Chapter 1

1:1And the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they came out of the land of Egypt, saying,

1:2“Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names—every male, head by head.

1:3From twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their divisions.

1:4And with you there shall be a man from each tribe, each one a head of the house of his fathers.

1:5And these are the names of the men who shall stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;

1:6for Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;

1:7for Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;

1:8for Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar;

1:9for Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon;

1:10for the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;

1:11for Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni;

1:12for Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;

1:13for Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran;

1:14for Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;

1:15for Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.”

1:16These were the men summoned from the congregation, leaders of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

1:17Then Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,

1:18and they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month. And they registered themselves by genealogy, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head,

1:19as the LORD had commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

1:20Now the sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:21those numbered of the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand and five hundred.

1:22Of the sons of Simeon—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, those numbered according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:23those numbered of the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand and three hundred.

1:24Of the sons of Gad—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:25those numbered of the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand and six hundred and fifty.

1:26Of the sons of Judah—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:27those numbered of the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand and six hundred.

1:28Of the sons of Issachar—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:29those numbered of the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand and four hundred.

1:30Of the sons of Zebulun—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:31those numbered of the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand and four hundred.

1:32Of the sons of Joseph: of the sons of Ephraim—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:33those numbered of the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand and five hundred.

1:34Of the sons of Manasseh—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:35those numbered of the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand and two hundred.

1:36Of the sons of Benjamin—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:37those numbered of the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand and four hundred.

1:38Of the sons of Dan—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:39those numbered of the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand and seven hundred.

1:40Of the sons of Asher—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:41those numbered of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand and five hundred.

1:42Of the sons of Naphtali—their genealogical registration, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war—

1:43those numbered of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

1:44These were those whom Moses and Aaron numbered, together with the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing the house of his fathers.

1:45So all those numbered of the sons of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war in Israel—

1:46all those numbered were six hundred and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

1:47But the Levites, by the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them,

1:48for the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

1:49“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor shall you take their census among the sons of Israel.

1:50But you shall appoint the Levites over the Dwelling Place of the Testimony, over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the Dwelling Place and all its furnishings; they shall attend to it and encamp around the Dwelling Place.

1:51And when the Dwelling Place sets out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the Dwelling Place encamps, the Levites shall set it up. And the unauthorized person who comes near shall be put to death.”

1:52And the sons of Israel shall encamp, each in his own camp and each by his own standard, according to their divisions.

1:53But the Levites shall encamp around the Dwelling Place of the Testimony, so that there may be no wrath against the congregation of the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the Dwelling Place of the Testimony.

1:54Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so they did.

Chapter 2

2:1And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

2:2“The sons of Israel shall encamp, each by his own standard, with the banners of the house of their fathers; at a distance around the Tent of Meeting they shall encamp.”

2:3And those encamping eastward, toward the sunrise, shall be under the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their divisions; and the leader of the sons of Judah shall be Nahshon son of Amminadab.

2:4His division, those numbered of it, shall be seventy-four thousand and six hundred.

2:5And those encamping beside him shall be of the tribe of Issachar; and the leader of the sons of Issachar shall be Nethanel son of Zuar.

2:6His division, those numbered of it, shall be fifty-four thousand and four hundred.

2:7Then the tribe of Zebulun; and the leader of the sons of Zebulun shall be Eliab son of Helon.

2:8His division, those numbered of it, shall be fifty-seven thousand and four hundred.

2:9All those numbered of the camp of Judah shall be one hundred and eighty-six thousand and four hundred, according to their divisions; they shall set out first.

2:10The standard of the camp of Reuben shall be on the south side, according to their divisions; and the leader of the sons of Reuben shall be Elizur son of Shedeur.

2:11His division, those numbered of it, shall be forty-six thousand and five hundred.

2:12And those encamping beside him shall be of the tribe of Simeon; and the leader of the sons of Simeon shall be Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

2:13His division, those numbered of it, shall be fifty-nine thousand and three hundred.

2:14Then the tribe of Gad; and the leader of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph son of Deuel.

2:15His division, those numbered of it, shall be forty-five thousand and six hundred and fifty.

2:16All those numbered of the camp of Reuben shall be one hundred and fifty-one thousand and four hundred and fifty, according to their divisions; they shall set out second.

2:17Then the Tent of Meeting shall set out with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps. As they encamp, so they shall set out, each in his place, by their standards.

2:18The standard of the camp of Ephraim shall be on the west side, according to their divisions; and the leader of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama son of Ammihud.

2:19His division, those numbered of it, shall be forty thousand and five hundred.

2:20And beside him shall be the tribe of Manasseh; and the leader of the sons of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

2:21His division, those numbered of it, shall be thirty-two thousand and two hundred.

2:22Then the tribe of Benjamin; and the leader of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan son of Gideoni.

2:23His division, those numbered of it, shall be thirty-five thousand and four hundred.

2:24All those numbered of the camp of Ephraim shall be one hundred and eight thousand and one hundred, according to their divisions; they shall set out third.

2:25The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north side, according to their divisions; and the leader of the sons of Dan shall be Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

2:26His division, those numbered of it, shall be sixty-two thousand and seven hundred.

2:27And those encamping beside him shall be of the tribe of Asher; and the leader of the sons of Asher shall be Pagiel son of Ocran.

2:28His division, those numbered of it, shall be forty-one thousand and five hundred.

2:29Then the tribe of Naphtali; and the leader of the sons of Naphtali shall be Ahira son of Enan.

2:30His division, those numbered of it, shall be fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

2:31All those numbered of the camp of Dan shall be one hundred and fifty-seven thousand and six hundred; they shall set out last, by their standards.

2:32These are those numbered of the sons of Israel by the house of their fathers; all those numbered of the camps according to their divisions were six hundred and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

2:33But the Levites were not numbered among the sons of Israel, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

2:34Thus the sons of Israel did according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses; so they encamped by their standards, and so they set out, each by his clans, by the house of his fathers.

Chapter 3

3:1Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.

3:2And these were the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

3:3These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests.

3:4But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they presented unauthorized fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai. They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the presence of Aaron their father.

3:5And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

3:6“Bring the tribe of Levi near and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.

3:7They shall keep his charge and the charge of the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, performing the service of the Dwelling Place.

3:8They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting and fulfill the charge of the sons of Israel by performing the service of the Dwelling Place.

3:9And you shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the sons of Israel.

3:10And you shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood; but any unauthorized person who comes near shall be put to death.”

3:11And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

3:12“Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel in place of every firstborn who opens the womb among the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall be Mine.

3:13For every firstborn is Mine. On the day when I struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated to Myself every firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They shall be Mine; I am the LORD.”

3:14And the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,

3:15“Number the sons of Levi by their fathers’ houses, by their families; number every male from one month old and upward.”

3:16So Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, as he had been commanded.

3:17And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

3:18And these were the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.

3:19And the sons of Kohath by their families were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

3:20And the sons of Merari by their families were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites by their fathers’ houses.

3:21Of Gershon were the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites; these were the families of the Gershonites.

3:22Those numbered of them, every male from one month old and upward, were seven thousand five hundred.

3:23The families of the Gershonites shall encamp westward, behind the Dwelling Place.

3:24And the leader of the fathers’ house of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael.

3:25And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting was the Dwelling Place, the tent with its covering, the screen for the entrance of the Tent of Meeting,

3:26the hangings of the court, the screen for the entrance of the court around the Dwelling Place and the altar, and its cords—all the service connected with these.

3:27And of Kohath were the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.

3:28The number of all the males from one month old and upward was eight thousand six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.

3:29The families of the sons of Kohath shall encamp southward, beside the Dwelling Place.

3:30And the leader of the fathers’ house of the families of the Kohathites was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.

3:31And their charge was the Ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, the veil, and all the service connected with these.

3:32And Eleazar son of Aaron the priest was chief over the leaders of the Levites, with oversight of those who kept the charge of the sanctuary.

3:33Of Merari were the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.

3:34Those numbered of them, all the males from one month old and upward, were six thousand two hundred.

3:35And the leader of the fathers’ house of the families of Merari was Zuriel son of Abihail; they shall encamp northward, beside the Dwelling Place.

3:36And the appointed charge of the sons of Merari was the frames of the Dwelling Place, its bars, its pillars, its bases, all its equipment, and all the service connected with these,

3:37and the pillars of the court all around, with their bases, pegs, and cords.

3:38And those who encamped before the Dwelling Place eastward, before the Tent of Meeting toward the sunrise, were Moses and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary on behalf of the sons of Israel; but any unauthorized person who came near was to be put to death.

3:39All those numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered by the command of the LORD, by their families, every male from one month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand.

3:40Then the LORD said to Moses, “Number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from one month old and upward, and take the number of their names.

3:41And you shall take the Levites for Me—I am the LORD—in place of every firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of every firstborn among the livestock of the sons of Israel.”

3:42So Moses numbered all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, as the LORD had commanded him.

3:43And all the firstborn males, numbered by name from one month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.

3:44And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

3:45“Take the Levites in place of every firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock; and the Levites shall be Mine. I am the LORD.

3:46And for the redemption of the two hundred and seventy-three firstborn of the sons of Israel who exceed the number of the Levites,

3:47you shall take five shekels apiece, per head; you shall take it according to the sanctuary shekel—the shekel is twenty gerahs.

3:48And you shall give the money to Aaron and to his sons as the redemption price for those who exceed their number.”

3:49So Moses took the redemption money from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites.

3:50From the firstborn of the sons of Israel he took the money—one thousand three hundred and sixty-five shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel.

3:51And Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and to his sons according to the word of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Chapter 4

4:1And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

4:2“Take a census of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ houses,

4:3from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who enters the service to do work in the Tent of Meeting.

4:4This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the Tent of Meeting, concerning the most holy things:

4:5When the camp sets out, Aaron and his sons shall go in, take down the shielding veil, and cover the Ark of the Testimony with it.

4:6Then they shall put a covering of fine leather over it, spread over it a garment wholly of blue, and place its poles.

4:7And over the table of the Presence they shall spread a garment of blue and put upon it the dishes, pans, pitchers, and bowls for the drink offering; and the continual bread shall be upon it.

4:8Then they shall spread over them a garment of scarlet, cover it with a covering of fine leather, and place its poles.

4:9And they shall take a garment of blue and cover the lampstand for the light, with its lamps, wick tongs, trays, and all its oil vessels with which they minister to it.

4:10Then they shall put it and all its utensils within a covering of fine leather and place it upon the carrying frame.

4:11And over the gold altar they shall spread a garment of blue, cover it with a covering of fine leather, and place its poles.

4:12And they shall take all the utensils of ministry with which they minister in the sanctuary, put them within a garment of blue, cover them with a covering of fine leather, and place them upon the carrying frame.

4:13And they shall clear away the ashes from the altar and spread a garment of purple over it.

4:14Then they shall put upon it all its utensils with which they minister at it—the firepans, forks, shovels, and basins, all the utensils of the altar—spread over it a covering of fine leather, and place its poles.

4:15And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, as the camp sets out, afterward the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them. But they shall not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the burdens of the sons of Kohath in the Tent of Meeting.

4:16And the oversight of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest shall be the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the continual grain offering, and the anointing oil—the oversight of the whole Dwelling Place and all that is in it, the sanctuary and its furnishings.”

4:17And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

4:18“Do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites.

4:19But do this for them, that they may live and not die when they draw near to the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and assign each man to his service and to his burden.

4:20But they shall not go in to look upon the holy things as they are covered, lest they die.”

4:21And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

4:22“Also take a census of the sons of Gershon, by their fathers’ houses, by their families.

4:23From thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, you shall number them—everyone who enters the service to perform work in the Tent of Meeting.

4:24This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and bearing burdens:

4:25They shall carry the curtains of the Dwelling Place and the Tent of Meeting with its covering, the covering of fine leather that is over it, and the screen for the entrance of the Tent of Meeting,

4:26the hangings of the court, the screen for the gate of the court around the Dwelling Place and the altar, their cords, all the utensils of their service, and all that is to be done with them. Thus they shall serve.

4:27At the command of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens and all their service; and you shall assign to their charge everything they must carry.

4:28This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the Tent of Meeting, and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.

4:29As for the sons of Merari, you shall number them by their families, by their fathers’ houses.

4:30From thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, you shall number them—everyone who enters the service to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting.

4:31And this shall be the charge of the burdens for all their service in the Tent of Meeting: the frames of the Dwelling Place, its bars, pillars, and bases,

4:32the pillars of the court all around, with their bases, pegs, and cords, all their equipment and all their service; and you shall list by name the articles they are charged to carry.

