Chapter 1

1:1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Anointed One, Son of God.
1:2As it is written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.
1:3A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.”
1:4John came immersing in the wilderness and proclaiming an immersion of repentance for forgiveness of sins,
1:5And all the region of Judea, and all those of Jerusalem, were going out to him, and they were all immersed by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
1:6And John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey,
1:7And he preached, saying, “After me comes One mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie;
1:8I indeed immersed you in water, but He will immerse you in the Holy Spirit.”
1:9And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was immersed by John in the Jordan;
1:10And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove;
1:11And a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My Son, the Beloved; in You I delight.”
1:12And immediately the Spirit drove Him out into the wilderness,
1:13And He was there in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were serving Him.
1:14And after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom of God,
1:15And saying, “The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has drawn near. Repent and believe in the gospel.”
1:16And walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen,
1:17And Jesus said to them, “Come after Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
1:18And immediately, having left their nets, they followed Him.
1:19And going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in the boat mending the nets,
1:20And immediately He called them, and leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, they followed Him.
1:21And they went into Capernaum, and immediately, on the Sabbath, He entered the synagogue and was teaching,
1:22And they were astonished at His teaching, for He was teaching them as having authority, and not as the scribes.
1:23And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,
1:24Saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus the Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God.”
1:25And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
1:26And the unclean spirit having convulsed him, and having cried with a great voice, came forth out of him,
1:27And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new teaching is this? With authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him!”
1:28And the report about Him spread immediately throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
1:29And immediately, having come forth out of the synagogue, they went into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John,
1:30And Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever, and immediately they told Him about her,
1:31And after coming near, He raised her up, having laid hold of her hand, and the fever left her immediately, and she was ministering to them.
1:32And when evening came, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were ill and demon-possessed,
1:33And the whole city was gathered together near the door,
1:34And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and He cast out many demons, and did not permit the demons to speak, because they knew Him.
1:35And very early, while it was still dark, He arose, went out, and departed to a desolate place; and there He was praying.
1:36And Simon and those with him searched for Him,
1:37And having found Him, they said to Him, “Everyone is seeking You.”
1:38And He said to them, “Let us go into the nearby towns, that I may preach there also; for this is why I came forth.”
1:39And He was preaching in their synagogues, in all Galilee, and was casting out the demons,
1:40And a leper came to Him, begging Him and kneeling before Him, and saying to Him, “If You will, You can cleanse me.”
1:41And Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched forth His hand, touched him, and said to him, “I will; be cleansed.”
1:42And immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
1:43And sternly charging him, He immediately sent him away,
1:44And said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”
1:45But he went forth and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the report abroad, so that He could no longer openly enter a city, but remained outside in desolate places; and they were coming to Him from every side.

Chapter 2

2:1And again He entered into Capernaum, after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house,
2:2And immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door, and He was speaking to them the word.
2:3And they came to Him, bringing a paralytic, carried by four,
2:4And not being able to come near to Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was, and having broken it up, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying,
2:5And Jesus, having seen their faith, speaks to the paralytic, “Child, your sins have been forgiven you.”
2:6And there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
2:7“Why does this Man speak blasphemies? Who can forgive sins except One—God?”
2:8And immediately Jesus, having known in His spirit that they thus reason in themselves, said to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts?
2:9Which is easier? To say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven; or to say, Rise, and take up your pallet, and walk?
2:10And that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins—(He said to the paralytic)—
2:11I say to you, rise, and take up your pallet, and go away to your house”;
2:12And he rose immediately, took up the pallet, and went forth before all, so that all were astonished and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
2:13And He went forth again by the sea, and all the crowd was coming to Him, and He was teaching them,
2:14And passing by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and said to him, “Follow Me.” And he arose and followed Him.
2:15And it came to pass, as He reclined at table in his house, that many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they followed Him.
2:16And the scribes and the Pharisees, seeing Him eat with the tax collectors and sinners, said to His disciples, “Why does He eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
2:17And Jesus, hearing, said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need of a physician, but those who are ill. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
2:18And the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and spoke to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees fast, and Your disciples do not fast?”
2:19And Jesus said to them, “Can the companions of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast;
2:20But days will come when the bridegroom is taken from them, and then they will fast in those days.
2:21And no one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth upon an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it—the new from the old—and the tear becomes worse.
2:22And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine bursts the wineskins, and the wine is poured out, and the wineskins are destroyed. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”
2:23And it came to pass that He was going through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way, plucking the heads of grain,
2:24And the Pharisees said to Him, “Behold, why do they do on the Sabbath what is not lawful?”
2:25And He said to them, “Did you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry, he and those with him?
2:26How he entered the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave it to those who were with him?”
2:27And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath,
2:28So that the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Chapter 3

