Chapter 1

1:1The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah:
1:2Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken: “I have reared and raised children, but they have rebelled against Me.
1:3The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s manger; Israel does not know; My people do not understand.”
1:4Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the LORD; they have despised the Holy One of Israel; they have turned away backward.
1:5Why should you be struck again? You continue in rebellion. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart is faint.
1:6From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it—only wounds, bruises, and open sores. They have not been pressed out, nor bound up, nor softened with oil.
1:7Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire. Foreigners devour your ground before your eyes; it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners.
1:8And the daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a lodge in a cucumber field, like a city besieged.
1:9Unless the LORD of Hosts had left us a small remnant, we would have become like Sodom; we would have resembled Gomorrah.
1:10Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; give ear to the Law of our God, you people of Gomorrah.
1:11“What is the abundance of your sacrifices to Me?” says the LORD. “I am full of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fattened beasts; I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs, or male goats.
1:12When you come to appear before Me, who has required this from your hand, this trampling of My courts?
1:13Bring no more worthless offerings. Incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and Sabbath, the calling of an assembly—I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly.
1:14My soul hates your new moons and your appointed feasts; they have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them.
1:15When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; even though you multiply prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.
1:16Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean. Remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes. Cease to do evil;
1:17learn to do good. Seek justice; correct oppression. Defend the fatherless; plead for the widow.
1:18“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be as wool.
1:19If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;
1:20but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword”; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
1:21How the faithful city has become a prostitute! She was full of justice; righteousness lodged in her—but now murderers.
1:22Your silver has become dross; your wine is diluted with water.
1:23Your rulers are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and pursues gifts. They do not defend the fatherless, and the widow’s plea does not come before them.
1:24Therefore—the utterance of the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: “Ah, I will be relieved of My adversaries and avenge Myself on My enemies.
1:25I will turn My hand against you; I will smelt away your dross as with lye and remove all your alloy.
1:26I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called, The City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.”
1:27Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness.
1:28But rebels and sinners shall be broken together, and those who forsake the LORD shall be consumed.
1:29For you shall be ashamed of the oaks that you desired, and confounded because of the gardens that you chose.
1:30For you shall be like an oak whose leaf withers, and like a garden without water.
1:31The strong shall become tinder, and his work a spark; both shall burn together, with none to quench them.

Chapter 2

2:1The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:
2:2And it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.
2:3And many peoples shall go and say, “Come, and let us ascend to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us His ways, and we will walk in His paths.” For the Law shall go forth from Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
2:4He shall judge between the nations and decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war anymore.
2:5O house of Jacob, come, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.
2:6For You have abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled with customs from the east and are diviners like the Philistines, and they join hands with the children of foreigners.
2:7Their land is filled with silver and gold, and there is no end to their treasures; their land is filled with horses, and there is no end to their chariots.
2:8Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.
2:9So the lowly man bows down, and the great man is humbled; do not forgive them.
2:10Enter into the rock and hide in the dust, from the terror of the LORD and from the splendor of His majesty.
2:11The haughty eyes of man shall be humbled, and the loftiness of men shall be brought low; and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
2:12For the LORD of Hosts has a day against everyone who is proud and high, against everyone who is lifted up, that he may be brought low;
2:13against all the cedars of Lebanon, high and lifted up, and against all the oaks of Bashan;
2:14against all the high mountains and against all the lifted hills;
2:15against every high tower and against every fortified wall;
2:16against all the ships of Tarshish and against all beautiful ships.
2:17The haughtiness of man shall be bowed down, and the loftiness of men shall be humbled; and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
2:18And the idols shall utterly vanish.
2:19Men shall enter caves in the rocks and holes in the ground, from the terror of the LORD and from the splendor of His majesty, when He rises to terrify the earth.
2:20In that day a man shall cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which they made for him to worship, to the moles and to the bats,
2:21to enter the clefts of the rocks and the crags of the cliffs, from the terror of the LORD and from the splendor of His majesty, when He rises to terrify the earth.
2:22Stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for of what account is he?

Chapter 3

3:1For behold, the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, is removing from Jerusalem and from Judah every support and every staff, every support of bread and every support of water;
3:2the mighty man and the man of war, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder;
3:3the captain of fifty and the man of rank; the counselor, the skilled craftsman, and the expert enchanter.
3:4“I will make youths their rulers, and children shall rule over them.”
3:5The people shall oppress one another, each man his neighbor; the youth shall act insolently toward the old, and the despised toward the honored.
3:6When a man takes hold of his brother in his father’s house, saying, “You have a cloak; you shall be our ruler, and this ruin shall be under your hand,”
3:7he shall cry out in that day, saying, “I will not be a healer, for in my house there is neither bread nor cloak. Do not make me ruler of the people.”
3:8For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their tongue and their deeds are against the LORD, defying His glorious presence.
3:9The look on their faces testifies against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom and do not hide it. Woe to them, for they have brought evil upon themselves.
3:10Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.
3:11Woe to the wicked! It shall go badly with him, for what his hands have done shall be done to him.
3:12My people—children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. My people—those who guide you mislead you and swallow up the course of your paths.
3:13The LORD has taken His stand to contend; He stands to judge the peoples.
3:14The LORD enters into judgment with the elders of His people and its rulers: “You have devoured the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses.
3:15What do you mean by crushing My people and grinding the faces of the poor?” An utterance of the Lord, the LORD of Hosts.
3:16Then the LORD said, “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, walking and mincing as they go, making a jingling with their feet,
3:17therefore the Lord will strike the scalps of the daughters of Zion with scabs, and the LORD will lay their foreheads bare.”
3:18In that day the Lord will remove the beauty of their ankle ornaments, headbands, and crescents;
3:19the pendants, bracelets, and veils;
3:20the headdresses, ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, and amulets;
3:21the signet rings and nose rings;
3:22the festal robes, mantles, cloaks, and purses;
3:23the mirrors, fine linen garments, turbans, and shawls.
3:24Instead of perfume there shall be stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of well-set hair, baldness; instead of a rich robe, a belt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty.
3:25Your men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty men in battle.
3:26Her gates shall lament and mourn; emptied, she shall sit upon the ground.

Chapter 4

4:1And seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothing; only let us be called by your name. Take away our reproach.”
4:2In that day the Branch of the LORD shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and splendor of the survivors of Israel.
4:3And it shall come to pass that he who remains in Zion and is left in Jerusalem shall be called holy—everyone recorded for life in Jerusalem—
4:4when the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the blood of Jerusalem from her midst by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of burning.
4:5Then the LORD will create over every dwelling place of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory there shall be a canopy.
4:6And there shall be a shelter for shade from the heat by day, and for refuge and a hiding place from storm and rain.

Chapter 5

5:1Let me sing for my beloved my song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.
5:2He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with a choice vine. He built a tower in its midst and hewed out a wine vat in it. He waited for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.
5:3“And now, O inhabitant of Jerusalem and man of Judah, please judge between Me and My vineyard.
5:4What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I waited for it to yield grapes, did it yield wild grapes?
5:5And now, let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled.
5:6I will make it a wasteland; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and brier and thorn shall rise up. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.”
5:7For the vineyard of the LORD of Hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah His cherished planting. He waited for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, a cry.
5:8Woe to those who join house to house and add field to field, until there is no room and you dwell alone in the midst of the land.
5:9In my hearing the LORD of Hosts has sworn: “Surely many houses shall become desolate, great and beautiful houses without inhabitant.
5:10For ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and a homer of seed shall yield an ephah.”
5:11Woe to those who rise early in the morning to pursue strong drink, who linger into the evening as wine inflames them.
5:12Lyre and harp, tambourine and flute, and wine are at their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, nor do they see the work of His hands.
5:13Therefore My people go into exile for lack of knowledge; their honored men are famished, and their multitude is parched with thirst.
5:14Therefore the realm of the dead has enlarged its throat and opened its mouth beyond measure; Jerusalem’s splendor and multitude, her revelers and those who exult in her, shall descend into it.
5:15Man is bowed down, and the great man is humbled; the eyes of the haughty are brought low.
5:16But the LORD of Hosts is exalted in justice, and the holy God shows Himself holy in righteousness.
5:17Then lambs shall graze as in their own pasture, and strangers shall feed in the ruins of the rich.
5:18Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, and sin as with cart ropes;
5:19who say, “Let Him hurry; let Him hasten His work, that we may see it. Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come, that we may know it.”
5:20Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
5:21Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and discerning in their own sight.
5:22Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and men of strength at mixing strong drink;
5:23who acquit the wicked for a bribe, and deprive the righteous of justice.
5:24Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours stubble, and dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root shall rot, and their blossom shall go up like dust; because they have rejected the Law of the LORD of Hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
5:25Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against His people, and He stretched out His hand against them and struck them. The mountains trembled, and their corpses were like refuse in the streets. For all this His anger has not turned away, and His hand is still stretched out.
5:26He will raise a standard for a distant nation and whistle for it from the ends of the earth; and behold, it comes swiftly and speedily.
5:27None among them is weary or stumbles; none slumbers or sleeps. No belt at the waist is loosened, and no sandal strap is broken.
5:28Their arrows are sharp, and all their bows are bent. Their horses’ hooves are reckoned as flint, and their wheels as a whirlwind.
5:29Their roaring is like a lioness; they roar like young lions. They growl and seize the prey, and carry it away, with none to rescue.
5:30They shall roar over it in that day like the roaring of the sea. If one looks to the land, behold, darkness and distress; the light is darkened by its clouds.

Chapter 6

6:1In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.
6:2Burning ones stood above Him; each had six wings: with two each covered his face, with two each covered his feet, and with two each flew.
6:3And one called to another and said: “HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is the LORD of Hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.”
6:4The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.
6:5Then I said, “Woe to me, for I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.”
6:6Then one of the burning ones flew to me, and in his hand was a burning coal, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
6:7He touched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is removed, and your sin is atoned for.”
6:8Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” And I said, “Here I am; send me.”
6:9Then He said, “Go, and say to this people: ‘Keep hearing, but do not understand; keep seeing, but do not perceive.’
6:10Make the heart of this people dull, make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and turn and be healed.”
6:11Then I said, “How long, O Lord?” And He said, “Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, houses without man, and the ground lies ruined and desolate;
6:12until the LORD has sent men far away, and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
6:13And though a tenth remains in it, it shall again be burned; like a terebinth or an oak whose stump remains when it is felled, the holy seed is its stump.”

Chapter 7

7:1And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah, king of Israel, came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not prevail against it.
7:2And it was reported to the house of David, saying, “Aram has allied itself with Ephraim.” And his heart and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.
7:3Then the LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-Jashub, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, by the highway of the Launderer’s Field;
7:4and say to him: Take heed and be quiet. Do not fear, and do not let your heart grow faint because of these two tails of smoking firebrands—because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah.
7:5Because Aram, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have plotted evil against you, saying,
7:6‘Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and make a breach in it for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeal as king in its midst,’
7:7thus says the Lord, the LORD: ‘It shall not stand, nor shall it come to pass.
7:8For the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within sixty-five years Ephraim shall be shattered, so that it is no longer a people.
7:9And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you do not stand firm in faith, you shall not stand at all.’”
7:10And the LORD spoke again to Ahaz, saying,
7:11“Ask a sign from the LORD your God; make it deep below or high above.”
7:12But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the LORD.”
7:13Then he said, “Hear now, O house of David: is it too little for you to weary men, that you also weary my God?
7:14Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His Name Immanuel.
7:15He shall eat curds and honey when He knows to refuse evil and choose good.
7:16For before the youth knows to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread shall be forsaken.
7:17The LORD shall bring upon you, upon your people, and upon your father’s house days unlike any since Ephraim departed from Judah—He shall bring the king of Assyria.”
7:18And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall whistle for the fly at the farthest channels of Egypt, and for the bee in the land of Assyria.
7:19And they shall come and settle, all of them, in the desolate ravines, in the clefts of the rocks, on all the thornbushes, and at all the watering places.
7:20In that day the Lord shall shave with a razor hired beyond the Euphrates—with the king of Assyria—the head and the hair of the feet; it shall also sweep away the beard.
7:21And it shall come to pass in that day that a man shall keep alive a young cow and two sheep;
7:22and because of the abundance of milk they yield, he shall eat curds; for everyone left in the midst of the land shall eat curds and honey.
7:23And it shall come to pass in that day that every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand pieces of silver shall become briers and thorns.
7:24Men shall come there with bow and arrows, for all the land shall be briers and thorns.
7:25And as for all the hills once cultivated with the hoe, you shall not go there for fear of briers and thorns; they shall become a place where cattle are turned loose and sheep tread.

Chapter 8

8:1Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large tablet and write on it with an ordinary stylus: Swift is the spoil, speedy is the prey.”
8:2And I took faithful witnesses for myself: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.
8:3Then I went in to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. And the LORD said to me, “Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz,
8:4for before the child knows to cry, ‘My father,’ and, ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be carried away before the king of Assyria.”
8:5And the LORD spoke to me again, saying,
8:6“Because this people has refused the waters of Shiloah that flow softly, and rejoices in Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
8:7therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing upon them the waters of the Euphrates, mighty and abundant—the king of Assyria and all his glory. It shall rise over all its channels and overflow all its banks;
8:8and it shall sweep on into Judah, overflowing and passing through, reaching even to the neck. And the outspread wings shall fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.”
8:9Be shattered, O peoples, and be broken; give ear, all you distant lands. Gird yourselves, and be broken; gird yourselves, and be broken.
8:10Take counsel, and it shall come to nothing; speak a word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.
8:11For thus the LORD spoke to me with His strong hand upon me, warning me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,
8:12“Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread.
8:13The LORD of Hosts—Him you shall regard as holy; He shall be your Fear, and He shall be your Dread.
8:14And He shall be a sanctuary, but also a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
8:15And many among them shall stumble; they shall fall and be broken, be snared and captured.”
8:16Bind up the testimony; seal the Law among my disciples.
8:17And I shall wait for the LORD, who hides His face from the house of Jacob, and I shall hope in Him.
8:18Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of Hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
8:19And when they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who chirp and mutter,” should not a people consult its God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?
8:20To the Law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, there is no dawn for them.
8:21They shall pass through the land hard-pressed and hungry; and when they are hungry, they shall rage and curse their king and their God, and look upward.
8:22Then they shall look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they shall be driven into thick darkness.
8:23But there shall be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time He brought the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali into contempt, but in the latter time He has made glorious the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

Chapter 9

9:1The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; upon those dwelling in a land of deep shadow, light has shone.
9:2You have multiplied the nation; You have increased its joy. They rejoice before You as with joy at the harvest, as men rejoice when they divide spoil.
9:3For You have broken the yoke of his burden, the bar upon his shoulder, and the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
9:4For every boot of the tramping warrior and every garment rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
9:5For a Child is born to us; a Son is given to us; and the dominion shall be upon His shoulder. And His Name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Ruler of Peace.
9:6Of the increase of His dominion and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to establish it and uphold it with judgment and righteousness, from now on and forever. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts shall do this.
9:7The Lord has sent a word against Jacob, and it has fallen upon Israel.
9:8And all the people shall know it—Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria—who say in pride and arrogance of heart,
9:9“Bricks have fallen, but we shall build with hewn stone; sycamores have been cut down, but we shall replace them with cedars.”
9:10And the LORD shall raise up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and stir up his enemies:
9:11Aram from the east and the Philistines from the west, and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this His anger has not turned away, and His hand is still stretched out.
9:12Yet the people have not returned to Him who struck them, nor have they sought the LORD of Hosts.
9:13Therefore the LORD shall cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed, in one day.
9:14The elder and honored man is the head, and the prophet who teaches falsehood is the tail.
9:15For those who guide this people lead them astray, and those guided by them are swallowed up.
9:16Therefore the Lord shall not rejoice over their young men, nor have compassion on their orphans and widows; for everyone is godless and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this His anger has not turned away, and His hand is still stretched out.
9:17For wickedness burns like a fire; it devours brier and thorn, and kindles the thickets of the forest, so that they roll upward in a column of smoke.
9:18Through the wrath of the LORD of Hosts the land is scorched, and the people are fuel for the fire; no man spares his brother.
9:19One devours on the right and remains hungry; he eats on the left and is not satisfied. Each devours the flesh of his own arm:
9:20Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; together they are against Judah. For all this His anger has not turned away, and His hand is still stretched out.