4:33This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, for all their service in the Tent of Meeting, under the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.”

4:34So Moses and Aaron and the leaders of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families and by their fathers’ houses,

4:35from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the Tent of Meeting.

4:36And those numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.

4:37These were those numbered of the families of the Kohathites, everyone who served in the Tent of Meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the command of the LORD through Moses.

4:38And those numbered of the sons of Gershon, by their families and by their fathers’ houses,

4:39from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the Tent of Meeting—

4:40those numbered of them by their families, by their fathers’ houses, were two thousand six hundred and thirty.

4:41These were those numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, everyone who served in the Tent of Meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the command of the LORD.

4:42And those numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers’ houses,

4:43from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the Tent of Meeting—

4:44those numbered of them by their families were three thousand two hundred.

4:45These were those numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the command of the LORD through Moses.

4:46All those numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the leaders of Israel numbered by their families and by their fathers’ houses,

4:47from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who entered to perform the work of service and the work of bearing burdens in the Tent of Meeting—

4:48those numbered of them were eight thousand five hundred and eighty.

4:49According to the command of the LORD through Moses, each man was assigned his service and his burden; thus they were numbered, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Chapter 5

5:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

5:2“Command the sons of Israel to send out of the camp everyone with a skin disease, everyone with a discharge, and everyone unclean through contact with a dead body.

5:3You shall send out both male and female; you shall send them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camps, in whose midst I dwell.”

5:4And the sons of Israel did so and sent them outside the camp; as the LORD had spoken to Moses, so the sons of Israel did.

5:5And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

5:6“Speak to the sons of Israel: When a man or woman commits any human sin, acting unfaithfully against the LORD, and that person becomes guilty,

5:7then that person shall confess the sin committed, make restitution in full for the wrong, add one-fifth to it, and give it to the one wronged.

5:8But if the wronged person has no relative to whom restitution may be made, the restitution belongs to the LORD for the priest, besides the ram of atonement by which the priest makes atonement for him.

5:9And every contribution from all the holy things of the sons of Israel that they present to the priest shall belong to him.

5:10Each man’s holy things shall be his; whatever any man gives to the priest shall belong to him.”

5:11And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

5:12“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them: If any man’s wife goes astray and acts unfaithfully against him,

5:13and a man lies with her sexually, but it is hidden from the eyes of her husband and remains undiscovered, though she has defiled herself, and there is no witness against her and she was not caught—

5:14and a spirit of jealousy comes over him, and he is jealous for his wife, and she has defiled herself; or a spirit of jealousy comes over him, and he is jealous for his wife, though she has not defiled herself—

5:15then the man shall bring his wife to the priest and bring her offering for her: one-tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He shall pour no oil upon it and put no frankincense upon it, for it is a grain offering of jealousy, a memorial grain offering bringing iniquity to remembrance.

5:16And the priest shall bring her near and cause her to stand before the LORD.

5:17And the priest shall take holy water in an earthenware vessel; and the priest shall take some of the dust that is on the floor of the Dwelling Place and put it into the water.

5:18Then the priest shall cause the woman to stand before the LORD, loosen the woman’s hair, and place in her hands the memorial grain offering, which is the grain offering of jealousy; and in the priest’s hand shall be the bitter water that brings the curse.

5:19And the priest shall put her under oath and say to the woman, “If no man has lain with you, and if you have not gone astray into uncleanness while married to your husband, be free from this bitter water that brings the curse.

5:20But if you have gone astray while married to your husband, and if you have defiled yourself, and a man other than your husband has lain with you”—

5:21then the priest shall put the woman under the oath of the curse and say to the woman—“May the LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh waste away and your belly swell.

5:22May this water that brings the curse enter your inward parts, causing your belly to swell and your thigh to waste away.” And the woman shall say, “So be it, so be it.”

5:23Then the priest shall write these curses in a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water.

5:24And he shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter her and produce bitterness.

5:25Then the priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy from the woman’s hand, wave the grain offering before the LORD, and present it at the altar.

5:26And the priest shall take a handful of the grain offering as its memorial portion and burn it on the altar; and afterward he shall make the woman drink the water.

5:27And when he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and acted unfaithfully against her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter her and produce bitterness; her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall waste away, and the woman shall become a curse among her people.

5:28But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be free from guilt and shall conceive children.

5:29This is the law of jealousy, when a wife goes astray while married to her husband and defiles herself,

5:30or when a spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous for his wife. He shall cause the woman to stand before the LORD, and the priest shall carry out all this law upon her.

5:31And the man shall be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her guilt.”

Chapter 6

6:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

6:2“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them: When a man or woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to be set apart to the LORD,

6:3he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink. He shall drink no vinegar made from wine or strong drink, drink no grape juice, and eat no fresh or dried grapes.

6:4All the days of his separation he shall eat nothing made from the grapevine, from the seeds even to the skin.

6:5All the days of his vow of separation no razor shall pass over his head. Until the days are fulfilled for which he separates himself to the LORD, he shall be holy; he shall let the hair of his head grow long.

6:6All the days that he separates himself to the LORD, he shall not go near a dead body.

6:7He shall not make himself unclean even for his father or his mother, his brother or his sister, when they die, for his separation to God is upon his head.

6:8All the days of his separation he is holy to the LORD.

6:9And if someone dies suddenly beside him, defiling his consecrated head, then he shall shave his head on the day of his cleansing; on the seventh day he shall shave it.

6:10And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

6:11And the priest shall prepare one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, and make atonement for him because of the dead body. And he shall consecrate his head that same day.

6:12And he shall separate to the LORD the days of his Nazirite vow and bring a year-old male lamb as a guilt offering; but the former days shall be forfeited because his separation was defiled.

6:13And this is the law of the Nazirite: when the days of his separation are fulfilled, he shall be brought to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting,

6:14and he shall present his offering to the LORD: one unblemished year-old male lamb as a burnt offering, one unblemished year-old female lamb as a sin offering, and one unblemished ram for peace offerings,

6:15and a basket of unleavened bread made of fine flour—cakes mixed with oil and thin unleavened cakes anointed with oil—with their grain offering and their drink offerings.

6:16And the priest shall present them before the LORD and prepare his sin offering and his burnt offering.

6:17And he shall prepare the ram as a sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD, together with the basket of unleavened bread; and the priest shall prepare its grain offering and its drink offering.

6:18Then the Nazirite shall shave his consecrated head at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, take the hair from his consecrated head, and put it on the fire under the sacrifice of the peace offerings.

6:19And the priest shall take the boiled shoulder of the ram, one unleavened cake from the basket, and one thin unleavened cake, and put them upon the palms of the Nazirite after he has shaved his consecrated head.

6:20And the priest shall wave them as a wave offering before the LORD. They are holy for the priest, together with the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution; and afterward the Nazirite may drink wine.

6:21This is the law of the Nazirite who vows his offering to the LORD for his separation, besides whatever else he can afford. According to the vow he makes, so he shall do, in keeping with the law of his separation.”

6:22And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

6:23“Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying: Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel, saying to them:

6:24The LORD bless you and keep you;

6:25The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;

6:26The LORD lift up His face upon you and give you peace.

6:27So they shall put My Name upon the sons of Israel, and I will bless them.”

Chapter 7

7:1And on the day when Moses finished setting up the Dwelling Place, he anointed and consecrated it and all its furnishings, and the altar and all its utensils; he anointed and consecrated them.

7:2Then the leaders of Israel, the heads of their fathers’ houses—the leaders of the tribes who presided over those numbered—presented offerings.

7:3And they brought their offering before the LORD: six covered carts and twelve oxen, one cart from every two leaders and one ox from each; and they presented them before the Dwelling Place.

7:4Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

7:5“Accept these from them, that they may be used in the service of the Tent of Meeting; and give them to the Levites, to each according to his service.”

7:6So Moses took the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Levites.

7:7He gave two carts and four oxen to the sons of Gershon, according to their service,

7:8and four carts and eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, according to their service, under the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.

7:9But to the sons of Kohath he gave none, because the service of the holy things was upon them; they carried them on their shoulders.

7:10And the leaders presented their offerings for the dedication of the altar on the day it was anointed; the leaders presented their offerings before the altar.

7:11Then the LORD said to Moses, “Each leader on his day shall present his offering for the dedication of the altar.”

7:12And the one who presented his offering on the first day was Nahshon son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah.

7:13His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:14one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:15one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:16one male goat as a sin offering;

7:17and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Nahshon son of Amminadab.

7:18On the second day Nethanel son of Zuar, leader of Issachar, presented his offering.

7:19He presented as his offering one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:20one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:21one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:22one male goat as a sin offering;

7:23and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Nethanel son of Zuar.

7:24On the third day, Eliab son of Helon, leader of the sons of Zebulun, presented his offering.

7:25His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:26one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:27one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:28one male goat as a sin offering;

7:29and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Eliab son of Helon.

7:30On the fourth day, Elizur son of Shedeur, leader of the sons of Reuben, presented his offering.

7:31His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:32one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:33one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:34one male goat as a sin offering;

7:35and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Elizur son of Shedeur.

7:36On the fifth day, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai, leader of the sons of Simeon, presented his offering.

7:37His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:38one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:39one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:40one male goat as a sin offering;

7:41and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

7:42On the sixth day, Eliasaph son of Deuel, leader of the sons of Gad, presented his offering.

7:43His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:44one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:45one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:46one male goat as a sin offering;

7:47and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Eliasaph son of Deuel.

7:48On the seventh day, Elishama son of Ammihud, leader of the sons of Ephraim, presented his offering.

7:49His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:50one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:51one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:52one male goat as a sin offering;

7:53and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Elishama son of Ammihud.

7:54On the eighth day, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur, leader of the sons of Manasseh, presented his offering.

7:55His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:56one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:57one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:58one male goat as a sin offering;

7:59and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

7:60On the ninth day, Abidan son of Gideoni, leader of the sons of Benjamin, presented his offering.

7:61His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:62one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:63one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:64one male goat as a sin offering;

7:65and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Abidan son of Gideoni.

7:66On the tenth day, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai, leader of the sons of Dan, presented his offering.

7:67His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:68one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:69one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:70one male goat as a sin offering;

7:71and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

7:72On the eleventh day, Pagiel son of Ocran, leader of the sons of Asher, presented his offering.

7:73His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:74one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:75one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:76one male goat as a sin offering;

7:77and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Pagiel son of Ocran.

7:78On the twelfth day, Ahira son of Enan, leader of the sons of Naphtali, presented his offering.

7:79His offering was one silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

7:80one gold pan weighing ten shekels, full of incense;

7:81one young bull, one ram, and one year-old male lamb as a burnt offering;

7:82one male goat as a sin offering;

7:83and as a sacrifice of peace offerings, two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five year-old male lambs. This was the offering of Ahira son of Enan.

7:84This was the dedication of the altar on the day it was anointed by the leaders of Israel: twelve silver dishes, twelve silver bowls, and twelve gold pans.

7:85Each silver dish weighed one hundred and thirty shekels, and each bowl seventy; all the silver of the vessels was two thousand four hundred shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel.

7:86The twelve gold pans full of incense weighed ten shekels each, according to the sanctuary shekel; all the gold of the pans was one hundred and twenty shekels.

7:87All the cattle for the burnt offering were twelve bulls, with twelve rams, twelve year-old male lambs and their grain offerings, and twelve male goats as a sin offering.

7:88And all the cattle for the sacrifice of peace offering were twenty-four bulls, sixty rams, sixty male goats, and sixty year-old male lambs. This was the dedication of the altar on the day it was anointed.

7:89And when Moses entered the Tent of Meeting to speak with Him, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the atonement cover that was upon the Ark of the Testimony, from between the two winged guardians; and He spoke to him.

Chapter 8

8:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

8:2“Speak to Aaron and say to him: When you set up the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light toward the front of the lampstand.”

8:3And Aaron did so; he set up its lamps to give light toward the front of the lampstand, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

8:4And this was the workmanship of the lampstand: hammered work of gold; from its base to its flowers, it was hammered work. According to the pattern which the LORD had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.

8:5And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

8:6“Take the Levites from among the sons of Israel and cleanse them.

8:7And thus you shall do to them to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of purification upon them; let them pass a razor over all their body, wash their garments, and cleanse themselves.

8:8Then they shall take a young bull with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil; and you shall take a second young bull for a sin offering.

8:9And you shall bring the Levites before the Tent of Meeting and assemble the whole congregation of the sons of Israel.