3:1And He entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man with a withered hand,
3:2And they were watching Him, whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, that they might accuse Him.
3:3And He said to the man with the withered hand, “Stand in the midst.”
3:4And He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good, or to do evil? To save life, or to kill?” But they were silent.
3:5And looking around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardness of their heart, He said to the man, “Stretch forth your hand.” And he stretched it forth, and his hand was restored whole like the other;
3:6And the Pharisees, having gone forth, immediately, with the Herodians, were taking counsel against Him how they might destroy Him.
3:7And Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, and from Judea,
3:8And from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and from around Tyre and Sidon—a great multitude, having heard how many things He was doing, came to Him.
3:9And He told His disciples that a little boat should be kept ready for Him because of the crowd, lest they press upon Him.
3:10For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions threw themselves upon Him in order to touch Him;
3:11And the unclean spirits, when they were seeing Him, were falling down before Him, and were crying, saying, “You are the Son of God”;
3:12And He strictly charged them not to make Him known.
3:13And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those whom He desired, and they came to Him;
3:14And He appointed twelve, that they may be with Him, and that He may send them forth to preach,
3:15And to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons.
3:16And He gave Simon the name Peter;
3:17And James son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James—to whom He gave the name “Sons of Thunder”;
3:18And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot,
3:19And Judas Iscariot, who also delivered Him up, and they came into a house.
3:20And a crowd came together again, so that they were not even able to eat;
3:21And those close to Him, having heard, went forth to take hold of Him; for they said, “He is beside Himself.”
3:22And the scribes who were from Jerusalem having come down, spoke, “He has Beelzebul,” and, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out the demons.”
3:23And after calling them near, He said to them in parables, “How is Satan able to cast out Satan?
3:24And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand;
3:25And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand;
3:26And if Satan has risen against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but has come to an end.
3:27No one can plunder the goods of the strong man by entering his house unless he first binds the strong man; then he will plunder his house.
3:28Truly I say to you, all sins will be forgiven to the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter,
3:29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness forever, but is liable to eternal judgment;
3:30Because they spoke, He has an unclean spirit.”
3:31Then His brothers and mother came, and standing outside, they sent to Him, calling Him,
3:32And a crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers seek You outside.”
3:33And He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?”
3:34And after looking around in a circle to those sitting around Him, He said, “Behold, My mother and My brothers!
3:35For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother, and My sister, and mother.”

Chapter 4

4:1And again He began to teach by the sea, and a great crowd gathered to Him, so that He entered the boat and sat in it upon the sea, while all the crowd was by the sea upon the land,
4:2And He taught them many things in parables, and He said to them in His teaching:
4:3“Hear, behold, the sower went forth to sow;
4:4And it came to pass as he sowed, some fell along the way, and the birds of the sky came and devoured it;
4:5And some fell upon rocky ground, where it did not have much earth, and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth,
4:6And when the sun arose, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered;
4:7And some fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit;
4:8And some fell upon the good ground and yielded fruit, coming up and increasing, and bore—some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
4:9And He said to them, “He who has ears to hear—let him hear.”
4:10And when He was alone, those around Him, with the Twelve, asked Him about the parable,
4:11And He said to them, “To you the secret of the kingdom of God has been given, but to those who are outside, everything is in parables,
4:12so that seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand, lest they should turn back and their sins be forgiven them.”
4:13And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How, then, will you understand all the parables?
4:14The sower sows the word.
4:15And these are the ones along the way where the word is sown: whenever they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.
4:16And these are likewise the ones sown upon rocky ground: whenever they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy,
4:17And they have no root in themselves, but endure only for a time; then, when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, immediately they fall away.
4:18And these are the ones sown among the thorns: these are those who hear the word,
4:19And the cares of this age, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
4:20And these are the ones sown upon the good ground: those who hear the word, receive it, and bear fruit—some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
4:21And He said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not to be put upon a lampstand?
4:22For nothing is hidden except that it should be revealed, nor has anything been concealed except that it should come to light.
4:23If any has ears to hear—let him hear.”
4:24And He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be added;
4:25For whoever has, there will be given to him, and whoever has not, also that which he has will be taken from him.”
4:26And He said, “Thus is the kingdom of God: as when a man casts seed upon the earth,
4:27And he sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed springs up and grows—he does not know how;
4:28For the earth bears fruit by itself: first a blade, then a head of grain, then full grain in the head;
4:29And when the grain is ready, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
4:30And He said, “To what may we compare the kingdom of God, or with what parable may we set it forth?
4:31It is like a mustard seed, which, when it is sown upon the earth, is smaller than all the seeds upon the earth;
4:32And when it is sown, it comes up and becomes larger than all the garden plants, and makes great branches, so that under its shade the birds of the sky can rest.”
4:33And with many such parables He spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it,
4:34And without a parable He did not speak to them; but privately, to His own disciples, He explained everything.
4:35And on that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us pass over to the other side.”
4:36And having sent away the crowd, they took Him with them in the boat, just as He was; and other little boats were also with Him.
4:37And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were beating into the boat, so that it was already filling,
4:38And He Himself was in the stern, sleeping upon the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
4:39And having awakened, He rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Be silent! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
4:40And He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How do you have no faith?”
4:41And they feared a great fear and spoke to one another, “Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