Chapter 10

10:1Woe to those who decree wicked statutes, and to the scribes who record oppression,
10:2to turn aside the poor from justice and rob the afflicted of My people of their right, that widows may be their prey and orphans their spoil.
10:3And what shall you do in the day of visitation, in the ruin that comes from afar? To whom shall you flee for help? And where shall you leave your glory?
10:4Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this His anger has not turned away, and His hand is still stretched out.
10:5Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger; the staff in its hand is My indignation.
10:6I send it against a godless nation, and against a people under My wrath I command it, to seize spoil and take prey, and to tread them down like mud in the streets.
10:7But it does not intend this, nor does its heart think so; for destruction is in its heart, and to cut off nations—not a few.
10:8For he says, “Are not all my princes kings?
10:9Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus?
10:10As my hand has reached the kingdoms of worthless gods, whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
10:11shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her worthless gods?”
10:12And it shall come to pass, when the Lord has finished all His work on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, that He shall punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the glory of his haughty eyes.
10:13For he has said, “By the power of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of peoples and plundered their treasures, and like a mighty one I have brought down those who sat on thrones.
10:14My hand found the wealth of the peoples as one finds a nest; and as one gathers forsaken eggs, I gathered all the earth. There was none who moved a wing, opened a mouth, or chirped.”
10:15Shall the axe boast against him who hews with it? Shall the saw exalt itself against him who wields it? As though a rod could wield those who lift it, or a staff could lift him who is not wood.
10:16Therefore the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, shall send wasting sickness among his stout warriors; and beneath his glory He shall kindle a burning like the burning of fire.
10:17And the Light of Israel shall become a fire, and His Holy One a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day.
10:18And He shall consume the glory of his forest and his fruitful land, both soul and body; it shall be as when a sick man wastes away.
10:19And the remaining trees of his forest shall be so few that a child may write them down.
10:20And it shall come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob shall no longer lean upon him who struck them, but shall lean upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
10:21A remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, to the Mighty God.
10:22For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them shall return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
10:23For the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, shall carry out a complete and decreed destruction in the midst of all the land.
10:24Therefore thus says the Lord, the LORD of Hosts: “O My people who dwell in Zion, do not be afraid of Assyria when it strikes you with a rod and lifts its staff against you as Egypt did.
10:25For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be ended, and My anger shall turn to its destruction.”
10:26And the LORD of Hosts shall awaken a scourge against it, as when He struck Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His rod shall be over the sea, and He shall lift it as He did in Egypt.
10:27And it shall come to pass in that day that his burden shall be removed from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke shall be broken because of fatness.
10:28He has come against Aiath; he has passed through Migron; at Michmash he stores his baggage.
10:29They have crossed the pass; they have lodged at Geba. Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul has fled.
10:30Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim; listen, O Laish; O afflicted Anathoth!
10:31Madmenah has fled; the inhabitants of Gebim seek refuge.
10:32This very day he shall halt at Nob; he shakes his fist at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
10:33Behold, the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, shall lop off the branches with terrifying power; the tall in stature shall be cut down, and the lofty shall be brought low.
10:34He shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by the Mighty One.

Chapter 11

11:1And a shoot shall come forth from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
11:2And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him: the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
11:3And His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what His eyes see, nor decide by what His ears hear;
11:4but with righteousness He shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall put the wicked to death.
11:5Righteousness shall be the belt around His waist, and faithfulness the sash around His hips.
11:6And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat; the calf, the young lion, and the fattened calf shall be together, and a little child shall lead them.
11:7The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
11:8And the nursing child shall play by the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand upon the viper’s den.
11:9They shall not do evil or destroy in all My holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
11:10And it shall come to pass in that day that the Root of Jesse shall stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations shall seek Him, and His resting place shall be glorious.
11:11And it shall come to pass in that day that the Lord shall set His hand again a second time to recover the remnant of His people who remain, from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the islands of the sea.
11:12And He shall raise a banner for the nations, gather the outcasts of Israel, and assemble the scattered of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
11:13Then the jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off. Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not harass Ephraim.
11:14But they shall swoop down upon the shoulder of the Philistines toward the west; together they shall plunder the people of the east. Edom and Moab shall be under their hand, and the Ammonites shall obey them.
11:15And the LORD shall devote to destruction the tongue of the Sea of Egypt; He shall wave His hand over the Euphrates with the blast of His wind, strike it into seven streams, and cause men to cross in sandals.
11:16And there shall be a highway for the remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel in the day he came up from the land of Egypt.

Chapter 12

12:1And you shall say in that day: “I give thanks to You, O LORD. Though You were angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You comfort me.
12:2Behold, God is my salvation; I shall trust and not be afraid. For the LORD, the LORD Himself, is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.”
12:3And with joy you shall draw water from the springs of salvation.
12:4And you shall say in that day: “Give thanks to the LORD; call upon His Name. Make His deeds known among the peoples; proclaim that His Name is exalted.
12:5Sing praise to the LORD, for He has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth.
12:6Cry aloud and sing, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”

Chapter 13

13:1The oracle concerning Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw:
13:2Raise a banner on a bare mountain; lift up your voice to them. Wave the hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles.
13:3I have commanded My consecrated ones; I have summoned My mighty warriors for My anger, those who exult in My triumph.
13:4A sound of tumult on the mountains, like that of a great people; a sound of uproar from kingdoms, from nations gathered together. The LORD of Hosts is mustering an army for battle.
13:5They come from a distant land, from the end of the heavens—the LORD and the weapons of His indignation—to destroy the whole land.
13:6Wail, for the Day of the LORD is near; it comes as destruction from the Almighty.
13:7Therefore all hands shall fall limp, and every human heart shall melt.
13:8They shall be terrified; pangs and anguish shall seize them. They shall writhe like a woman in labor. They shall look aghast at one another; their faces shall be aflame.
13:9Behold, the Day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and destroy its sinners from it.
13:10For the stars of the heavens and their constellations shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened when it rises, and the moon shall not shed its light.
13:11And I shall punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity. I shall put an end to the pride of the arrogant and bring low the haughtiness of the ruthless.
13:12I shall make a man scarcer than fine gold, and mankind scarcer than the pure gold of Ophir.
13:13Therefore I shall make the heavens tremble, and the earth shall shake from its place, at the wrath of the LORD of Hosts and in the day of His fierce anger.
13:14And it shall be like a hunted gazelle, and like sheep with no one to gather them: each shall turn to his own people, and each shall flee to his own land.
13:15Everyone who is found shall be thrust through, and everyone captured shall fall by the sword.
13:16Their infants shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be plundered, and their wives violated.
13:17Behold, I am stirring up the Medes against them, who do not value silver and take no delight in gold.
13:18Their bows shall strike down young men; they shall have no compassion on the fruit of the womb; their eyes shall not pity children.
13:19And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory and pride of the Chaldeans, shall be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.
13:20It shall never be inhabited, nor dwelt in from generation to generation. No Arabian shall pitch his tent there, and no shepherd shall make his flocks lie down there.
13:21But desert creatures shall lie there, and their houses shall be full of owls; ostriches shall dwell there, and wild goats shall dance there.
13:22Hyenas shall cry in its towers, and jackals in its palaces of delight. Its time is near to come, and its days shall not be prolonged.

Chapter 14

14:1For the LORD shall have compassion on Jacob and shall again choose Israel, and shall give them rest in their own land. The sojourner shall join them and attach himself to the house of Jacob.
14:2And peoples shall take them and bring them to their place; and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD as male and female servants. They shall take captive those who captured them, and rule over their oppressors.
14:3And it shall come to pass in the day the LORD gives you rest from your sorrow, your turmoil, and the harsh bondage imposed upon you,
14:4that you shall take up this taunt against the king of Babylon and say: “How the oppressor has ceased; how the raging has ceased!
14:5The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of rulers,
14:6which struck peoples in wrath with unceasing blows, which ruled nations in anger with unrestrained persecution.
14:7All the earth is at rest and quiet; they break forth into singing.
14:8Even the cypresses rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, ‘Since you have lain down, no woodcutter comes up against us.’
14:9The realm of the dead beneath is stirred to meet you at your coming. It awakens the departed spirits for you, all the leaders of the earth; it raises all the kings of the nations from their thrones.
14:10All of them shall answer and say to you, ‘You too have become weak as we are; you have become like us.’
14:11Your splendor has been brought down to the realm of the dead, along with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread beneath you, and worms cover you.
14:12How you have fallen from the heavens, O shining one, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, you who weakened the nations.
14:13For you said in your heart: ‘I shall ascend into the heavens; I shall raise my throne above the stars of God. I shall sit on the mountain of assembly, in the farthest reaches of the north.
14:14I shall ascend above the heights of the clouds; I shall make myself like the Most High.’
14:15Yet you shall be brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.
14:16Those who see you shall stare at you and ponder you: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms,
14:17who made the world like a wilderness and overthrew its cities, who would not release his prisoners to their homes?’
14:18All the kings of the nations, all of them, lie down in glory, each in his own house;
14:19but you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch, clothed with the slain, with those pierced by the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit, like a corpse trampled underfoot.
14:20You shall not be joined with them in burial, because you destroyed your land and killed your people. The offspring of evildoers shall never again be named.
14:21Prepare slaughter for his sons because of the iniquity of their fathers, lest they rise and possess the land and fill the face of the world with cities.”
14:22“And I shall rise against them”—an utterance of the LORD of Hosts—“and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, offspring and posterity”—an utterance of the LORD.
14:23“And I shall make it a possession of the hedgehog and pools of water; and I shall sweep it with the broom of destruction”—an utterance of the LORD of Hosts.
14:24The LORD of Hosts has sworn, saying, “Surely as I have planned, so it shall be; and as I have purposed, so it shall stand:
14:25to break Assyria in My land and trample it on My mountains. Then its yoke shall be removed from them, and its burden removed from their shoulders.
14:26This is the purpose purposed concerning the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out over all the nations.
14:27For the LORD of Hosts has purposed, and who can annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?”
14:28In the year King Ahaz died came this oracle:
14:29“Do not rejoice, all Philistia, because the rod that struck you is broken; for from the serpent’s root shall come forth a viper, and its fruit shall be a flying fiery serpent.
14:30The firstborn of the poor shall graze, and the needy shall lie down in safety; but I shall kill your root with famine, and it shall slay your remnant.
14:31Wail, O gate; cry out, O city. Melt away, all Philistia; for smoke comes from the north, and there is no straggler in its ranks.”
14:32And what shall one answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD has founded Zion, and in her the afflicted of His people find refuge.

Chapter 15

15:1The oracle concerning Moab. Because in a night Ar of Moab is laid waste and cut off; because in a night Kir of Moab is laid waste and cut off.
15:2He has gone up to Bayith and Dibon, to the high places, to weep. Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba. Every head is bald, and every beard is cut off.
15:3In its streets they gird themselves with sackcloth; on its rooftops and in its squares everyone wails, going down in tears.
15:4Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voice is heard as far as Jahaz. Therefore the armed men of Moab shout; his soul trembles within him.
15:5My heart cries out for Moab. Her fugitives flee to Zoar, to Eglath-shelishiyah. For they go up the ascent of Luhith weeping; on the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of destruction.
15:6For the waters of Nimrim are desolate; the grass has withered, the vegetation has failed, and no green thing remains.
15:7Therefore the abundance they have gained and what they have stored they carry across the Brook of the Willows.
15:8For the cry has gone around the border of Moab; its wailing reaches Eglaim, and its wailing reaches Beer-Elim.
15:9For the waters of Dimon are full of blood; yet I shall bring more upon Dimon: a lion upon the fugitives of Moab and upon the remnant of the land.

Chapter 16

16:1Send the lamb to the ruler of the land, from Sela through the wilderness to the mountain of the daughter of Zion.
16:2And like a wandering bird cast out of the nest, so shall the daughters of Moab be at the fords of the Arnon.
16:3Give counsel; execute judgment. Make your shade like night at high noon. Hide the outcasts; do not betray the fugitive.
16:4Let My outcasts dwell with you, O Moab; be a shelter to them from the destroyer. For the extortioner has ceased, devastation has ended, and the trampler has vanished from the land.
16:5Then a throne shall be established in steadfast love; and One shall sit upon it in faithfulness, in the tent of David, judging and seeking justice, and swift to do righteousness.
16:6We have heard of the pride of Moab—very proud—of his pride, his arrogance, and his wrath; his idle boasts are not true.
16:7Therefore Moab shall wail for Moab; all of it shall wail. You shall mourn for the raisin cakes of Kir-hareseth, utterly stricken.
16:8For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah. The lords of the nations have struck down its choice vines, which reached as far as Jazer and wandered into the wilderness. Its shoots spread abroad and crossed the sea.
16:9Therefore I weep with the weeping of Jazer for the vine of Sibmah. I drench you with my tears, O Heshbon and Elealeh, for the shout over your summer fruit and your harvest has fallen silent.
16:10Gladness and joy are removed from the fruitful field; in the vineyards there is no singing or shouting. No treader treads wine in the presses; I have caused the shout to cease.
16:11Therefore my inmost being moans like a harp for Moab, and my inward parts for Kir-hareseth.
16:12And it shall come to pass, when Moab appears and wearies himself on the high place, that he shall enter his sanctuary to pray, but he shall not prevail.
16:13This is the word the LORD spoke concerning Moab in time past.
16:14But now the LORD has spoken, saying, “Within three years, as the years of a hired worker, the glory of Moab shall be brought into contempt, despite all its great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and feeble.”

Chapter 17

17:1The oracle concerning Damascus. Behold, Damascus shall cease to be a city and shall become a heap of ruins.
17:2The cities of Aroer shall be forsaken; they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down with none to make them afraid.
17:3The fortress shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus; and the remnant of Aram shall be like the glory of the sons of Israel—an utterance of the LORD of Hosts.
17:4And it shall come to pass in that day that the glory of Jacob shall be brought low, and the fatness of his flesh shall grow lean.
17:5It shall be as when the reaper gathers standing grain, and his arm reaps the heads of grain; it shall be as when one gleans heads of grain in the Valley of Rephaim.
17:6Yet gleanings shall be left in it, as when an olive tree is beaten: two or three berries at the top of the highest branch, four or five on its fruitful boughs—an utterance of the LORD, the God of Israel.
17:7In that day man shall look to his Maker, and his eyes shall look to the Holy One of Israel.
17:8He shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, nor regard what his fingers have made—the sacred poles and the incense altars.
17:9In that day his fortified cities shall be like the forsaken places of the forest and the hilltop, which they abandoned before the sons of Israel; and there shall be desolation.
17:10For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not remembered the Rock of your stronghold. Therefore you plant pleasant plants and set out shoots of a foreign vine.
17:11In the day you plant them, you make them grow, and in the morning you make your seed flourish; yet the harvest shall be a heap in a day of grief and incurable pain.
17:12Woe to the tumult of many peoples, who roar like the roaring of the seas, and to the rushing of nations, who rush like the rushing of mighty waters.
17:13The nations rush like the rushing of many waters; but He rebukes them, and they flee far away, chased like chaff on the mountains before the wind, and like whirling dust before the storm.
17:14At evening, behold, terror; before morning, they are no more. This is the portion of those who plunder us, and the lot of those who rob us.

