Chapter 1

1:1These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-Zahab.
1:2It is eleven days from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.
1:3And it happened in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, that Moses spoke to the sons of Israel according to all that the LORD had commanded him concerning them,
1:4after he had struck Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth in Edrei.
1:5Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying,
1:6“The LORD our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, You have dwelt long enough at this mountain.
1:7Turn and set out, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all its neighboring regions—in the Arabah, the hill country, the lowland, the Negev, and the seacoast—the land of the Canaanites and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates.
1:8See, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their descendants after them.
1:9And I spoke to you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you alone.
1:10The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, today you are as the stars of the heavens in multitude.
1:11May the LORD, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as numerous as you are, and bless you as He has spoken to you.
1:12How can I bear by myself your burden, your load, and your strife?
1:13Provide for yourselves wise and understanding men, known to your tribes, and I will set them as your heads.
1:14Then you answered me and said, The word which you have spoken is good to do.
1:15So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and appointed them as heads over you: commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers for your tribes.
1:16And I commanded your judges at that time, saying, Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge in righteousness between a man, and his brother, and his sojourner.
1:17You shall show no partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of anyone, for the judgment belongs to God. And any matter too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.
1:18And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.
1:19Then we journeyed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, the way of the hill country of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-Barnea.
1:20Then I said to you, You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving to us.
1:21See, the LORD your God has set the land before you; ascend, possess it, as the LORD, God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Do not fear, nor be frightened.
1:22Then all of you came near to me and said, Let us send men before us, and let them search out the land for us, and bring us back word concerning the way by which we should ascend into it, and the cities to which we should come.
1:23And the matter was good in my sight, and I took twelve men from you, one man for each tribe.
1:24Then they turned and ascended to the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.
1:25And they took in their hand some of the fruit of the land, and brought it down to us, and brought us back word, and said, The land is good which the LORD our God is giving to us.
1:26But you were not willing to ascend, and you rebelled against the mouth of the LORD your God.
1:27And you grumbled in your tents and said, “Because the LORD hated us, He brought us out of the land of Egypt to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.
1:28Where are we going? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we are; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and we also saw the descendants of Anak there.’
1:29Then I said to you, Do not be terrified, nor be afraid of them.
1:30The LORD your God, who is going before you—He shall fight for you, according to all that He did for you in Egypt before your eyes,
1:31and in the wilderness, where you saw that the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way which you went until you came to this place.
1:32Yet in this matter you did not trust the LORD your God,
1:33who was going before you in the way, to search out for you a place for you to camp, in fire by night to show you the way in which you should go, and in a cloud by day.
1:34Then the LORD heard the voice of your words, and He was angry, and swore, saying,
1:35Not one of these men of this bad generation shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers,
1:36except Caleb son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him I will give the land on which he has trodden, and to his sons, because he has followed the LORD fully.
1:37Moreover, the LORD was angry with me also for your sake, saying, You also shall not go in there.
1:38Joshua son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there; strengthen him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
1:39And your children, whom you said would become plunder, and your sons who today do not know good from evil—they shall enter there. I will give it to them, and they shall possess it.
1:40But you, turn and set out toward the wilderness, by the way of the Sea of Reeds.
1:41Then you answered and said to me, We have sinned against the LORD. We will ascend and fight, according to all that the LORD our God has commanded us. And each of you strapped on his weapons of war, and you were ready to ascend into the hill country.
1:42Then the LORD said to me, Say to them, You shall not ascend, nor fight, for I am not among you, lest you be struck before your enemies.
1:43And I spoke to you, but you did not hear; and you rebelled against the mouth of the LORD, and acted presumptuously, and ascended into the hill country.
1:44Then the Amorites who dwelt in that hill country came out to meet you, and they pursued you as bees do, and struck you in Seir, even to Hormah.
1:45Then you returned and wept before the LORD, but the LORD did not listen to your voice, nor did He heed you.
1:46Then you dwelt in Kadesh many days, according to the days which you dwelt there.

Chapter 2

2:1Then we turned and journeyed into the wilderness, by the way of the Sea of Reeds, as the LORD had spoken to me; and we went around Mount Seir many days.
2:2Then the LORD spoke to me, saying,
2:3You have gone around this mountain long enough; turn yourselves northward.
2:4and command the people, saying, “You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers, the sons of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore watch yourselves carefully.
2:5You shall not strive with them, for I will not give you any of their land—not even the space for the sole of a foot; for I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.
2:6You shall buy food from them for money, and eat; and you shall also buy water from them for money, and drink.
2:7For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.”
2:8Then we passed by from our brothers, the sons of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, by the way of the Arabah, by Elath and by Ezion-geber; and we turned and passed over by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
2:9Then the LORD said to me, Do not harass Moab, nor contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession; for I have given Ar to the sons of Lot for a possession.
2:10The Emim formerly lived in it, a people great, and numerous, and tall as the Anakim.
2:11They also were also regarded as Rephaim, like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim.
2:12The Horites formerly lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them from before them and lived in their place, just as Israel did to the land of its possession, which the LORD gave to them.
2:13Now rise and pass over the Brook of Zered for yourselves. So we passed over the Brook of Zered.
2:14And the days in which we traveled from Kadesh-Barnea until we passed over the Brook of Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of battle perished from the midst of the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.
2:15And indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were gone.
2:16Then it happened, when all the men of battle had perished from the midst of the people,
2:17that the LORD spoke to me, saying,
2:18Today you are passing over the border of Moab, even Ar.
2:19And when you approach the Ammonites, you shall not distress them, nor contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the Ammonites for a possession; for I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.
2:20It also is reckoned as a land of Rephaim; Rephaim formerly lived in it, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummites,
2:21a people great, and numerous, and tall as the Anakim. But the LORD destroyed them from before them, and they dispossessed them, and lived in their place,
2:22as He did for the sons of Esau who dwelt in Seir, when He destroyed the Horim from before them, and they dispossessed them, and lived in their place to this day.
2:23And as for the Avim, who dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim—who came out from Caphtor—destroyed them, and lived in their place.
2:24Rise, journey, and pass over the Brook of Arnon. See, I have given into your hand Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorites, and his land. Begin to possess it, and stir yourself up against him in battle.
2:25This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the peoples under the whole heavens. When they hear the report of you, they shall tremble and writhe because of you.”
2:26Then I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying,
2:27Let me pass over through your land; I will travel only by the road. I will not turn aside to the right or to the left.
2:28You shall sell me food for money, and I will eat; and you shall give me water for money, and I will drink. Only let me pass through on foot,
2:29as the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, have done for me, until I pass over the Jordan to the land which the LORD our God is giving to us.
2:30But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart stubborn, that He might give him into your hand, as it is this day.
2:31Then the LORD said to me, “See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession of his land.”
2:32Then Sihon came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Jahaz.
2:33And the LORD our God gave him over to us, and we struck him, his sons, and all his people.
2:34And we captured all his cities at that time, and devoted every city to destruction—men, and women, and children. We left no remnant.
2:35Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we had captured.
2:36From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Brook of Arnon, and from the city in the valley, even to Gilead, there was no city too strong for us; the LORD our God gave all of them over to us.
2:37Only you did not approach the land of the Ammonites, to any part of the Torrent of Jabbok, or to the cities of the hill country, or to anything which the LORD our God had not commanded.

