106:3Blessed are those who keep justice, who practice righteousness at all times.
106:4Remember me, O LORD, when You show favor to Your people; visit me with Your salvation,
106:5That I may see the good of Your chosen ones, rejoice in the joy of Your nation, and glory with Your inheritance.
106:6We have sinned with our fathers; we have done perversely; we have acted wickedly.
106:7Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; they did not remember the abundance of Your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Sea of Reeds.
106:8Yet He saved them for His Name’s sake, to make His might known.
106:9He rebuked the Sea of Reeds, and it dried up; He led them through the depths as through a wilderness.
106:10He saved them from the hand of him who hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
106:11The waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left.
106:12Then they believed His words; they sang His praise.
106:13They soon forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel.
106:14They craved intensely in the wilderness, and tested God in the desert.
106:15He gave them their request, but sent wasting into their soul.
106:16They envied Moses in the camp, and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD.
106:17The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.
106:18Fire burned among their company; a flame consumed the wicked.
106:19They made a calf in Horeb, and bowed themselves to a cast-metal image.
106:20They exchanged their glory for the form of an ox that eats grass.
106:21They forgot God their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt,
106:22Wonders in the land of Ham, and fearful things at the Sea of Reeds.
106:23Therefore He said He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen one stood in the breach before Him, to turn back His wrath from destroying them.
106:24They despised the desirable land; they did not believe His word.
106:25They murmured in their tents; they did not listen to the voice of the LORD.
106:26Then He raised His hand against them, to make them fall in the wilderness,
106:27To make their offspring fall among the nations, and to scatter them throughout the lands.
106:28They joined themselves to Baal-Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead.
106:29They provoked Him to anger by their deeds, and a plague broke out among them.
106:30Then Phinehas stood and executed judgment, and the plague was restrained.
106:31It was reckoned to him as righteousness, from generation to generation forever.
106:32They angered Him at the waters of Meribah, and it went badly for Moses because of them,
106:33For they embittered his spirit, and he spoke rashly with his lips.
106:34They did not destroy the peoples, as the LORD had commanded them,
106:35But mingled among the nations, and learned their works.
106:36They served their idols, and they became a snare to them.
106:37They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.
106:38They shed innocent blood—the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with blood.
106:39They were defiled by their deeds, and played the prostitute by their acts.
106:40Then the anger of the LORD burned against His people, and He abhorred His inheritance.
106:41He gave them into the hand of nations, and those who hated them ruled over them.
106:42Their enemies oppressed them, and they were subdued under their hand.
106:43Many times He delivered them, but they rebelled in their purpose, and sank low in their iniquity.
106:44Yet He looked upon their distress when He heard their cry.
106:45He remembered His covenant for their sake, and relented according to the abundance of His steadfast love.
106:46He caused them to be shown compassion by all who held them captive.
106:47Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to Your Holy Name and glory in Your praise.
106:48Blessed is the LORD, God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. And let all the people say, “So be it.” Praise the Lord.

Chapter 107

107:1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love is everlasting.
107:2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He redeemed from the hand of the adversary,
107:3And gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and from the sea.
107:4They wandered in a wilderness, on a desert way; they found no city in which to dwell.
107:5Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.
107:6Then they cried to the LORD in their distress, and He delivered them from their troubles.
107:7He led them by a straight way, to go to a city in which to dwell.
107:8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love, and for His wonders to the sons of men.
107:9For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with good.
107:10Those who sat in darkness and death-shade, prisoners in affliction and iron,
107:11Because they rebelled against the words of God, and despised the counsel of the Most High.
107:12He humbled their heart with labor; they stumbled, and there was none to help.
107:13Then they cried to the LORD in their distress, and He saved them from their troubles.
107:14He brought them out of darkness and death-shade, and broke their bonds apart.
107:15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love, and for His wonders to the sons of men.
107:16For He shattered doors of bronze, and cut through bars of iron.
107:17Fools were afflicted because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities.
107:18Their soul abhorred all food, and they drew near to the gates of death.
107:19Then they cried to the LORD in their distress, and He saved them from their troubles.
107:20He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their pits.
107:21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love, and for His wonders to the sons of men,
107:22And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and recount His works with joyful singing.
107:23Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters,
107:24They see the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.
107:25For He spoke and raised a stormy wind, which lifted up its waves.
107:26They rose to the heavens; they went down to the depths; their soul melted in trouble.
107:27They reeled and staggered like a drunkard, and all their wisdom was swallowed up.
107:28Then they cried to the LORD in their distress, and He brought them out of their troubles.
107:29He stilled the storm to a whisper, and its waves were hushed.
107:30Then they rejoiced because the waters were quiet, and He led them to their desired haven.
107:31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love, and for His wonders to the sons of men,
107:32And let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people, and praise Him in the council of the elders.
107:33He turns rivers into a wilderness, and springs of water into dry ground,
107:34A fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
107:35He turns a wilderness into a pool of water, and dry land into springs of water.
107:36There He causes the hungry to dwell, and they establish a city in which to dwell.
107:37They sow fields and plant vineyards, and produce a fruitful harvest.
107:38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; and He does not let their livestock diminish.
107:39Then they diminish and bow down under oppression, evil, and sorrow.
107:40He pours contempt upon nobles, and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.
107:41But He sets the needy securely on high from affliction, and makes their families like a flock.
107:42The upright see it and rejoice, and all perversity shuts its mouth.
107:43Whoever is wise, let him observe these things, and let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.