Chapter 18

18:1Ah, land of whirring wings beyond the rivers of Cush,
18:2which sends ambassadors by sea in vessels of papyrus upon the waters. Go, swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth-skinned, to a people feared from near and far, a nation mighty and trampling, whose land the rivers divide.
18:3All you inhabitants of the world and dwellers on the earth: when a banner is raised on the mountains, look; and when a trumpet is blown, listen.
18:4For thus the LORD said to me: “I shall quietly look from My dwelling place, like clear heat in sunlight, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.
18:5For before the harvest, when the flowering is complete and the blossom becomes a ripening grape, He shall cut off the shoots with pruning hooks and remove and cut down the spreading branches.
18:6They shall be left together for the birds of prey of the mountains and for the beasts of the earth. The birds of prey shall summer upon them, and every beast of the earth shall winter upon them.”
18:7At that time a gift shall be brought to the LORD of Hosts from a nation tall and smooth-skinned, from a people feared from near and far, a nation mighty and trampling, whose land the rivers divide—to the place of the Name of the LORD of Hosts, Mount Zion.

Chapter 19

19:1The oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the LORD is riding upon a swift cloud and coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble at His presence, and the heart of Egypt melts within it.
19:2“And I shall stir up Egyptians against Egyptians; each shall fight against his brother and each against his neighbor, city against city and kingdom against kingdom.
19:3And the spirit of Egypt shall be emptied out within it, and I shall swallow up its counsel. Then they shall consult the idols, the charmers, the mediums, and the spiritists.
19:4And I shall deliver the Egyptians into the hand of a harsh master, and a fierce king shall rule over them”—an utterance of the Lord, the LORD of Hosts.
19:5The waters of the sea shall fail, and the river shall be parched and dry.
19:6The canals shall stink; the streams of Egypt shall dwindle and dry up; reed and rush shall wither.
19:7The plants along the Nile, at the mouth of the Nile, and every field sown beside the Nile shall wither, be driven away, and vanish.
19:8The fishermen shall lament, and all who cast hooks into the Nile shall mourn; those who spread nets upon the waters shall languish.
19:9Those who work combed flax shall be ashamed, and the weavers of white cloth shall despair.
19:10Its foundations shall be crushed, and all who work for wages shall be grieved in soul.
19:11The princes of Zoan are utter fools; the counsel of Pharaoh’s wisest counselors has become senseless. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am a son of the wise, a son of ancient kings”?
19:12Where, then, are your wise men? Let them tell you now, and let them know what the LORD of Hosts has purposed against Egypt.
19:13The princes of Zoan have become fools; the princes of Memphis are deceived; the chiefs of her tribes have led Egypt astray.
19:14The LORD has mingled within her a spirit of perversity, and they have led Egypt astray in all its work, as a drunkard staggers in his vomit.
19:15And there shall be nothing Egypt can do, whether head or tail, palm branch or reed.
19:16In that day Egypt shall be like women; it shall tremble and fear because of the waving of the hand of the LORD of Hosts, which He waves over it.
19:17And the land of Judah shall become a terror to Egypt; everyone to whom it is mentioned shall be afraid because of the purpose the LORD of Hosts has purposed against it.
19:18In that day five cities in the land of Egypt shall speak the language of Canaan and swear to the LORD of Hosts; one shall be called the City of Destruction.
19:19In that day there shall be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the LORD at its border.
19:20And it shall be a sign and a witness to the LORD of Hosts in the land of Egypt; for they shall cry to the LORD because of oppressors, and He shall send them a Savior and Defender, and He shall deliver them.
19:21And the LORD shall make Himself known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day. They shall offer sacrifice and grain offering, and they shall vow a vow to the LORD and fulfill it.
19:22And the LORD shall strike Egypt—striking and healing. They shall return to the LORD, and He shall be entreated by them and shall heal them.
19:23In that day there shall be a highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptians into Assyria; and Egypt shall worship with Assyria.
19:24In that day Israel shall be the third with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth,
19:25whom the LORD of Hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.”

Chapter 20

20:1In the year the commander-in-chief came to Ashdod, when Sargon king of Assyria sent him, and he fought against Ashdod and captured it,
20:2at that time the LORD spoke by Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go and remove the sackcloth from your waist and take your sandal from your foot.” And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
20:3Then the LORD said, “As My servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and wonder concerning Egypt and Cush,
20:4so the king of Assyria shall lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, young and old, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered—to the shame of Egypt.
20:5Then they shall be terrified and ashamed because of Cush their confidence and Egypt their glory.
20:6And the inhabitant of this coastland shall say in that day, ‘Behold what has become of our hope, to whom we fled for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria. How, then, shall we escape?’”

Chapter 21

21:1The oracle concerning the wilderness of the sea. As whirlwinds sweep through the south, it comes from the wilderness, from a terrifying land.
21:2A harsh vision has been declared to me: the traitor betrays, and the destroyer destroys. Go up, O Elam; besiege, O Media. I have brought all her groaning to an end.
21:3Therefore my loins are filled with anguish; pangs have seized me like the pangs of a woman in labor. I am bowed down by what I hear; I am dismayed by what I see.
21:4My heart reels; trembling overwhelms me. The twilight I longed for has become a terror to me.
21:5Set the table; post the watch. Eat, drink. Rise, O princes; oil the shield.
21:6For thus the Lord said to me: “Go, station a watchman; let him declare what he sees.”
21:7And when he sees a chariot, a pair of horsemen, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, let him listen closely, with great attention.
21:8Then he cried like a lion: “My lord, I stand continually on the watchtower by day, and I remain at my post through all the nights.
21:9And behold, here comes a chariot of men, a pair of horsemen.” And he answered and said, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the carved images of her gods He has shattered to the ground.”
21:10O my people, threshed upon my floor, what I have heard from the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, I have declared to you.
21:11The oracle concerning Dumah. One calls to me from Seir, “Watchman, what remains of the night? Watchman, what remains of the night?”
21:12The watchman says, “Morning comes, and also night. If you would inquire, inquire; return, come again.”
21:13The oracle concerning Arabia. In the thickets of Arabia you shall lodge, O caravans of Dedanites.
21:14Bring water to meet the thirsty, O inhabitants of the land of Tema; meet the fugitive with bread.
21:15For they have fled from drawn swords, from the bent bow, and from the press of battle.
21:16For thus the Lord said to me: “Within a year, as the years of a hired worker, all the glory of Kedar shall come to an end.
21:17And the remnant of the number of archers, the mighty men of the sons of Kedar, shall be few; for the LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken.”

Chapter 22

22:1The oracle concerning the Valley of Vision. What is the matter with you, that all of you have gone up to the rooftops,
22:2you who are full of tumult, a noisy city, an exultant city? Your slain were not slain by the sword, nor did they die in battle.
22:3All your rulers fled together; they were captured without the bow. All of you who were found were bound together, though they had fled far away.
22:4Therefore I said, “Look away from me; let me weep bitterly. Do not press to comfort me over the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
22:5For the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, has a day of panic, trampling, and confusion in the Valley of Vision—a breaking down of walls and a cry to the mountain.
22:6Elam bears the quiver, with chariots of men and horsemen, and Kir uncovers the shield.
22:7And your choicest valleys are full of chariots, and horsemen take their positions at the gate.
22:8And He removed the covering of Judah. In that day you looked to the weapons of the House of the Forest.
22:9You saw that the breaches in the City of David were many, and you gathered the waters of the lower pool.
22:10You counted the houses of Jerusalem, and you tore down houses to fortify the wall.
22:11You made a reservoir between the two walls for the waters of the old pool. But you did not look to Him who made it, nor did you regard Him who formed it long ago.
22:12And in that day the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and the wearing of sackcloth.
22:13But behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating meat and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
22:14And the LORD of Hosts revealed Himself in my hearing: “Surely this iniquity shall not be atoned for you until you die,” says the Lord, the LORD of Hosts.
22:15Thus says the Lord, the LORD of Hosts: “Go, come to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the house:
22:16What have you here, and whom have you here, that you have hewn out a tomb for yourself here, hewing your tomb on high and carving a dwelling for yourself in the rock?
22:17Behold, the LORD is about to hurl you away violently, O mighty man, and He shall seize you firmly.
22:18He shall roll you tightly like a ball and cast you into a broad land. There you shall die, and there your glorious chariots shall become the shame of your master’s house.
22:19I shall thrust you from your office, and you shall be pulled down from your station.
22:20And it shall come to pass in that day that I shall call My servant Eliakim son of Hilkiah.
22:21I shall clothe him with your tunic and fasten your sash around him, and I shall commit your authority into his hand. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
22:22And I shall place the key of the house of David upon his shoulder. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
22:23I shall fasten him as a peg in a secure place, and he shall become a throne of glory to his father’s house.
22:24And upon him they shall hang all the glory of his father’s house: the offspring and the descendants, every small vessel, from the bowls to all the jars.
22:25In that day—an utterance of the LORD of Hosts—the peg fastened in a secure place shall give way; it shall be cut down and fall, and the burden upon it shall be cut off, for the LORD has spoken.”

Chapter 23

23:1The oracle concerning Tyre. Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for Tyre is destroyed, without house or harbor. From the land of Kittim it has been revealed to them.
23:2Be silent, O inhabitants of the coastland. The merchants of Sidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.
23:3Upon many waters came the grain of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, and it became her revenue; she was the market of the nations.
23:4Be ashamed, O Sidon, for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, “I have not labored or given birth; I have not raised young men or brought up virgins.”
23:5When the report reaches Egypt, they shall writhe at the report concerning Tyre.
23:6Cross over to Tarshish; wail, O inhabitants of the coastland.
23:7Is this your exultant city, whose origin is from ancient days, whose feet carried her far away to sojourn?
23:8Who has purposed this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose merchants were princes and whose traders were the honored of the earth?
23:9The LORD of Hosts has purposed it, to defile the pride of all glory and bring into contempt all the honored of the earth.
23:10Overflow your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish; there is no restraint any longer.
23:11He has stretched out His hand over the sea; He has made kingdoms tremble. The LORD has commanded concerning Canaan, to destroy her strongholds.
23:12And He said, “You shall exult no more, O oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon. Arise, cross over to Kittim; even there you shall find no rest.”
23:13Behold the land of the Chaldeans. This people was not; Assyria founded it for desert creatures. They raised their siege towers; they stripped her palaces; they made her a ruin.
23:14Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is destroyed.
23:15And it shall come to pass in that day that Tyre shall be forgotten for seventy years, according to the days of one king. At the end of seventy years, it shall happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:
23:16“Take a harp; go around the city, O forgotten prostitute. Play skillfully; multiply your songs, that you may be remembered.”
23:17And it shall come to pass at the end of seventy years that the LORD shall visit Tyre. She shall return to her wages and prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the earth upon the face of the ground.
23:18Yet her merchandise and her wages shall be holy to the LORD. They shall not be stored or hoarded, for her merchandise shall be for those who dwell before the LORD, that they may eat to satisfaction and be clothed splendidly.

Chapter 24

24:1Behold, the LORD is emptying the earth and laying it waste; He distorts its surface and scatters its inhabitants.
24:2And it shall be: as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maidservant, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor.
24:3The earth shall be utterly emptied and utterly plundered, for the LORD has spoken this word.
24:4The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the exalted people of the earth languish.
24:5The earth is defiled under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, changed the statute, and broken the enduring covenant.
24:6Therefore a curse devours the earth, and those who dwell in it bear their guilt. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are consumed, and few men remain.
24:7The new wine mourns; the vine languishes; all the joyful in heart sigh.
24:8The joy of tambourines ceases; the noise of the exultant ends; the joy of the harp ceases.
24:9They do not drink wine with song; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
24:10The city of chaos is broken down; every house is shut, so that none may enter.
24:11There is an outcry in the streets for wine; all joy is darkened; the gladness of the land is banished.
24:12Desolation remains in the city, and the gate is battered into ruin.
24:13For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the peoples: as when an olive tree is beaten, as gleanings when the grape harvest is finished.
24:14They lift up their voice; they sing for joy. From the sea they cry aloud over the majesty of the LORD.
24:15Therefore glorify the LORD in the east, and the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the coastlands of the sea.
24:16From the ends of the earth we hear songs: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I say, “I waste away; I waste away. Woe is me!” The treacherous betray; with treachery the treacherous betray.
24:17Terror, pit, and snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth.
24:18And it shall come to pass that he who flees from the sound of terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.
24:19The earth is utterly broken; the earth is split apart; the earth is violently shaken.
24:20The earth staggers like a drunkard and sways like a hut. Its transgression lies heavy upon it; it falls and shall not rise again.
24:21And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall punish the host of heaven on high and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
24:22They shall be gathered together like prisoners in a pit; they shall be shut up in prison, and after many days they shall be punished.
24:23Then the moon shall be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of Hosts shall reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders shall be glory.

Chapter 25

25:1O LORD, You are my God. I shall exalt You; I shall praise Your Name, for You have done wonderful things—plans formed long ago, faithful and sure.
25:2For You have made a city a heap, a fortified city a ruin; the palace of foreigners is no longer a city; it shall never be rebuilt.
25:3Therefore a strong people shall honor You; the city of ruthless nations shall fear You.
25:4For You have been a stronghold for the poor, a stronghold for the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat; for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall.
25:5As heat in a dry land, You subdue the tumult of foreigners; as heat is subdued by the shade of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is brought low.
25:6And the LORD of Hosts shall prepare for all peoples on this mountain a feast of rich food, a feast of aged wine—rich food full of marrow, aged wine refined.
25:7And on this mountain He shall swallow up the covering that covers all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations.
25:8He shall swallow up death forever; and the Lord, the LORD, shall wipe away tears from all faces. He shall remove the reproach of His people from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.
25:9And it shall be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He saves us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him. Let us be glad and rejoice in His salvation.”
25:10For the hand of the LORD shall rest on this mountain, and Moab shall be trampled down in his place, as straw is trampled in the water of a manure pit.
25:11And he shall spread out his hands in its midst, as a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim; but He shall bring down his pride together with the skill of his hands.
25:12And the high fortress of your walls He shall bring down, lay low, and cast to the ground, to the dust.

Chapter 26

26:1In that day this song shall be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city; He appoints salvation as walls and rampart.
26:2Open the gates, that the righteous nation which keeps faith may enter.
26:3You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.
26:4Trust in the LORD forever, for in the Lord, the LORD, is the Rock of ages.
26:5For He has brought down those who dwell on high, the lofty city. He lays it low; He lays it low to the earth; He brings it down to the dust.
26:6The foot shall tread it down—the feet of the poor, the steps of the needy.
26:7The path of the righteous is level; O Upright One, You make level the way of the righteous.
26:8Indeed, in the path of Your judgments, O LORD, we have waited for You. The desire of our soul is for Your Name and for Your remembrance.
26:9My soul desires You in the night; indeed, my spirit within me seeks You earnestly. For when Your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
26:10Though the wicked is shown favor, he does not learn righteousness. In a land of uprightness he deals unjustly and does not see the majesty of the LORD.
26:11O LORD, Your hand is lifted up, but they do not see. Let them see Your zeal for the people and be ashamed; yes, let the fire for Your enemies consume them.
26:12O LORD, You shall establish peace for us, for You have also done all our works for us.
26:13O LORD our God, other lords besides You have ruled over us, but by You alone do we make mention of Your Name.
26:14They are dead; they shall not live. They are departed spirits; they shall not rise. Therefore You have visited and destroyed them, and made all memory of them perish.
26:15You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; You have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory; You have extended all the borders of the land.
26:16O LORD, in distress they sought You; they poured out a whispered prayer when Your discipline was upon them.
26:17As a pregnant woman draws near to birth, writhes, and cries out in her pangs, so were we before You, O LORD.
26:18We conceived; we writhed; we gave birth, as it were, to wind. We have not brought salvation to the earth, nor have the inhabitants of the world been brought forth.
26:19Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust, for your dew is as the dew of dawn, and the earth shall give birth to the departed spirits.
26:20Come, My people, enter your inner chambers and shut your doors behind you. Hide yourself for a little moment, until the indignation passes over.
26:21For behold, the LORD is coming out of His place to punish the inhabitant of the earth for his iniquity. The earth shall reveal her blood and shall no longer cover her slain.”