8:10And you shall bring the Levites before the LORD, and the sons of Israel shall lay their hands upon the Levites.

8:11And Aaron shall present the Levites as a wave offering before the LORD from among the sons of Israel, that they may perform the service of the LORD.

8:12Then the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bulls; and you shall offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the LORD, to make atonement for the Levites.

8:13And you shall cause the Levites to stand before Aaron and before his sons, and present them as a wave offering to the LORD.

8:14Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the sons of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine.

8:15And afterward the Levites shall go in to serve at the Tent of Meeting. You shall cleanse them and present them as a wave offering,

8:16for they are wholly given to Me from among the sons of Israel. In place of every firstborn, the first to open any womb among the sons of Israel, I have taken them for Myself.

8:17For every firstborn among the sons of Israel is Mine, both man and beast. On the day when I struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated them for Myself.

8:18And I have taken the Levites in place of every firstborn among the sons of Israel.

8:19And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the sons of Israel, to perform the service of the sons of Israel at the Tent of Meeting and to make atonement for the sons of Israel, so that no plague may come upon the sons of Israel when they draw near to the holy place.”

8:20And Moses and Aaron and the whole congregation of the sons of Israel did to the Levites according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites; so the sons of Israel did to them.

8:21And the Levites cleansed themselves and washed their garments; and Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the LORD, and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them.

8:22And afterward the Levites went in to perform their service at the Tent of Meeting before Aaron and before his sons. As the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.

8:23And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

8:24“This is what applies to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward, a man shall enter the service at the Tent of Meeting;

8:25and from fifty years old he shall retire from the service and shall serve no more.

8:26He may assist his brothers at the Tent of Meeting in keeping the charge, but he shall perform no service. Thus you shall do concerning the Levites and their charges.”

Chapter 9

9:1And the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

9:2“Let the sons of Israel keep the Passover at its appointed time.

9:3On the fourteenth day of this month, at twilight, you shall keep it at its appointed time; according to all its statutes and according to all its ordinances you shall keep it.”

9:4And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, that they should keep the Passover.

9:5And they kept the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai. According to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did.

9:6But there were men who were unclean through contact with a dead body, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day; and they drew near before Moses and before Aaron on that day.

9:7And those men said to him, “We are unclean through contact with a dead body. Why should we be kept from presenting the offering of the LORD at its appointed time among the sons of Israel?”

9:8And Moses said to them, “Wait, and I will hear what the LORD commands concerning you.”

9:9And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

9:10“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: If any man among you or your generations is unclean through contact with a dead body, or is on a distant journey, he shall still keep the Passover to the LORD.

9:11In the second month, on the fourteenth day, at twilight, they shall keep it; they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

9:12They shall leave none of it until morning, nor break any bone of it. According to every statute of the Passover they shall keep it.

9:13But the man who is clean and is not on a journey, yet fails to keep the Passover, that person shall be cut off from his people, because he did not present the offering of the LORD at its appointed time. That man shall bear his sin.

9:14And when a sojourner sojourns among you and keeps the Passover to the LORD, according to the statute of the Passover and according to its ordinance, so shall he do. You shall have one statute, both for the sojourner and for the native of the land.”

9:15And on the day when the Dwelling Place was set up, the cloud covered the Dwelling Place, the Tent of the Testimony; and from evening until morning it was over the Dwelling Place like the appearance of fire.

9:16So it was continually: the cloud covered it, and by night there was the appearance of fire.

9:17And whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent, afterward the sons of Israel journeyed; and in the place where the cloud settled, there the sons of Israel encamped.

9:18At the command of the LORD the sons of Israel journeyed, and at the command of the LORD they encamped. All the days that the cloud rested over the Dwelling Place, they remained encamped.

9:19And when the cloud remained over the Dwelling Place many days, the sons of Israel kept the charge of the LORD and did not journey.

9:20And sometimes the cloud remained over the Dwelling Place only a few days. At the command of the LORD they encamped, and at the command of the LORD they journeyed.

9:21And sometimes the cloud remained from evening until morning; when the cloud was lifted in the morning, they journeyed. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud was lifted, they journeyed.

9:22Whether two days, or a month, or a year, as long as the cloud remained over the Dwelling Place, resting upon it, the sons of Israel remained encamped and did not journey; but when it was lifted, they journeyed.

9:23At the command of the LORD they encamped, and at the command of the LORD they journeyed. They kept the charge of the LORD at the command of the LORD through Moses.

Chapter 10

10:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

10:2“Make for yourself two silver trumpets; you shall make them of hammered work. They shall be for summoning the congregation and for setting the camps in motion.

10:3When both are blown, the whole congregation shall assemble before you at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting.

10:4But if only one is blown, the leaders, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall assemble before you.

10:5When you sound an alarm, the camps encamped eastward shall set out.

10:6And when you sound a second alarm, the camps encamped southward shall set out. An alarm shall be sounded for their journeys.

10:7But when the assembly is gathered, you shall blow the trumpets, but you shall not sound an alarm.

10:8The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and this shall be an enduring statute for you throughout your generations.

10:9And when you go to war in your land against an adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and you shall be delivered from your enemies.

10:10Also in the day of your gladness, at your appointed feasts, and at your new moons, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be a memorial for you before your God. I am the LORD your God.”

10:11And it came to pass, in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, that the cloud was lifted from over the Dwelling Place of the Testimony.

10:12And the sons of Israel set out by stages from the wilderness of Sinai, and the cloud settled in the wilderness of Paran.

10:13Thus they set out for the first time at the command of the LORD through Moses.

10:14And the standard of the camp of the sons of Judah set out first by their divisions; and over its division was Nahshon son of Amminadab.

10:15And over the division of the tribe of the sons of Issachar was Nethanel son of Zuar.

10:16And over the division of the tribe of the sons of Zebulun was Eliab son of Helon.

10:17Then the Dwelling Place was taken down, and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set out, carrying the Dwelling Place.

10:18And the standard of the camp of Reuben set out by their divisions; and over its division was Elizur son of Shedeur.

10:19And over the division of the tribe of the sons of Simeon was Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

10:20And over the division of the tribe of the sons of Gad was Eliasaph son of Deuel.

10:21Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy things; and the Dwelling Place was set up before they arrived.

10:22And the standard of the camp of the sons of Ephraim set out by their divisions; and over its division was Elishama son of Ammihud.

10:23And over the division of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh was Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

10:24And over the division of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin was Abidan son of Gideoni.

10:25And the standard of the camp of the sons of Dan set out by their divisions, forming the rear guard of all the camps; and over its division was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

10:26And over the division of the tribe of the sons of Asher was Pagiel son of Ocran.

10:27And over the division of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali was Ahira son of Enan.

10:28These were the journeys of the sons of Israel by their divisions when they set out.

10:29And Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are journeying to the place of which the LORD said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will do good to you, for the LORD has spoken good concerning Israel.”

10:30But he said to him, “I will not go; rather, I will go to my own land and to my kindred.”

10:31And he said, “Please do not forsake us, for you know where we should encamp in the wilderness, and you can be eyes for us.

10:32And if you go with us, then whatever good the LORD does for us, we will do for you.”

10:33And they journeyed from the mountain of the LORD a journey of three days, and the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD journeyed before them for three days, to seek out a resting place for them.

10:34And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day when they set out from the camp.

10:35And whenever the Ark set out, Moses said, “Rise, O LORD, and let Your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate You flee from Your presence.”

10:36And whenever it rested, he said, “Return, O LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel.”

Chapter 11

11:1And the people complained of hardship in the hearing of the LORD; and when the LORD heard it, His anger burned, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed the outskirts of the camp.

11:2Then the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down.

11:3And he called the name of that place Taberah, because the fire of the LORD had burned among them.

11:4And the rabble who were among them were seized with craving; and the sons of Israel also wept again and said, “Who will give us flesh to eat?

11:5We remember the fish which we ate in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic;

11:6but now our appetite has dried up. There is nothing at all before our eyes except this manna.”

11:7And the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance was like the appearance of fragrant resin.

11:8The people went about and gathered it, and ground it with millstones or beat it in a mortar, and boiled it in pots and made it into cakes; and its taste was like the taste of cakes baked with oil.

11:9And when the dew fell upon the camp by night, the manna fell upon it.

11:10And Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, each man at the doorway of his tent; and the anger of the LORD burned greatly, and it was evil in the eyes of Moses.

11:11And Moses said to the LORD, “Why have You dealt badly with Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You lay the burden of all this people upon me?

11:12Did I conceive all this people? Did I beget them, that You should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing child,’ to the land which You swore to their fathers?

11:13Where am I to get flesh to give to all this people? For they weep before me, saying, ‘Give us flesh, that we may eat.’

11:14I am not able to bear all this people alone, for they are too heavy for me.

11:15And if this is how You deal with me, please kill me outright, if I have found favor in Your sight, and do not let me see my misery.”

11:16And the LORD said to Moses, “Gather to Me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you know to be elders of the people and their officers; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you.

11:17And I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the Spirit that is upon you and put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you shall not bear it alone.

11:18And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat flesh, for you have wept in the hearing of the LORD, saying, ‘Who will give us flesh to eat? For it was good for us in Egypt.’ Therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and you shall eat.

11:19You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days,

11:20but for a whole month, until it comes out from your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have rejected the LORD who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, ‘Why did we come out of Egypt?’”

11:21And Moses said, “The people among whom I am number six hundred thousand men on foot, and yet You have said, ‘I will give them flesh, that they may eat for a whole month.’

11:22Would flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, and be enough for them? Or would all the fish of the sea be gathered for them, and be enough for them?”

11:23And the LORD said to Moses, “Is the hand of the LORD shortened? Now you shall see whether My word comes true for you or not.”

11:24And Moses went out and spoke the words of the LORD to the people; and he gathered seventy men from the elders of the people and caused them to stand around the tent.

11:25And the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was upon him and put it upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, but they did not continue.

11:26But two men remained in the camp; the name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them—they were among those registered, though they had not gone out to the tent—and they prophesied in the camp.

11:27And a young man ran and told Moses, saying, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

11:28Then Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ attendant from his youth, answered and said, “My lord Moses, restrain them.”

11:29But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? O that all the LORD’s people were prophets, and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!”

11:30And Moses returned to the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

11:31Then a wind went out from the LORD and drove quail in from the sea, and let them fall beside the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and a day’s journey on that side, all around the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the ground.

11:32And the people rose all that day and all that night and all the next day, and gathered the quail. He who gathered least gathered ten homers. And they spread them out for themselves all around the camp.

11:33While the flesh was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the LORD burned against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very great plague.

11:34And he called the name of that place Kibroth-Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved.

11:35From Kibroth-Hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth, and they remained at Hazeroth.

Chapter 12

12:1And Miriam spoke, and Aaron with her, against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had taken, for he had taken a Cushite woman.

12:2And they said, “Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Has He not also spoken through us?” And the LORD heard it.

12:3Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any man who was upon the face of the ground.

12:4And suddenly the LORD said to Moses, to Aaron, and to Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the Tent of Meeting.” And the three of them came out.

12:5And the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the doorway of the tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forward.

12:6And He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.

12:7Not so with My servant Moses; he is faithful in all My house.

12:8With him I speak mouth to mouth, plainly and not in riddles; and he beholds the form of the LORD. Why, then, were you not afraid to speak against My servant, against Moses?”

12:9And the anger of the LORD burned against them, and He departed.

12:10And when the cloud departed from over the tent, behold, Miriam’s skin was diseased, white as snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam, and behold, her skin was diseased.

12:11And Aaron said to Moses, “O my lord, please do not lay this sin upon us, in which we have acted foolishly and in which we have sinned.

12:12Please do not let her be as one dead, whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.”

12:13And Moses cried to the LORD, saying, “O God, please heal her—please!”

12:14And the LORD said to Moses, “If her father had but spat in her face, would she not bear shame for seven days? Let her be shut outside the camp for seven days, and afterward she may be brought back in.”

12:15So Miriam was shut outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not journey until Miriam was brought back in.

12:16And afterward the people journeyed from Hazeroth and encamped in the wilderness of Paran.

Chapter 13

13:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

13:2“Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel. From every tribe of their fathers you shall send one man, each one a leader among them.”

13:3And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the command of the LORD; all of them were men who were heads of the sons of Israel.

13:4And these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur;

13:5from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;

13:6from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;

13:7from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;

13:8from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;

13:9from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;

13:10from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;

13:11from the tribe of Joseph, namely, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;

13:12from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;

13:13from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;

13:14from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;

13:15from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.