Chapter 108

108:1A SONG. A PSALM OF DAVID.
108:2My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music, even with my glory.
108:3Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.
108:4I will give thanks to You among the peoples, O LORD; I will praise You among the nations.
108:5For Your steadfast love is great above the heavens, and Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
108:6Be exalted above the heavens, O God; let Your glory be above all the earth,
108:7That Your beloved ones may be delivered; save with Your right hand and answer me.
108:8God has spoken in His holiness: “I will exult; I will divide Shechem and measure out the Valley of Succoth.
108:9Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim is the helmet of My head; Judah is My ruler’s staff.
108:10Moab is My washbasin; over Edom I cast My sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”
108:11Who brings me to the fortified city? Who leads me to Edom?
108:12Is it not You, O God, who have rejected us? Will You not go out, O God, with our armies?
108:13Give us help against the foe, for human deliverance is vain.
108:14With God we do valiantly, and He Himself treads down our adversaries.

Chapter 109

109:1TO THE CHOIR DIRECTOR. A PSALM OF DAVID. O God of my praise, do not be silent,
109:2For a wicked mouth and a deceitful mouth have opened against me; they have spoken to me with a lying tongue.
109:3They surround me with words of hatred, and fight against me without cause.
109:4In return for my love they accuse me, but I am prayer.
109:5They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
109:6Appoint a wicked man over him, and let an accuser stand at his right hand.
109:7When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, and let his prayer become sin.
109:8Let his days be few; let another take his oversight.
109:9Let his sons be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
109:10Let his sons wander continually and beg; let them seek food far from their ruins.
109:11Let a creditor seize all that he has, and let strangers plunder his labor.
109:12Let there be none to extend steadfast love to him, nor any to show favor to his fatherless children.
109:13Let his descendants be cut off; in the next generation let their name be blotted out.
109:14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and let the sin of his mother not be blotted out.
109:15Let them be continually before the LORD, that He may cut off their remembrance from the earth,
109:16Because he did not remember to show steadfast love, but pursued the poor and needy man, and the brokenhearted, to put him to death.
109:17He loved cursing, and it came upon him; he did not delight in blessing, and it was far from him.
109:18He clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, and it entered his inward parts like water, and like oil into his bones.
109:19Let it be to him as the garment with which he covers himself, and as the belt he continually binds around himself.
109:20Let this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, and of those who speak evil against my soul.
109:21But You, O Lord, the LORD, deal with me for Your Name’s sake; because Your steadfast love is good, deliver me.
109:22For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
109:23I pass away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.
109:24My knees are weak from fasting, and my body has grown lean, without fat.
109:25I have become a reproach to them; when they see me, they shake their heads.
109:26Help me, O LORD my God; save me according to Your steadfast love.
109:27Let them know that this is Your hand; You, O LORD, have done it.
109:28Let them curse, but You bless; when they rise, let them be ashamed, but let Your servant rejoice.
109:29Let my accusers be clothed with disgrace, and wrap themselves in their shame as in a robe.
109:30I will greatly give thanks to the LORD with my mouth, and praise Him in the midst of many.
109:31For He stands at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those who condemn his soul.