Chapter 27

27:1In that day the LORD shall punish with His sword—His fierce, great, and mighty sword—the sea serpent, the fleeing serpent, and the sea serpent, the twisting serpent; and He shall kill the sea dragon that is in the sea.
27:2In that day sing of her: “A vineyard of delight.
27:3I, the LORD, am its keeper; I water it every moment. Lest anyone harm it, I keep it night and day.
27:4I have no wrath. If only briers and thorns confronted Me in battle, I would march against them; I would burn them together.
27:5Or let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; let him make peace with Me.”
27:6In days to come Jacob shall take root; Israel shall blossom and bud, and they shall fill the face of the world with fruit.
27:7Has He struck him as He struck those who struck him? Or has he been slain as those slain by Him?
27:8In measured judgment, by sending her away, You contended with her; He swept her away with His fierce wind in the day of the east wind.
27:9Therefore by this the iniquity of Jacob shall be covered, and this shall be the full fruit of removing his sin: when he makes all the stones of the altar like chalkstones crushed to pieces, no sacred poles or incense altars shall stand.
27:10For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation forsaken and abandoned like the wilderness. There the calf grazes; there it lies down and consumes its branches.
27:11When its boughs are dry, they are broken off; women come and set them on fire. For this is not a people of understanding; therefore their Maker shall not have compassion on them, and their Former shall show them no favor.
27:12And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall beat out the grain from the channel of the Euphrates to the Brook of Egypt, and you shall be gathered one by one, O sons of Israel.
27:13And it shall come to pass in that day that a great trumpet shall be blown. Those who were perishing in the land of Assyria and those cast out in the land of Egypt shall come and bow themselves to the LORD on the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

Chapter 28

28:1Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley of those overcome by wine.
28:2Behold, the Lord has one who is mighty and strong. Like a storm of hail, a destroying tempest, like a flood of mighty overflowing waters, He casts it down to the earth with His hand.
28:3The proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden underfoot.
28:4And the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley, shall be like the first-ripe fig before summer: when one sees it, he swallows it as soon as it is in his hand.
28:5In that day the LORD of Hosts shall be a crown of beauty and a diadem of glory to the remnant of His people,
28:6and a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.
28:7But these also reel with wine and stagger with strong drink. Priest and prophet reel with strong drink; they are swallowed by wine; they stagger from strong drink. They reel in vision; they stumble in judgment.
28:8For all tables are full of filthy vomit; no place is clean.
28:9“Whom shall He teach knowledge, and whom shall He make understand the message? Those weaned from milk, those taken from the breasts?
28:10For rule upon rule, rule upon rule; line upon line, line upon line; a little here, a little there.”
28:11For by stammering lips and another tongue He shall speak to this people,
28:12to whom He said, “This is the rest; give rest to the weary; and this is the refreshing.” Yet they would not hear.
28:13Therefore the word of the LORD shall be to them: “Rule upon rule, rule upon rule; line upon line, line upon line; a little here, a little there,” that they may go and stumble backward, be broken, snared, and captured.
28:14Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.
28:15Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through, it shall not reach us, for we have made lies our refuge and hidden ourselves in falsehood.”
28:16Therefore thus says the Lord, the LORD: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a foundation stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation. He who believes shall not make haste.
28:17And I shall make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plummet. Hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters shall overflow the hiding place.
28:18Your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with the realm of the dead shall not stand. When the overflowing scourge passes through, you shall be trampled by it.
28:19As often as it passes through, it shall take you; for morning by morning it shall pass through, by day and by night. It shall be sheer terror to understand the message.
28:20For the bed is too short to stretch oneself upon, and the covering too narrow to wrap oneself in.
28:21For the LORD shall rise as at Mount Perazim; He shall rouse Himself as in the Valley of Gibeon, to do His work—strange is His work—and to perform His deed—unusual is His deed.”
28:22And now, do not be scoffers, lest your bonds be made stronger; for I have heard from the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, of a destruction decreed upon the whole land.
28:23Give ear and hear my voice; listen and hear my speech.
28:24Does the plowman plow all day to sow? Does he continually open and harrow his ground?
28:25When he has leveled its surface, does he not scatter black cumin, sow cumin, and put wheat in rows, barley in its appointed place, and spelt at its border?
28:26For his God instructs him in the right way; He teaches him.
28:27For black cumin is not threshed with a threshing sledge, nor is a cartwheel rolled over cumin; but black cumin is beaten out with a staff, and cumin with a rod.
28:28Grain for bread is crushed, but one does not thresh it endlessly. Though he drives his cartwheel and horses over it, he does not crush it.
28:29This also comes from the LORD of Hosts; He is wonderful in counsel and great in wisdom.

Chapter 29

29:1Woe to Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add year to year; let the festivals complete their cycle.
29:2Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be lamentation and mourning; and she shall be to Me like Ariel.
29:3I will encamp against you all around; I will lay siege against you with a mound, and raise siegeworks against you.
29:4Then you shall be brought low; from the earth you shall speak, and from the dust your speech shall be bowed down. Your voice shall be like that of a medium from the earth, and your speech shall whisper from the dust.
29:5But the multitude of your foes shall be like fine dust, and the multitude of the ruthless like passing chaff. And it shall happen suddenly, in an instant.
29:6You shall be visited by the LORD of Hosts with thunder, earthquake, and great noise, with whirlwind and storm, and the flame of devouring fire.
29:7And the multitude of all the nations warring against Ariel—all who war against her and her stronghold, and those who distress her—shall be like a dream, a vision of the night.
29:8It shall be as when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he is eating; but he awakens, and his appetite is empty; or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he is drinking; but he awakens, and behold, he is faint, and his thirst remains. So shall the multitude of all the nations be who war against Mount Zion.
29:9Be stunned and amazed; blind yourselves and be blind. Be drunk, but not with wine; stagger, but not with strong drink.
29:10For the LORD has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep; He has closed your eyes—the prophets—and covered your heads—the seers.
29:11And the whole vision has become to you like the words of a sealed scroll. When men give it to one who knows how to read, saying, “Please read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”
29:12And when the scroll is given to one who does not know how to read, saying, “Please read this,” he says, “I do not know how to read.”
29:13Then the Lord said: “Because this people draws near with its mouth and honors Me with its lips, while its heart is far from Me, and its fear of Me is a commandment taught by men,
29:14therefore, behold, I will again do a wonder among this people—wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of its wise shall perish, and the understanding of its discerning shall be hidden.”
29:15Woe to those who go deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, whose works are in darkness, and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”
29:16You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, “He did not make me,” or the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?
29:17Is it not yet a very little while until Lebanon is turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is regarded as a forest?
29:18In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a scroll, and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.
29:19The humble shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
29:20For the ruthless shall come to an end, the scoffer shall cease, and all who watch for evil shall be cut off—
29:21those who condemn a man by a word, lay a snare for one who reproves in the gate, and deny justice to the righteous with an empty plea.
29:22Therefore thus says the LORD, who ransomed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: “Jacob shall no longer be ashamed, nor shall his face grow pale.
29:23For when he sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst, they shall sanctify My Name; they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and stand in awe of the God of Israel.
29:24Those who err in spirit shall come to understanding, and those who murmur shall learn instruction.”

Chapter 30

30:1“Woe to rebellious children,” an utterance of the LORD, “who make plans, but not from Me, and form an alliance, but not by My Spirit, adding sin to sin;
30:2who set out to go down to Egypt without asking counsel from My mouth, to seek protection in Pharaoh’s strength and refuge in the shadow of Egypt.
30:3But Pharaoh’s strength shall become your shame, and refuge in the shadow of Egypt your disgrace.
30:4For his princes are at Zoan, and his messengers have reached Hanes.
30:5All shall be ashamed because of a people who cannot profit them, who bring neither help nor benefit, but only shame and reproach.”
30:6The oracle concerning the beasts of the Negev: Through a land of distress and anguish, of lioness and lion, of viper and flying fiery serpent, they carry their wealth on the shoulders of donkeys and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people who cannot profit them.
30:7Egypt’s help is empty and vain; therefore I have called her, “Egypt who sits still.”
30:8Now go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a scroll, that it may be for a time to come, as a witness forever and ever.
30:9For this is a rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the Instruction of the LORD;
30:10who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right. Speak to us smooth things; prophesy illusions.
30:11Leave the way; turn aside from the path; remove the Holy One of Israel from before us.”
30:12Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel: “Because you reject this word, trust in oppression and perversity, and rely on them,
30:13therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach about to fall, bulging out in a high wall, whose collapse comes suddenly, in an instant.
30:14He shall break it like a potter’s jar, shattered without mercy, so that among its fragments no shard is found large enough to take fire from the hearth or draw water from a cistern.”
30:15For thus says the Lord, the LORD, the Holy One of Israel: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling.
30:16You said, “No, for we shall flee on horses”; therefore you shall flee. And, “We shall ride upon swift horses”; therefore your pursuers shall be swift.
30:17One thousand shall flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you shall all flee, until you are left like a pole on the top of a mountain, like a signal on a hill.
30:18Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you, and therefore He rises to show you mercy; for the LORD is a God of justice. O the blessedness of all who wait for Him.
30:19For a people shall dwell in Zion, in Jerusalem. You shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will answer you.
30:20Though the Lord gives you bread of adversity and water of affliction, your teachers shall no longer hide themselves, but your eyes shall see your teachers.
30:21And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.
30:22Then you shall defile the silver plating of your carved images and the gold overlay of your cast-metal images. You shall scatter them as an unclean thing and say to them, “Away with you!”
30:23Then He shall give rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and bread from the produce of the ground; it shall be rich and plentiful. In that day your livestock shall graze in broad pastures.
30:24The oxen and young donkeys that work the ground shall eat seasoned fodder, winnowed with shovel and fork.
30:25And on every high mountain and every lofty hill there shall be streams and channels of water, in the day of great slaughter, when the towers fall.
30:26The light of the moon shall be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, like the light of seven days, in the day when the LORD binds up the breach of His people and heals the wound of His stroke.
30:27Behold, the Name of the LORD comes from afar, burning with His anger, and His burden is heavy. His lips are full of indignation, and His tongue is like a devouring fire.
30:28His breath is like an overflowing stream that reaches to the neck, to sift the nations with a sieve of destruction; and a bridle that leads astray shall be on the jaws of the peoples.
30:29You shall have a song as in the night when a holy festival is kept, and gladness of heart as when one goes with a flute to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel.
30:30And the LORD shall cause His majestic voice to be heard and show the descent of His arm, with fierce anger and the flame of a devouring fire, with cloudburst, storm, and hailstones.
30:31For at the voice of the LORD Assyria shall be shattered; He shall strike it with a rod.
30:32And every stroke of the appointed staff that the LORD lays upon it shall be to the sound of tambourines and lyres; and with battles of brandishing He shall fight against them.
30:33For Topheth has long been prepared; indeed, it has been made ready for the king. He has made it deep and wide. Its pyre is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.

Chapter 31

31:1Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses and trust in chariots because they are many, and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek the LORD.
31:2Yet He also is wise and brings disaster; He does not withdraw His words. He shall rise against the house of evildoers and against the help of those who work iniquity.
31:3The Egyptians are men, and not God; their horses are flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD stretches out His hand, the helper shall stumble, and the one helped shall fall; together they shall all perish.
31:4For thus says the LORD to me: “As a lion or a young lion growls over its prey, and though a band of shepherds is called against it, it is not terrified by their voices or daunted by their noise, so the LORD of Hosts shall come down to fight upon Mount Zion and upon its hill.
31:5Like birds hovering, so the LORD of Hosts shall protect Jerusalem; He shall protect and deliver it; He shall pass over and rescue it.”
31:6Return to Him from whom the children of Israel have so deeply revolted.
31:7For in that day each of you shall cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which your hands have sinfully made for you.
31:8“Assyria shall fall by a sword not wielded by man; a sword not of mortals shall devour it. It shall flee from the sword, and its young men shall be put to forced labor.
31:9Its rock shall pass away in terror, and its princes shall panic at the banner”—an utterance of the LORD, whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

Chapter 32

32:1Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule with justice.
32:2Each shall be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.
32:3Then the eyes of those who see shall not be closed, and the ears of those who hear shall listen.
32:4The heart of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of stammerers shall hasten to speak clearly.
32:5The fool shall no longer be called noble, nor the scoundrel said to be honorable.
32:6For a fool speaks folly, and his heart works iniquity, practicing godlessness and speaking error against the LORD, leaving the hungry empty and depriving the thirsty of drink.
32:7The tools of the scoundrel are evil; he devises wicked schemes to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks what is right.
32:8But the noble devises noble things, and by noble things he shall stand.
32:9Rise, you women at ease; hear my voice. You complacent daughters, give ear to my speech.
32:10In little more than a year you shall tremble, you complacent ones; for the grape harvest shall fail, and the gathering shall not come.
32:11Tremble, you women at ease; be troubled, you complacent ones. Strip yourselves and make yourselves bare; gird sackcloth around your waists.
32:12Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine,
32:13for the ground of my people, where thorn and brier shall spring up, and for all the houses of joy in the jubilant city.
32:14For the palace shall be abandoned, the populous city deserted; hill and watchtower shall become caves forever, a delight of wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks,
32:15until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is regarded as a forest.
32:16Then justice shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness shall remain in the fruitful field.
32:17The work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.
32:18My people shall dwell in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.
32:19But hail shall fall when the forest falls, and the city shall be utterly brought low.
32:20O the blessedness of you who sow beside all waters, who send out the feet of the ox and the donkey.

Chapter 33

33:1Woe to you who destroy, though you have not been destroyed, and to you who deal treacherously, though none has dealt treacherously with you! When you cease destroying, you shall be destroyed; when you finish dealing treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with you.
33:2O LORD, be gracious to us; we wait for You. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in time of distress.
33:3At the sound of tumult, peoples flee; when You rise, nations scatter.
33:4Your spoil shall be gathered as the devouring locust gathers; as locusts rush, so men shall rush upon it.
33:5The LORD is exalted, for He dwells on high; He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
33:6He shall be the stability of your times, an abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is his treasure.
33:7Behold, their valiant ones cry outside; the envoys of peace weep bitterly.
33:8The highways lie desolate; the traveler has ceased. He has broken the covenant, despised the cities, and regarded no man.
33:9The land mourns and languishes; Lebanon is ashamed and withers; Sharon has become like a wilderness, and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.
33:10“Now I will arise,” says the LORD; “now I will be exalted; now I will be lifted up.
33:11You conceive chaff and give birth to stubble; your own breath is a fire that shall devour you.
33:12The peoples shall be like the burning of lime, like thorns cut down and burned in the fire.
33:13Hear, you who are far away, what I have done; and you who are near, acknowledge My might.”
33:14Sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling has seized the godless: “Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?”
33:15He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who rejects the gain of extortion, shakes his hands free from taking a bribe, stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from looking upon evil—
33:16he shall dwell on the heights; a fortress of rocks shall be his stronghold. His bread shall be given him; his water shall be sure.
33:17Your eyes shall see the king in his beauty; they shall behold a land stretching far away.
33:18Your heart shall meditate on the terror: “Where is the one who counted? Where is the one who weighed the tribute? Where is the one who counted the towers?”
33:19You shall no longer see the fierce people, a people of speech too obscure to understand, of a stammering tongue you cannot comprehend.
33:20Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts. Your eyes shall see Jerusalem, a quiet habitation, a tent that shall not be moved; its stakes shall never be pulled up, nor shall any of its cords be broken.
33:21But there the majestic LORD shall be for us, a place of broad rivers and streams, where no galley with oars shall go and no mighty ship shall pass.
33:22For the LORD is our Judge; the LORD is our Ruler; the LORD is our King—He shall save us.
33:23Your ropes hang loose; they cannot hold the base of their mast or spread the sail. Then abundant spoil shall be divided; even the lame shall take the plunder.
33:24And no inhabitant shall say, “I am sick”; the people who dwell there shall be forgiven their iniquity.