13:16These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun, Joshua.

13:17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up this way through the Negev, and go up into the hill country,

13:18and see what the land is like, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many;

13:19and what the land is like in which they dwell, whether good or bad; and what the cities are like in which they dwell, whether camps or fortified cities;

13:20and what the land is like, whether rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.

13:21So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, at Lebo-hamath.

13:22And they went up through the Negev and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, descendants of Anak, were there. Now Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.

13:23And they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two of them, along with some of the pomegranates and figs.

13:24That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down there.

13:25And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.

13:26And they went and came to Moses and Aaron and to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to the whole congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

13:27And they recounted to him and said, “We came to the land to which you sent us, and indeed it flows with milk and honey—and this is its fruit.

13:28Nevertheless, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very great; and we also saw the descendants of Anak there.

13:29The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negev; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the Jordan.”

13:30And Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us certainly go up and possess it, for we are certainly able to take it.”

13:31But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.”

13:32And they brought a bad report to the sons of Israel concerning the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we passed to spy it out is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.

13:33And there we saw the giants—the sons of Anak are descended from the giants—and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

Chapter 14

14:1Then the whole congregation raised their voices and cried out, and the people wept that night.

14:2And all the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “O that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or O that we had died in this wilderness!

14:3And why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword, so that our wives and our children become plunder? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?”

14:4And they said to one another, “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.”

14:5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before the whole assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israel.

14:6And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their garments.

14:7And they spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, “The land through which we passed to spy it out is an exceedingly good land.

14:8If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

14:9Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not fear the people of the land, for they are our bread. Their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them.”

14:10But the whole congregation said to stone them with stones. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the sons of Israel.

14:11And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise Me? And how long will they refuse to believe in Me, despite all the signs which I have done among them?

14:12I will strike them with pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

14:13But Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your power You brought up this people from among them,

14:14and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, O LORD, are among this people; that You, O LORD, are seen face to face, and Your cloud stands over them; and that You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

14:15Now if You put this people to death as one man, then the nations who have heard of Your fame will say,

14:16‘Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore to give them, He slaughtered them in the wilderness.’

14:17And now, please let the power of my Lord be great, as You have spoken, saying,

14:18‘The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, yet by no means leaving the guilty unpunished; visiting the iniquity of fathers upon children, to the third and the fourth generation.’

14:19Please forgive the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your steadfast love, just as You have borne with this people from Egypt even until now.”

14:20And the LORD said, “I have forgiven them according to your word.

14:21Nevertheless, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD,

14:22none of the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have tested Me these ten times and have not listened to My voice,

14:23shall see the land which I swore to their fathers. None of those who despise Me shall see it.

14:24But My servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit and followed Me fully, I will bring into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall possess it.

14:25Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley. Tomorrow turn and journey into the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds.”

14:26And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

14:27“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who grumble against Me? I have heard the complaints which the sons of Israel utter against Me.

14:28Say to them: As I live—an utterance of the LORD—surely as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you.

14:29Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness—all who were numbered among you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me.

14:30You shall not come into the land concerning which I lifted up My hand to settle you there, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

14:31But your children, whom you said would become plunder, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.

14:32But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.

14:33And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years and shall bear your unfaithfulness, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.

14:34According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land—forty days, a day for a year, a day for a year—you shall bear your iniquities for forty years, and you shall know My displeasure.

14:35I, the LORD, have spoken. Surely I will do this to all this evil congregation who have gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”

14:36And the men whom Moses had sent to spy out the land, who returned and caused the whole congregation to grumble against him by bringing a bad report concerning the land—

14:37those men who brought the bad report of the land died by the plague before the LORD.

14:38But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived, of those men who had gone to spy out the land.

14:39And Moses spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.

14:40And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Here we are, and we will go up to the place of which the LORD spoke, for we have sinned.”

14:41But Moses said, “Why are you now transgressing the command of the LORD? It will not succeed.

14:42Do not go up, for the LORD is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies.

14:43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.”

14:44But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain; nevertheless, the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD and Moses did not depart from the midst of the camp.

14:45Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down, and struck them and crushed them as far as Hormah.

Chapter 15

15:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

15:2“Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: When you come into the land of your dwellings, which I am giving you,

15:3and you prepare an offering by fire to the LORD—a burnt offering or a sacrifice, whether to fulfill a vow, as a freewill offering, or at your appointed times—to make a soothing aroma to the LORD from the herd or the flock,

15:4then the one who presents his offering to the LORD shall present a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a fourth of a hin of oil;

15:5and you shall prepare a fourth of a hin of wine for a drink offering with the burnt offering or sacrifice, for each lamb.

15:6Or for a ram you shall prepare a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a third of a hin of oil;

15:7and you shall present a third of a hin of wine for a drink offering—a soothing aroma to the LORD.

15:8And when you prepare a bull as a burnt offering or a sacrifice, whether to fulfill a vow or as a peace offering to the LORD,

15:9then with the bull one shall present a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with half a hin of oil;

15:10and you shall present half a hin of wine for a drink offering, as an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD.

15:11Thus it shall be done for each ox, each ram, each young sheep, or each goat.

15:12According to the number you prepare, so you shall do for each one, according to their number.

15:13Every native-born person shall do these things in this way when presenting an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD.

15:14And when a sojourner sojourns with you, or anyone lives among you throughout your generations, and he prepares an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD, as you do, so shall he do.

15:15One statute shall be for you of the congregation and for the sojourner who sojourns with you, an enduring statute throughout your generations; as you are, so shall the sojourner be before the LORD.

15:16One law and one ordinance shall be for you and for the sojourner who sojourns with you.”

15:17And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

15:18“Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: When you come into the land to which I am bringing you,

15:19then, when you eat of the food of the land, you shall raise up a contribution to the LORD.

15:20You shall raise up a cake from the first of your dough as a contribution; as the contribution from the threshing floor, so you shall raise it up.

15:21From the first of your dough you shall give a contribution to the LORD throughout your generations.

15:22And when you err and do not keep all these commandments which the LORD spoke to Moses—

15:23all that the LORD commanded you by Moses, from the day the LORD gave the command and onward throughout your generations—

15:24then, if it was done unintentionally and escaped the notice of the congregation, the whole congregation shall prepare one young bull as a burnt offering, for a soothing aroma to the LORD, with its grain offering and its drink offering according to the ordinance, and one male goat as a sin offering.

15:25And the priest shall make atonement for the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, and they shall be forgiven, for it was unintentional; and they have brought their offering, an offering by fire to the LORD, and their sin offering before the LORD for their unintentional sin.

15:26And the whole congregation of the sons of Israel and the sojourner who sojourns among them shall be forgiven, for all the people acted unintentionally.

15:27And if one person sins unintentionally, he shall present a female goat a year old as a sin offering.

15:28And the priest shall make atonement before the LORD for the person who errs by sinning unintentionally; when atonement has been made for him, he shall be forgiven.

15:29One law shall be for the native-born among the sons of Israel and for the sojourner who sojourns among them, for anyone who acts unintentionally.

15:30But the person who acts defiantly, whether native-born or sojourner, blasphemes the LORD; that person shall be cut off from among his people.

15:31Because he has despised the word of the LORD and broken His commandment, that person shall surely be cut off; his iniquity remains on him.”

15:32While the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day.

15:33And those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole congregation.

15:34And they placed him in custody, for it had not been made clear what should be done to him.

15:35Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man shall surely be put to death; the whole congregation shall stone him outside the camp.”

15:36And the whole congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him, and he died, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

15:37And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

15:38“Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner.

15:39It shall be a tassel for you to look upon, that you may remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them, and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you go whoring,

15:40so that you may remember and do all My commandments and be holy to your God.

15:41I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the LORD your God.”

Chapter 16

16:1Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, took men, together with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, sons of Reuben,

16:2and they rose up before Moses, together with two hundred and fifty men of the sons of Israel, leaders of the congregation, chosen from the assembly, men of renown.

16:3And they gathered themselves against Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! For the whole congregation—all of them—are holy, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”

16:4When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.

16:5And he spoke to Korah and all his company, saying, “In the morning the LORD will make known who is His and who is holy, and He will bring him near to Himself; the one whom He chooses, He will bring near to Himself.

16:6Do this: take censers for yourselves—Korah and all his company—

16:7and put fire in them, and put incense on them before the LORD tomorrow. The man whom the LORD chooses shall be holy. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!”

16:8And Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, sons of Levi:

16:9Is it too little for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself, to perform the service of the Dwelling Place of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?

16:10He has brought you near, and all your brothers, the sons of Levi, with you. Would you seek the priesthood also?

16:11Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the LORD. And Aaron—what is he, that you grumble against him?”

16:12Then Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come up!

16:13Is it too little that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to put us to death in the wilderness, that you must also make yourself a prince over us?

16:14Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Would you gouge out the eyes of these men? We will not come up!”

16:15Then Moses was very angry and said to the LORD, “Do not regard their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, nor have I harmed one of them.”

16:16And Moses said to Korah, “You and all your company, be present before the LORD tomorrow—you, they, and Aaron.

16:17Let each man take his censer and put incense on it, and each shall present his censer before the LORD—two hundred and fifty censers. You also and Aaron, each with his censer.”

16:18So each man took his censer, put fire in it, laid incense on it, and stood at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.

16:19And Korah assembled the whole congregation against them at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole congregation.

16:20And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

16:21“Separate yourselves from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.”

16:22Then they fell on their faces and said, “O God, God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will You be angry with the whole congregation?”

16:23And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

16:24“Speak to the congregation, saying, Get away from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”

16:25Then Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.

16:26And he spoke to the congregation, saying, “Turn away now from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest you be swept away in all their sins.”

16:27So they got away from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrances of their tents, with their wives, their sons, and their children.

16:28And Moses said, “By this you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works, and that they are not from my own heart:

16:29If these men die as all men die, or if the fate of all mankind comes upon them, then the LORD has not sent me.

16:30But if the LORD creates a new thing, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them and all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you shall know that these men have despised the LORD.”

16:31And as he finished speaking all these words, the ground beneath them split open.

16:32And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, all the men who belonged to Korah, and all their possessions.

16:33So they and all that belonged to them went down alive into the realm of the dead, and the earth closed over them; and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

16:34And all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us also!”

16:35And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were presenting the incense.

Chapter 17

17:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

17:2“Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to take up the censers from among the burned remains, and scatter the fire far away, for the censers are holy.

17:3As for the censers of these sinners who forfeited their lives, let them be made into hammered plates as a covering for the altar; for they presented them before the LORD, and they became holy. Thus they shall be a sign to the sons of Israel.”

17:4So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers which those who were burned had presented, and they hammered them out as a covering for the altar—

17:5a memorial to the sons of Israel, so that no unauthorized person who is not descended from Aaron should draw near to burn incense before the LORD and become like Korah and his company, as the LORD had spoken to him by Moses.

17:6But on the next day the whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have put the people of the LORD to death.”

17:7And when the congregation assembled against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the Tent of Meeting; and behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.

17:8Then Moses and Aaron came before the Tent of Meeting.

17:9And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

17:10“Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” And they fell on their faces.

17:11And Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, put fire in it from the altar, place incense on it, and go quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the presence of the LORD—the plague has begun.”

17:12So Aaron took it as Moses had said and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague had begun among the people. And he placed the incense and made atonement for the people.

17:13And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was restrained.

17:14Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the matter of Korah.

17:15Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and the plague was restrained.

17:16And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

17:17“Speak to the sons of Israel, and take from them one rod for each father’s house, from all their leaders according to their fathers’ houses—twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod.

17:18And write Aaron’s name on the rod of Levi, for there shall be one rod for the head of each father’s house.

17:19And place them in the Tent of Meeting before the Testimony, where I meet with you.

17:20And the rod of the man whom I choose shall sprout; and I will make the grumblings of the sons of Israel, which they grumble against you, cease before Me.”

17:21So Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, and all their leaders gave him one rod for each leader, according to their fathers’ houses—twelve rods; and Aaron’s rod was among their rods.

17:22And Moses placed the rods before the LORD in the Tent of the Testimony.

17:23And on the next day Moses went into the Tent of the Testimony; and behold, Aaron’s rod for the house of Levi had sprouted: it had put forth buds, produced blossoms, and borne ripe almonds.

17:24Then Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD to all the sons of Israel, and they saw them, and each man took his rod.

17:25And the LORD said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s rod back before the Testimony, to be kept as a sign to the rebels, that you may put an end to their grumblings against Me, lest they die.”