Chapter 110

110:1A PSALM OF DAVID. An utterance of the LORD to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
110:2The LORD extends Your mighty scepter from Zion: “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
110:3Your people offer themselves freely in the day of Your power, in holy splendor; from the womb of the dawn, the dew of Your youth is Yours.
110:4The LORD has sworn, and will not relent: “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”
110:5The Lord at Your right hand shatters kings in the day of His anger.
110:6He judges among the nations, filling them with corpses; He shatters chiefs over the broad earth.
110:7He drinks from a brook along the way; therefore He lifts up His head.

Chapter 111

111:1Praise the Lord. I give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the council of the upright and in the congregation.
111:2Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them.
111:3Splendor and majesty are His work, and His righteousness endures forever.
111:4He has made His wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate.
111:5He gives food to those who fear Him; He remembers His covenant forever.
111:6He has declared the power of His works to His people, in giving them the inheritance of nations.
111:7The works of His hands are truth and justice; all His precepts are faithful.
111:8They are established forever and ever, carried out in truth and uprightness.
111:9He sent redemption to His people; He commanded His covenant forever. Holy and fearsome is His Name.
111:10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; good understanding belongs to all who practice His precepts. His praise endures forever.

Chapter 112

112:1Praise the Lord. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in His commandments.
112:2His offspring shall be mighty in the earth; the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
112:3Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.
112:4Light rises in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
112:5Good is the man who is gracious and lends; he conducts his affairs with justice.
112:6For he shall never be moved; the righteous shall be remembered forever.
112:7He is not afraid of an evil report; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
112:8His heart is upheld; he does not fear, until he looks upon his adversaries.
112:9He has scattered abroad; he has given to the needy; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.
112:10The wicked man sees and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked perishes.

Chapter 113

113:1Praise the Lord. Praise, O servants of the LORD; praise the Name of the LORD.
113:2Blessed be the Name of the LORD, from now on and forever.
113:3From the rising of the sun to its setting, the Name of the LORD is praised.
113:4The LORD is high above all nations; His glory is above the heavens.
113:5Who is like the LORD our God, who is enthroned on high,
113:6Who stoops down to look upon the heavens and the earth?
113:7He raises the poor from the dust; He lifts the needy from the ash heap,
113:8To seat him with princes, with the princes of His people.
113:9He gives the barren woman a home, making her a joyful mother of sons. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 114

114:1When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign speech,
114:2Judah became His sanctuary, Israel His dominion.
114:3The sea saw and fled; the Jordan turned backward.
114:4The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.
114:5What ails you, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn backward?
114:6O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs?
114:7Tremble, O earth, before the Lord, before the God of Jacob,
114:8Who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.

Chapter 115

115:1Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your Name give glory, because of Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness.
115:2Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
115:3Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.
115:4Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.
115:5They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see.
115:6They have ears, but they do not hear; they have noses, but they do not smell.
115:7They have hands, but they do not feel; they have feet, but they do not walk; no sound comes from their throats.
115:8Those who make them become like them, as does everyone who trusts in them.
115:9O Israel, trust in the LORD; He is their help and their shield.
115:10O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD; He is their help and their shield.
115:11You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD; He is their help and their shield.
115:12The LORD has remembered us; He will bless us. He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron.
115:13He will bless those who fear the LORD, both small and great.
115:14May the LORD increase you, you and your sons.
115:15May you be blessed by the LORD, Maker of the heavens and the earth.
115:16The heavens—the heavens are the LORD’s, but the earth He has given to the sons of men.
115:17The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any who go down into silence.
115:18But we will bless the Lord, from now on and forever. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 116

116:1I love the LORD, because He hears my voice and my supplications.
116:2Because He has inclined His ear to me, I will call upon Him all my days.
116:3The cords of death encompassed me, and the distresses of the realm of the dead found me; I found distress and sorrow.
116:4Then I called upon the Name of the LORD: “O LORD, please deliver my life.”
116:5The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is merciful.
116:6The LORD preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me.
116:7Return, O my soul, to your rest, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.
116:8For You have delivered my life from death, my eyes from tears, my foot from stumbling.
116:9I will walk before the LORD in the lands of the living.
116:10I believed, therefore I spoke; I was greatly afflicted.
116:11I said in my alarm, “Every man is a liar.”
116:12What shall I return to the LORD for all His benefits toward me?
116:13I will lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the Name of the LORD.
116:14I will fulfill my vows to the LORD, now, before all His people.
116:15Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His faithful ones.
116:16O LORD, truly I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant. You have loosed my bonds.
116:17I will offer to You a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon the Name of the LORD.
116:18I will fulfill my vows to the LORD, now, before all His people,
116:19In the courts of the house of the LORD, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 117