Chapter 34

34:1Draw near, you nations, to hear; you peoples, give attention. Let the earth and all its fullness hear, the world and all that springs from it.
34:2For the LORD is indignant against all the nations and furious against all their armies. He has devoted them to destruction; He has given them over to slaughter.
34:3Their slain shall be cast out, and the stench of their corpses shall rise; the mountains shall flow with their blood.
34:4All the host of the heavens shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll. All their host shall fall as a leaf falls from the vine, as a withered fig falls from the fig tree.
34:5For My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; behold, it shall descend upon Edom, upon the people I have devoted to destruction, for judgment.
34:6The sword of the LORD is filled with blood and made fat with fat—with the blood of lambs and male goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
34:7Wild oxen shall fall with them, young bulls with mighty bulls. Their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made rich with fat.
34:8For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
34:9Edom’s streams shall be turned into pitch, her dust into sulfur, and her land shall become burning pitch.
34:10Night and day it shall not be quenched; its smoke shall rise forever. From generation to generation it shall lie desolate; forever and ever no one shall pass through it.
34:11The pelican and the porcupine shall possess it; the owl and the raven shall dwell in it. He shall stretch over it the line of desolation and the plumb stones of emptiness.
34:12Her nobles—there shall be no one there to proclaim a kingdom, and all her princes shall be nothing.
34:13Thorns shall grow over her palaces, nettles and thistles in her fortresses. She shall become a haunt of jackals, an abode for ostriches.
34:14Wildcats shall meet hyenas, and the wild goat shall call to its companion; there the night creature shall settle and find a resting place for herself.
34:15There the owl shall make her nest, lay her eggs, hatch them, and gather her young under her shadow. There also the vultures shall gather, each with its companion.
34:16Seek from the scroll of the LORD and read: not one of these shall be missing; none shall lack its companion. For His mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them.
34:17He has cast the lot for them, and His hand has apportioned it to them by measuring line. They shall possess it forever; from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Chapter 35

35:1The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the rose.
35:2It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, even with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God.
35:3Strengthen the feeble hands and make firm the weak knees.
35:4Say to those of anxious heart, “Be strong; do not fear. Behold, your God! Vengeance comes, the recompense of God. He Himself shall come and save you.”
35:5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
35:6Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute shall sing; for waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.
35:7The burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water. In the haunt where jackals lay, grass shall become reeds and rushes.
35:8A highway shall be there, and a way; it shall be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for those who walk the way; even fools shall not go astray.
35:9No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come upon it; none shall be found there. But the redeemed shall walk there.
35:10And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Chapter 36

36:1And in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and seized them.
36:2Then the king of Assyria sent the chief cupbearer from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.
36:3Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the house, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, went out to him.
36:4And the chief cupbearer said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: What is this confidence in which you trust?
36:5You say, ‘I have counsel and strength for war,’ but these are mere words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
36:6Behold, you trust in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans upon it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
36:7And if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You shall bow yourselves before this altar’?
36:8Now make a wager with my lord the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able to provide riders for them.
36:9How then can you repel a single captain among the least of my lord’s servants, while you trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
36:10Have I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
36:11Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the chief cupbearer, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
36:12But the chief cupbearer said, “Has my lord sent me to speak these words only to your lord and to you? Has he not sent me also to the men sitting on the wall, who with you will eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”
36:13Then the chief cupbearer stood and called out with a loud voice in the language of Judah, saying, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
36:14Thus says the king: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he is not able to deliver you.
36:15And do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
36:16Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you shall eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and each shall drink water from his own well,
36:17until I come and take you to a land like your own land—a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
36:18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’ Has any god of the nations delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
36:19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
36:20Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered his land from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”
36:21But they kept silent and did not answer him a word, for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.”
36:22Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the house, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their garments torn and told him the words of the chief cupbearer.

Chapter 37

37:1And when King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his garments, covered himself with sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.
37:2And he sent Eliakim, who was over the house, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, all covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, son of Amoz.
37:3And they said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to birth, but there is no strength to bring them forth.
37:4Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of the chief cupbearer, whom his lord the king of Assyria has sent to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up prayer for the remnant that remains.”
37:5So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
37:6And Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your lord, Thus says the LORD: Do not be afraid because of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have reviled Me.
37:7Behold, I am putting a spirit in him, and he will hear a report and return to his land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”
37:8Then the chief cupbearer returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that the king had departed from Lachish.
37:9And the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, “He has come out to fight against you.” So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
37:10“Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you by saying, ‘Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
37:11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered?
37:12Did the gods of the nations deliver those whom my fathers destroyed—Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the sons of Eden who were in Telassar?
37:13Where are the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?”
37:14Then Hezekiah took the letters from the hand of the messengers and read them. And he went up to the house of the LORD and spread them before the LORD.
37:15And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD, saying,
37:16“O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, who sits enthroned above the winged guardians, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made the heavens and the earth.
37:17Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see. Hear all the words that Sennacherib has sent to reproach the living God.
37:18Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands,
37:19and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of human hands—wood and stone. Therefore they destroyed them.
37:20And now, O LORD our God, please save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone are the LORD.”
37:21Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent word to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the LORD, God of Israel: Because you have prayed to Me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria,
37:22this is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion despises you and mocks you; behind you the daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head.
37:23Whom have you reproached and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel.
37:24By your servants you have reproached the Lord and said, ‘With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the farthest reaches of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, its choicest cypresses. I have entered its farthest recess, its fruitful forest.
37:25I have dug wells and drunk water; with the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.’
37:26Have you not heard? Long ago I did it; from days of old I formed it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should turn fortified cities into heaps of ruins.
37:27Their inhabitants were powerless; they were dismayed and put to shame. They became like grass of the field and tender vegetation, like grass on the rooftops, scorched before it grows up.
37:28But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your rage against Me.
37:29Because your rage against Me and your insolence have come up into My ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way you came.
37:30And this shall be the sign to you: This year you shall eat aftergrowth, and in the second year what springs from it; but in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.
37:31And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.
37:32For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and survivors from Mount Zion. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts shall do this.
37:33Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city, shoot an arrow there, come before it with shield, or raise a siege ramp against it.
37:34By the way that he came, by that same way he shall return; and into this city he shall not come—an utterance of the LORD.
37:35For I will defend this city to save it, for My own sake and for the sake of My servant David.”
37:36Then an angel of the LORD went out and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people rose early in the morning, behold, all of them were dead bodies.
37:37Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went away, and returned home; and he dwelt in Nineveh.
37:38And as he was bowing himself in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him down with the sword and escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar-Haddon his son reigned in his place.

Chapter 38

38:1In those days Hezekiah became sick and was near death. And Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet came to him and said, “Thus says the LORD: Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.”
38:2Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,
38:3saying, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You in faithfulness and with a heart wholly devoted to You, and have done what is good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
38:4Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying,
38:5“Go and say to Hezekiah, Thus says the LORD, God of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your days.
38:6I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city.
38:7And this shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do the word He has spoken:
38:8Behold, I will cause the shadow on the steps of Ahaz, which has gone down with the sun, to go back ten steps.” So the sun’s shadow went back ten steps on the steps by which it had gone down.
38:9A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, after he had been sick and recovered from his sickness:
38:10“I said, In the middle of my days I must go to the gates of the realm of the dead; I am deprived of the remainder of my years.
38:11I said, I shall not see the LORD—the LORD—in the land of the living; I shall no longer look upon man among the inhabitants of the world.
38:12My dwelling is pulled up and removed from me like a shepherd’s tent. Like a weaver I have rolled up my life; He cuts me off from the loom. From day to night You bring me to an end.
38:13I quieted myself until morning; like a lion He breaks all my bones. From day to night You bring me to an end.
38:14Like a swallow or a crane I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak looking upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my security.
38:15What shall I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done it. I shall walk slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul.
38:16O Lord, by these things men live, and in all of them is the life of my spirit. Restore me to health and make me live.
38:17Behold, for my peace I had great bitterness; but in love You kept my life from the pit of destruction, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
38:18For the realm of the dead does not confess You; death does not praise You; those who go down to the pit do not hope for Your faithfulness.
38:19The living, the living—he confesses You, as I do this day. A father makes known Your faithfulness to his children.
38:20The LORD was ready to save me; therefore we shall play my songs on stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the house of the LORD.”
38:21Then Isaiah said, “Let them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, that he may recover.”
38:22Then Hezekiah said, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the LORD?”

Chapter 39

39:1At that time Merodach-Baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick and had recovered.
39:2Then Hezekiah rejoiced over them and showed them his treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, his entire armory, and all that was found in his treasuries. There was nothing in his house or in all his dominion that Hezekiah did not show them.
39:3Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and said to him, “What did these men say, and from where did they come to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They came to me from a distant land—from Babylon.”
39:4And he said, “What did they see in your house?” And Hezekiah said, “They saw everything in my house; there was nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
39:5Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the LORD of Hosts:
39:6Behold, days are coming when all that is in your house, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left, says the LORD.
39:7And some of your sons who come from you, whom you father, shall be taken away; and they shall become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”
39:8Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” And he said, “For there shall be peace and stability in my days.”

Chapter 40

40:1“Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.
40:2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.
40:3A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
40:4Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rugged places a plain.
40:5And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
40:6A voice says, “Cry out.” And he said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like a flower of the field.
40:7The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people are grass.
40:8The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.
40:9Go up on a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news. Lift it up; do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold, your God!”
40:10Behold, the Lord, the LORD, comes with strength, and His arm rules for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.
40:11He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arm and carries them in His bosom; He gently leads those that nurse.
40:12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?
40:13Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or as His counselor instructed Him?
40:14With whom did He consult, and who gave Him understanding? Who taught Him the path of justice, taught Him knowledge, and made known to Him the way of understanding?
40:15Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket and are counted as dust on the scales; behold, He weighs the coastlands like fine dust.
40:16Lebanon is not enough for fuel, nor are its beasts enough for a burnt offering.
40:17All the nations are as nothing before Him; they are counted by Him as less than nothing and emptiness.
40:18To whom, then, will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare with Him?
40:19A craftsman casts an idol, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts silver chains for it.
40:20He who is too poor for such an offering chooses wood that will not rot; he seeks a skillful craftsman to set up an idol that will not move.
40:21Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
40:22He sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a veil and spreads them like a tent to dwell in.
40:23He brings princes to nothing; He makes the judges of the earth as emptiness.
40:24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely are they sown, scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, when He blows upon them and they wither, and a whirlwind carries them away like stubble.
40:25“To whom, then, will you liken Me, that I should be equal to him?” says the Holy One.
40:26Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He brings out their host by number and calls them all by name. Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, not one is missing.
40:27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my justice is overlooked by my God”?
40:28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not grow weary or faint. His understanding cannot be searched out.
40:29He gives strength to the weary, and to him who has no might He increases power.
40:30Even youths grow weary and faint, and young men utterly stumble;
40:31but those who wait for the LORD renew their strength. They mount up with wings like eagles; they run and do not grow weary; they walk and do not faint.

Chapter 41

41:1Keep silence before Me, O coastlands, and let the peoples renew their strength. Let them come near; then let them speak. Let us draw near together for judgment.
41:2Who stirred up one from the east, calling him in righteousness to His feet? He gives nations before him and makes him rule over kings. He gives them like dust to his sword, like driven stubble to his bow.
41:3He pursues them and passes on safely, by a path his feet had not traveled.
41:4Who has worked and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last I am He.
41:5The coastlands have seen and are afraid; the ends of the earth tremble. They draw near and come.
41:6Each helps his neighbor and says to his brother, “Be strong.”
41:7The craftsman strengthens the goldsmith; he who smooths with the hammer strengthens him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, “It is good.” Then he fastens it with nails so that it cannot move.
41:8But you, O Israel, My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham My friend,
41:9you whom I took from the ends of the earth and called from its remotest parts, and said to you, “You are My servant; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.”
41:10Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I strengthen you; indeed, I help you; indeed, I uphold you with My righteous right hand.
41:11Behold, all who are incensed against you shall be ashamed and humiliated; those who contend with you shall be as nothing and shall perish.
41:12You shall seek them but shall not find them—those who quarrel with you. Those who war against you shall be as nothing, as a thing of no account.
41:13For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; I am the One who says to you, “Do not fear; I will help you.”
41:14Do not fear, O worm Jacob, you men of Israel. I will help you—an utterance of the LORD—and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
41:15Behold, I make you a new, sharp threshing sledge with teeth. You shall thresh the mountains and crush them, and make the hills like chaff.
41:16You shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them. But you shall rejoice in the LORD; you shall glory in the Holy One of Israel.
41:17The poor and needy seek water, but there is none; their tongue is parched with thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
41:18I will open rivers on the bare heights and springs in the midst of valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water and the dry land springs of water.
41:19I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive tree. I will set in the desert the juniper, the fir, and the cypress together,
41:20so that they may see and know, consider and understand together, that the hand of the LORD has done this, and the Holy One of Israel has created it.
41:21Present your case, says the LORD; bring forward your arguments, says the King of Jacob.
41:22Let them bring them forward and declare to us what is to happen. Declare the former things—what they are—so that we may consider them and know their outcome; or cause us to hear the things to come.
41:23Declare the things that are to come afterward, so that we may know that you are gods. Indeed, do good or do evil, that we may be astonished and see together.
41:24Behold, you are of nothing, and your work is of nothing; whoever chooses you is detestable.
41:25I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes; from the rising of the sun he shall call upon My Name. He shall come upon rulers as upon mortar, as a potter treads clay.
41:26Who declared it from the beginning, that we might know, or from former times, that we might say, “He is right”? Indeed, there was none who declared it, none who proclaimed it, none who heard your words.
41:27Formerly I said to Zion, “Behold, here they are,” and to Jerusalem I give a herald of good news.
41:28But when I look, there is no one; among them there is no counselor who, when I ask, can answer a word.
41:29Behold, all of them are emptiness; their works are nothing; their cast-metal images are wind and void.