Chapter 5

5:1And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gadarenes,
5:2And He, having come forth out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
5:3Who had his dwelling among the tombs, and no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain,
5:4Because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken; and no one was able to tame him,
5:5And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones.
5:6And seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and prostrated himself before Him,
5:7And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of God the Most High? I adjure You by God, do not torment me!”
5:8For He said to him, “Come forth, unclean spirit, out of the man!”
5:9And He was questioning him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “Legion is my name, because we are many”;
5:10And he begged Him repeatedly not to send them out of the region.
5:11And there, near the mountains, a great herd of pigs was feeding,
5:12And all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, that we may enter them.”
5:13And immediately Jesus permitted them. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep into the sea—about two thousand pigs—and they were drowned in the sea.
5:14And those tending the pigs fled and reported it in the city and in the fields; and they came forth to see what had happened.
5:15And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting, clothed, and in his right mind—the one who had had the legion—and they were afraid;
5:16And those who had seen it told them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the pigs;
5:17And they began to beg Him to depart from their region.
5:18And as He entered the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him,
5:19And Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go to your house, to your own people, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”
5:20And he went away, and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him, and all were wondering.
5:21And Jesus, having crossed over in the boat again to the other side, there was gathered a great crowd to Him, and He was near the sea,
5:22And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus, came; and seeing Him, he fell at His feet,
5:23And begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands upon her, that she may be saved and live.”
5:24And He went with him, and a great crowd followed Him and thronged Him,
5:25And a certain woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years,
5:26And had suffered many things under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and had gained nothing, but rather had grown worse.
5:27Having heard about Jesus, having come in the crowd behind, she touched His garment,
5:28For she spoke, “If I even touch His garments, I will be saved”;
5:29And immediately the flow of her blood dried up, and she knew in her body that she had been healed of the affliction.
5:30And immediately Jesus, knowing in Himself that power had gone forth from Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?”
5:31And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”
5:32And He looked around to see her who had done this,
5:33And the woman, afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him all the truth.
5:34And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
5:35While He was still speaking, some came from the house of the ruler of the synagogue, saying, “Your daughter has died. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
5:36And Jesus immediately, having heard the word that was spoken, says to the chief of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid, only believe.”
5:37And He permitted no one to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James;
5:38And He came into the house of the ruler of the synagogue and saw a commotion, and much weeping and wailing;
5:39And after entering He said to them, “Why do you make a tumult, and weep? The child did not die, but sleeps”;
5:40And they laughed at Him. But having put them all out, He took the father of the child and the mother, and those with Him, and went in where the child was lying,
5:41And taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Girl, I say to you, arise.”
5:42And immediately the girl arose, and was walking, for she was twelve years old, and they were amazed with a great amazement,
5:43And He strictly charged them that no one should know this, and commanded that something be given her to eat.

Chapter 6

6:1And He went forth from there, and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him,
6:2And when the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and many who heard were astonished, saying, “From where did this One receive these things? And what is this wisdom that has been given to Him, that such mighty works are done through His hands?
6:3Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? And are His sisters not here with us?” And they took offense at Him.
6:4And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his relatives, and in his own house”;
6:5And He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands upon a few sick people and healed them;
6:6And He marveled because of their unbelief. And He went around the villages in a circuit, teaching,
6:7And He called the Twelve near and began to send them forth two by two, and He gave them authority over the unclean spirits,
6:8And He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff only—no bag, no bread, no money in their belts—
6:9But to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.
6:10And He said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, remain there until you depart from that place.
6:11And as many as do not receive you nor hear you, going out from there, shake off the dust that is under your foot for a testimony to them; truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom or Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.”
6:12And going forth, they preached that men should repent,
6:13And they were casting out many demons, and they were anointing many sick with oil, and they were healing them.
6:14And King Herod heard, for His Name had become known; and he said, “John the Immerser has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”
6:15Others said, “It is Elijah,” and others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets.”
6:16And Herod, hearing, said, “John, whom I beheaded—he has risen from the dead.”
6:17For Herod himself, having sent forth, laid hold on John, and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he married her,
6:18For John spoke to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother”;
6:19And Herodias held a grudge against him and desired to kill him, but was not able,
6:20For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
6:21And an opportune day came when Herod, on his birthday, made a banquet for his great men, the commanders, and the leading men of Galilee,
6:22And the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those reclining with him. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you desire, and I will give it to you.”
6:23And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you—up to half of my kingdom.”
6:24And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Immerser.”
6:25And immediately entering with haste to the king, she asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Immerser upon a platter.”
6:26And the king became deeply sorrowful, but because of his oaths and those reclining with him, he did not want to refuse her,
6:27And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring John’s head,
6:28And he, having gone, beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother;
6:29And when his disciples heard, they came, took up his body, and laid it in the tomb.
6:30And the apostles gathered together to Jesus and told Him everything they had done and everything they had taught,
6:31And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a little.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have an opportunity to eat.
6:32And they went away to a desolate place, in the boat, by themselves.
6:33And the crowds saw them going away, and many recognized Him; and they ran there on foot from all the cities, went before them, and came together to Him,
6:34And coming forth, Jesus saw a great crowd and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
6:35And when the hour was already late, His disciples came near to Him and said, “The place is desolate, and the hour is already late.
6:36Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding fields and villages and buy food for themselves, for they have nothing to eat.”
6:37And He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred days’ wages worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”
6:38And He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And having found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”
6:39And He commanded them to make all recline in companies on the green grass,
6:40And they reclined in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.
6:41And taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all,
6:42And they all ate, and were filled,
6:43And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces, and also of the fish.
6:44And those eating of the loaves were about five thousand men.
6:45And immediately He constrained His disciples to go into the boat, and to go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, until He lets the crowd away,
6:46And after taking leave of them, He went away to the mountain to pray.
6:47And when evening came, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and He alone on the land;
6:48And He saw them struggling at the oars, for the wind was against them; and about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking upon the sea, and intended to pass by them.
6:49And seeing Him walking upon the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out,
6:50For they all saw Him and were troubled; and immediately He spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage! I AM; do not be afraid.”
6:51And He went up to them into the boat, and the wind ceased; and they were utterly amazed in themselves and wondered,
6:52For they did not understand concerning the loaves, for their heart was hardened.
6:53And after crossing over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there,
6:54And when they came out of the boat, the people immediately recognized Him,
6:55They ran throughout all that surrounding region and began to carry upon pallets those who were ill, wherever they heard He was,
6:56And wherever He entered—villages, cities, or fields—they laid the ailing in the marketplaces and begged Him that they might touch even the fringe of His garment; and as many as touched Him were healed.