117:1Praise the LORD, all you nations; praise Him, all you peoples.
117:2For His steadfast love is mighty toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 118

118:1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love is everlasting.
118:2Let Israel now say, “His steadfast love is everlasting.”
118:3Let the house of Aaron now say, “His steadfast love is everlasting.”
118:4Let those who fear the LORD now say, “His steadfast love is everlasting.”
118:5Out of the narrow place I called to the LORD; the LORD answered me in a spacious place.
118:6The LORD is for me; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
118:7The LORD is for me among my helpers, and I shall look upon those who hate me.
118:8It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.
118:9It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.
118:10All nations surrounded me; in the Name of the LORD I surely cut them off.
118:11They surrounded me; indeed, they surrounded me; in the Name of the LORD I surely cut them off.
118:12They surrounded me like bees; they were extinguished like a fire of thorns; in the Name of the LORD I surely cut them off.
118:13You pushed me hard, so that I might fall, but the LORD helped me.
118:14The LORD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.
118:15The sound of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous; the right hand of the LORD acts valiantly.
118:16The right hand of the LORD is exalted; the right hand of the LORD acts valiantly.
118:17I shall not die, but live, and recount the works of the LORD.
118:18The LORD has disciplined me severely, but He has not given me up to death.
118:19Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will enter through them and give thanks to the LORD.
118:20This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous shall enter through it.
118:21I give thanks to You, for You have answered me and have become my salvation.
118:22The stone the builders rejected has become the head of the corner.
118:23This is from the LORD; it is wonderful in our eyes.
118:24This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
118:25O LORD, please save us; O LORD, please grant us success.
118:26Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the LORD; we bless you from the house of the LORD.
118:27The LORD is God, and He has given us light; bind the festal sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.
118:28You are my God, and I give thanks to You; my God, I exalt You.
118:29Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love is everlasting.

Chapter 119

119:1ALEPH. O the blessedness of those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD.
119:2O the blessedness of those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart.
119:3Indeed, they do no injustice; they walk in His ways.
119:4You have commanded that Your precepts be kept diligently.
119:5Oh, that my ways were established to keep Your statutes.
119:6Then I shall not be ashamed when I look upon all Your commandments.
119:7I will give thanks to You with an upright heart when I learn Your righteous judgments.
119:8I will keep Your statutes; do not utterly forsake me.
119:9BETH. How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word.
119:10With my whole heart I have sought You; do not let me stray from Your commandments.
119:11I have hidden Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.
119:12Blessed are You, O LORD; teach me Your statutes.
119:13With my lips I have recounted all the judgments of Your mouth.
119:14I rejoice in the way of Your testimonies as over all riches.
119:15I meditate on Your precepts and consider Your ways.
119:16I delight in Your statutes; I do not forget Your word.
119:17GIMEL. Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word.
119:18Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things from Your law.
119:19I am a sojourner on earth; do not hide Your commandments from me.
119:20My soul is crushed with longing for Your judgments at all times.
119:21You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, who stray from Your commandments.
119:22Take reproach and contempt from me, for I have kept Your testimonies.
119:23Though princes sit and speak against me, Your servant meditates on Your statutes.
119:24Your testimonies are also my delight and my counselors.
119:25DALETH. My soul clings to the dust; revive me according to Your word.
119:26I have recounted my ways, and You answered me; teach me Your statutes.
119:27Make me understand the way of Your precepts, and I will meditate on Your wonders.
119:28My soul melts with sorrow; strengthen me according to Your word.
119:29Remove from me the way of falsehood, and graciously grant me Your law.
119:30I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set Your judgments before me.
119:31I cling to Your testimonies; O LORD, do not put me to shame.
119:32I run in the path of Your commandments, for You enlarge my heart.
119:33HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, and I will keep it to the end.

119:36Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to dishonest gain.
119:37Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; revive me in Your way.