17:26Thus Moses did; as the LORD had commanded him, so he did.

17:27And the sons of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, “Behold, we perish! We are lost! All of us are lost!

17:28Everyone who even comes near the Dwelling Place of the LORD dies. Shall we all perish?”

Chapter 18

18:1Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father’s house with you shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.

18:2And bring near with you your brothers also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may be joined to you and minister to you, while you and your sons with you are before the Tent of the Testimony.

18:3They shall keep your charge and the charge of the whole tent; only they shall not come near the furnishings of the holy place or the altar, lest they die, both they and you.

18:4They shall be joined to you and keep the charge of the Tent of Meeting for all the service of the tent; no unauthorized person shall come near you.

18:5And you shall keep the charge of the holy place and the charge of the altar, so that there may be no more wrath against the sons of Israel.

18:6And I, behold, have taken your brothers the Levites from among the sons of Israel; they are a gift to you, given to the LORD, to perform the service of the Tent of Meeting.

18:7But you and your sons with you shall keep your priesthood in everything concerning the altar and within the veil, and you shall serve. I give your priesthood as a gift of service; but the unauthorized person who comes near shall be put to death.”

18:8And the LORD spoke to Aaron: “Behold, I have given you charge of My contributions, all the holy things of the sons of Israel. I have given them to you as your allotted portion, and to your sons, by an enduring statute.

18:9This shall be yours from the most holy things reserved from the fire: every offering of theirs—every grain offering, every sin offering, and every guilt offering—which they render to Me, shall be most holy for you and your sons.

18:10You shall eat it in a most holy place; every male shall eat it. It shall be holy to you.

18:11And this also is yours: the contribution of their gifts, with all the wave offerings of the sons of Israel. I have given them to you and to your sons and daughters with you by an enduring statute. Everyone in your house who is clean may eat it.

18:12All the best of the oil, all the best of the new wine and grain—their firstfruits which they give to the LORD—I have given them to you.

18:13The first ripe produce of all that is in their land, which they bring to the LORD, shall be yours. Everyone in your house who is clean may eat it.

18:14Every devoted thing in Israel shall be yours.

18:15Everything that opens the womb of all flesh, which they present to the LORD, whether man or beast, shall be yours; nevertheless, the firstborn of man you shall surely redeem, and the firstborn of unclean beasts you shall redeem.

18:16And those to be redeemed, from one month old, you shall redeem according to your valuation, for five shekels of silver by the sanctuary shekel, which is twenty gerahs.

18:17But the firstborn of an ox, the firstborn of a sheep, or the firstborn of a goat you shall not redeem; they are holy. You shall splash their blood against the altar and burn their fat as an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD.

18:18And their flesh shall be yours; as the breast of the wave offering and the right thigh are yours, so shall it be yours.

18:19All the contributions of the holy things which the sons of Israel raise up to the LORD I have given to you, and to your sons and daughters with you, by an enduring statute. It is an enduring covenant of salt before the LORD for you and your offspring with you.”

18:20And the LORD said to Aaron, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, nor shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel.

18:21And behold, I have given the sons of Levi every tithe in Israel as an inheritance, in return for their service which they perform—the service of the Tent of Meeting.

18:22And the sons of Israel shall no longer draw near to the Tent of Meeting, lest they bear sin and die.

18:23But the Levites shall perform the service of the Tent of Meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity. It shall be an enduring statute throughout your generations that they shall have no inheritance among the sons of Israel.

18:24For the tithe of the sons of Israel, which they raise up to the LORD as a contribution, I have given to the Levites as an inheritance; therefore I have said of them, They shall have no inheritance among the sons of Israel.”

18:25And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

18:26“Speak also to the Levites, and say to them: When you receive from the sons of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them as your inheritance, then you shall raise up from it a contribution to the LORD, a tithe of the tithe.

18:27And your contribution shall be reckoned to you as grain from the threshing floor and as produce from the winepress.

18:28Thus you also shall raise up a contribution to the LORD from all your tithes which you receive from the sons of Israel, and from it you shall give the LORD’s contribution to Aaron the priest.

18:29From all your gifts you shall raise up every contribution due to the LORD; from all the best of them, you shall raise up the holy portion.

18:30And you shall say to them: When you have raised up the best of it, it shall be reckoned to the Levites as the produce of the threshing floor and the produce of the winepress.

18:31And you and your households may eat it in any place, for it is your wages in return for your service in the Tent of Meeting.

18:32And you shall bear no sin because of it when you have raised up the best of it; but you shall not profane the holy things of the sons of Israel, and you shall not die.”

Chapter 19

19:1And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

19:2“This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded: Speak to the sons of Israel, that they bring you a red heifer, unblemished, in which there is no defect, and upon which no yoke has come.

19:3And you shall give her to Eleazar the priest, and she shall be brought outside the camp and slaughtered before him.

19:4And Eleazar the priest shall take some of her blood with his finger and sprinkle some of her blood seven times toward the front of the Tent of Meeting.

19:5And the heifer shall be burned in his sight; her hide, her flesh, her blood, and her dung shall be burned.

19:6And the priest shall take cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet yarn, and cast them into the midst of the burning heifer.

19:7Then the priest shall wash his garments and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp; but the priest shall be unclean until evening.

19:8And the one who burns her shall wash his garments in water and bathe his body in water, and he shall be unclean until evening.

19:9And a clean man shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and place them outside the camp in a clean place. They shall be kept for the congregation of the sons of Israel for water for impurity; it is for cleansing from sin.

19:10And the one who gathers up the ashes of the heifer shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening. It shall be an enduring statute for the sons of Israel and for the sojourner who sojourns among them.

19:11Whoever touches the dead body of any person shall be unclean for seven days.

19:12He shall cleanse himself with the water on the third day and on the seventh day, and then he shall be clean; but if he does not cleanse himself on the third day and on the seventh day, he shall not be clean.

19:13Whoever touches a dead body—the body of a man who has died—and does not cleanse himself, defiles the Dwelling Place of the LORD; that person shall be cut off from Israel. Because the water for impurity was not sprinkled on him, he remains unclean; his uncleanness is still upon him.

19:14This is the law when a man dies in a tent: everyone who enters the tent, and everything in the tent, shall be unclean for seven days.

19:15And every open vessel which has no cover fastened on it shall be unclean.

19:16And whoever in the open field touches one slain by the sword, or a dead body, or a human bone, or a grave, shall be unclean for seven days.

19:17And for the unclean person they shall take some of the ashes of the burned purification offering, and fresh water shall be added to them in a vessel.

19:18Then a clean person shall take hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle it on the tent, on all the furnishings, on the persons who were there, and on the one who touched a bone, one slain, a dead body, or a grave.

19:19And the clean person shall sprinkle the unclean person on the third day and on the seventh day, and shall cleanse him on the seventh day. Then he shall wash his garments and bathe in water, and he shall be clean at evening.

19:20But the man who is unclean and does not cleanse himself—that person shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, for he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean.

19:21And it shall be an enduring statute for them: the one who sprinkles the water for impurity shall wash his garments, and the one who touches the water for impurity shall be unclean until evening.

19:22And whatever the unclean person touches shall be unclean, and the person who touches it shall be unclean until evening.”

Chapter 20

20:1Then the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people remained in Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried there.

20:2Now there was no water for the congregation, and they assembled themselves against Moses and Aaron.

20:3And the people contended with Moses and said, “O that we had died when our brothers died before the LORD!

20:4Why have you brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here?

20:5And why have you brought us up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for seed or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.”

20:6Then Moses and Aaron went from before the assembly to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and fell on their faces, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

20:7And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

20:8“Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you and your brother Aaron. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it shall give its water; thus you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their livestock.”

20:9So Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He had commanded him.

20:10And Moses and Aaron assembled the congregation before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Shall we bring water for you out of this rock?”

20:11Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod, and abundant water came out; and the congregation drank, and their livestock also.

20:12But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in Me, to uphold Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”

20:13These are the waters of Meribah, where the sons of Israel contended with the LORD, and He showed Himself holy among them.

20:14Then Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that has overtaken us,

20:15how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt many days, and the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers.

20:16And when we cried to the LORD, He heard our voice and sent an Angel and brought us out of Egypt. And behold, we are in Kadesh, a city at the edge of your border.

20:17Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, nor will we drink water from any well. We will go by the King’s Highway; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”

20:18But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through me, lest I come out against you with the sword.”

20:19And the sons of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if I or my livestock drink any of your water, I will pay its price. Only let me pass through on foot—nothing more.”

20:20But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against him with many people and a strong hand.

20:21Thus Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his territory, and Israel turned away from him.

20:22And the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.

20:23And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, saying,

20:24“Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because you rebelled against My command at the waters of Meribah.

20:25Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up Mount Hor.

20:26Strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. Then Aaron shall be gathered to his people and shall die there.”

20:27So Moses did as the LORD had commanded, and they went up Mount Hor in the sight of the whole congregation.

20:28And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron died there on the top of the mountain; then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

20:29And when the whole congregation saw that Aaron had died, all the house of Israel mourned for Aaron thirty days.

Chapter 21

21:1When the Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelt in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel and took some of them captive.

21:2Then Israel vowed a vow to the LORD and said, “If You will indeed give this people into my hand, then I will devote their cities to destruction.”

21:3And the LORD heard the voice of Israel and gave the Canaanites into his hand; and he devoted them and their cities to destruction. So the name of the place was called Hormah.

21:4Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the way of the Sea of Reeds, to go around the land of Edom; and the spirit of the people grew impatient on the way.

21:5And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this miserable food.”

21:6Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died.

21:7And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that He take the serpents away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

21:8And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”

21:9So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the pole; and if a serpent bit anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

21:10And the sons of Israel journeyed and encamped at Oboth.

21:11Then they journeyed from Oboth and encamped at Iye-Abarim, in the wilderness facing Moab, toward the sunrise.

21:12From there they journeyed and encamped in the Valley of Zered.

21:13From there they journeyed and encamped beyond the Arnon, which is in the wilderness extending from the border of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

21:14Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD: “Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,

21:15and the slope of the valleys which extends to the site of Ar and leans against the border of Moab.”

21:16And from there they journeyed to Beer; this is the well of which the LORD said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”

21:17Then Israel sang this song: “Spring up, O well! Sing to it!

21:18The well which princes dug, which the nobles of the people hollowed out with the ruler’s staff, with their staffs.” And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah,

21:19and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

21:20and from Bamoth to the valley in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks down upon the wasteland.

21:21Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

21:22“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from any well. We will go by the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.”

21:23But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his territory. And Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness; he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

21:24And Israel struck him with the edge of the sword and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites; for the border of the Ammonites was strong.

21:25And Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and all its villages.

21:26For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon.

21:27Therefore the makers of proverbs say: “Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established.

21:28For fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the masters of the heights of the Arnon.

21:29Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh! he has given his sons as fugitives and his daughters into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites.

21:30We shot at them; Heshbon was destroyed as far as Dibon. We laid waste as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba.”

21:31Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

21:32And Moses sent men to spy out Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.

21:33Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og king of Bashan came out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

21:34And the LORD said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.”

21:35So they struck him, his sons, and all his people, until no survivor was left to him; and they possessed his land.

Chapter 22

22:1Then the sons of Israel journeyed and encamped in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho.

22:2And Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

22:3And the Moabites were exceedingly afraid of the people, because they were numerous; and the Moabites were filled with dread before the sons of Israel.

22:4Then the Moabites said to the elders of Midian, “Now this assembly will lick up all that is around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

22:5And he sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates in the land of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt; behold, it has covered the face of the land, and it has settled opposite me.

22:6And now, please come and curse this people for me, for it is mightier than I. Perhaps I may be able to strike it and drive it out of the land; for I know that whomever you bless is blessed, and whomever you curse is cursed.”

22:7Then the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fees for divination in their hands; and they came to Balaam and spoke the words of Balak to him.

22:8And he said to them, “Stay here tonight, and I will bring back word to you as the LORD speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.

22:9Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”

22:10And Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent word to me:

22:11Behold, the people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come, curse it for me; perhaps I may be able to fight against it and drive it out.”

22:12Then God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.”

22:13So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go back to your land, for the LORD has refused to permit me to go with you.”

22:14Then the princes of Moab rose and returned to Balak, and said, “Balaam has refused to come with us.”

22:15Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more honored than the first.

22:16And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak son of Zippor: Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me,

22:17for I will honor you very greatly, and whatever you say to me I will do. Please come, therefore, and curse this people for me.”

22:18But Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the LORD my God, to do anything small or great.