Chapter 7

7:1And the Pharisees and some of the scribes, having come from Jerusalem, gathered together to Him,
7:2And when they saw some of His disciples eating bread with defiled—that is, unwashed—hands, they found fault;
7:3For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands to the wrist, holding to the tradition of the elders;
7:4And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they immerse themselves; and there are many other things they received to hold: immersions of cups, pots, bronze vessels, and couches.
7:5Then the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”
7:6And He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me;
7:7And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
7:8For leaving the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men—the immersions of pots and cups—and many other such things you do.”
7:9And He said to them, “Well do you set aside the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.
7:10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’
7:11But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever you might have benefited from me is an offering,”’
7:12Then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother,
7:13Making void the word of God by your tradition that you handed down; and many such things you do.”
7:14And having called the whole crowd near, He said to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:
7:15There is nothing outside a man that, entering into him, can defile him; but the things that come out of him are the things that defile the man.
7:16If anyone has ears to hear—let him hear.”
7:17And when He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him about the parable,
7:18And He said to them, “Are you also without understanding? Do you not perceive that nothing from outside, entering into the man, can defile him,
7:19Because it does not enter into his heart, but into his stomach, and passes out into the latrine, purifying all foods?”
7:20And He said, “What comes out of the man, that defiles the man;
7:21For from within, out of the heart of men, come evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual immorality, murders,
7:22Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, an evil eye, slander, pride, foolishness;
7:23All these evils come forth from within, and they defile the man.”
7:24And from there He arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And entering a house, He desired no one to know, but He could not be hidden,
7:25For a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, came, and fell at His feet—
7:26And the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth—and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
7:27And Jesus said to her, “Let the children first be filled, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and cast it to the little dogs.”
7:28And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the little dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.”
7:29And He said to her, “Because of this word, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”
7:30And having gone away to her house, she found the demon gone out and her daughter lying on the bed.
7:31And again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came to the Sea of Galilee through the midst of the region of Decapolis,
7:32And they brought to Him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged Him to lay His hand on him.
7:33And taking him aside privately from the crowd, He put His fingers into his ears; and having spit, He touched his tongue,
7:34And looking up to heaven, He sighed and said to him, “Be opened.”
7:35And immediately his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.
7:36And He charged them to tell no one; but the more He charged them, the more abundantly they proclaimed it,
7:37And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Chapter 8

8:1In those days, when the crowd was very great and had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples near and said to them,
8:2“I have compassion on the crowd, because they have now remained with Me three days and have nothing to eat;
8:3And if I send them away fasting to their homes, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.”
8:4And His disciples answered Him, “From where can anyone fill these people with bread here in a wilderness?”
8:5And He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
8:6And He commanded the crowd to sit down upon the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to His disciples to set before the crowd; and they set them before the crowd.
8:7And they also had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said that these also should be set before them;
8:8And they ate and were filled, and they took up seven baskets of broken pieces that remained;
8:9And there were about four thousand who ate, and He sent them away,
8:10And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came into the region of Dalmanutha.
8:11And the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him;
8:12And having sighed deeply in His spirit, He said, “Why does this generation seek after a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
8:13And leaving them, He again entered the boat and went away to the other side.
8:14And they forgot to take bread, and had no more than one loaf with them in the boat,
8:15And He charged them, saying, “Take heed; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod.”
8:16And they reasoned with one another, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”
8:17And Jesus, knowing it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Is your heart still hardened?
8:18Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?
8:19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.”
8:20“And when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.”
8:21And He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
8:22And He came to Bethsaida, and they brought a blind man to Him and begged Him to touch him.
8:23And taking the blind man by the hand, He led him outside the village; and having spit on his eyes and laid His hands on him, He asked him whether he saw anything.
8:24And looking up, he said, “I see men, for I see them like trees walking.”
8:25Then He laid His hands on his eyes again; and he looked intently, and was restored, and saw everything clearly.
8:26And He sent him away to his house, saying, “Do not even enter the village, nor tell anyone in the village.”
8:27And Jesus and His disciples went forth into the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say I am?”
8:28And they answered, “John the Immerser; and others, Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.”
8:29And He said to them, “But you—who do you say I am?” And Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Anointed One.”
8:30And He strictly charged them to tell no one about Him.
8:31And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again;
8:32And He spoke the word openly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him,
8:33But He, turning and looking at His disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you do not set your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”
8:34And having called the crowd near with His disciples, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me;
8:35For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and for the good news’ sake will save it.
8:36For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?
8:37Or what will a man give as an exchange for his soul?
8:38For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