Chapter 42

42:1Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My Chosen One, in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He shall bring forth justice to the nations.
42:2He shall not cry out or raise His voice, nor cause it to be heard in the street.
42:3A bruised reed He shall not break, and a dimly burning wick He shall not quench; He shall faithfully bring forth justice.
42:4He shall not grow faint or be crushed until He establishes justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for His instruction.
42:5Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what springs from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it:
42:6“I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness. I will take hold of Your hand and keep You; I will give You as a covenant for the people, as a light for the nations,
42:7to open blind eyes, to bring prisoners out from the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness out from the prison.
42:8I am the LORD; that is My Name. I will not give My glory to another, nor My praise to carved images.
42:9Behold, the former things have come to pass, and I declare new things; before they spring forth, I cause you to hear of them.”
42:10Sing to the LORD a new song, His praise from the end of the earth—you who go down to the sea and all that fills it, the coastlands and their inhabitants.
42:11Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits. Let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the tops of the mountains.
42:12Let them give glory to the LORD and declare His praise in the coastlands.
42:13The LORD goes forth like a mighty man; He stirs up zeal like a man of war. He cries out; indeed, He raises a war cry. He shows Himself mighty against His enemies.
42:14“I have long kept silent; I have been still and restrained Myself. Now I cry out like a woman in labor; I gasp and pant together.
42:15I will lay waste mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn rivers into dry land and dry up the pools.
42:16I will lead the blind in a way they have not known; I will guide them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them and rough places level. These are the things I will do for them, and I will not forsake them.
42:17They shall be turned back and utterly ashamed—those who trust in a carved image, who say to a cast-metal image, ‘You are our gods.’”
42:18Hear, you deaf; look, you blind, that you may see.
42:19Who is blind but My servant, or deaf as My messenger whom I send? Who is blind as he who is at peace with Me, or blind as the servant of the LORD?
42:20You have seen many things, but you do not observe; your ears are open, but you do not hear.
42:21The LORD was pleased, for His righteousness’ sake, to magnify His instruction and make it glorious.
42:22But this is a people plundered and looted, all of them trapped in holes or hidden in prisons. They have become plunder, with no one to rescue them; spoil, with no one saying, “Restore them.”
42:23Who among you will give ear to this? Who will attend and hear for the time to come?
42:24Who gave Jacob as spoil and Israel to plunderers? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned? For they would not walk in His ways, and they did not obey His instruction.
42:25So He poured upon him the fury of His anger and the violence of battle. It set him ablaze all around, yet he did not understand; it burned him, yet he did not take it to heart.

Chapter 43

43:1But now, thus says the LORD, your Creator, O Jacob, and your Former, O Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name—you are Mine.
43:2When you pass through the waters, I am with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you. When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
43:3For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place.
43:4Because you are precious in My sight, honored, and I love you, I give men in your place and peoples in place of your life.
43:5Do not fear, for I am with you. I will bring your offspring from the east and gather you from the west.
43:6I will say to the north, ‘Give them up,’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the end of the earth—
43:7everyone who is called by My Name, whom I created for My glory, whom I formed, indeed, whom I made.”
43:8Bring out the blind people who have eyes, and the deaf who have ears.
43:9Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the peoples assemble. Who among them can declare this and cause us to hear the former things? Let them bring their witnesses and be proved right; let them hear and say, “It is true.”
43:10“You are My witnesses”—an utterance of the LORD—“and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me there shall be none.
43:11I, I am the LORD, and besides Me there is no savior.
43:12I declared, and saved, and proclaimed, and there was no foreign god among you. You are My witnesses”—an utterance of the LORD—“and I am God.
43:13Even from before the day was, I am He; and there is no one who can deliver from My hand. I work, and who can turn it back?”
43:14Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and I will bring them all down as fugitives, even the Chaldeans, in the ships of their rejoicing.
43:15I am the LORD, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.”
43:16Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea and a path in the mighty waters,
43:17who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior together: “They lie down; they cannot rise. They are extinguished, quenched like a wick.
43:18Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old.
43:19Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth. Do you not perceive it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
43:20The beasts of the field shall honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give water in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen,
43:21the people whom I formed for Myself, that they may declare My praise.
43:22Yet you have not called upon Me, O Jacob; rather, you have grown weary of Me, O Israel.
43:23You have not brought Me sheep for your burnt offerings, nor honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with grain offerings, nor wearied you with frankincense.
43:24You have not bought Me sweet cane with money, nor filled Me with the fat of your sacrifices. Instead, you have burdened Me with your sins; you have wearied Me with your iniquities.
43:25I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
43:26Remind Me; let us argue together. State your case, that you may be justified.
43:27Your first father sinned, and your spokesmen transgressed against Me.
43:28Therefore I profaned the rulers of the sanctuary; I devoted Jacob to destruction and Israel to reviling.”

Chapter 44

44:1But now hear, O Jacob My servant, and Israel, whom I have chosen—
44:2thus says the LORD, your Maker and your Former from the womb, who helps you: “Do not fear, My servant Jacob, and Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
44:3For I will pour water upon the thirsty land and streams upon the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit upon your offspring and My blessing upon your descendants.
44:4They shall spring up among the grass like willows beside streams of water.
44:5One shall say, ‘I am the LORD’s’; another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; another shall write on his hand, ‘For the LORD,’ and shall name himself by the name of Israel.”
44:6Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of Hosts: “I am the first, and I am the last; besides Me there is no God.
44:7Who is like Me? Let him proclaim it; let him declare and set it in order before Me, since I established the ancient people. Let them declare the things that are coming and what shall come.
44:8Do not tremble, and do not fear. Have I not caused you to hear from long ago and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? There is no Rock; I know not one.”
44:9All who form carved images are emptiness, and their treasured idols are of no profit. Their own witnesses see nothing and know nothing, so that they shall be ashamed.
44:10Who forms a god or casts a cast-metal image that is of no profit?
44:11Behold, all his companions shall be ashamed, and the craftsmen are only men. Let them all gather and stand; they shall fear and be ashamed together.
44:12The ironsmith takes a cutting tool and works it over the coals. He fashions the image with hammers and works it with his strong arm. He grows hungry and has no strength; he drinks no water and becomes faint.
44:13The woodworker stretches out a line and marks it with a stylus. He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. He makes it in the form of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house.
44:14He cuts down cedars for himself, or takes a cypress or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar, and the rain makes it grow.
44:15Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes some of it and warms himself; indeed, he kindles a fire and bakes bread. He also makes a god and bows down; he makes it a carved image and falls before it.
44:16Half of it he burns in the fire. Over that half he eats meat; he roasts a roast and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, “Aha, I am warm; I have seen the fire.”
44:17And the rest of it he makes into a god, his carved image. He falls before it and worships; he prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god.”
44:18They do not know, nor do they understand, for He has shut their eyes so that they cannot see, and their hearts so that they cannot understand.
44:19No one considers in his heart, nor has knowledge or understanding to say, “Half of it I burned in the fire; indeed, I also baked bread over its coals. I roasted meat and ate. Shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”
44:20He feeds on ashes; a deceived heart has led him astray. He cannot save himself or say, “Is there not a lie in my right hand?”
44:21“Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are My servant. I formed you; you are My servant. O Israel, you shall not be forgotten by Me.
44:22I have blotted out your transgressions like a thick cloud, and your sins like a mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.”
44:23Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done it. Shout, O depths of the earth. Break forth into singing, O mountains, O forest and every tree in it. For the LORD has redeemed Jacob and glorified Himself in Israel.
44:24Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the LORD, who makes all things, who stretches out the heavens alone, who spreads out the earth—who was with Me?
44:25I frustrate the signs of liars and make diviners fools; I turn the wise backward and make their knowledge foolish.
44:26I confirm the word of My servant and fulfill the counsel of My messengers; I say of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited,’ and of the cities of Judah, ‘They shall be built,’ and I will raise up her ruins.
44:27I say to the deep, ‘Be dry,’ and I will dry up your rivers.
44:28I say of Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd, and he shall fulfill all My pleasure’; saying of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be built,’ and of the temple, ‘Your foundation shall be laid.’”

Chapter 45

45:1Thus says the LORD to His Anointed One, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and loosen the belts of kings, to open doors before him so that gates shall not be shut:
45:2“I will go before you and level the rugged places. I will shatter doors of bronze and cut through bars of iron.
45:3I will give you treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.
45:4For the sake of My servant Jacob and Israel My chosen, I call you by your name; I give you a title of honor, though you have not known Me.
45:5I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God. I gird you, though you have not known Me,
45:6so that they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting that there is none besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other.
45:7I form light and create darkness; I make peace and create calamity. I, the LORD, do all these things.
45:8Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the clouds pour down righteousness. Let the earth open; let salvation spring up, and let righteousness grow with it. I, the LORD, have created it.
45:9Woe to him who strives with his Former—a potsherd among the potsherds of the ground. Shall the clay say to its Former, ‘What are you making?’ or your work say, ‘He has no hands’?
45:10Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you begetting?’ or to a woman, ‘What are you bringing forth?’”
45:11Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel and his Former: “Would you question Me about things to come concerning My sons, or command Me concerning the work of My hands?
45:12I made the earth and created man upon it. My own hands stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.
45:13I have stirred him up in righteousness, and I will make all his ways straight. He shall build My city and release My exiles, not for price or reward,” says the LORD of Hosts.
45:14Thus says the LORD: “The labor of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush, and the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over to you and be yours. They shall follow you; they shall come over in chains and bow down to you. They shall plead with you, saying, ‘Surely God is with you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’”
45:15Truly You are a God who hides Himself, O God of Israel, the Savior.
45:16They shall all be ashamed and humiliated; the makers of idols shall go together in disgrace.
45:17But Israel is saved by the LORD with an everlasting salvation. You shall not be ashamed or humiliated to all eternity.
45:18For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens—He is God—who formed the earth and made it; He established it. He did not create it empty; He formed it to be inhabited: “I am the LORD, and there is no other.
45:19I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth. I did not say to the offspring of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in vain.’ I am the LORD, who speaks righteousness and declares what is upright.
45:20Gather yourselves and come; draw near together, you survivors of the nations. They have no knowledge who carry about their wooden carved image and pray to a god that cannot save.
45:21Declare and bring your case near; indeed, let them take counsel together. Who proclaimed this from long ago? Who declared it from ancient times? Was it not I, the LORD? There is no other God besides Me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none except Me.
45:22Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.
45:23By Myself I have sworn; from My mouth a righteous word has gone forth, and it shall not return: to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
45:24They shall say of Me, ‘Only in the LORD are righteousness and strength.’ To Him shall come all who were incensed against Him, and they shall be ashamed.
45:25In the LORD all the offspring of Israel shall be justified and shall glory.”

Chapter 46

46:1Bel bows down; Nebo stoops. Their idols are on beasts and livestock. The things you carried are loaded as burdens upon weary animals.
46:2They stoop; they bow down together. They cannot rescue the burden, and they themselves go into captivity.
46:3“Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne from the womb and carried from birth.
46:4Even to your old age I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; indeed, I will carry and deliver you.
46:5To whom will you liken Me and make Me equal? To whom will you compare Me, that we should be alike?
46:6They pour out gold from a bag and weigh silver on the scales. They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god. They fall down; indeed, they bow before it.
46:7They lift it upon the shoulder and carry it; they set it in its place, and there it stands. It does not move from its place. Though one cries to it, it does not answer or save him from his distress.
46:8Remember this and stand firm; take it to heart, you transgressors.
46:9Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me,
46:10declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure’;
46:11calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of My counsel from a distant land. Indeed, I have spoken; indeed, I will bring it to pass. I have formed it; indeed, I will do it.
46:12Listen to Me, you stubborn-hearted, who are far from righteousness.
46:13I bring My righteousness near; it is not far off, and My salvation shall not delay. I will place salvation in Zion, My glory for Israel.”

Chapter 47

47:1“Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon. Sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans, for you shall no longer be called tender and delicate.
47:2Take millstones and grind flour. Remove your veil, draw up your skirt, uncover your leg, and cross the rivers.
47:3Your nakedness shall be uncovered, and your shame shall be seen. I will take vengeance and spare no man.”
47:4Our Redeemer—the LORD of Hosts is His Name—is the Holy One of Israel.
47:5“Sit silently and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans, for you shall no longer be called Mistress of Kingdoms.
47:6I was angry with My people; I profaned My inheritance and gave them into your hand. You showed them no mercy; upon the aged you laid your yoke very heavily.
47:7You said, ‘I shall be mistress forever,’ so that you did not take these things to heart or remember their end.
47:8Now therefore hear this, you who live in luxury, who dwell securely, who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I shall not sit as a widow or know the loss of children.’
47:9But these two things shall come upon you in a moment, in one day: the loss of children and widowhood. They shall come upon you in full measure, despite the multitude of your sorceries and the great power of your charms.
47:10You trusted in your wickedness and said, ‘No one sees me.’ Your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, and you said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’
47:11But evil shall come upon you, which you will not know how to charm away; disaster shall fall upon you, which you cannot avert; and desolation shall come upon you suddenly, of which you know nothing.
47:12Stand now with your charms and the multitude of your sorceries, in which you have labored from your youth. Perhaps you may succeed; perhaps you may cause terror.
47:13You are wearied by the multitude of your counsels. Let the astrologers stand and save you—those who gaze at the stars, who make known month by month what shall come upon you.
47:14Behold, they are like stubble; the fire burns them. They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. There is no coal for warming oneself, no fire to sit before.
47:15So shall they be to you, those with whom you have labored, your traders from your youth. Each wanders in his own direction; there is no one to save you.”

Chapter 48

48:1Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and have come from the waters of Judah; who swear by the Name of the LORD and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth or in righteousness.
48:2For they call themselves of the Holy City and lean upon the God of Israel; the LORD of Hosts is His Name.
48:3I declared the former things long ago; they went forth from My mouth, and I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
48:4Because I knew that you were obstinate, that your neck was an iron sinew and your forehead bronze,
48:5I declared them to you long ago; before they came to pass I caused you to hear, lest you say, “My idol did them; my carved image and my cast-metal image commanded them.”
48:6You have heard; see all this. Will you not declare it? From now on I cause you to hear new things, hidden things that you did not know.
48:7They are created now, and not long ago; before today you had not heard them, lest you say, “Behold, I knew them.”
48:8Indeed, you had not heard; indeed, you had not known; indeed, from long ago your ear had not been opened. For I knew that you would deal very treacherously, and from the womb you were called a transgressor.
48:9For My Name’s sake I defer My anger, and for My praise I restrain it for you, so that I do not cut you off.
48:10Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
48:11For My own sake, for My own sake, I do it; for how should My Name be profaned? I will not give My glory to another.
48:12Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I called: I am He; I am the first, and I am the last.
48:13My hand also founded the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens. When I call to them, they stand together.
48:14Gather, all of you, and hear. Who among them has declared these things? The one whom the LORD loves shall perform His pleasure against Babylon, and His arm shall be against the Chaldeans.
48:15I, even I, have spoken; indeed, I have called him. I have brought him, and his way shall prosper.
48:16Draw near to Me; hear this. From the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time it came to be, I was there. And now the Lord, the LORD, has sent Me, and His Spirit.
48:17Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.
48:18O that you had attended to My commandments. Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
48:19Your offspring would have been like the sand, and those born from your body like its grains. Their name would not have been cut off or destroyed before Me.”
48:20Go out from Babylon; flee from the Chaldeans. Declare this with a voice of singing; cause it to be heard. Send it forth to the end of the earth. Say, “The LORD has redeemed His servant Jacob.”
48:21They did not thirst when He led them through the wastelands; He caused water to flow for them from the rock. He split the rock, and the waters gushed out.
48:22“There is no peace,” says the LORD, “for the wicked.”