Chapter 3

3:1Then we turned and ascended by the way to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei.
3:2Then the LORD said to me, Do not fear him, for I have given him, and all his people, and his land into your hand; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon.
3:3Then the LORD our God indeed gave Og king of Bashan and all his people into our hand, and we struck him until no remnant was left to him.
3:4And we captured all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them—sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
3:5All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages.
3:6And we devoted them, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting the men, the women, and the children of every city.
3:7And all the livestock, and the spoil of the cities, we took as spoil for ourselves.
3:8Then at that time we took the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, from the Brook of Arnon to Mount Hermon
3:9(the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amoritess call it Senir),
3:10all the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
3:11For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? It was nine cubits long and four cubits wide, by the common cubit.
3:12And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the Brook of Arnon, and half of Mount Gilead and its cities, I gave to the Reubenite and to the Gadite.
3:13And the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan—it is called the land of the Rephaim.
3:14Jair son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, as far as the border of the Geshurite and the Maacathite, namely Bashan, and called them by his own name, Jair’s Villages, to this day.
3:15And I gave Gilead to Machir.
3:16And to the Reubenite and to the Gadite I gave from Gilead even to the Brook of Arnon, the middle of the valley and the border, even to the Torrent of Jabbok, the border of the sons of Ammon;
3:17and the Arabah also, with the Jordan as its border, from Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, beneath the Slopes of Pisgah toward the east.
3:18And at that time I commanded you, saying, The LORD your God has given you this land to possess it; you shall pass over armed before your brothers, the sons of Israel, all the men of valor.
3:19Only your wives, and your children, and your livestock—I know that you have much livestock—shall dwell in your cities which I have given to you,
3:20until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as to yourselves, and they also possess the land which the LORD your God is giving to them beyond the Jordan; then each of you shall return to his possession which I have given to you.
3:21And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Your eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings; so the LORD will do to all the kingdoms to which you are passing over.
3:22Do not fear them, for the LORD your God—He is fighting for you.
3:23And I pleaded with the LORD at that time, saying,
3:24“Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do according to Your works and Your mighty deeds?
3:25Please let me pass over and see the good land which is beyond the Jordan, this pleasant hill country, and Lebanon.
3:26But the LORD was angry with me because of you, and did not listen to me; and the LORD said to me, Enough!. Do not speak to Me again concerning this matter.
3:27Ascend to the top of Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and see with your eyes; for you shall not pass over this Jordan.
3:28But charge Joshua, and strengthen and encourage him, for he shall cross over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land that you see.”
3:29Then we dwelt in a valley opposite Beth-peor.

Chapter 4

4:1“And now, Israel, listen to the statutes and judgments that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live, enter, and possess the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
4:2You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, to keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I am commanding you.
4:3Your eyes have seen what the LORD did in Baal-Peor; for every man who went after Baal-Peor, the LORD your God destroyed him from your midst.
4:4But you who hold fast to the LORD your God are all alive today.
4:5See, I have taught you statutes and judgments, as the LORD my God commanded me, to observe them in the land to which you are going in to possess it.
4:6And you shall keep and do them, for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
4:7For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the LORD our God is, in whenever we call upon Him?
4:8And what great nation is there that has righteous statutes and judgments according to all this law which I am setting before you today?
4:9Only take care and guard your soul diligently, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your grandchildren.
4:10Do not forget the day when you stood before the LORD your God in Horeb, when the LORD said to me, Assemble the people to Me, and I will cause them to hear My words, so that they may learn to fear Me for all time that they live on the ground, and may teach their sons.
4:11Then you drew near and stood under the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire to the heart of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.
4:12And the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but you saw no likeness—only a voice.
4:13And He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to observe—the Ten Commandments—and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.
4:14And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that you might observe them in the land to which you are passing over to possess it.
4:15Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, for you saw no likeness on the day when the LORD spoke to you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire,
4:16lest you act corruptly, and make for yourselves a carved image, the likeness of any figure: the form of male or female,
4:17the form of any beast which is on the earth, the form of any winged bird which flies in the heavens,
4:18the form of anything creeping on the ground, the form of any fish which is in the waters below the earth.
4:19And beware lest you lift your eyes to heaven and see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of the heavens, and be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them—things the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heavens.
4:20But the LORD took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of His own inheritance, as you are this day.
4:21And the LORD was angry with me because of your words, and swore that I should not pass over the Jordan, and that I should not go into the good land which the LORD your God is giving to you for an inheritance.
4:22For I am dying in this land; I am not passing over the Jordan. But you are passing over, and shall possess this good land.
4:23Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a carved image, the likeness of anything concerning which the LORD your God has charged you.
4:24For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a Jealous God.
4:25When you beget sons and grandchildren, and you have lived long in the land, and act corruptly, and make a carved image, the likeness of anything, and do what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, to provoke Him to anger,
4:26I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day that you shall soon utterly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You shall not remain long in it, but shall be utterly destroyed.
4:27And the LORD shall scatter you among the peoples, and you shall be left few in number among the nations to which the LORD leads you.
4:28And there you shall serve gods, the work of human hands, wood and stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
4:29And from there you shall seek the LORD your God, and you shall find Him when you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
4:30When you are in distress and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you shall return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.
4:31for the LORD your God is a compassionate God—He will not abandon you, nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.
4:32For ask now concerning former days which were before you, from the day that God created man on the earth, and from one end of heaven to the other, whether there has been anything like this great thing, or whether anything like it has been heard.
4:33Has any people heard the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and lived?
4:34Or has any god ever attempted to take for Himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, signs, wonders, war, a strong hand, an outstretched arm, and great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
4:35You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him.
4:36From the heavens He caused you to hear His voice, to instruct you; and upon the earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the midst of the fire.
4:37And because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants after them, and brought you out in His presence, by His great power, from Egypt,
4:38to dispossess nations greater and stronger than you from before you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.
4:39Know therefore today, and take it to heart, that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.
4:40And you shall keep His statutes and His commandments, which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for all time.”
4:41Then Moses separated three cities beyond the Jordan, toward the east,
4:42for the manslayer to flee there, who had slain his neighbor unknowingly, though he had not hated him before; and he might flee to one of these cities and live:
4:43Bezer in the wilderness, in the land of the plain, for the Reubenite; and Ramoth-gilead for the Gadite; and Golan in Bashan for the Manassite.
4:44And this is the law which Moses set before the sons of Israel.
4:45These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spoke to the sons of Israel when they came out of Egypt,
4:46beyond the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, whom Moses and the sons of Israel struck when they came out of Egypt.
4:47And they possessed his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan toward the east,
4:48from Aroer, which is by the edge of the Brook of Arnon, as far as Mount Sion, that is, Hermon,
4:49and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even to the Sea of the Arabah, beneath the Slopes of Pisgah.