22:19And now, please stay here tonight also, that I may know what more the LORD will say to me.”

22:20Then God came to Balaam by night and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you shall you do.”

22:21So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.

22:22But the anger of God burned because he was going, and the Angel of the LORD took His stand in the road as an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

22:23And the donkey saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the road, with His drawn sword in His hand; and the donkey turned aside from the road and went into the field. Then Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.

22:24Then the Angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side.

22:25And the donkey saw the Angel of the LORD and pressed herself against the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck her again.

22:26Then the Angel of the LORD went farther and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left.

22:27And the donkey saw the Angel of the LORD and lay down under Balaam; and Balaam’s anger burned, and he struck the donkey with his staff.

22:28Then the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

22:29And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a mockery of me! If only there were a sword in my hand, I would kill you now.”

22:30Then the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, upon which you have ridden all your life to this day? Have I ever been accustomed to do this to you?” And he said, “No.”

22:31Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the road, with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed low and fell on his face.

22:32And the Angel of the LORD said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, because your way is contrary to Me.

22:33The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. Had she not turned aside from Me, I would surely have killed you by now and let her live.”

22:34Then Balaam said to the Angel of the LORD, “I have sinned, for I did not know that You were standing in the road to meet me. And now, if it is evil in Your sight, I will turn back.”

22:35But the Angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go with the men; nevertheless, you shall speak only the word which I speak to you.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

22:36When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, which was on the border of the Arnon, at the farthest edge of the border.

22:37And Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not earnestly send for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I truly unable to honor you?”

22:38Then Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you. But am I now able to speak anything at all? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I shall speak.”

22:39Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.

22:40And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep and sent portions to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.

22:41And it came to pass in the morning that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal; and from there he saw the edge of the people.

Chapter 23

23:1Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me here.”

23:2And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

23:3Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go. Perhaps the LORD will come to meet me; and whatever He reveals to me I will tell you.” And he went to a bare height.

23:4And God met Balaam, and he said to Him, “I have arranged the seven altars, and I have offered a bull and a ram on each altar.”

23:5Then the LORD put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.”

23:6So he returned to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, he and all the princes of Moab.

23:7Then he took up his discourse and said: “From Aram Balak brought me, the king of Moab from the mountains of the east: ‘Come, curse Jacob for me; come, denounce Israel!’

23:8How can I curse whom God has not cursed? And how can I denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?

23:9For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the heights I behold him. Behold, a people dwelling alone, not reckoning itself among the nations.

23:10Who can count the dust of Jacob, or number even a fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of the upright, and let my end be like his!”

23:11Then Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them instead!”

23:12And he answered and said, “Must I not take heed to speak what the LORD puts in my mouth?”

23:13Then Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place, from where you may see them. You shall see only the edge of them, and shall not see them all; and curse them for me from there.”

23:14So he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

23:15Then he said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt offering, and I will meet Him over there.”

23:16And the LORD met Balaam, put a word in his mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.”

23:17So he came to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab were with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the LORD spoken?”

23:18Then he took up his discourse and said: “Rise, Balak, and hear; give ear to me, son of Zippor!

23:19God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should relent. Has He spoken, and will He not do it? Or has He said, and will He not fulfill it?

23:20Behold, I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it.

23:21He has not beheld iniquity in Jacob, nor has He seen trouble in Israel. The LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.

23:22God brought them out of Egypt; the strength of a wild ox is theirs.

23:23For there is no omen against Jacob, nor divination against Israel. At the appointed time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, “What has God done!”

23:24Behold, the people rises like a lioness and lifts itself up like a lion. It does not lie down until it devours prey and drinks the blood of the slain.”

23:25Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”

23:26But Balaam answered and said to Balak, “Did I not tell you, saying, All that the LORD speaks, that I must do?”

23:27Then Balak said to Balaam, “Please come; I will take you to another place. Perhaps God will see fit to curse them for me from there.”

23:28So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which looks down upon the wasteland.

23:29Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me here.”

23:30And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

Chapter 24

24:1Now when Balaam saw that it was good in the sight of the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go as at other times to seek omens, but set his face toward the wilderness.

24:2And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel dwelling tribe by tribe; and the Spirit of God came upon him.

24:3Then he took up his discourse and said: “The oracle of Balaam son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is closed,

24:4the oracle of him who hears the sayings of God, who sees a vision of the Almighty, falling down with eyes uncovered:

24:5How good are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings, O Israel!

24:6Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD, like cedars beside the waters.

24:7Water flows from his buckets, and his seed is by many waters. His king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.

24:8God brought him out of Egypt; the strength of a wild ox is his. He devours the nations, his adversaries; he crushes their bones and shatters them with his arrows.

24:9He crouched, he lay down like a lion, and like a lioness; who will rouse him? Blessed is everyone who blesses you, and cursed is everyone who curses you.”

24:10Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his palms together. And Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them these three times!

24:11And now, flee to your place! I said I would honor you greatly, but behold, the LORD has withheld you from honor.”

24:12Then Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not also speak to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying,

24:13Even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the LORD, to do good or evil of my own heart; what the LORD speaks, that I shall speak?

24:14And now, behold, I am going to my people. Come, I will advise you what this people will do to your people in the latter days.”

24:15Then he took up his discourse and said: “The oracle of Balaam son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is closed,

24:16the oracle of him who hears the sayings of God and knows the knowledge of the Most High, who sees a vision of the Almighty, falling down with eyes uncovered:

24:17I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near. A star comes out of Jacob, and a scepter rises out of Israel; it crushes the corners of Moab and destroys all the sons of Seth.

24:18And Edom shall become a possession; Seir also shall become a possession of its enemies, while Israel acts valiantly.

24:19And One from Jacob shall rule and destroy the survivors of the city.”

24:20Then he saw Amalek and took up his discourse and said: “Amalek was first among the nations, but its end shall be destruction forever.”

24:21Then he saw the Kenites and took up his discourse and said: “Firm is your dwelling, and your nest is set in the rock;

24:22nevertheless, the Kenites shall be consumed. How long until Assyria carries you captive?”

24:23Then he took up his discourse and said: “Alas! Who shall live when God does this?

24:24But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim; they shall afflict Assyria and afflict Eber, and they too shall perish forever.”

24:25Then Balaam rose and departed and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.

Chapter 25

25:1And Israel dwelt in Shittim, and the people began to commit sexual immorality with the women of Moab.

25:2And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate and bowed themselves down to their gods.

25:3So Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor, and the anger of the LORD burned against Israel.

25:4Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them before the LORD in the sun, so that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.”

25:5And Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you shall kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.”

25:6And behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his brothers, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, while they were weeping at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting.

25:7When Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand.

25:8And he went after the man of Israel into the inner chamber and pierced them both, the man of Israel and the woman, through her abdomen. Then the plague against the sons of Israel was stopped.

25:9And those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

25:10Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

25:11“Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the sons of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the sons of Israel in My zeal.

25:12Therefore say: Behold, I give him My covenant of peace;

25:13and it shall be to him and to his offspring after him a covenant of an enduring priesthood, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel.”

25:14Now the name of the man of Israel who was struck down with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites.

25:15And the name of the Midianite woman who was struck down was Cozbi daughter of Zur; he was a tribal head of a father’s house in Midian.

25:16Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

25:17“Harass the Midianites and strike them,

25:18for they harassed you with their schemes, by which they schemed against you in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a leader of Midian, their sister, who was struck down on the day of the plague because of Peor.”

25:19And it came to pass after the plague,

Chapter 26

26:1that the LORD spoke to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saying,

26:2“Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by the house of their fathers, everyone in Israel able to go to war.”

26:3So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan near Jericho, saying,

26:4“Count everyone from twenty years old and upward,” as the LORD had commanded Moses. Now the sons of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were:

26:5Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. The sons of Reuben: of Enoch, the family of the Enochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites;

26:6of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites.

26:7These are the families of the Reubenites; and those numbered of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty.

26:8And the son of Pallu was Eliab.

26:9And the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram who were summoned from the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron with the congregation of Korah, when they contended against the LORD.

26:10And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them together with Korah, when that congregation died, when the fire consumed the two hundred and fifty men; and they became a sign.

26:11But the sons of Korah did not die.

26:12The sons of Simeon by their families: of Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the family of the Jachinites;

26:13of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.

26:14These are the families of the Simeonites—twenty-two thousand two hundred.

26:15The sons of Gad by their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the family of the Haggites; of Shuni, the family of the Shunites;

26:16of Ozni, the family of the Oznites; of Eri, the family of the Erites;

26:17of Arod, the family of the Arodites; of Areli, the family of the Arelites.

26:18These are the families of the sons of Gad; and those numbered of them were forty thousand five hundred.

26:19The sons of Judah were Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

26:20And the sons of Judah by their families were: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Perez, the family of the Perezites; of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites.

26:21And the sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.

26:22These are the families of Judah; and those numbered of them were seventy-six thousand five hundred.

26:23The sons of Issachar by their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of Pua, the family of the Punites;

26:24of Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites.

26:25These are the families of Issachar; and those numbered of them were sixty-four thousand three hundred.

26:26The sons of Zebulun by their families: of Sered, the family of the Seredites; of Elon, the family of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites.

26:27These are the families of the Zebulunites; and those numbered of them were sixty thousand five hundred.

26:28The sons of Joseph by their families were Manasseh and Ephraim.

26:29The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites; and Machir begot Gilead; of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites.

26:30These are the sons of Gilead: of Abiezer, the family of the Abiezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites;

26:31and of Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and of Shechem, the family of the Shechemites;

26:32and of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites.

26:33Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters; and the names of Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

26:34These are the families of Manasseh; and those numbered of them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred.

26:35These are the sons of Ephraim by their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the family of the Becherites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites.

26:36And these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites.

26:37These are the families of the sons of Ephraim; and those numbered of them were thirty-two thousand five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph by their families.

26:38The sons of Benjamin by their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites;

26:39of Shupham, the family of the Shuphamites; of Hupham, the family of the Huphamites.

26:40And the sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the family of the Ardites; of Naaman, the family of the Naamites.

26:41These are the sons of Benjamin by their families; and those numbered of them were forty-five thousand six hundred.

26:42These are the sons of Dan by their families: of Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan by their families.

26:43All the families of the Shuhamites, those numbered of them, were sixty-four thousand four hundred.

26:44The sons of Asher by their families: of Imnah, the family of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the family of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the family of the Beriites.

26:45Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites.

26:46And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.

26:47These are the families of the sons of Asher; and those numbered of them were fifty-three thousand four hundred.

26:48The sons of Naphtali by their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites;

26:49of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the family of the Shillemites.

26:50These are the families of Naphtali by their families; and those numbered of them were forty-five thousand four hundred.

26:51These are those numbered of the sons of Israel—six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty.

26:52Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

26:53“To these the land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names.

26:54To the larger tribe you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller tribe you shall give a smaller inheritance; each shall be given its inheritance according to those numbered of it.

26:55Nevertheless, the land shall be divided by lot; they shall inherit according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.

26:56According to the lot, their inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller.”

26:57And these are those numbered of the Levites by their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites.

26:58These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, and the family of the Korahites. And Kohath begot Amram.

26:59And the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.

26:60And to Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

26:61But Nadab and Abihu died when they presented unauthorized fire before the LORD.

26:62And those numbered of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from one month old and upward; for they were not numbered among the sons of Israel, because no inheritance was given to them among the sons of Israel.

26:63These are those numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan near Jericho.

26:64But among these there was not one of those numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

26:65For the LORD had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” And not one of them was left, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Chapter 27

27:1Then the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the families of Manasseh son of Joseph, drew near. And these were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

27:2And they stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, before the leaders, and before all the congregation, at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting, saying,

27:3“Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the congregation that gathered against the LORD in the congregation of Korah, but he died for his own sin; and he had no sons.

27:4Why should our father’s name be taken away from the midst of his family because he had no son? Give us a possession among our father’s brothers.”

27:5So Moses brought their case before the LORD.

27:6Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

27:7“The daughters of Zelophehad speak rightly. You shall surely give them a possession as an inheritance among their father’s brothers, and you shall transfer their father’s inheritance to them.

27:8And you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying: If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter.

27:9And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.

27:10And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.

27:11And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his family, and he shall possess it. And this shall be a statute of judgment for the sons of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.”

27:12Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up into this mountain of Abarim and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel.

27:13And when you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered,

27:14because you rebelled against My command in the wilderness of Zin, when the congregation contended, and failed to uphold Me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” These are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin.