119:40Behold, I long for Your precepts; revive me in Your righteousness.
119:41WAW. Let Your steadfast love come to me, O LORD, Your salvation according to Your word.
119:42Then I will answer the one who reproaches me, for I trust in Your word.
119:43Do not utterly take the word of truth from my mouth, for I hope in Your judgment.
119:44I will keep Your law continually, forever and ever.
119:45I will walk in a spacious place, for I have sought Your precepts.
119:46I will speak of Your testimonies before kings, and I will not be ashamed.
119:47I delight in Your commandments, which I love.
119:48I lift up my hands to Your commandments, which I love, and I meditate on Your statutes.
119:49ZAYIN. Remember Your word to Your servant, in which You have made me hope.
119:50This is my comfort in my affliction: Your word has revived me.
119:51The arrogant utterly deride me, but I have not turned aside from Your law.
119:52I remember Your judgments of old, O LORD, and I comfort myself.
119:53Burning indignation has seized me because of the wicked, who forsake Your law.
119:54Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning.
119:55I remember Your Name in the night, O LORD, and I keep Your law.
119:56This has been mine: that I have kept Your precepts.
119:57HETH. The LORD is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words.
119:58I have sought Your favor with the whole heart; be gracious to me according to Your word.
119:59I considered my ways and turned my feet to Your testimonies.
119:60I hastened and did not delay to keep Your commandments.
119:61The cords of the wicked have entangled me, but I have not forgotten Your law.
119:62At midnight I rise to give thanks to You for Your righteous judgments.
119:63I am a companion of all who fear You, of those who keep Your precepts.
119:64The earth is full of Your steadfast love, O LORD; teach me Your statutes.

120:5Woe to me, for I sojourn in Meshech; I dwell among the tents of Kedar.
120:6My soul has dwelt too long with one who hates peace.
120:7I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.

Chapter 121

121:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. I lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where does my help come?
121:2My help comes from the LORD, Maker of the heavens and earth.
121:3He will not let your foot slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.
121:4Behold, He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.
121:5The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand.
121:6The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
121:7The LORD will keep you from all evil; He will keep your soul.
121:8The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from now on and forever.

Chapter 122

122:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. BY DAVID. I rejoiced when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
122:2Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.
122:3Jerusalem is built as a city joined firmly together.
122:4There the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, according to the testimony for Israel, to give thanks to the Name of the LORD.
122:5For there stand thrones for judgment, thrones of the house of David.
122:6Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; may those who love you prosper.
122:7May peace be within your walls, security within your citadels.
122:8For the sake of my brothers and my companions, I will now say, “Peace be within you.”
122:9For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good.

Chapter 123

123:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. To You I lift up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens.
123:2Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, until He is gracious to us.
123:3Be gracious to us, O LORD, be gracious to us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.
123:4Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those at ease, of the contempt of the arrogant.

Chapter 124

124:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. BY DAVID. If the LORD had not been for us—let Israel now say—
124:2If the LORD had not been for us when men rose up against us,
124:3Then they would have swallowed us alive, when their anger burned against us.
124:4Then the waters would have swept over us; the torrent would have passed over our soul.
124:5Then the raging waters would have passed over our soul.
124:6Blessed is the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
124:7Our soul has escaped like a bird from the snare of the birdcatchers; the snare was broken, and we escaped.
124:8Our help is in the Name of the LORD, Maker of the heavens and earth.

Chapter 125

125:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
125:2As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people, from now on and forever.
125:3For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the allotted land of the righteous, lest the righteous stretch out their hands to wrongdoing.
125:4Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, and to those upright in their hearts.
125:5But those who turn aside to their crooked ways, the LORD will lead away with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel.

Chapter 126

126:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like dreamers.
126:2Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing; then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”
126:3The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad.
126:4Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negev.
126:5Those who sow in tears shall reap with singing.
126:6He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing, shall surely return with singing, carrying his sheaves.

Chapter 127

127:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. BY SOLOMON. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
127:2It is vain for you to rise early, to sit up late, eating the bread of toil; for He gives sleep to His beloved one.
127:3Behold, sons are an inheritance from the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward.
127:4Like arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the sons of one’s youth.
127:5O the blessedness of the man who has filled his quiver with them; they shall not be ashamed when they speak with enemies in the gate.

Chapter 128

128:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. O the blessedness of everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways.
128:2You shall eat the labor of your hands; you are blessed, and it shall be good for you.
128:3Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons like olive plants around your table.
128:4Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD.
128:5May the LORD bless you from Zion; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life,
128:6And may you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel.