Chapter 49

49:1Listen to Me, O coastlands, and attend, you peoples from afar. The LORD called Me from the womb; from the body of My mother He made mention of My Name.
49:2He made My mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of His hand He hid Me. He made Me a polished arrow; in His quiver He concealed Me.
49:3And He said to Me, “You are My Servant, Israel, in whom I will glorify Myself.”
49:4But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent My strength for emptiness and futility. Yet surely My judgment is with the LORD, and My reward with My God.”
49:5And now says the LORD, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, that Israel might be gathered to Him—for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and My God has become My strength—
49:6He says, “It is too light a thing for You to be My Servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob and restore the preserved of Israel. I will also give You as a light to the nations, that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
49:7Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to Him who is despised, abhorred by the nation, the Servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and rise; princes shall bow down, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen You.”
49:8Thus says the LORD: “In a time of favor I answered You, and in a day of salvation I helped You. I will keep You and give You as a covenant for the people, to establish the land and apportion the desolate inheritances;
49:9to say to the prisoners, ‘Go out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’ They shall feed along the ways, and their pasture shall be on all the bare heights.
49:10They shall not hunger or thirst, nor shall scorching heat or sun strike them; for He who has compassion on them shall lead them and guide them beside springs of water.
49:11I will make all My mountains a road, and My highways shall be raised up.
49:12Behold, these shall come from afar; behold, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Sinim.”
49:13Sing, O heavens, and rejoice, O earth; break forth into singing, O mountains. For the LORD has comforted His people and has compassion on His afflicted ones.
49:14But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me.”
49:15“Can a woman forget her nursing child, or fail to have compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.
49:16Behold, I have inscribed you upon the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me.
49:17Your children hurry back; those who destroyed you and laid you waste shall depart from you.
49:18Lift up your eyes all around and see: they all gather and come to you. As I live,” an utterance of the LORD, “you shall surely put them all on as an ornament and bind them on as a bride.
49:19For your waste and desolate places and your ruined land shall now be too narrow for the inhabitants, and those who swallowed you up shall be far away.
49:20The children born during your bereavement shall yet say in your hearing, ‘The place is too narrow for me; make room for me to dwell.’
49:21Then you shall say in your heart, ‘Who has borne these for me, since I was bereaved and barren, exiled and cast away? Who has reared these? Behold, I was left alone; where then did these come from?’”
49:22Thus says the Lord, the LORD: “Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nations and raise My standard to the peoples. They shall bring your sons in their arms, and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.
49:23Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their princesses your nursing mothers. They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth and lick the dust of your feet. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; those who wait for Me shall not be ashamed.”
49:24Can prey be taken from the mighty, or lawful captives be rescued?
49:25For thus says the LORD: “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, and the prey of the ruthless shall be rescued. I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will save your children.
49:26I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall become drunk on their own blood as with new wine. Then all flesh shall know that I, the LORD, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Chapter 50

50:1Thus says the LORD: “Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce, by which I sent her away? Or to which of My creditors did I sell you? Behold, for your iniquities you were sold, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.
50:2Why, when I came, was there no one? When I called, why was there no one to answer? Is My hand too short to redeem? Have I no power to deliver? Behold, by My rebuke I dry up the sea; I make the rivers a wilderness. Their fish stink for lack of water and die of thirst.
50:3I clothe the heavens with blackness and make sackcloth their covering.”
50:4The Lord, the LORD, has given Me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning He awakens; He awakens My ear to hear as those who are taught.
50:5The Lord, the LORD, has opened My ear, and I was not rebellious; I did not turn backward.
50:6I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who pulled out the beard. I did not hide My face from disgrace and spitting.
50:7But the Lord, the LORD, helps Me; therefore I have not been disgraced. Therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
50:8He who justifies Me is near. Who will contend with Me? Let us stand together. Who is My adversary? Let him draw near to Me.
50:9Behold, the Lord, the LORD, helps Me. Who is he who will condemn Me? Behold, they shall all wear out like a garment; the moth shall eat them.
50:10Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of His Servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the Name of the LORD and lean upon his God.
50:11Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who gird yourselves with firebrands: walk in the light of your fire and among the firebrands you have kindled. This you shall have from My hand: you shall lie down in sorrow.

Chapter 51

51:1Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, who seek the LORD. Look to the rock from which you were hewn and to the quarry from which you were dug.
51:2Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah, who bore you; for he was one when I called him, and I blessed him and multiplied him.
51:3For the LORD shall comfort Zion; He shall comfort all her ruins. He shall make her wilderness like Eden and her desert like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness shall be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of song.
51:4Attend to Me, O My people, and give ear to Me, O My nation. For instruction shall go out from Me, and I will establish My judgment as a light for the peoples.
51:5My righteousness draws near; My salvation has gone forth, and My arms shall judge the peoples. The coastlands shall wait for Me, and for My arm they shall hope.
51:6Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall vanish like smoke, and the earth shall wear out like a garment, and its inhabitants shall die like gnats. But My salvation shall be forever, and My righteousness shall not be broken.
51:7Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, a people in whose heart is My instruction. Do not fear the reproach of man or be dismayed by their revilings.
51:8For the moth shall eat them like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool; but My righteousness shall be forever, and My salvation from generation to generation.
51:9Awake, awake; put on strength, O arm of the LORD. Awake as in days of old, the generations long ago. Was it not You who cut the sea monster in pieces, who pierced the sea dragon?
51:10Was it not You who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over?
51:11And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
51:12I, I am He who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mortal man, who dies, or the son of man, who is made like grass,
51:13and forget the LORD your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth? You fear continually, all the day, because of the fury of the oppressor as he prepares to destroy. But where is the fury of the oppressor?
51:14The one bent down in chains shall soon be released; he shall not die and descend into the pit, nor shall his bread fail.
51:15For I am the LORD your God, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar; the LORD of Hosts is His Name.
51:16I have put My words in your mouth and covered you in the shadow of My hand, to plant the heavens and lay the foundations of the earth, and to say to Zion, “You are My people.”
51:17Awake, awake; rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of His wrath; you have drunk the goblet, the cup of staggering, and drained it.
51:18There is none to guide her among all the sons she has borne; there is none to take her by the hand among all the sons she has reared.
51:19These two things have befallen you—who shall mourn for you? Devastation and destruction, famine and sword—who shall comfort you?
51:20Your sons have fainted; they lie at the head of every street like an antelope in a net. They are full of the wrath of the LORD, the rebuke of your God.
51:21Therefore hear this, O afflicted one, drunk, but not with wine.
51:22Thus says your Lord, the LORD, your God who pleads the cause of His people: “Behold, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering, the goblet, the cup of My wrath. You shall never drink it again.
51:23I will put it into the hand of those who afflict you, who said to you, ‘Bow down, that we may pass over you’; and you made your back like the ground and like the street for those who passed over.”

Chapter 52

52:1Awake, awake; put on your strength, O Zion. Put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the Holy City; for the uncircumcised and the unclean shall no longer enter you.
52:2Shake yourself from the dust; arise and sit, O Jerusalem. Loose the bonds from your neck, O captive daughter of Zion.
52:3For thus says the LORD: “You were sold for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money.”
52:4For thus says the Lord, the LORD: “My people went down at first to Egypt to sojourn there, and afterward Assyria oppressed them without cause.
52:5Now therefore, what have I here,” an utterance of the LORD, “that My people are taken away for nothing? Those who rule over them howl,” an utterance of the LORD, “and continually, all the day, My Name is despised.
52:6Therefore My people shall know My Name; therefore in that day they shall know that I am He who speaks. Behold, it is I.”
52:7How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good tidings, who proclaims peace, who brings good tidings of good, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
52:8The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice; together they sing for joy, for eye to eye they see the LORD returning to Zion.
52:9Break forth together into singing, O ruins of Jerusalem; for the LORD has comforted His people, He has redeemed Jerusalem.
52:10The LORD has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
52:11Depart, depart; go out from there. Touch no unclean thing. Go out from her midst; purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of the LORD.
52:12For you shall not go out in haste, nor shall you go in flight; for the LORD shall go before you, and the God of Israel shall be your rear guard.
52:13Behold, My Servant shall act wisely; He shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high.
52:14Just as many were astonished at You—His appearance was so marred beyond that of a man, and His form beyond that of the sons of men—
52:15so He shall sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths because of Him; for what had not been told them they shall see, and what they had not heard they shall understand.

Chapter 53

53:1Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
53:2He grew up before Him like a tender shoot and like a root out of dry ground. He had no form or majesty that we should look upon Him, no appearance that we should desire Him.
53:3He was despised and rejected by men, a Man of pains and acquainted with sickness; and as one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
53:4Surely He bore our sicknesses and carried our pains; yet we esteemed Him stricken, struck by God, and afflicted.
53:5But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities. The discipline that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed.
53:6All of us like sheep have gone astray; each has turned to his own way, and the LORD has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.
53:7He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. Like a lamb He was led to the slaughter, and like a sheep silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth.
53:8By oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as for His generation, who considered that He was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of My people?
53:9His grave was appointed with the wicked, and with a rich man in His death, though He had done no violence, nor was deceit in His mouth.
53:10Yet the LORD was pleased to crush Him; He caused Him to suffer. When His life is made a guilt offering, He shall see His seed; He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
53:11Out of the anguish of His soul He shall see and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, and He shall bear their iniquities.
53:12Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the many, and He shall divide the spoil with the mighty, because He poured out His life to death and was numbered with transgressors. He bore the sin of many and interceded for transgressors.

Chapter 54

54:1“Sing, O barren one who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor. For the children of the desolate one are more than the children of the married woman,” says the LORD.
54:2“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your dwelling places be stretched out. Do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your pegs.
54:3For you shall spread abroad to the right and to the left; your offspring shall possess nations and cause desolate cities to be inhabited.
54:4Do not fear, for you shall not be ashamed; do not be humiliated, for you shall not be disgraced. For you shall forget the shame of your youth and shall remember the reproach of your widowhood no more.
54:5For your Maker is your husband; the LORD of Hosts is His Name. Your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of all the earth.
54:6For the LORD has called you like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is rejected,” says your God.
54:7“For a brief moment I forsook you, but with great compassion I will gather you.
54:8In an outburst of wrath I hid My face from you for a moment, but with everlasting steadfast love I will have compassion on you,” says the LORD, your Redeemer.
54:9“For this is like the waters of Noah to Me: as I swore that the waters of Noah would no more pass over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you or rebuke you.
54:10For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but My steadfast love shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.
54:11“O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in dark mortar and lay your foundations with sapphires.
54:12I will make your pinnacles of agate, your gates of sparkling stones, and all your border of precious stones.
54:13All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.
54:14In righteousness you shall be established. You shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear, and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
54:15Behold, if anyone fiercely attacks you, it is not from Me; whoever attacks you shall fall because of you.
54:16Behold, I have created the craftsman who blows the fire of coals and brings forth a weapon for its work; and I have created the destroyer to ruin.
54:17No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the inheritance of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is from Me,” an utterance of the LORD.

Chapter 55

55:1“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat. Indeed, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
55:2Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your labor for what does not satisfy? Listen diligently to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance.
55:3Incline your ear and come to Me; hear, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, the faithful mercies of David.
55:4Behold, I gave him as a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.
55:5Behold, you shall call a nation you do not know, and a nation that does not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God and the Holy One of Israel, for He has glorified you.”
55:6Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near.
55:7Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
55:8“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” an utterance of the LORD.
55:9“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.
55:10For as the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return there without watering the earth, causing it to bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
55:11so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth. It shall not return to Me empty, but it shall accomplish what I desire and prosper in that for which I sent it.
55:12For you shall go out with joy and be led forth in peace. The mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
55:13Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle. It shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

Chapter 56

56:1Thus says the LORD: “Keep justice and practice righteousness, for My salvation is near to come and My righteousness to be revealed.”
56:2O the blessedness of the man who does this, and of the son of man who holds fast to it; who keeps the Sabbath from profaning it and keeps his hand from doing any evil.
56:3Let not the son of the foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will surely separate me from His people.” Nor let the eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.”
56:4For thus says the LORD: “To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, choose what pleases Me, and hold fast to My covenant,
56:5I will give in My house and within My walls a monument and a name better than sons and daughters. I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off.
56:6And the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to the LORD, to serve Him, to love the Name of the LORD, and to be His servants—everyone who keeps the Sabbath from profaning it and holds fast to My covenant—
56:7these I will bring to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices shall be accepted on My altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”
56:8An utterance of the Lord, the LORD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel: “I will gather still others to him, besides those already gathered.”
56:9All you beasts of the field, come to devour—all you beasts in the forest.
56:10His watchmen are blind, all of them; they know nothing. All of them are mute dogs; they cannot bark. They dream, lie down, and love to slumber.
56:11The dogs have a mighty appetite; they never have enough. They are shepherds who have no understanding. They have all turned to their own way, each to his dishonest gain, every one of them.
56:12“Come,” they say, “let me get wine, and let us drink our fill of strong drink. Tomorrow shall be like today, only far more abundant.”

Chapter 57

57:1The righteous man perishes, and no one lays it to heart; faithful men are gathered away, while no one considers that the righteous man is taken away before evil comes.
57:2He enters into peace; they rest upon their beds, each one who walks in uprightness.
57:3“But you, draw near here, sons of a sorceress, offspring of an adulterer and a woman who commits sexual immorality.
57:4Whom are you mocking? Against whom do you open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, offspring of falsehood,
57:5who inflame yourselves among the oaks, under every green tree, slaughtering the children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?
57:6Among the smooth stones of the valley is your portion; they, they are your lot. To them you have poured out a drink offering; you have brought up a grain offering. Shall I be appeased by these things?
57:7Upon a high and lofty mountain you have set your bed; there you went up to offer sacrifice.
57:8Behind the door and the doorpost you set up your memorial. For apart from Me you uncovered yourself and went up; you enlarged your bed and made a covenant with them. You loved their bed; you looked upon their nakedness.
57:9You went to the king with oil and multiplied your perfumes. You sent your envoys far away and debased yourself even to the realm of the dead.
57:10You were wearied by the length of your way, yet you did not say, “It is hopeless.” You found renewed strength; therefore you did not faint.
57:11Whom did you dread and fear, so that you lied and did not remember Me or lay it to heart? Have I not been silent, even for a long time? Therefore you do not fear Me.
57:12I will declare your righteousness and your works, but they shall not profit you.
57:13When you cry out, let your gathered idols deliver you. The wind shall carry them all away; a breath shall take them. But he who takes refuge in Me shall inherit the land and possess My holy mountain.”
57:14And He shall say, “Build up, build up; prepare the way. Remove every stumbling-block from the way of My people.”
57:15For thus says the high and exalted One, who inhabits eternity and whose Name is holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is crushed and humble in spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the crushed.
57:16For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; for the spirit would grow faint before Me, and the souls I have made.
57:17Because of the iniquity of his dishonest gain I was angry and struck him; I hid Myself and was angry, but he went on turning away in the way of his heart.
57:18I have seen his ways, but I will heal him. I will lead him and restore comforts to him and to his mourners,
57:19creating the fruit of the lips: peace, peace, to the far and to the near; and I will heal him,” says the LORD.
57:20But the wicked are like the tossing sea, for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and mud.
57:21“There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”

Chapter 58

58:1“Cry aloud; do not hold back. Lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare to My people their transgression and to the house of Jacob their sins.
58:2Yet they seek Me day by day and delight to know My ways, as though they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God. They ask Me for righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.
58:3‘Why have we fasted, and You have not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You have not known?’ Behold, on the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure and drive all your laborers hard.
58:4Behold, you fast for strife and contention and to strike with a wicked fist. You cannot fast as you do today and make your voice heard on high.
58:5Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a man to humble himself? Is it to bow his head like a reed and spread sackcloth and ashes beneath him? Will you call this a fast and a day pleasing to the LORD?
58:6Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to untie the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
58:7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the wandering poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
58:8Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly. Your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
58:9Then you shall call, and the LORD shall answer; you shall cry, and He shall say, “Behold Me.” If you remove the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and the speaking of wickedness;
58:10if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light shall rise in the darkness, and your gloom shall be like noon.
58:11The LORD shall guide you continually and satisfy your soul in scorched places and strengthen your bones. You shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.
58:12Those from among you shall rebuild the ancient ruins; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations. You shall be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of Paths to Dwell In.
58:13If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your own pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, seeking your own pleasure, or speaking your own words,
58:14then you shall delight yourself in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride upon the high places of the earth and feed you with the inheritance of Jacob your father; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