Chapter 5

5:1Then Moses called all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the judgments which I am speaking in your hearing today. Learn them, and be careful to do them.
5:2The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.
5:3The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us—with all of us who are alive here today.
5:4The LORD spoke with you face to face on the mountain, out of the midst of the fire.
5:5I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare the word of the LORD to you, for you were afraid of the fire and did not ascend the mountain. And He said:
5:6I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
5:7You shall have no other gods before Me.
5:8You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything in the heavens above, or on the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth.
5:9You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a Jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate Me,
5:10but showing steadfast love to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
5:11You shall not take the Name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold guiltless anyone who takes His Name in vain.
5:12Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.
5:13Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
5:14but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You shall not do any work—you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your maidservant, your ox, or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or your sojourner who is within your gates—so that your male servant and your maidservant may rest as you do.
5:15And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD your God brought you out from there by a strong hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
5:16Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that your days may be prolonged, and so that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
5:17You shall not murder.
5:18And you shall not commit adultery.
5:19And you shall not steal.
5:20And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
5:21And you shall not desire your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not covet your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his maidservant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
5:22The LORD spoke these words to all your assembly on the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a great voice; and He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
5:23And when you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me—all the heads of your tribes and your elders.
5:24And you said, Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen that God speaks with man, yet he lives.
5:25And now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the LORD our God again, then we shall die.
5:26For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?
5:27You draw near and hear all that the LORD our God says; then you shall speak to us all that the LORD our God speaks to you, and we will listen and do it.
5:28Then the LORD heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and the LORD said to me, I have heard the words which this people has spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken.
5:29Oh, that they had such a heart as this always—to fear Me and keep all My commandments—so that it might go well with them and with their sons forever!
5:30Go, say to them, Return to your tents.
5:31But you, stand here with Me, and I will speak to you all the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land which I am giving them to possess.
5:32Therefore be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left.
5:33You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live, and it may go well with you, and you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.”

Chapter 6

6:1And this is the commandment—the statutes and the judgments—which the LORD your God commanded me to teach you, so that you may do them in the land to which you are passing over to possess it,
6:2so that you may fear the LORD your God, keeping all His statutes and His commandments which I am commanding you—you, and your son, and your son’s son—all the days of your life, and so that your days may be prolonged.
6:3Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
6:4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God—the LORD is one.
6:5And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.
6:6And these words which I am commanding you today shall be upon your heart.
6:7And you shall teach them diligently to your sons, and speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk in the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
6:8And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as bands between your eyes.
6:9And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
6:10And it shall be, when the LORD your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob—to give you—great and good cities which you did not build,
6:11and houses full of every good thing which you did not fill, and cisterns hewn which you did not hew, vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant—and you eat and are satisfied—
6:12take heed to yourself, lest you forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
6:13You shall fear the LORD your God, and Him you shall serve, and by His Name you shall swear.
6:14You shall not go after other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who are around you,
6:15for the LORD your God is a Jealous God in your midst, lest the anger of the LORD your God burn against you and He destroy you from the face of the ground.
6:16You shall not test the LORD your God, as you tested Him at Massah.
6:17You shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His testimonies, and His statutes, which He commanded you.
6:18And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, so that it may go well with you, and you may go in and possess the good land which the LORD swore to your fathers,
6:19by driving out all your enemies from before you, as the LORD has spoken.
6:20When your son asks you in time to come, saying, What are the testimonies, the statutes, and the judgments which the LORD our God commanded you?
6:21then you shall say to your son, We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand.
6:22And the LORD gave great and grievous signs and wonders against Egypt, against Pharaoh, and against all his house, before our eyes.
6:23And He brought us out from there, so that He might bring us in and give us the land which He swore to our fathers.
6:24And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, to preserve us alive, as we are this day.
6:25And it shall be righteousness for us if we are careful to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as He commanded us.