Chapter 129

129:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. “From my youth they have often oppressed me”—let Israel now say—
129:2“From my youth they have often oppressed me, yet they have not prevailed against me.
129:3Plowers plowed upon my back; they made their furrows long.
129:4The LORD is righteous; He has cut apart the cords of the wicked.”
129:5Let all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned back.
129:6Let them be like grass on the housetops, which withers before it is pulled up,
129:7With which the reaper does not fill his hand, nor the binder of sheaves his arms.
129:8And those who pass by do not say, “The blessing of the LORD be upon you; we bless you in the Name of the LORD.”

Chapter 130

130:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. From the depths I call to You, O LORD.
130:2Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
130:3If You, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
130:4But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be feared.
130:5I wait for the LORD; my soul waits, and in His word I hope.
130:6My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning—more than watchmen for the morning.
130:7O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with Him is abundant redemption.
130:8And He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Chapter 131

131:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. BY DAVID. O LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor are my eyes raised high; I do not walk in great matters, or in things too wonderful for me.
131:2Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.
131:3O Israel, hope in the LORD, from now on and forever.

Chapter 132

132:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. Remember, O LORD, David and all his affliction,
132:2How he swore to the LORD and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
132:3“I will not enter the tent of my house, nor go up to the couch of my bed;
132:4I will not give sleep to my eyes, nor slumber to my eyelids,
132:5Until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
132:6Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar.
132:7Let us go into His dwelling place; let us bow at His footstool.
132:8Arise, O LORD, to Your resting place, You and the Ark of Your strength.
132:9Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let Your faithful ones sing aloud.
132:10For the sake of David Your servant, do not turn away the face of Your Anointed One.
132:11The LORD has sworn truth to David; He will not turn back from it: “One of the fruit of your body I will set upon your throne.
132:12If your sons keep My covenant and My testimony that I teach them, their sons also shall sit upon your throne forever.”
132:13For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling:
132:14“This is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
132:15I will surely bless her provision; I will satisfy her poor with bread.
132:16I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her faithful ones shall surely sing aloud.
132:17There I will cause a horn to spring up for David; I have prepared a lamp for My Anointed One.
132:18I will clothe His enemies with shame, but His crown shall flourish upon Him.”

Chapter 133

133:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. BY DAVID. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity.
133:2It is like the good oil upon the head, descending upon the beard, Aaron’s beard, descending to the collar of his robes,
133:3Like the dew of Hermon descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the LORD commanded the blessing—life forever.

Chapter 134

134:1A SONG OF ASCENTS. Behold, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand in the house of the LORD by night.
134:2Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.
134:3May the LORD bless you from Zion, Maker of the heavens and earth.

Chapter 135

135:1Praise the Lord. Praise the Name of the LORD; praise Him, you servants of the LORD,
135:2Who stand in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God.
135:3Praise the Lord, for the LORD is good; sing praise to His Name, for it is pleasant.
135:4For the LORD has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel as His treasured possession.
135:5For I know that the LORD is great, and our Lord is above all gods.
135:6Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, in the heavens and on earth, in the seas and all the deeps.
135:7He causes vapors to rise from the ends of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, and brings forth wind from His storehouses.
135:8He struck the firstborn of Egypt, both man and beast.
135:9He sent signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants.
135:10He struck many nations and slew mighty kings,
135:11Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan.
135:12And He gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance to Israel His people.
135:13O LORD, Your Name endures forever; O LORD, Your memorial is from generation to generation.
135:14For the LORD judges His people, and has compassion on His servants.
135:15The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands.
135:16They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see.
135:17They have ears, but they do not hear; nor is there breath in their mouths.
135:18Those who make them become like them, as does everyone who trusts in them.
135:19O house of Israel, bless the LORD; O house of Aaron, bless the LORD.

137:4How shall we sing the song of the LORD in a foreign land?
137:5If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill.
137:6Let my tongue cling to my palate if I do not remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem above my chief joy.
137:7Remember, O LORD, against the sons of Edom, the day of Jerusalem, those who said, “Raze it, raze it, down to its foundation.”
137:8O daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, O the blessedness of him who repays you for what you have done to us.