27:15Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying,

27:16“Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,

27:17who will go out before them and come in before them, who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD may not be like sheep that have no shepherd.”

27:18Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand upon him.

27:19And cause him to stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and charge him in their sight.

27:20And put some of your splendor upon him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him.

27:21And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the sacred decision lots before the LORD. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in—he and all the sons of Israel with him, even all the congregation.”

27:22So Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. He took Joshua and caused him to stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.

27:23Then he laid his hands upon him and charged him, as the LORD had spoken by the hand of Moses.

Chapter 28

28:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

28:2“Command the sons of Israel and say to them: You shall take care to present to Me at its appointed time My offering, My food for My offerings by fire, as a soothing aroma to Me.

28:3And you shall say to them: This is the offering by fire that you shall present to the LORD: two one-year-old lambs, unblemished, each day, as a continual burnt offering.

28:4You shall offer the first lamb in the morning, and the second lamb you shall offer at twilight;

28:5and with it one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with one-fourth of a hin of oil from beaten olives.

28:6It is a continual burnt offering, which was offered at Mount Sinai for a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the LORD.

28:7And its drink offering shall be one-fourth of a hin for each lamb; in the holy place you shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the LORD.

28:8And the second lamb you shall offer at twilight. You shall offer it with the same grain offering and drink offering as in the morning, as an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD.

28:9And on the Sabbath day, you shall offer two one-year-old lambs, unblemished, and two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, and its drink offering—

28:10the burnt offering for every Sabbath, besides the continual burnt offering and its drink offering.

28:11And at your new moons you shall present a burnt offering to the LORD: two young bulls, one ram, and seven one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

28:12and three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for each bull; and two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for the one ram;

28:13and one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for each lamb, as a burnt offering, a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the LORD.

28:14And their drink offerings shall be half a hin of wine for each bull, one-third of a hin for the ram, and one-fourth of a hin for each lamb. This is the burnt offering for every month throughout the months of the year.

28:15And one male goat shall be offered as a sin offering to the LORD, besides the continual burnt offering and its drink offering.

28:16And in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, is the Passover to the LORD.

28:17And on the fifteenth day of this month is a festival; for seven days unleavened bread shall be eaten.

28:18On the first day there shall be a holy assembly; you shall do no laborious work.

28:19And you shall present an offering by fire, a burnt offering to the LORD: two young bulls, one ram, and seven one-year-old lambs; they shall be unblemished.

28:20And for their grain offering, you shall offer fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for each bull, and two-tenths for the ram;

28:21one-tenth you shall offer for each of the seven lambs;

28:22and one male goat as a sin offering, to make atonement for you.

28:23You shall offer these besides the burnt offering of the morning, which is for the continual burnt offering.

28:24In this manner you shall offer daily, for seven days, the food of an offering by fire, a soothing aroma to the LORD. It shall be offered besides the continual burnt offering and its drink offering.

28:25And on the seventh day you shall have a holy assembly; you shall do no laborious work.

28:26And on the day of the firstfruits, when you present a new grain offering to the LORD at your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy assembly; you shall do no laborious work.

28:27And you shall present a burnt offering as a soothing aroma to the LORD: two young bulls, one ram, and seven one-year-old lambs;

28:28and for their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for each bull, two-tenths for the one ram,

28:29and one-tenth for each of the seven lambs;

28:30and one male goat, to make atonement for you.

28:31You shall offer them and their drink offerings besides the continual burnt offering and its grain offering; they shall be unblemished.

Chapter 29

29:1“And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy assembly; you shall do no laborious work. It shall be a day marked by a blast for you.

29:2And you shall offer a burnt offering as a soothing aroma to the LORD: one young bull, one ram, and seven one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

29:3and for their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for the bull, two-tenths for the ram,

29:4and one-tenth for each of the seven lambs;

29:5and one male goat as a sin offering, to make atonement for you;

29:6besides the burnt offering of the new moon and its grain offering, and the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and their drink offerings, according to their ordinance, for a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the LORD.

29:7And on the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy assembly, and you shall humble yourselves; you shall do no work.

29:8And you shall present a burnt offering to the LORD as a soothing aroma: one young bull, one ram, and seven one-year-old lambs; they shall be unblemished;

29:9and for their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for the bull, two-tenths for the one ram,

29:10and one-tenth for each of the seven lambs;

29:11and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the sin offering for atonement and the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and their drink offerings.

29:12And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month you shall have a holy assembly; you shall do no laborious work, and you shall celebrate a festival to the LORD for seven days.

29:13And you shall present a burnt offering, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD: thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old lambs; they shall be unblemished;

29:14and for their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for each of the thirteen bulls; two-tenths for each of the two rams;

29:15and one-tenth for each of the fourteen lambs;

29:16and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29:17And on the second day, twelve young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

29:18and their grain offering and drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number and according to the ordinance;

29:19and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and their drink offerings.

29:20And on the third day, eleven bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

29:21and their grain offering and drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number and according to the ordinance;

29:22and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29:23And on the fourth day, ten bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

29:24and their grain offering and drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number and according to the ordinance;

29:25and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29:26And on the fifth day, nine bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

29:27and their grain offering and drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number and according to the ordinance;

29:28and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29:29And on the sixth day, eight bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

29:30and their grain offering and drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number and according to the ordinance;

29:31and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29:32And on the seventh day, seven bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

29:33and their grain offering and drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number and according to the ordinance;

29:34and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29:35On the eighth day you shall have a solemn assembly; you shall do no laborious work.

29:36And you shall present a burnt offering, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD: one bull, one ram, and seven one-year-old lambs, unblemished;

29:37and their grain offering and drink offerings for the bull, the ram, and the lambs, according to their number and according to the ordinance;

29:38and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29:39You shall offer these to the LORD at your appointed times, besides your vows and your freewill offerings, as your burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings, and peace offerings.”

Chapter 30

30:1Then Moses spoke to the sons of Israel according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses.

30:2And Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the sons of Israel, saying, “This is what the LORD has commanded:

30:3When a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds from his mouth.

30:4And when a woman vows a vow to the LORD and binds herself by a pledge while in her father’s house in her youth,

30:5and her father hears her vow and the pledge by which she has bound herself, and her father remains silent toward her, then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand.

30:6But if her father forbids her on the day he hears, none of her vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand; and the LORD will forgive her, because her father forbade her.

30:7And if she marries while under her vows, or under a rash utterance of her lips by which she has bound herself,

30:8and her husband hears of it and remains silent toward her on the day he hears, then her vows shall stand, and the pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.

30:9But if her husband forbids her on the day he hears, then he nullifies the vow that binds her and the rash utterance of her lips by which she has bound herself; and the LORD will forgive her.

30:10But the vow of a widow or a divorced woman—anything by which she has bound herself—shall stand against her.

30:11And if she vowed in her husband’s house or bound herself by a pledge with an oath,

30:12and her husband heard and remained silent toward her and did not forbid her, then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand.

30:13But if her husband nullifies them on the day he hears, then nothing that proceeded from her lips concerning her vows or the pledge by which she bound herself shall stand. Her husband has nullified them, and the LORD will forgive her.

30:14Every vow and every oath binding her to humble herself, her husband may confirm, or her husband may nullify.

30:15But if her husband remains silent toward her from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or all her pledges that bind her; he has confirmed them because he remained silent toward her on the day he heard.

30:16But if he nullifies them after he has heard, then he shall bear her guilt.”

30:17These are the statutes which the LORD commanded Moses concerning a man and his wife, and concerning a father and his daughter in her youth while in her father’s house.

Chapter 31

31:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

31:2“Avenge the sons of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”

31:3And Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for war, that they may go against Midian to execute the LORD’s vengeance on Midian.

31:4You shall send one thousand from each tribe to war, from all the tribes of Israel.”

31:5So there were mustered from the thousands of Israel one thousand from each tribe—twelve thousand armed for war.

31:6And Moses sent them to war, one thousand from each tribe, together with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, with the sacred vessels and the trumpets for sounding the alarm in his hand.

31:7And they warred against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every male.

31:8And besides those slain, they killed the kings of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

31:9And the sons of Israel took the women of Midian and their children captive, and plundered all their livestock, all their herds, and all their goods.

31:10And they burned with fire all their cities where they dwelt and all their encampments.

31:11And they took all the spoil and all the plunder, both people and animals.

31:12And they brought the captives, the plunder, and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the sons of Israel, at the camp in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, near Jericho.

31:13Then Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp.

31:14And Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who had returned from the campaign.

31:15And Moses said to them, “Have you kept every female alive?

31:16Behold, these were the ones who, at Balaam’s word, caused the sons of Israel to act unfaithfully against the LORD in the matter of Peor, so that the plague came upon the congregation of the LORD.

31:17And now, kill every male among the children, and kill every woman who has known a man by lying with him.

31:18But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man by lying with him.

31:19And you, encamp outside the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed a person, and whoever has touched one slain, shall purify himself on the third day and on the seventh day—you and your captives.

31:20And you shall purify every garment, every article of skin, everything made of goats’ hair, and every article of wood.”

31:21Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of the army who had gone to battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD commanded Moses:

31:22only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead—

31:23everything that can withstand fire—you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless, it shall also be purified with the water for impurity. And whatever cannot withstand fire you shall pass through the water.

31:24And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day and be clean; and afterward you may enter the camp.”

31:25Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

31:26“Count the plunder that was taken, both people and animals—you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the ancestral houses of the congregation.

31:27And divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the battle and went out to war, and all the congregation.

31:28And you shall levy for the LORD from the men of war who went out to battle: one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, or sheep.

31:29Take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as a contribution to the LORD.

31:30And from the sons of Israel’s half you shall take one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, or any livestock, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the Dwelling Place of the LORD.”

31:31So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

31:32Now the plunder remaining from the spoil that the army had taken was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,

31:33seventy-two thousand cattle,

31:34sixty-one thousand donkeys,

31:35and thirty-two thousand persons in all—women who had not known a man by lying with him.

31:36And the half that was the share of those who went out to war numbered three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep.

31:37And the levy to the LORD from the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.

31:38And the cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the levy to the LORD was seventy-two.

31:39And the donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the levy to the LORD was sixty-one.

31:40And the persons were sixteen thousand, of which the levy to the LORD was thirty-two persons.

31:41Then Moses gave the levy, the LORD’s contribution, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

31:42And from the sons of Israel’s half, which Moses had divided from the men who had gone to war—

31:43the congregation’s half was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,

31:44thirty-six thousand cattle,

31:45thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,

31:46and sixteen thousand persons—

31:47from the sons of Israel’s half Moses took one out of every fifty, from the people and from the animals, and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the Dwelling Place of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

31:48Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—drew near to Moses.

31:49And they said to Moses, “Your servants have counted the men of war who are under our command, and not one of us is missing.

31:50And we have presented the LORD’s offering, each man what he found of gold objects—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”

31:51And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from them, every crafted article.

31:52And all the gold of the contribution that they presented to the LORD was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.

31:53The men of the army had each taken spoil for himself.

31:54Then Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD.

Chapter 32

32:1Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock; and they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the region was a place for livestock.

32:2Then the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,

32:3“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sibmah, Nebo, and Beon—

32:4the land which the LORD struck down before the congregation of Israel—is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”

32:5And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession; do not make us cross the Jordan.”

32:6Then Moses said to the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to battle while you remain here?

32:7And why do you discourage the hearts of the sons of Israel from crossing over into the land which the LORD has given them?

32:8Thus your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the land.

32:9For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the hearts of the sons of Israel, so that they did not enter the land which the LORD had given them.

32:10And the anger of the LORD burned on that day, and He swore, saying,

32:11‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not followed Me fully,

32:12except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they have followed the LORD fully.’

32:13And the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was consumed.

32:14And behold, you have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to add still more to the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.

32:15If you turn away from following Him, He will again leave them in the wilderness, and you will bring ruin upon all this people.”

32:16Then they drew near to him and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our children.

32:17But we ourselves will arm ourselves and hasten before the sons of Israel until we have brought them to their place; and our children will remain in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

32:18We will not return to our houses until every one of the sons of Israel has received his inheritance.

32:19For we will not inherit with them beyond the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the eastern side of the Jordan.”

32:20Then Moses said to them, “If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle,

32:21and every armed man among you crosses over the Jordan before the LORD, until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,

32:22and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you may return and be free of guilt before the LORD and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

32:23But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you.

32:24Build cities for your children and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.”

32:25Then the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.

32:26Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will remain there in the cities of Gilead.

32:27But your servants will cross over, every man armed for battle, before the LORD, as my lord has spoken.”

