1:1The vision of Obadiah. Thus says Lord, the LORD, concerning Edom: We have heard a report from the LORD, and an envoy has been sent among the nations: “Rise, and let us rise against her for battle.”1:2“Behold, I have made you small among the nations; you are exceedingly despised.1:3The pride of your heart has deceived you, O dweller in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is on high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the earth?’1:4Though you soar high as an eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.1:5“If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—how you are destroyed!—would they not steal only enough for themselves? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings?1:6How Esau has been searched out! His hidden treasures have been uncovered.1:7All your allies have driven you to the border; your friends have deceived you and prevailed over you. Those who eat your bread have set a trap beneath you; there is no understanding in him.1:8Will I not in that day,” declares the LORD, “destroy the wise out of Edom, and understanding out of the mountain of Esau?1:9Your mighty men will be dismayed, O Teman, so that everyone from the mountain of Esau will be cut off by slaughter.1:10Because of violence against your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.1:11In the day when you stood aloof, in the day when strangers carried off his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, even you were as one of them.1:12But you should not have gloated over the day of your brother, the day of his misfortune; nor rejoiced over the sons of Judah in the day of their destruction; nor boasted in the day of distress.1:13You should not have entered the gate of My people in the day of their calamity; nor gloated, even you, over their misfortune in the day of their calamity; nor stretched out your hand against their wealth in the day of their calamity.1:14Nor should you have stood at the crossroads to cut off those who escaped, nor delivered up their survivors in the day of distress.1:15For the Day of the LORD is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deed will return upon your own head.1:16For as you have drunk upon My holy mountain, all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and gulp down, and will be as though they had never been.1:17But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, and it will be holy; and the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.1:18The house of Jacob will be a fire, the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau stubble; they will burn among them and consume them, and there will be no survivor of the house of Esau,” for the LORD has spoken.1:19Those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, and those of the lowland the land of the Philistines; they will possess the field of Ephraim and the field of Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.1:20The exiles of this company of the sons of Israel, who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad, will possess the cities of the Negev.1:21Deliverers will ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau; and the kingdom will be the LORD’s.