Chapter 9

9:1And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God having come with power.”
9:2And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them,
9:3And His garments became radiant, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them.
9:4And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
9:5And Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Teacher, it is good for us to be here; let us make three shelters: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—
9:6For he did not know what to say, because they were greatly afraid.
9:7And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, the Beloved; hear Him.”
9:8And suddenly, looking around, they saw no one anymore, except Jesus alone with them.
9:9And as they came down from the mountain, He charged them to tell no one the things they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
9:10And they kept the word to themselves, discussing together what rising from the dead meant.
9:11And they asked Him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
9:12And He answered and said to them, “Elijah indeed comes first and restores all things. And how is it written concerning the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
9:13But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they desired, as it is written of him.”
9:14And coming to the disciples, He saw a great crowd around them and scribes disputing with them,
9:15And immediately all the crowd, seeing Him, were amazed; and running near, they greeted Him.
9:16And He asked the scribes, “What are you disputing with them?”
9:17And one from the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit;
9:18And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; and he foams, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. And I spoke to Your disciples that they should cast it out, but they were not able.”
9:19And He answered him and said, “O unbelieving generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him to Me.”
9:20And they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, the spirit immediately convulsed him; and falling on the ground, he rolled about, foaming.
9:21And He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood.
9:22And often it has thrown him into fire and into water, that it might destroy him; but if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
9:23And Jesus said to him, “If you can believe—all things are possible to the one who believes.”
9:24And immediately the father of the child cried out with tears and said, “I believe, Lord; help my unbelief!”
9:25And Jesus, seeing that a crowd was running together, rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I charge you: come out of him, and enter him no more.”
9:26And after crying out and convulsing him greatly, it came out; and he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.”
9:27But Jesus, having taken him by the hand, lifted him up, and he arose.
9:28And when He had entered the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”
9:29And He said to them, “This kind can come forth with nothing except with prayer and fasting.”
9:30And going forth from there, they passed through Galilee, and He did not wish anyone to know,
9:31For He was teaching His disciples, and He said to them, “The Son of Man is being delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and having been killed, on the third day He will rise.”
9:32But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask Him.
9:33And He came to Capernaum; and when He was in the house, He asked them, “What were you discussing among yourselves on the way?”
9:34But they were silent, for on the way they had disputed with one another who was greatest.
9:35And sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he will be last of all and servant of all.”
9:36And taking a child, He set him in their midst; and taking him in His arms, He said to them,
9:37“Whoever receives one such child in My Name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”
9:38And John answered Him, saying, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your Name, who does not follow us; and we forbade him, because he does not follow us.”
9:39And Jesus said, “Do not forbid him, for no one who does a mighty work in My Name will soon be able to speak evil of Me;
9:40For he who is not against us is for us;
9:41For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My Name, because you belong to the Anointed One, truly I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.
9:42And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea.
9:43And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than to have two hands and go into the Valley of Hinnom, into the unquenchable fire—
9:44Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
9:45And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life lame than to have two feet and be cast into the Valley of Hinnom, into the unquenchable fire—
9:46Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
9:47And if your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out. It is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery Valley of Hinnom—
9:48Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched;
9:49For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be salted with salt.
9:50Salt is good; but if the salt loses its saltiness, with what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another.”

Chapter 10

10:1And He arose from there and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan; and again crowds gathered together to Him, and as He was accustomed, He again taught them.
10:2And the Pharisees came near and asked Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife, testing Him.
10:3And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?”
10:4And they said, “Moses permitted a certificate of divorce to be written and her to be sent away.”
10:5And Jesus answered and said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this commandment.
10:6But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
10:7For this cause a man will leave his father and mother and cling to his wife,
10:8And the two will become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.
10:9Therefore what God joined together, let no man separate.”
10:10And in the house His disciples again asked Him about the same matter,
10:11And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her;
10:12And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
10:13And they were bringing children to Him, that He might touch them; and the disciples rebuked those who brought them.
10:14But Jesus, seeing it, was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to Me, and do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of God.
10:15Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a child will by no means enter it.”
10:16And taking them in His arms, He laid His hands on them and blessed them.
10:17And as He was setting out on the way, one ran up, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”
10:18And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except One—God.
10:19You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery; you shall not murder; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and mother.’”
10:20And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.”
10:21And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”
10:22But he was gloomy at this word and went away sorrowful, for he had many possessions.
10:23And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have riches to enter into the kingdom of God!”
10:24And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how difficult it is for those who trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
10:25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”
10:26And they were exceedingly astonished, saying among themselves, “Who, then, can be saved?”
10:27And Jesus, looking at them, said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”
10:28And Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left all and followed You.”
10:29And Jesus answered and said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, for My sake and for the good news’ sake,
10:30Who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.
10:31And many first will be last, and the last first.”
10:32And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed, and those following were afraid. And taking the Twelve again, He began to tell them the things that were about to happen to Him:
10:33“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles,
10:34And they will mock Him, scourge Him, spit on Him, and kill Him; and on the third day He will rise again.”
10:35And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came near to Him, saying, “Teacher, we desire that You do for us whatever we may ask.”
10:36And He said to them, “What do you wish Me to do for you?”
10:37And they said to Him, “Grant us to sit, one at Your right hand and one at Your left, in Your glory.”
10:38And Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be immersed with the immersion with which I am immersed?”
10:39And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will indeed drink, and with the immersion with which I am immersed you will be immersed;
10:40But to sit at My right hand and at My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
10:41And when the ten heard, they began to be indignant with James and John.
10:42But Jesus called them near and said to them, “You know that those considered rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
10:43But it shall not be so among you; rather, whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant,
10:44And whoever of you desires to become first shall be slave of all;
10:45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
10:46And they came to Jericho. And as He was going out from Jericho with His disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road.
10:47And hearing that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
10:48And many rebuked him, that he might be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
10:49And Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; rise. He calls you.”
10:50And throwing off his garment, he rose and came to Jesus.
10:51And Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you desire Me to do for you?” And the blind man said to Him, “My Teacher, that I may see again.”
10:52And Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has saved you.” And immediately he saw again and followed Jesus on the road.