32:28So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the ancestral houses of the tribes of the sons of Israel.

32:29And Moses said to them, “If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, every one armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession.

32:30But if they do not cross over armed with you, then they shall receive a possession among you in the land of Canaan.”

32:31And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, “As the LORD has spoken to your servants, so we will do.

32:32We will cross over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, but the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us on this side of the Jordan.”

32:33So Moses gave to them—to the sons of Gad, the sons of Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph—the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan: the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land.

32:34And the sons of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer,

32:35Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah,

32:36Beth-Nimrah and Beth-Haran, fortified cities, and sheepfolds.

32:37And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,

32:38and Nebo and Ba‘al-Meon—their names being changed—and Sibmah; and they gave names to the cities which they had built.

32:39And the sons of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.

32:40Then Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it.

32:41And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their towns, and called them “Towns of Jair.”

32:42And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

Chapter 33

33:1These are the journeys of the sons of Israel, who came out of the land of Egypt by their divisions under the hand of Moses and Aaron.

33:2And Moses recorded their departures according to their journeys, by the command of the LORD; and these were their journeys according to their departures:

33:3They journeyed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month. On the day after the Passover the sons of Israel went out boldly in the sight of all the Egyptians,

33:4while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, whom the LORD had struck down among them. The LORD also executed judgments on their gods.

33:5And the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses and encamped at Succoth.

33:6And they journeyed from Succoth and encamped at Etham, which was at the edge of the wilderness.

33:7And they journeyed from Etham and turned back toward Pi-Hahiroth, which faces Ba‘al-Zephon, and they encamped before Migdol.

33:8And they journeyed from Pi-Hahiroth and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness; and they went a three-day journey in the wilderness of Etham and encamped at Marah.

33:9And they journeyed from Marah and came to Elim; and at Elim were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there.

33:10And they journeyed from Elim and encamped by the Sea of Reeds.

33:11And they journeyed from the Sea of Reeds and encamped in the wilderness of Sin.

33:12And they journeyed from the wilderness of Sin and encamped at Dophkah.

33:13And they journeyed from Dophkah and encamped at Alush.

33:14And they journeyed from Alush and encamped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink.

33:15And they journeyed from Rephidim and encamped in the wilderness of Sinai.

33:16And they journeyed from the wilderness of Sinai and encamped at Kibroth-Hattaavah.

33:17And they journeyed from Kibroth-Hattaavah and encamped at Hazeroth.

33:18And they journeyed from Hazeroth and encamped at Rithmah.

33:19And they journeyed from Rithmah and encamped at Rimmon-Parez.

33:20And they journeyed from Rimmon-Parez and encamped at Libnah.

33:21And they journeyed from Libnah and encamped at Rissah.

33:22And they journeyed from Rissah and encamped at Kehelathah.

33:23And they journeyed from Kehelathah and encamped at Mount Shapher.

33:24And they journeyed from Mount Shapher and encamped at Haradah.

33:25And they journeyed from Haradah and encamped at Makheloth.

33:26And they journeyed from Makheloth and encamped at Tahath.

33:27And they journeyed from Tahath and encamped at Terah.

33:28And they journeyed from Terah and encamped at Mithcah.

33:29And they journeyed from Mithcah and encamped at Hashmonah.

33:30And they journeyed from Hashmonah and encamped at Moseroth.

33:31And they journeyed from Moseroth and encamped at Bene-Jaakan.

33:32And they journeyed from Bene-Jaakan and encamped at Hor-Hagidgad.

33:33And they journeyed from Hor-Hagidgad and encamped at Jotbathah.

33:34And they journeyed from Jotbathah and encamped at Abronah.

33:35And they journeyed from Abronah and encamped at Ezion-geber.

33:36And they journeyed from Ezion-geber and encamped in the wilderness of Zin, which is Kadesh.

33:37And they journeyed from Kadesh and encamped at Mount Hor, at the edge of the land of Edom.

33:38Then Aaron the priest went up Mount Hor at the command of the LORD and died there, in the fortieth year after the sons of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fifth month, on the first day of the month.

33:39And Aaron was one hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor.

33:40And the Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelt in the Negev in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the sons of Israel.

33:41And they journeyed from Mount Hor and encamped at Zalmonah.

33:42And they journeyed from Zalmonah and encamped at Punon.

33:43And they journeyed from Punon and encamped at Oboth.

33:44And they journeyed from Oboth and encamped at Iye-Abarim, on the border of Moab.

33:45And they journeyed from Iim and encamped at Dibon-Gad.

33:46And they journeyed from Dibon-Gad and encamped at Almon-Diblathaim.

33:47And they journeyed from Almon-Diblathaim and encamped in the mountains of Abarim, before Nebo.

33:48And they journeyed from the mountains of Abarim and encamped in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, near Jericho.

33:49And they encamped by the Jordan, from Beth-Jeshimoth as far as Abel-Shittim, in the plains of Moab.

33:50And the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, near Jericho, saying,

33:51“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them: When you cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

33:52then you shall dispossess all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their figured stones, destroy all their cast-metal images, and lay waste all their high places.

33:53And you shall take possession of the land and dwell in it, for I have given the land to you to possess.

33:54And you shall apportion the land by lot according to your families. To the larger tribe you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller tribe you shall give a smaller inheritance. Wherever the lot falls for anyone, that shall be his; you shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers.

33:55But if you do not dispossess the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those whom you allow to remain shall become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall trouble you in the land where you dwell.

33:56And it shall be that what I intended to do to them, I will do to you.”

Chapter 34

34:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

34:2“Command the sons of Israel and say to them: When you come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance—the land of Canaan according to its borders.

34:3Your southern side shall extend from the wilderness of Zin along the side of Edom, and your southern border shall begin at the eastern end of the Salt Sea.

34:4Your border shall turn south of the ascent of Akrabbim, pass on to Zin, and extend south of Kadesh-Barnea. Then it shall go out to Hazar-Addar and pass on to Azmon.

34:5The border shall turn from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and it shall end at the sea.

34:6Your western border shall be the Great Sea and its coast. This shall be your western border.

34:7This shall be your northern border: from the Great Sea you shall draw a line to Mount Hor.

34:8From Mount Hor you shall draw a line to Lebo-hamath, and the border shall extend to Zedad.

34:9Then the border shall extend to Ziphron and end at Hazar-Enan. This shall be your northern border.

34:10You shall draw your eastern border from Hazar-Enan to Shepham.

34:11The border shall descend from Shepham to Riblah, east of Ain; then the border shall descend and reach the eastern slope of the Sea of Chinnereth.

34:12Then the border shall descend along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders all around.”

34:13And Moses commanded the sons of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give to the nine tribes and the half-tribe.

34:14For the tribe of the sons of Reuben, by the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad, by the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and those of the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance.

34:15The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan, near Jericho, eastward, toward the east.”

34:16And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

34:17“These are the names of the men who shall apportion the land to you as an inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.

34:18And you shall take one leader from each tribe to apportion the land as an inheritance.

34:19And these are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;

34:20And of the tribe of the sons of Simeon, Shemuel son of Ammihud;

34:21Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Chislon;

34:22And a prince of the tribe of the sons of Dan, Bukki son of Jogli;

34:23Of the sons of Joseph: a prince of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh, Hanniel son of Ephod;

34:24And a prince of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim, Kemuel son of Shiphtan;

34:25And a prince of the tribe of the sons of Zebulun, Elizaphan son of Parnach;

34:26And a prince of the tribe of the sons of Issachar, Paltiel son of Azzan;

34:27And a prince of the tribe of the sons of Asher, Ahihud son of Shelomi;

34:28And a prince of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali, Pedahel son of Ammihud.”

34:29These are the men whom the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the sons of Israel in the land of Canaan.

Chapter 35

35:1And the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, near Jericho, saying,

35:2“Command the sons of Israel to give the Levites cities to dwell in from the inheritance of their possession; and you shall also give the Levites pasturelands around the cities.

35:3The cities shall be for them to dwell in, and their pasturelands shall be for their livestock, their property, and all their animals.

35:4And the pasturelands of the cities which you give to the Levites are, from the wall of the city and outside, one thousand cubits around.

35:5You shall measure outside the city two thousand cubits on the east side, two thousand cubits on the south side, two thousand cubits on the west side, and two thousand cubits on the north side, with the city in the middle. These shall be the pasturelands of their cities.

35:6The cities that you give to the Levites shall include the six cities of refuge, which you shall provide so that a manslayer may flee there; and besides these you shall give forty-two cities.

35:7All the cities which you give to the Levites are forty-eight cities, them and their pasturelands.

35:8The cities that you give shall come from the possession of the sons of Israel. From a larger tribe you shall take many, and from a smaller tribe you shall take few; each tribe shall give some of its cities to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance it receives.”

35:9And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

35:10“Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: When you cross the Jordan to the land of Canaan,

35:11you shall select cities to be cities of refuge for you, so that a manslayer who kills a person unintentionally may flee there.

35:12The cities shall be a refuge for you from the avenger, so that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

35:13And as for the cities which you give, six are cities of refuge to you.

35:14Three of the cities you give from beyond the Jordan, and three of the cities you give in the land of Canaan; they are cities of refuge.

35:15These six cities shall be a refuge for the sons of Israel, for the sojourner, and for the settler among them, so that anyone who kills a person unintentionally may flee there.

35:16And if he strikes him with an iron instrument, and the person dies, he is a murderer; the murderer is certainly put to death.

35:17And if he strikes him with a stone in the hand, by which he could die, and the person dies, he is a murderer; the murderer is certainly put to death.

35:18Or if he strikes him with a wooden instrument in the hand, by which he could die, and the person dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

35:19The avenger of blood himself shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.

35:20And if he pushes him in hatred, or throws something at him while lying in wait, and the person dies,

35:21or strikes him with his hand in enmity, and the person dies, the striker shall surely be put to death; he is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he comes against him.

35:22But if suddenly, without enmity, he pushes him, or has cast any instrument at him without lying in wait,

35:23or, without seeing him, drops on him any stone by which a person could die, and he dies, though he was not his enemy and did not seek his harm,

35:24then the congregation shall judge between the manslayer and the avenger of blood according to these judgments.

35:25The congregation shall rescue the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood and return him to the city of refuge to which he fled; and he shall dwell there until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil.

35:26But if the manslayer indeed goes out beyond the border of the city of his refuge, to which he had fled,

35:27and the avenger of blood finds him outside the border of the city of his refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of blood;

35:28for he shall dwell in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest, and after the death of the high priest the manslayer shall return to the city of his possession.

35:29And these things shall be for you a statute of justice throughout your generations, in all your dwellings.

35:30Whoever kills a person shall be put to death as a murderer on the testimony of witnesses; but one witness alone shall not testify against a person to put him to death.

35:31And you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is condemned to die, for he shall surely be put to death.

35:32And you shall accept no ransom for one who has fled to his city of refuge, allowing him to return and dwell in the land before the death of the priest.

35:33You shall not pollute the land in which you are, for blood pollutes the land; and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it.

35:34And you shall not defile the land in which you dwell, among whom I dwell; for I, the LORD, dwell among the sons of Israel.”

Chapter 36

36:1Then the heads of the fathers of the families of the sons of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, drew near and spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the heads of the fathers of the sons of Israel.

36:2And they said, “The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the sons of Israel, and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

36:3Now if they are given as wives to one of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, then their inheritance shall be withdrawn from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; so it shall be withdrawn from the lot of our inheritance.

36:4And when the Jubilee of the sons of Israel comes, then their inheritance shall be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong, and their inheritance shall be withdrawn from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

36:5And Moses commanded the sons of Israel by the word of the LORD, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks rightly.

36:6This is what the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: Let them marry whomever they please, but they shall marry within a family of their father’s tribe.

36:7And the inheritance of the sons of Israel shall not pass from tribe to tribe; for each of the sons of Israel shall hold to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

36:8And every daughter possessing an inheritance from the tribes of the sons of Israel shall be wife to one from the family of the tribe of her father, so that each of the sons of Israel may possess the inheritance of his fathers.

36:9And the inheritance shall not pass from one tribe to another; for each of the tribes of the sons of Israel shall hold to his inheritance.”

36:10As the LORD had commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did.

36:11And Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, became wives to the sons of their fathers’ brothers.

36:12They became wives to men from the families of the sons of Manasseh, son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained with the tribe of the family of their father.

36:13These are the commandments and the judgments which the LORD commanded by Moses concerning the sons of Israel, in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, near Jericho.