138:1BY DAVID. I give thanks to You with all my heart; before the gods I sing praise to You.
138:2I bow toward Your holy temple, and give thanks to Your Name for Your steadfast love and Your truth; for You have exalted Your word above all Your Name.
138:3On the day I called, You answered me; You made me bold with strength in my soul.
138:4All the kings of the earth give thanks to You, O LORD, when they hear the words of Your mouth.
138:5And they sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD.
138:6For though the LORD is high, He regards the lowly; but the haughty He knows from afar.

141:1A PSALM OF DAVID. O LORD, I call to You; hasten to me. Give ear to my voice when I call to You.
141:2Let my prayer be set before You as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening offering.
141:3Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.
141:4Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked deeds with men who work iniquity; and let me not eat of their delicacies.
141:5Let the righteous strike me—it is steadfast love; let him reprove me—it is oil for my head; let my head not refuse it. Yet my prayer is still against their evil deeds.
141:6When their judges are thrown down from the sides of a rock, they will hear my words, for they are pleasant.
141:7As when one plows and breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the realm of the dead.
141:8But my eyes are toward You, O LORD, my Lord; in You I seek refuge; do not pour out my soul.
141:9Keep me from the trap they have laid for me, and from the snares of the workers of iniquity.
141:10Let the wicked fall into their own nets together, while I pass safely by.

Chapter 142

142:1AN INSTRUCTION OF DAVID. A PRAYER WHEN HE WAS IN THE CAVE.
142:2With my voice I cry to the LORD; with my voice I plead with the LORD for grace.
142:3I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare my distress before Him.
142:4When my spirit faints within me, You know my path; in the way where I walk, they have hidden a snare for me.
142:5Look to my right and see; there is no one who takes notice of me. Refuge has perished from me; there is no one who cares for my soul.
142:6I cry to You, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”
142:7Attend to my cry, for I have been brought very low; deliver me from my pursuers, for they are stronger than I.
142:8Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to Your Name; the righteous will surround me, for You will deal bountifully with me.

Chapter 143

143:1A PSALM OF DAVID. O LORD, hear my prayer; give ear to my supplications. Answer me in Your faithfulness, in Your righteousness.
143:2And do not enter into judgment with Your servant, for no one living will be justified before You.
143:3For the enemy has pursued my soul; he has crushed my life to the earth; he has made me dwell in dark places, like those long dead.
143:4Therefore my spirit faints within me; my heart is desolate within me.
143:5I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands.
143:6I spread out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You like a parched land. Interlude.
143:7Hasten, answer me, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me, lest I become like those who go down to the pit.
143:8Cause me to hear Your steadfast love in the morning, for I trust in You; cause me to know the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul.
143:9Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD; I flee to You for shelter.
143:10Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me on level ground.
143:11Revive me for Your Name’s sake, O LORD; in Your righteousness, bring my soul out of distress.
143:12And in Your steadfast love cut off my enemies, and destroy all who afflict my soul; for I am Your servant.

Chapter 144

144:1BY DAVID. Blessed is the LORD, my Rock, who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle.
144:2My steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer; my shield, in whom I take refuge; who subdues my people under me.
144:3O LORD, what is man, that You take notice of him? The son of man, that You regard him?
144:4Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.
144:5O LORD, bow Your heavens and come down; touch the mountains, and they smoke.
144:6Flash forth lightning and scatter them; send out Your arrows and rout them.
144:7Stretch out Your hand from on high; rescue me and deliver me from many waters, from the hand of foreigners,
144:8Whose mouth speaks falsehood, and whose right hand is a right hand of deceit.
144:9O God, I will sing to You a new song; on a ten-stringed harp I will sing praise to You,
144:10Who gives deliverance to kings, who rescues David His servant from the deadly sword.
144:11Rescue me and deliver me from the hand of foreigners, whose mouth speaks falsehood, and whose right hand is a right hand of deceit,
144:12That our sons may be like plants, full-grown in their youth; our daughters like corner pillars, cut for the structure of a palace.
144:13May our storehouses be full, furnishing produce of every kind; may our flocks multiply by thousands, by tens of thousands in our fields.
144:14May our oxen be well laden; may there be no breach, no going out, and no cry in our squares.
144:15O the blessedness of the people for whom it is so; O the blessedness of the people whose God is the LORD.