Chapter 7

7:1When the LORD your God brings you into the land to which you are going in to possess it, and drives out many nations from before you—the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mighty than you—
7:2and the LORD your God gives them over to you, and you strike them, you shall utterly devote them to destruction. You shall make no covenant with them, nor show them favor.
7:3And you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughter to his son, nor take his daughter for your son,
7:4for he will turn your son away from following Me, and they will serve other gods; then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and He will quickly destroy you.
7:5But thus you shall do to them: you shall break down their altars, shatter their pillars, cut down their sacred poles, and burn their carved images with fire.
7:6For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be His treasured possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the ground.
7:7The LORD set His love upon you and chose you, not because you were more numerous than any of the peoples—for you were the fewest of all the peoples—
7:8but because the LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your fathers. The LORD brought you out by a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
7:9And you shall know that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations,
7:10and repays those who hate Him to their face, destroying them. He does not delay toward one who hates Him; He repays him to his face.
7:11Therefore you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them.
7:12And because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, the LORD your God shall keep with you the covenant and steadfast love which He swore to your fathers.
7:13And He shall love you, bless you, and multiply you; He shall bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground—your grain, your new wine, and your oil—the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock, on the land which He swore to your fathers to give you.
7:14You shall be blessed above all the peoples; there shall not be a barren male or female among you, nor among your livestock.
7:15And the LORD shall turn every sickness away from you, and He shall put none of the evil diseases of Egypt which you have known upon you; but He shall put them upon all who hate you.
7:16And you shall consume all the peoples whom the LORD your God is giving over to you. Your eye shall not pity them, and you shall not serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.
7:17If you say in your heart, These nations are more numerous than I; how can I dispossess them?
7:18you shall not be afraid of them; you shall surely remember what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt—
7:19the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs, the wonders, the strong hand, and the outstretched arm by which the LORD your God brought you out. So shall the LORD your God do to all the peoples whom you fear.
7:20Moreover, the LORD your God shall send the hornet among them, until even those who are left and hide themselves from you are destroyed.
7:21You shall not be terrified by them, for the LORD your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God.
7:22And the LORD your God shall drive out these nations from before you little by little. You shall not make an end of them quickly, lest the beasts of the field multiply against you.
7:23But the LORD your God shall give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed.
7:24And He shall give their kings into your hand, and you shall destroy their name from under the heavens. No one shall stand before you until you have destroyed them.
7:25You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire. You shall not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it for yourself, lest you be ensnared by it; for it is an abomination to the LORD your God.
7:26And you shall not bring an abomination into your house, lest you become devoted to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest it and utterly abhor it, for it is devoted to destruction.

Chapter 8

8:1The whole commandment which I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, so that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to your fathers.
8:2And you shall remember all the way by which the LORD your God led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
8:3And He humbled you, and caused you to hunger, and fed you with manna, which you had not known, nor had your fathers known, in order to make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.
8:4Your garment did not wear out upon you, and your foot did not swell, these forty years.
8:5Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
8:6Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, walking in His ways and fearing Him.
8:7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of streams of water, of fountains and deep waters flowing out in valleys and hills;
8:8a land of wheat and barley, of vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey;
8:9a land in which you shall eat bread without scarcity, and lack nothing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you shall dig bronze.
8:10And you shall eat and be satisfied, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.
8:11Take heed to yourself, lest you forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes, which I am commanding you today;
8:12lest, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and dwelt in them,
8:13and your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies,
8:14then your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;
8:15who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with fiery serpents and scorpions, and thirsty ground where there was no water; who brought water out for you from the flinty rock;
8:16who fed you with manna in the wilderness, which your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, to do you good in the end;
8:17lest you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand have made this wealth for me.
8:18But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to gain wealth, in order to establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
8:19And it shall be, if you ever forget the LORD your God, and go after other gods, and serve them, and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you shall surely perish.
8:20Like the nations which the LORD is destroying from before you, so shall you perish, because you would not listen to the voice of the LORD your God.

Chapter 9

9:1Hear, O Israel: You are passing over the Jordan today, to go in and dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, with cities great and fortified up to the heavens,
9:2a people great and tall, the descendants of Anak, whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?
9:3Know therefore today that the LORD your God is He who is passing over before you as a consuming fire. He shall destroy them and subdue them before you; and you shall dispossess them and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has spoken to you.
9:4Do not say in your heart, after the LORD your God has driven them out from before you, Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land; rather, because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD is dispossessing them from before you.
9:5It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to possess their land; rather, because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God is dispossessing them from before you, and in order to establish the word which the LORD swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
9:6Know therefore that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
9:7Remember, and do not forget, how you made the LORD your God angry in the wilderness. From the day that you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD.
9:8Even at Horeb you made the LORD angry, and the LORD was angry enough with you to destroy you.
9:9When I ascended the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with you, I remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water.
9:10Then the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone, written with the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the LORD had spoken with you on the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, on the day of the assembly.
9:11And it came to pass, at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.
9:12Then the LORD said to me, Rise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made a cast-metal image for themselves.
9:13Then the LORD spoke to me, saying, I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.
9:14Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under the heavens; and I will make of you a nation mightier and more numerous than they.
9:15Then I turned and came down from the mountain, while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.
9:16And I saw, and behold, you had sinned against the LORD your God; you had made a cast-metal calf for yourselves. You had quickly turned aside from the way which the LORD had commanded you.
9:17Then I seized the two tablets and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.
9:18And I fell down before the LORD, as at first, forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin which you had committed by doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger.
9:19For I was afraid because of the anger and wrath with which the LORD was angry against you, to destroy you. But the LORD listened to me that time also.
9:20And the LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; and I prayed for Aaron also at that time.
9:21And I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire, and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was fine as dust; and I cast its dust into the brook which flowed down from the mountain.
9:22And at Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth-Hattaavah, you made the LORD angry.
9:23And when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-Barnea, saying, Ascend and possess the land which I have given you, then you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God, and did not trust Him or listen to His voice.
9:24You have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.
9:25So I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights—I fell down because the LORD had said He would destroy you.
9:26And I prayed to the LORD and said, Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance, whom You redeemed through Your greatness, whom You brought out of Egypt with a strong hand.
9:27Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not look upon the stubbornness of this people, nor upon their wickedness or their sin,
9:28lest the land from which You brought us say, Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land of which He had spoken to them, and because He hated them, He brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.
9:29Yet they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm.