Chapter 11

11:1And when they came near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent forth two of His disciples,
11:2And said to them, “Go into the village before you, and immediately upon entering it you will find a colt tied, on which no man has ever sat. Loose it and bring it.
11:3And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.”
11:4And they went away and found the colt tied at the door outside, in the street; and they loosed it.
11:5And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?”
11:6And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded, and they let them go.
11:7And they brought the colt to Jesus, laid their garments on it, and He sat on it.
11:8And many spread their garments on the road, and others cut leafy branches from the fields and spread them on the road.
11:9And those who went before and those who followed were crying out, saying, “Save us, we pray! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!
11:10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Save us, we pray, in the highest!”
11:11And Jesus entered Jerusalem and the temple; and having looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
11:12And on the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry,
11:13And seeing in the distance a fig tree having leaves, He went to see whether perhaps He would find anything on it. And when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season of figs.
11:14And Jesus answered and said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And His disciples heard it.
11:15And they came to Jerusalem. And Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and bought in the temple; and He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves,
11:16And He did not permit anyone to carry a vessel through the temple,
11:17And He was teaching, saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”
11:18And the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him, for they feared Him, because all the crowd was astonished at His teaching.
11:19And when evening came, He went out of the city.
11:20And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots,
11:21And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Teacher, behold, the fig tree that You cursed has dried up.”
11:22And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.
11:23For truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, he will have whatever he says.
11:24Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when praying, believe that you receive them, and they will be yours.
11:25And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, that your Father who is in the heavens may also forgive you your trespasses.
11:26But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in the heavens forgive your trespasses.”
11:27And they came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, scribes, and elders came to Him,
11:28And they said to Him, “By what authority do You do these things? And who gave You this authority that You may do these things?”
11:29And Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one question. Answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things:
11:30The immersion of John—was it from Heaven or from men? Answer Me.”
11:31And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From Heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why, then, did you not believe him?’
11:32But should we say, ‘From men’?”—they feared the people, for all held John truly to be a prophet.
11:33And they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know.” And Jesus answered and said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Chapter 12

12:1And He began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard, set a hedge around it, dug a wine vat, built a tower, leased it to farmers, and went abroad.
12:2And at the proper time he sent a slave to the farmers, that he might receive from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.
12:3But they took him, beat him severely, and sent him away empty-handed.
12:4And again he sent another slave to them; and they struck him in the head with stones, treated him shamefully, and sent him away.
12:5And again he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing others.
12:6He still had one son—his beloved. At last he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
12:7But those farmers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
12:8And they took him, killed him, and cast him outside the vineyard.
12:9What, then, will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers, and give the vineyard to others.
12:10Have you not read this Writing: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone;
12:11This was from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
12:12And they sought to seize Him, but they feared the crowd, for they knew that He had spoken the parable against them. And leaving Him, they went away.
12:13And they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and Herodians, that they might ensnare Him in His words.
12:14And coming, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know that You are true and defer to no one, for You do not regard the face of men, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay tax to Caesar or not? Shall we pay, or shall we not pay?”
12:15But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you test Me? Bring Me a silver coin, that I may see it.”
12:16And they brought one. And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
12:17And Jesus answered and said to them, “Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at Him.
12:18And the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and questioned Him, saying,
12:19“Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
12:20There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying, left no offspring;
12:21And the second took her and died, leaving no offspring; and the third likewise.
12:22And the seven took her and left no offspring. Last of all, the woman also died.
12:23In the resurrection, then, when they rise, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”
12:24And Jesus answered and said to them, “Is this not why you go astray: because you know neither the Writings nor the power of God?
12:25For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in the heavens.
12:26But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
12:27He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You go greatly astray.”
12:28And one of the scribes came near and heard them disputing. Knowing that He had answered them well, he asked Him, “Which commandment is first of all?”
12:29And Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one;
12:30And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your understanding, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
12:31And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
12:32And the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken truly that God is one, and there is no other besides Him;
12:33And to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
12:34And Jesus, seeing that he answered with understanding, said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And no one dared question Him anymore.
12:35And Jesus answered and said, as He taught in the temple, “How do the scribes say that the Anointed One is the Son of David?
12:36For David himself said by the Holy Spirit, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’
12:37David himself calls Him Lord; how, then, is He his Son?” And the great crowd heard Him gladly.
12:38And in His teaching He said to them, “Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces,
12:39And the chief seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets;
12:40Who devour widows’ houses and, for a pretense, make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
12:41And Jesus sat opposite the treasury and watched how the crowd put coins into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much.
12:42And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny.
12:43And calling His disciples near, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those putting into the treasury;
12:44For they all put in out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had—all her living.”