Chapter 145

145:1A PRAISE OF DAVID. I will exalt You, my God, O King, and bless Your Name forever and ever.
145:2Every day I will bless You, and praise Your Name forever and ever.
145:3Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable.
145:4One generation praises Your works to another, and declares Your mighty acts.
145:5On the glorious splendor of Your majesty and on the works of Your wonders I will meditate.
145:6They tell of the power of Your awesome acts, and I will recount Your greatness.
145:7They pour forth the memory of Your abundant goodness, and sing aloud of Your righteousness.
145:8The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and great in steadfast love.
145:9The LORD is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works.
145:10O LORD, all Your works give thanks to You, and Your faithful ones bless You.
145:11They speak of the glory of Your kingdom, and tell of Your might,
145:12To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of His kingdom.
145:13Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and Your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful in all His words, and kind in all His works.
145:14The LORD upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.
145:15The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in due season.
145:16You open Your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
145:17The LORD is righteous in all His ways, and kind in all His works.
145:18The LORD is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.
145:19He fulfills the desire of those who fear Him; He hears their cry, and saves them.
145:20The LORD preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He destroys.
145:21My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD; and let all flesh bless His Holy Name forever and ever.

Chapter 146

146:1Praise the Lord. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
146:2I will praise the LORD while I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
146:3Do not put your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no deliverance.
146:4His spirit goes forth; he returns to the earth. On that very day his plans perish.
146:5O the blessedness of him whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God,
146:6Maker of the heavens and earth, the sea and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever,
146:7Who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free.
146:8The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; the LORD raises up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous.
146:9The LORD watches over sojourners; He upholds the fatherless and the widow, but He makes crooked the way of the wicked.
146:10The LORD reigns forever, Your God, O Zion, from generation to generation. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 147

147:1Praise the Lord. For it is good to sing praise to our God; for it is pleasant, and praise is fitting.
147:2The LORD builds Jerusalem; He gathers the outcasts of Israel.
147:3He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.
147:4He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.
147:5Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.
147:6The LORD lifts up the humble; He casts the wicked to the ground.
147:7Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise to our God with a lyre,
147:8Who covers the heavens with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who causes grass to grow on the mountains,
147:9Who gives the beast its food, and the young ravens when they call.
147:10He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.
147:11The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who wait for His steadfast love.
147:12Glorify the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion.
147:13For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your sons within you.
147:14He makes peace within your borders; He satisfies you with the finest wheat.
147:15He sends His command to the earth; His word runs swiftly.
147:16He gives snow like wool; He scatters frost like ashes.
147:17He casts forth His ice like crumbs; who can stand before His cold?
147:18He sends His word and melts them; He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow.
147:19He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel.
147:20He has not dealt thus with any nation; they do not know His judgments. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 148

148:1Praise the Lord. Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the heights.
148:2Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, all His hosts.
148:3Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all stars of light.
148:4Praise Him, heavens of heavens, and waters above the heavens.
148:5Let them praise the Name of the LORD, for He commanded, and they were created.
148:6He established them forever and ever; He gave a statute, and they do not pass away.
148:7Praise the LORD from the earth, sea dragons and all deeps,
148:8Fire and hail, snow and vapor, storm wind fulfilling His word,
148:9Mountains and all heights, fruit trees and all cedars,
148:10Wild beasts and all livestock, creeping things and winged birds,
148:11Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth,
148:12Young men and also maidens, old men with youths.
148:13Let them praise the Name of the LORD, for His Name alone is exalted; His splendor is above earth and heavens.
148:14He has exalted the horn of His people, the praise of all His faithful ones, of the sons of Israel, a people near Him. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 149

149:1Praise the Lord. Sing to the LORD a new song, His praise in the assembly of the faithful ones.
149:2Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King.
149:3Let them praise His Name with dancing; let them sing praise to Him with tambourine and lyre.
149:4For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He adorns the humble with salvation.
149:5Let the faithful ones exult in glory; let them sing aloud on their beds.
149:6Let the high praises of God be in their throat, and a two-edged sword in their hand,
149:7To execute vengeance among the nations, punishments among the peoples,
149:8To bind their kings with chains, and their honored ones with fetters of iron,
149:9To execute on them the judgment written; this is honor for all His faithful ones. Praise the Lord.

Chapter 150

150:1Praise the Lord. Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in the expanse of His might.
150:2Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to His abundant greatness.
150:3Praise Him with the blast of the horn; praise Him with harp and lyre.
150:4Praise Him with tambourine and dance; praise Him with strings and pipe.
150:5Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with clashing cymbals.
150:6Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the Lord.