Chapter 10

10:1At that time the LORD said to me, Hew for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and come up to Me on the mountain; and make for yourself an ark of wood.
10:2And I will write on the tablets the words which were on the first tablets, which you broke; and you shall place them in the Ark.
10:3Then I made an ark of acacia wood, and hewed two tablets of stone like the first, and ascended the mountain with the two tablets in my hand.
10:4And He wrote on the tablets, according to the first writing, the Ten Commandments which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, on the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them to me.
10:5Then I turned and came down from the mountain, and placed the tablets in the Ark which I had made; and they are there, as the LORD commanded me.
10:6And the sons of Israel journeyed from Beeroth Bene-Jaakan to Moserah. Aaron died there and was buried there, and his son Eleazar served as priest in his place.
10:7From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of streams of water.
10:8At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to serve Him, and to bless in His Name, to this day.
10:9Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD Himself is his inheritance, as the LORD your God spoke to him.
10:10And I remained on the mountain, as in the former days, forty days and forty nights; and the LORD listened to me also at that time. The LORD was not willing to destroy you.
10:11Then the LORD said to me, Rise, go on your journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
10:12And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
10:13keeping the commandments of the LORD and His statutes, which I am commanding you today, for your good?
10:14Behold, the heavens, even the highest heavens, belong to the LORD your God, and the earth and all that is in it.
10:15Yet the LORD set His love upon your fathers and loved them; and He chose their descendants after them—you, out of all the peoples, as it is this day.
10:16Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no more.
10:17For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who shows no partiality and takes no bribe.
10:18He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.
10:19And you shall love the sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.
10:20You shall fear the LORD your God; Him you shall serve, to Him you shall cling, and by His Name you shall swear.
10:21He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen.
10:22Your fathers went down to Egypt with seventy persons, and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of the heavens.

Chapter 11

11:1And you shall love the LORD your God, and keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments always.
11:2Know today that it was not your sons who knew or saw the discipline of the LORD your God—His greatness, His strong hand, and His outstretched arm,
11:3His signs and His works which He did in the midst of Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to all his land,
11:4and what He did to the army of Egypt, to its horses and its chariots, when He caused the waters of the Sea of Reeds to flow over them as they pursued after you, and the LORD destroyed them to this day;
11:5and what He did to you in the wilderness until you came to this place;
11:6and what He did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab son of Reuben, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, their tents, and every living thing that followed them, in the midst of all Israel—
11:7but your own eyes have seen all the great work of the LORD which He has done.
11:8Therefore you shall keep the whole commandment which I am commanding you today, so that you may be strong, and go in and possess the land to which you are passing over,
11:9and so that you may prolong your days on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give to them and to their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.
11:10For the land to which you are going in to possess it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you came out, where you sowed your seed and watered it with your foot, like a garden of herbs.
11:11But the land to which you are passing over to possess it is a land of hills and valleys; it drinks water from the rain of the heavens,
11:12a land which the LORD your God cares for. The eyes of the LORD your God are continually upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
11:13And it shall be, if you diligently listen to My commandments which I am commanding you today, to love the LORD your God and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul,
11:14then I will give the rain of your land in its season—the autumn rain and the spring rain—and you shall gather your grain, your new wine, and your oil.
11:15And I will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be satisfied.
11:16Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be enticed, and you turn aside and serve other gods and bow down to them,
11:17and the anger of the LORD burn against you, and He shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, and the ground yields no produce, and you perish quickly from the good land which the LORD is giving you.
11:18And you shall place these words of Mine upon your heart and upon your soul, and bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as bands between your eyes.
11:19And you shall teach them to your sons, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk in the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
11:20And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,
11:21so that your days and the days of your sons may be multiplied on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.
11:22For if you diligently keep all this commandment which I am commanding you to do—to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, and to cling to Him—
11:23then the LORD shall drive out all these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess nations greater and mightier than you.
11:24Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours: from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the Western Sea, shall be your territory.
11:25No one shall stand before you; the LORD your God shall put the dread and fear of you upon all the land on which you tread, as He has spoken to you.
11:26See, today I am setting before you a blessing and a curse:
11:27the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God which I am commanding you today;
11:28and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.
11:29And it shall be, when the LORD your God brings you into the land to which you are going in to possess it, that you shall set the blessing upon Mount Gerizim and the curse upon Mount Ebal.
11:30Are they not beyond the Jordan, toward the setting of the sun, in the land of the Canaanites who dwell in the Arabah opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks of Moreh?
11:31For you are passing over the Jordan to go in and possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall possess it and dwell in it.
11:32And you shall be careful to do all the statutes and the judgments which I am setting before you today.

Chapter 12

12:1These are the statutes and the judgments which you shall be careful to do in the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess, all the days that you live upon the ground.
12:2You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations which you are dispossessing served their gods, upon the high mountains, upon the hills, and under every green tree.
12:3And you shall break down their altars, shatter their pillars, burn their sacred poles with fire, cut down the carved images of their gods, and destroy their name from that place.
12:4You shall not do so to the LORD your God.
12:5Rather, you shall seek the place which the LORD your God chooses out of all your tribes to set His Name there and make it His dwelling; and there you shall go.
12:6And there you shall bring your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the contribution from your hand, your vows, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.
12:7And there you shall eat before the LORD your God; and you and your households shall rejoice in all to which you put your hand, because the LORD your God has blessed you.
12:8You shall not do according to all that we are doing here today—each doing whatever is right in his own eyes—
12:9for until now you have not come to the rest and to the inheritance which the LORD your God is giving you.
12:10But when you have passed over the Jordan and dwell in the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and He gives you rest from all your enemies around you, so that you dwell securely,
12:11then you shall bring to the place which the LORD your God chooses to make His Name dwell there all that I am commanding you: your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the contribution from your hand, and all your choice vows which you vow to the LORD.
12:12And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God—you, your sons, your daughters, your male servants, your maidservants, and the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no portion or inheritance with you.
12:13Take heed to yourself, lest you offer your burnt offerings in any place that you see.
12:14Rather, in the place which the LORD chooses in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I am commanding you.
12:15Nevertheless, according to all the desire of your soul, you may slaughter and eat flesh within all your gates, according to the blessing which the LORD your God has given you. The unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as they eat the gazelle and the deer.
12:16Only, you shall not eat the blood; you shall pour it on the earth as water.
12:17You may not eat within your gates the tithe of your grain, your new wine, or your oil, or the firstborn of your herd or your flock, or any of your vows which you vow, or your freewill offerings, or the contribution from your hand.
12:18But you shall eat them before the LORD your God in the place which the LORD your God chooses—you, your son, your daughter, your male servant, your maidservant, and the Levite who is within your gates; and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God in all to which you put your hand.
12:19Take heed to yourself, lest you forsake the Levite all your days in your land.
12:20When the LORD your God enlarges your border, as He has spoken to you, and you say, Let me eat flesh, because your soul desires to eat flesh, you may eat flesh according to all the desire of your soul.
12:21If the place which the LORD your God chooses to put His Name there is far from you, then you shall slaughter from your herd and from your flock which the LORD has given you, as I have commanded you, and you shall eat within your gates according to all the desire of your soul.
12:22Just as the gazelle and the deer are eaten, so you shall eat it; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it.
12:23Only be steadfast not to eat the blood, for the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life with the flesh.
12:24You shall not eat it; you shall pour it on the earth as water.
12:25You shall not eat it, so that it may go well with you and with your sons after you, when you do what is right in the sight of the LORD.
12:26Only your holy things which you have, and your vows, you shall take and go to the place which the LORD chooses.
12:27And you shall offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the LORD your God, and you shall eat the flesh.
12:28Be careful to obey all these words which I am commanding you, so that it may go well with you and with your sons after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God.
12:29When the LORD your God cuts off the nations from before you, which you are going in to dispossess, and you have dispossessed them and dwell in their land,
12:30take heed to yourself, lest you be ensnared to follow them after they have been destroyed from before you, and lest you inquire about their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods, that I also may do the same?
12:31You shall not do so to the LORD your God; for every abomination which the LORD hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.