Chapter 13

13:1And as He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see what stones and what buildings!”
13:2And Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
13:3And as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew questioned Him privately,
13:4“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things are about to be fulfilled?”
13:5And Jesus began to say to them, “Take heed that no one leads you astray.
13:6For many will come in My Name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and they will lead many astray.
13:7And when you hear of wars and reports of wars, do not be troubled. These things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
13:8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginning of birth pains.
13:9But take heed to yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them.
13:10And the good news must first be proclaimed to all the nations.
13:11And when they lead you away and deliver you up, do not be anxious beforehand about what you will speak, nor premeditate; but whatever is given to you in that hour, speak that. For it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.
13:12And brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise against parents and put them to death.
13:13And you will be hated by all because of My Name, but he who endures to the end will be saved.
13:14But when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it should not—let the reader understand—then let those in Judea flee to the mountains.
13:15Let him who is on the housetop not come down into the house, nor enter to take anything out of his house;
13:16And let him who is in the field not turn back to take his garment.
13:17But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse in those days!
13:18And pray that your flight may not be in winter.
13:19For in those days there will be tribulation such as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, nor ever will be.
13:20And unless the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh would be saved; but because of the chosen, whom He chose for Himself, He shortened the days.
13:21And then, if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Anointed One,’ or, ‘Behold, there He is,’ do not believe it.
13:22For false anointed ones and false prophets will arise and give signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen.
13:23But you—take heed. Behold, I have foretold you all things.
13:24But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,
13:25And the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
13:26And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
13:27And then He will send His angels and gather His chosen from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of heaven.
13:28Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.
13:29So also you, when you see these things coming to pass, know that it is near, at the doors.
13:30Truly I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away until all these things come to pass.
13:31Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
13:32But concerning that day or hour, no one knows—not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son—but only the Father.
13:33Take heed, watch, and pray, for you do not know when the time is.
13:34It is like a man gone abroad, who left his house, gave authority to his slaves and to each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch.
13:35Watch, therefore, for you do not know when the lord of the house comes—at evening, or at midnight, or at rooster-crowing, or in the morning—
13:36Lest he come suddenly and find you sleeping.
13:37And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!”

Chapter 14

14:1Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away, and the chief priests and scribes sought how they might seize Him by deceit and kill Him.
14:2But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”
14:3And while He was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as He reclined at table, a woman came having an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of pure nard. And breaking the jar, she poured it on His head.
14:4But some were greatly displeased within themselves and said, “Why has this ointment been wasted?
14:5For it could have been sold for more than three hundred days’ wages and given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
14:6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me.
14:7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you desire, you can do them good; but you do not always have Me.
14:8She has done what she could. She has anointed My body beforehand for burial.
14:9Truly I say to you, wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial of her.”
14:10And Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests that he might deliver Him up to them.
14:11And when they heard it, they rejoiced and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently deliver Him up.
14:12And on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You desire that we go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
14:13And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.
14:14And wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’
14:15And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared. Make ready for us there.”
14:16And His disciples went forth, came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.
14:17And when evening came, He came with the Twelve.
14:18And as they reclined and ate, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will deliver Me up.”
14:19And they began to be sorrowful and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another, “Is it I?”
14:20And He answered and said to them, “It is one of the Twelve, the one dipping with Me in the dish.
14:21The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written concerning Him; but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is delivered up! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
14:22And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”
14:23And taking the cup and giving thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
14:24And He said to them, “This is My blood of the New Covenant, which is poured out for many.
14:25Truly I say to you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”
14:26And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
14:27And Jesus said to them, “All of you will stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
14:28But after I have risen, I will go before you into Galilee.”
14:29But Peter said to Him, “Even if all stumble, yet I will not.”
14:30And Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you, today, this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
14:31But he spoke all the more vehemently, “Even if I must die with You, I will by no means deny You.” And they all said likewise.
14:32And they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
14:33And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and began to be deeply troubled and distressed.
14:34And He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”
14:35And going forward a little, He fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.
14:36And He said, “Father, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”
14:37And He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?
14:38Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
14:39And again He went away and prayed, saying the same words.
14:40And returning, He found them sleeping again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.
14:41And He came the third time and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is delivered up into the hands of sinners.
14:42Rise, let us go. Behold, he who delivers Me up has drawn near.”
14:43And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, scribes, and elders.
14:44Now he who delivered Him up had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One. Seize Him and lead Him away securely.”
14:45And coming, he immediately went near Him and said, “Teacher, Teacher!” and kissed Him.
14:46And they laid their hands on Him and seized Him.
14:47But one of those standing by drew his sword, struck the slave of the chief priest, and cut off his ear.
14:48And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs, to take Me?
14:49Daily I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But this has happened that the Writings may be fulfilled.”
14:50And they all left Him and fled.
14:51And a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth cast around his naked body; and the young men seized him.
14:52But leaving the linen cloth, he fled from them naked.
14:53And they led Jesus away to the chief priest; and all the chief priests, elders, and scribes came together.
14:54And Peter followed Him at a distance, even into the courtyard of the chief priest. And he sat with the officers and warmed himself by the fire.
14:55And the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.
14:56For many bore false testimony against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.
14:57And some rose and bore false testimony against Him, saying,
14:58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’”
14:59But even then their testimony did not agree.
14:60And the chief priest rose in the midst and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is this that these men testify against You?”
14:61But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the chief priest questioned Him and said to Him, “Are You the Anointed One, the Son of the Blessed One?”
14:62And Jesus said, “I AM. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
14:63And the chief priest tore his garments and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses?
14:64You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” And they all condemned Him as worthy of death.
14:65And some began to spit on Him, cover His face, strike Him with their fists, and say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.
14:66And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the maids of the chief priest came.
14:67And seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.”
14:68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out to the porch, and a rooster crowed.
14:69And the maid saw him again and began to say to those standing by, “This is one of them.”
14:70But he denied it again. And after a little while, those standing by again said to Peter, “Truly you are one of them, for you are also a Galilean, and your speech is alike.”
14:71But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!”
14:72And a second time a rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the word Jesus had said to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought on it, he wept.