Chapter 59

59:1Behold, the hand of the LORD is not shortened, that it cannot save, nor is His ear heavy, that it cannot hear.
59:2But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He does not hear.
59:3For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers with iniquity. Your lips have spoken falsehood; your tongue mutters perversity.
59:4No one calls for justice, and no one pleads his case in truth. They trust in emptiness and speak falsehood; they conceive trouble and give birth to iniquity.
59:5They hatch vipers’ eggs and weave spiders’ webs. Whoever eats their eggs dies, and when one is crushed, a viper hatches.
59:6Their webs shall not become clothing, nor shall they cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and deeds of violence are in their hands.
59:7Their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; devastation and destruction are in their highways.
59:8They do not know the way of peace, and there is no justice in their paths. They have made their roads crooked; no one who walks in them knows peace.
59:9Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us. We wait for light, but behold, darkness; for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
59:10We grope along the wall like the blind; indeed, we grope like those without eyes. We stumble at noon as in twilight; among the strong, we are like the dead.
59:11We all growl like bears and moan mournfully like doves. We wait for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us.
59:12For our transgressions are multiplied before You, and our sins testify against us. For our transgressions are with us, and we know our iniquities:
59:13transgressing and lying against the LORD, turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering words of falsehood from the heart.
59:14Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the city square, and uprightness cannot enter.
59:15Truth is lacking, and he who turns away from evil makes himself prey. The LORD saw it, and it was evil in His sight that there was no justice.
59:16He saw that there was no man and was astonished that there was no intercessor. Then His own arm brought Him salvation, and His righteousness sustained Him.
59:17He put on righteousness as a breastplate and a helmet of salvation upon His head. He put on garments of vengeance for clothing and wrapped Himself in zeal as a cloak.
59:18According to their deeds, so shall He repay: fury to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies; to the coastlands He shall repay recompense.
59:19So they shall fear the Name of the LORD from the west and His glory from the rising of the sun. For He shall come like a rushing stream, driven by the Spirit of the LORD.
59:20“A Redeemer shall come to Zion, and to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,” an utterance of the LORD.
59:21“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit who is upon you, and My words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, or from the mouth of your children, or from the mouth of your children’s children,” says the LORD, “from now on and forever.”

Chapter 60

60:1Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
60:2For behold, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD rises upon you, and His glory appears over you.
60:3Nations come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.
60:4“Lift up your eyes all around and see: they all gather together; they come to you. Your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the hip.
60:5Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall tremble and swell with joy, because the wealth of the sea shall be turned to you, and the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
60:6A multitude of camels shall cover you, young camels of Midian and Ephah. All those from Sheba shall come; they shall carry gold and frankincense, and proclaim the praises of the LORD.
60:7All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth shall serve you. They shall be accepted upon My altar, and I shall beautify the house of My splendor.
60:8Who are these who fly like a cloud, and like doves to their windows?
60:9Surely the coastlands wait for Me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring your sons from afar, with their silver and gold, for the Name of the LORD your God and for the Holy One of Israel, because He has beautified you.
60:10Foreigners shall build your walls, and their kings shall serve you; for in My wrath I struck you, but in My favor I have had compassion on you.
60:11Your gates shall remain open continually; they shall not be shut day or night, so that the wealth of the nations may be brought to you, with their kings led in procession.
60:12For the nation and kingdom that will not serve you shall perish; those nations shall be utterly desolate.
60:13The glory of Lebanon shall come to you—the cypress, the pine, and the box tree together—to beautify the place of My sanctuary; and I shall make the place of My feet glorious.
60:14The sons of those who afflicted you shall come bowing before you, and all who despised you shall bow at the soles of your feet. They shall call you, ‘The City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel.’
60:15Whereas you were forsaken and hated, with no one passing through, I shall make you an everlasting pride, a joy from generation to generation.
60:16You shall drink the milk of nations and be nursed at royal breasts; and you shall know that I, the LORD, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
60:17Instead of bronze I shall bring gold, instead of iron I shall bring silver, instead of wood bronze, and instead of stones iron. I shall appoint peace as your overseers, and righteousness as your taskmasters.
60:18Violence shall no longer be heard in your land, nor devastation or destruction within your borders; but you shall call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise.
60:19The sun shall no longer be your light by day, nor shall the moon give you brightness; but the LORD shall be your everlasting light, and your God shall be your glory.
60:20Your sun shall no longer set, nor shall your moon wane; for the LORD shall be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning shall be ended.
60:21Then all your people shall be righteous; they shall possess the land forever—the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, that I may be glorified.
60:22The least one shall become a thousand, and the smallest a mighty nation. I, the LORD, shall hasten it in its time.”

Chapter 61

61:1“The Spirit of the Lord, the LORD, is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the humble. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of prison to those who are bound;
61:2to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
61:3to appoint for those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit. They shall be called Oaks of Righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”
61:4They shall rebuild the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former desolations, and renew the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations.
61:5Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks, and foreigners shall be your farmers and your vinedressers.
61:6But you shall be called priests of the LORD; they shall speak of you as ministers of our God. You shall consume the wealth of nations, and in their glory you shall boast.
61:7Instead of your shame you shall have a double portion, and instead of disgrace they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs.
61:8“For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery and injustice. I shall faithfully give them their reward, and make an everlasting covenant with them.
61:9Their offspring shall be known among the nations, and their descendants among the peoples. All who see them shall acknowledge that they are offspring the LORD has blessed.”
61:10I shall greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God. For He has clothed me with garments of salvation and covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
61:11For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord, the LORD, shall cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

Chapter 62

62:1For Zion’s sake I shall not be silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I shall not rest, until her righteousness goes forth like brightness, and her salvation burns like a torch.
62:2The nations shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD shall name.
62:3You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
62:4You shall no longer be called “Forsaken,” nor shall your land be called “Desolate”; but you shall be called “My Delight Is in Her,” and your land “Married”; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married.
62:5For as a young man marries a virgin, so your sons shall marry you; and as a bridegroom rejoices over a bride, so your God shall rejoice over you.
62:6“Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen. All day and all night they shall never be silent.” You who remind the LORD, take no rest,
62:7and give Him no rest until He establishes Jerusalem and makes her a praise in the earth.
62:8The LORD has sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: “I shall no longer give your grain as food for your enemies, nor shall foreigners drink your new wine for which you have labored.
62:9But those who gather it shall eat it and praise the LORD, and those who collect it shall drink it in My holy courts.”
62:10Pass through, pass through the gates; prepare the way for the people. Build up, build up the highway; clear it of stones; lift up a banner over the peoples.
62:11Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth: “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your salvation comes; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.’”
62:12And they shall call them “The Holy People, the Redeemed of the LORD”; and you shall be called “Sought Out, a City Not Forsaken.”

Chapter 63

63:1Who is this coming from Edom, with crimsoned garments from Bozrah—this One splendid in His clothing, marching in the greatness of His strength? “It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.”
63:2Why is Your clothing red, and Your garments like those of one treading in a winepress?
63:3“I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with Me. I trod them in My anger and trampled them in My fury; their lifeblood spattered My garments, and I stained all My clothing.
63:4For the day of vengeance was in My heart, and the year of My redeemed had come.
63:5I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled that there was no one to support Me. So My own arm brought Me salvation, and My fury upheld Me.
63:6I trampled peoples in My anger; I made them drunk in My fury, and poured their lifeblood down to the earth.”
63:7I shall recount the steadfast acts of the LORD, the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD has done for us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel that He has shown them according to His compassion and the abundance of His steadfast love.
63:8For He said, “Surely they are My people, sons who will not deal falsely.” And He became their Savior.
63:9In all their distress He was no adversary; the Angel of His Presence saved them. In His love and in His pity He redeemed them; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.
63:10But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; therefore He turned to be their enemy, and He Himself fought against them.
63:11Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses. Where is He who brought them up from the sea with the shepherd of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit in their midst,
63:12who caused His glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses, dividing the waters before them, to make for Himself an everlasting Name;
63:13who led them through the depths? Like a horse in the wilderness, they did not stumble.
63:14Like cattle that go down into a valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. So You led Your people, to make for Yourself a glorious Name.
63:15Look down from heaven and see, from Your holy and beautiful dwelling. Where are Your zeal and Your might? The stirring of Your inward being and Your compassion are withheld from me.
63:16For You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; our Redeemer from of old is Your Name.
63:17Why do You make us wander, O LORD, from Your ways, and harden our hearts so that we do not fear You? Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your inheritance.
63:18Your holy people possessed it for only a little while; our adversaries have trampled Your sanctuary.
63:19We have long been like those over whom You never ruled, like those who were not called by Your Name. Oh, that You would tear open the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at Your presence—

Chapter 64

64:1as fire kindles brushwood, and fire causes water to boil—to make Your Name known to Your adversaries, that nations might tremble at Your presence!
64:2When You did awesome things that we did not expect, You came down, and the mountains quaked at Your presence.
64:3From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear; no eye has seen a God besides You, who acts for those who wait for Him.
64:4You meet the one who rejoices and does righteousness, those who remember You in Your ways. Behold, You were angry, and we sinned; we have long continued in them—and shall we be saved?
64:5We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.
64:6There is no one who calls upon Your Name, who stirs himself to take hold of You; for You have hidden Your face from us and made us waste away because of our iniquities.
64:7But now, O LORD, You are our Father. We are the clay, and You are our Potter; we are all the work of Your hand.
64:8Do not be exceedingly angry, O LORD, nor remember iniquity forever. Behold, look upon us, we implore You; we are all Your people.
64:9Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
64:10Our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised You, has been burned with fire, and all our precious things have become ruins.
64:11Will You restrain Yourself at these things, O LORD? Will You remain silent and afflict us exceedingly?

Chapter 65

65:1“I was sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. I said, ‘Behold Me, behold Me,’ to a nation that was not calling on My Name.
65:2I spread out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own thoughts;
65:3a people who continually provoke Me to My face, sacrificing in gardens and burning incense upon bricks;
65:4who sit among tombs and lodge in secret places; who eat the flesh of pigs, with broth of unclean meat in their vessels;
65:5who say, ‘Keep to yourself; do not come near me, for I am holier than you.’ These are smoke in My nostrils, a fire burning all day long.
65:6Behold, it is written before Me: I shall not remain silent, but shall repay; I shall repay into their bosom
65:7both your iniquities and the iniquities of your fathers,” says the LORD, “because they burned incense on the mountains and reproached Me upon the hills. Therefore I shall measure their former deeds into their bosom.”
65:8Thus says the LORD: “As new wine is found in a cluster, and one says, ‘Do not destroy it, for a blessing is in it,’ so I shall act for My servants’ sake, and not destroy them all.
65:9I shall bring forth offspring from Jacob, and from Judah an heir of My mountains. My chosen ones shall possess it, and My servants shall dwell there.
65:10Sharon shall become a pasture for flocks, and the Valley of Achor a resting place for herds, for My people who have sought Me.
65:11But you who forsake the LORD, who forget My holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny—
65:12I shall destine you for the sword, and all of you shall bow down to slaughter; because I called, but you did not answer; I spoke, but you did not listen. You did evil in My sight and chose that in which I did not delight.”
65:13Therefore, thus says the Lord, the LORD: “Behold, My servants shall eat, but you shall hunger; behold, My servants shall drink, but you shall thirst; behold, My servants shall rejoice, but you shall be put to shame.
65:14Behold, My servants shall sing for joy of heart, but you shall cry out from pain of heart and wail from anguish of spirit.
65:15You shall leave your name as a curse to My chosen ones, and the Lord, the LORD, shall put you to death; but He shall call His servants by another name,
65:16so that whoever blesses himself in the land shall bless himself by the God of faithfulness, and whoever swears in the land shall swear by the God of faithfulness; because the former distresses shall be forgotten and hidden from My eyes.
65:17For behold, I am creating new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered, nor come to mind.
65:18But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for behold, I am creating Jerusalem as a rejoicing, and her people as a joy.
65:19I shall rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in My people; the sound of weeping shall no longer be heard in her, nor the sound of crying.
65:20No longer shall there be in her an infant who lives only a few days, or an old man who does not complete his days; for the youth shall die at a hundred years, and the sinner who fails to reach a hundred shall be accursed.
65:21They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
65:22They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat. For as the days of a tree are the days of My people, and My chosen ones shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
65:23They shall not labor in vain, nor bear children for calamity; for they are offspring blessed by the LORD, and their descendants with them.
65:24And it shall come to pass that before they call, I shall answer; while they are still speaking, I shall hear.
65:25The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but dust shall be the serpent’s food. They shall not do evil or destroy in all My holy mountain,” says the LORD.

Chapter 66

66:1Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool. Where is the house you would build for Me? And where is the place of My rest?
66:2For My hand made all these things, and so all these came to be,” an utterance of the LORD. “But to this one I shall look: to the humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word.
66:3He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man; he who sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog’s neck; he who brings a grain offering, like one who offers pig’s blood; he who burns frankincense, like one who blesses an idol. They have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.
66:4I also shall choose their delusions and bring their fears upon them, because I called, but no one answered; I spoke, but they did not listen. They did evil in My sight and chose that in which I did not delight.”
66:5Hear the word of the LORD, you who tremble at His word: “Your brothers who hate you and cast you out for My Name’s sake have said, ‘Let the LORD be glorified, that we may see your joy!’ But they shall be put to shame.”
66:6A sound of uproar from the city, a sound from the temple—the sound of the LORD repaying His enemies.
66:7Before she travailed, she gave birth; before labor pain came upon her, she delivered a son.
66:8Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall a land be brought forth in one day? Shall a nation be born at once? Yet as soon as Zion travailed, she gave birth to her sons.
66:9“Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause delivery?” says the LORD. “Shall I, who cause delivery, shut the womb?” says your God.
66:10“Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her, all you who love her. Rejoice greatly with her, all you who mourn over her,
66:11so that you may nurse and be satisfied at the breast of her consolations; so that you may drink deeply and delight yourselves in the abundance of her glory.”
66:12For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I shall extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream. You shall nurse; you shall be carried on the hip and dandled upon the knees.
66:13As one whom his mother comforts, so shall I comfort you; and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”
66:14You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your bones shall flourish like tender grass. The hand of the LORD shall be known toward His servants, and His indignation toward His enemies.
66:15For behold, the LORD shall come in fire, and His chariots like a whirlwind, to render His anger in fury and His rebuke with flames of fire.
66:16For by fire and by His sword the LORD shall enter into judgment with all flesh, and many shall be the slain of the LORD.
66:17“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to enter the gardens, following one in the midst, eating the flesh of pigs and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together,” an utterance of the LORD.
66:18“And I—because of their works and their thoughts—am coming to gather all nations and tongues; they shall come and see My glory.
66:19I shall set a sign among them, and send survivors from them to the nations—to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow; to Tubal and Greece, and to the distant coastlands that have not heard My fame or seen My glory. They shall declare My glory among the nations.
66:20They shall bring all your brothers from all the nations as a grain offering to the LORD—on horses, in chariots, in litters, on mules, and on young camels—to My holy mountain Jerusalem,” says the LORD, “just as the sons of Israel bring the grain offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD.
66:21And I shall also take some of them as priests and Levites,” says the LORD.
66:22“For as the new heavens and the new earth that I am making shall endure before Me,” an utterance of the LORD, “so shall your offspring and your name endure.
66:23From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to bow before Me,” says the LORD.
66:24“And they shall go out and look upon the corpses of the men who rebelled against Me; for their worm shall not die, and their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”