Chapter 13

13:1Every word that I am commanding you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to it or take away from it.
13:2When a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder,
13:3and the sign or wonder of which he spoke to you comes to pass, and he says, Let us go after other gods, which you have not known, and let us serve them,
13:4you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
13:5You shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear Him, and keep His commandments, and listen to His voice, and serve Him, and cling to Him.
13:6And that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, for he has spoken rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to turn you aside from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall put away the evil from your midst.
13:7When your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known,
13:8from among the gods of the peoples who are around you, near to you or far from you, from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth,
13:9you shall not consent to him or listen to him; your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him.
13:10But you shall surely put him to death; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people.
13:11And you shall stone him with stones, and he shall die, because he sought to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
13:12And all Israel shall hear and fear, and shall not again do such an evil thing among you.
13:13When you hear it said concerning one of your cities, which the LORD your God is giving you to dwell in,
13:14Worthless men have gone out from your midst and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known,
13:15then you shall inquire, and search, and ask diligently; and behold, if the matter is true and established, that this abomination has been done among you,
13:16you shall surely strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, devoting it to destruction, with all that is in it and its livestock, by the edge of the sword.
13:17And you shall gather all its spoil into the midst of its square, and burn the city and all its spoil completely with fire for the LORD your God; and it shall be a lasting heap. It shall never be built again.
13:18And nothing from what is devoted to destruction shall remain in your hand, so that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of His anger, and show you compassion, and have compassion on you, and multiply you, as He swore to your fathers,
13:19when you listen to the voice of the LORD your God, to keep all His commandments which I am commanding you today, and to do what is right in the sight of the LORD your God.

Chapter 14

14:1You are sons of the LORD your God; you shall not cut yourselves or make a bald place between your eyes for the dead.
14:2For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for His treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are upon the face of the earth.
14:3You shall not eat any detestable thing.
14:4These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,
14:5the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.
14:6And every animal that divides the hoof, having the hoof wholly split in two, and that brings up the cud among the animals—you may eat it.
14:7Only these you shall not eat among those that bring up the cud or among those that divide the split hoof: the camel, the hare, and the hyrax; for they bring up the cud, but do not divide the hoof. They are unclean to you.
14:8And the pig, because it divides the hoof but does not bring up the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat their flesh or touch their carcasses.
14:9These you may eat of all that are in the waters: anything that has fins and scales you may eat.
14:10But anything that does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean to you.
14:11Any clean bird you may eat.
14:12But these are those of which you shall not eat: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
14:13the kite, the falcon, and the vulture according to its kind,
14:14every raven according to its kind,
14:15the ostrich, the nightjar, the gull, and the hawk according to its kind,
14:16the little owl, the great owl, and the barn owl,
14:17the pelican, the Egyptian vulture, and the cormorant,
14:18the stork, the heron according to its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.
14:19And every winged swarming thing is unclean to you; they shall not be eaten.
14:20Any clean bird you may eat.
14:21You shall not eat anything that dies of itself; you may give it to the sojourner who is within your gates, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner; for you are a holy people to the LORD your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.
14:22You shall surely tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year.
14:23And you shall eat before the LORD your God, in the place where He chooses to cause His Name to dwell, the tithe of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and your flock, so that you may learn to fear the LORD your God all your days.
14:24And if the journey is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry it, because the place which the LORD your God chooses to put His Name there is too far from you, when the LORD your God blesses you,
14:25then you shall exchange it for money, bind up the money in your hand, and go to the place which the LORD your God chooses.
14:26And you shall spend the money on whatever your soul desires—for cattle, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink, or whatever your soul desires—and you shall eat there before the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household.
14:27And as for the Levite who is within your gates, you shall not forsake him, for he has no portion or inheritance with you.
14:28At the end of every three years you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in that year and lay it up within your gates.
14:29And the Levite shall come, for he has no portion or inheritance with you, and the sojourner, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your gates; and they shall eat and be satisfied, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.