Chapter 15

15:1And immediately in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders, scribes, and the whole council. And binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.
15:2And Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And answering, He said to him, “You say it.”
15:3And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.
15:4And Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!”
15:5But Jesus answered nothing further, so that Pilate marveled.
15:6Now at every feast he released to them one prisoner, whomever they asked for.
15:7And there was one named Barabbas, bound with his fellow insurrectionists, who had committed murder in the insurrection.
15:8And the crowd cried out and began to ask him to do as he had always done for them.
15:9And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you desire that I release to you the King of the Jews?”
15:10For he knew that the chief priests had delivered Him up because of envy.
15:11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, that he might release Barabbas to them instead.
15:12And Pilate answered and again said to them, “What, then, do you desire that I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”
15:13And they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”
15:14And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”
15:15And Pilate, desiring to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and after scourging Jesus, he delivered Him up to be crucified.
15:16And the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard, which is the governor’s headquarters, and called together the whole cohort.
15:17And they clothed Him in purple, and twisting a crown of thorns, they placed it on Him.
15:18And they began to greet Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
15:19And they struck Him on the head with a reed, spat on Him, and bending the knee, bowed before Him.
15:20And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him and clothed Him in His own garments. And they led Him out to crucify Him.
15:21And they compelled a certain man passing by—Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus—to carry His cross.
15:22And they brought Him to the place called Golgotha, which is translated, “Place of the Skull.”
15:23And they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.
15:24And having crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what each should take.
15:25And it was the third hour when they crucified Him.
15:26And the inscription of the accusation against Him was written above: “THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
15:27And with Him they crucified two robbers, one at His right hand and one at His left.
15:28And the Writing was fulfilled that says, “And He was numbered with lawless ones.”
15:29And those passing by reviled Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,
15:30Save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”
15:31Likewise also the chief priests, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.
15:32Let the Anointed One, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” And those crucified with Him reproached Him.
15:33And when the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.
15:34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
15:35And some of those standing by, hearing it, said, “Behold, He calls Elijah.”
15:36And one ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave it to Him to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see whether Elijah comes to take Him down.”
15:37And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed His last.
15:38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
15:39And when the captain of a hundred who stood opposite Him saw that He had breathed His last in this way, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”
15:40And there were also women watching from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome,
15:41Who also, when He was in Galilee, followed Him and ministered to Him; and many other women who had come up with Him to Jerusalem.
15:42And when evening had come, because it was the Preparation—that is, the day before the Sabbath—
15:43Joseph of Arimathea, an honorable council member, who himself also was waiting for the Kingdom of God, came and boldly entered before Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
15:44And Pilate marveled that He was already dead. And calling the captain of a hundred near, he asked him whether He had been dead for some time.
15:45And when he learned it from the captain of a hundred, he granted the body to Joseph.
15:46And he bought fine linen, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen, and laid Him in a tomb that had been hewn out of rock. And he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
15:47And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses watched where He was laid.

Chapter 16

16:1And when the Sabbath had passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him.
16:2And very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb at the rising of the sun.
16:3And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb for us?”
16:4And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large.
16:5And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right, clothed in a long white robe; and they were amazed.
16:6But he said to them, “Do not be amazed. You seek Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen; He is not here. Behold the place where they laid Him.
16:7But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.’”
16:8And they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for trembling and amazement had seized them. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
16:9Now having risen early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.
16:10She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept.
16:11And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.
16:12And after these things, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked into the country.
16:13And they went and told the rest, but neither did they believe them.
16:14Afterward He appeared to the Eleven as they reclined at table, and reproached their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen.
16:15And He said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to all creation.
16:16He who believes and is immersed will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.
16:17And these signs will accompany those who believe: in My Name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
16:18they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will be well.”
16:19So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into Heaven and sat at the right hand of God.
16:20And they went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. So be it.