Chapter 15

15:1At the end of every seven years you shall make a release.
15:2And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor. He shall not exact it from his neighbor or his brother, for the LORD’s release has been proclaimed.
15:3You may exact it from a foreigner, but your hand shall release whatever of yours is with your brother.
15:4However, there shall be no poor among you, for the LORD will surely bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess,
15:5if only you diligently listen to the voice of the LORD your God, to be careful to do all this commandment which I am commanding you today.
15:6For the LORD your God will bless you, as He has spoken to you; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.
15:7When there is among you a poor man, one of your brothers, within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother.
15:8Rather, you shall surely open your hand to him, and shall surely lend him enough for his need, whatever he lacks.
15:9Take heed to yourself, lest there be a worthless thought in your heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is near, and you look with an evil eye upon your poor brother and give him nothing; then he cries to the LORD against you, and it becomes sin in you.
15:10You shall surely give to him, and your heart shall not begrudge it when you give to him; for because of this matter the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything to which you put your hand.
15:11For the poor shall never cease from the land; therefore I am commanding you, saying, You shall surely open your hand to your brother, to your poor and needy in your land.
15:12When your Hebrew brother, a man or a woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you shall send the servant away free from you.
15:13And when you send the servant away free from you, you shall not send the servant away empty.
15:14You shall furnish the servant liberally from your flock, from your threshing floor, and from your winepress; from that with which the LORD your God has blessed you, you shall give.
15:15And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you; therefore I am commanding you this thing today.
15:16And it shall be, if he says to you, I will not go out from you, because he loves you and your household, because he fares well with you,
15:17then you shall take an awl and put it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your servant permanently. And you shall do the same to your female servant.
15:18It shall not seem hard to you when you send him away free from you, for he has served you six years at twice the wages of a hired worker. And the LORD your God will bless you in all that you do.
15:19Every firstborn male that is born of your herd and of your flock you shall consecrate to the LORD your God. You shall not work with the firstborn of your ox, nor shear the firstborn of your flock.
15:20You shall eat it before the LORD your God year by year, in the place which the LORD chooses, you and your household.
15:21But if there is a blemish in it, if it is lame or blind, or has any serious blemish, you shall not sacrifice it to the LORD your God.
15:22You shall eat it within your gates; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as they eat the gazelle and the deer.
15:23Only, you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it on the earth like water.

Chapter 16

16:1Observe the month of Abib, and keep the Passover to the LORD your God; for in the month of Abib the LORD your God brought you out of Egypt by night.
16:2And you shall sacrifice the Passover to the LORD your God, from the flock and the herd, in the place which the LORD chooses to cause His Name to dwell there.
16:3You shall not eat leavened bread with it. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread with it, the bread of affliction, for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste, so that you may remember the day when you came out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life.
16:4And no leaven shall be seen with you within all your border for seven days, nor shall any of the flesh which you sacrifice in the evening on the first day remain until morning.
16:5You may not sacrifice the Passover within any of your gates which the LORD your God is giving you,
16:6but at the place which the LORD your God chooses to cause His Name to dwell. There you shall sacrifice the Passover in the evening, at sunset, at the time when you came out of Egypt.
16:7And you shall cook and eat it in the place which the LORD your God chooses; and in the morning you shall turn and go to your tents.
16:8Six days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a solemn assembly to the LORD your God; you shall do no work.
16:9You shall count seven weeks for yourself; from the time the sickle is first put to the standing grain you shall begin to count seven weeks.
16:10And you shall keep the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God with a freewill offering from your hand, which you shall give in proportion as the LORD your God blesses you.
16:11And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God—you, and your son, and your daughter, and your male servant, and your maidservant, and the Levite who is within your gates, and the sojourner, and the orphan, and the widow, who are among you—in the place which the LORD your God chooses to cause His Name to dwell there.
16:12And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and you shall be careful to do these statutes.
16:13You shall keep the Feast of Booths seven days, when you gather in from your threshing floor and from your winepress.
16:14And you shall rejoice in your feast—you, and your son, and your daughter, and your male servant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the sojourner, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your gates.
16:15Seven days you shall celebrate a feast to the LORD your God in the place which the LORD chooses; for the LORD your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, and you shall surely rejoice.
16:16Three times in a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Booths. And they shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed;
16:17each shall give according to the gift of his hand, according to the blessing which the LORD your God has given you.
16:18You shall appoint judges and officers for yourself within all your gates which the LORD your God is giving you, according to your tribes; and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.
16:19You shall not pervert judgment; you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.
16:20Righteousness, righteousness you shall pursue, so that you may live and possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
16:21You shall not plant for yourself any sacred pole of any kind of tree beside the altar of the LORD your God which you make for yourself.
16:22And you shall not set up for yourself a pillar, which the LORD your God hates.

Chapter 17

17:1You shall not sacrifice to the LORD your God an ox or sheep in which there is a blemish, any serious defect; for that is an abomination to the LORD your God.
17:2When there is found among you, within any of your gates which the LORD your God is giving you, a man or a woman who does what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God by transgressing His covenant,
17:3and has gone and served other gods and bowed down to them, or to the sun, or to the moon, or to any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded,
17:4and it is told to you, and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently; and behold, if the matter is true and established, that this abomination has been done in Israel,
17:5then you shall bring out to your gates that man or that woman who has done this evil thing—the man or the woman—and you shall stone them with stones, and they shall die.
17:6By the testimony of two witnesses or three witnesses, the one who is to die shall be put to death; that person shall not be put to death by the testimony of one witness.
17:7The hand of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you shall put away the evil from your midst.
17:8When any matter is too difficult for you in judgment, between one kind of bloodshed and another, between one kind of legal claim and another, and between one kind of assault and another—matters of dispute within your gates—then you shall arise and go up to the place which the LORD your God chooses.
17:9And you shall come to the priests, the Levites, and to the judge who is in office in those days, and inquire; and they shall declare to you the judgment.
17:10And you shall act according to the word which they declare to you from that place which the LORD chooses; and you shall be careful to do according to all that they instruct you.
17:11According to the instruction which they give you, and according to the judgment which they declare to you, you shall do. You shall not turn aside from the word which they declare to you, to the right or to the left.
17:12And the man who acts presumptuously, refusing to listen to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, or to the judge, that man shall die; and you shall put away the evil from Israel.
17:13And all the people shall hear and fear, and shall no longer act presumptuously.
17:14When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, and possess it, and dwell in it, and you say, Let me set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,
17:15you shall surely set over you a king whom the LORD your God chooses. From among your brothers you shall set a king over you; you may not set a foreigner over you, one who is not your brother.
17:16Only, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt in order to multiply horses, since the LORD has said to you, You shall never return that way again.
17:17And he shall not multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn aside; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself.
17:18And it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law from that which is before the priests, the Levites.
17:19And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, and to do them,
17:20so that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and so that he may not turn aside from the commandment, to the right or to the left, so that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his sons, in the midst of Israel.

Chapter 18

18:1The priests, the Levites—all the tribe of Levi—shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings by fire of the LORD and His inheritance.
18:2And they shall have no inheritance among their brothers; the LORD Himself is their inheritance, as He has spoken to them.
18:3And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from those who sacrifice an ox or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the stomach.
18:4You shall give him the first of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the first fleece from your flock.
18:5For the LORD your God has chosen him out of all your tribes to stand and serve in the Name of the LORD, he and his sons continually.
18:6And when a Levite comes from any of your gates out of all Israel, where he has sojourned, and comes with all the desire of his soul to the place which the LORD chooses,
18:7then he shall serve in the Name of the LORD his God, like all his brothers, the Levites, who stand there before the LORD.
18:8They shall eat equal portions, apart from what comes from the sale of his ancestral property.
18:9When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to do according to the abominations of those nations.
18:10There shall not be found among you anyone who causes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who practices divination, one who interprets omens, an enchanter, or a sorcerer,
18:11or one who casts spells, or one who consults a medium or a spiritist, or one who inquires of the dead.
18:12For everyone who does these things is an abomination to the LORD; and because of these abominations the LORD your God is dispossessing them from before you.
18:13You shall be blameless before the LORD your God.
18:14For these nations which you are dispossessing listen to interpreters of omens and to diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so.
18:15The LORD your God shall raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brothers; you shall listen to Him,
18:16according to all that you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, Do not let me hear again the voice of the LORD my God, and do not let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die.
18:17Then the LORD said to me, They have spoken well.
18:18I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brothers, and I will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
18:19And it shall be that whoever does not listen to My words which He speaks in My Name, I will require it of him.
18:20But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My Name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.
18:21And when you say in your heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?
18:22When a prophet speaks in the Name of the LORD, and the word does not come to pass or prove true, that is a word which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

Chapter 19

19:1When the LORD your God cuts off the nations whose land the LORD your God is giving you, and you have dispossessed them and dwell in their cities and in their houses,
19:2you shall set apart three cities for yourself within your land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess.
19:3You shall prepare the road for yourself and divide into three parts the territory of your land which the LORD your God is causing you to inherit, so that every manslayer may flee there.
19:4And this is the case of the manslayer who flees there and lives: whoever strikes his neighbor unintentionally, though he did not hate him formerly—
19:5as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down a tree, and the iron head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor, and he dies—he shall flee to one of these cities and live,
19:6lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer while his heart is hot, and overtake him because the way is long, and strike him mortally, though he was not worthy of death, for he did not hate him formerly.
19:7Therefore I am commanding you, saying, You shall set apart three cities for yourself.
19:8And if the LORD your God enlarges your border, as He swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land which He spoke to give to your fathers—
19:9if you are careful to do all this commandment which I am commanding you today, to love the LORD your God and to walk in His ways all your days—then you shall add three more cities for yourself besides these three,
19:10so that innocent blood is not shed in the midst of your land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and bloodguilt comes upon you.
19:11But when a man hates his neighbor, and lies in wait for him, and rises against him, and strikes him mortally so that he dies, and then flees to one of these cities,
19:12then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there, and give him into the hand of the avenger of blood, and he shall die.
19:13Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall purge the blood of the innocent from Israel, so that it may go well with you.
19:14You shall not move your neighbor’s boundary marker, which the men of old have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit in the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess.
19:15One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin, in any sin that he commits. By the testimony of two witnesses or by the testimony of three witnesses a matter shall be established.
19:16When a malicious witness rises against a man to accuse him of wrongdoing,
19:17then the two men who have the dispute shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days.
19:18And the judges shall inquire diligently; and behold, if the witness is a false witness and has testified falsely against his brother,
19:19then you shall do to him as he had intended to do to his brother. So you shall put away the evil from your midst.
19:20And those who remain shall hear and fear, and shall never again do such an evil thing among you.
19:21And your eye shall not pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Chapter 20

20:1When you go out to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots, a people more numerous than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
20:2And it shall be, when you draw near for battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,
20:3and shall say to them, Hear, O Israel: you are drawing near today to battle against your enemies. Do not let your heart grow faint; do not fear, or tremble, or be terrified before them.
20:4For the LORD your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies and to save you.
20:5And the officers shall speak to the people, saying, Who is the man who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in battle and another man dedicate it.
20:6And who is the man who has planted a vineyard and has not begun to enjoy its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in battle and another man begin to enjoy its fruit.
20:7And who is the man who is betrothed to a woman and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in battle and another man take her.
20:8And the officers shall speak further to the people and say, Who is the man who is afraid and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, so that the heart of his brothers does not melt like his heart.
20:9And it shall be, when the officers have finished speaking to the people, that they shall appoint commanders of the army at the head of the people.
20:10When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then you shall offer it terms of peace.
20:11And it shall be, if it answers you peaceably and opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall become forced labor for you and shall serve you.
20:12But if it makes no peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall lay siege to it.
20:13And the LORD your God shall give it into your hand, and you shall strike every male in it with the edge of the sword.
20:14Only the women, and the children, and the livestock, and all that is in the city—all its spoil—you shall take as plunder for yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies which the LORD your God has given you.
20:15Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far from you, which are not among the cities of these nations.
20:16Only, of the cities of these peoples which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you shall not keep alive anything that breathes.
20:17For you shall surely devote them to destruction—the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites—as the LORD your God has commanded you,
20:18so that they do not teach you to do according to all their abominations which they have done for their gods, and so you sin against the LORD your God.
20:19When you lay siege to a city many days, fighting against it to capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them, for you may eat from them; and you shall not cut them down. For is the tree of the field a man, that it should come under siege from you?
20:20Only the tree which you know is not a tree for food, you may destroy and cut down, and build siegeworks against the city that is making war with you, until it falls.

Chapter 21

21:1When one is found slain, lying in a field in the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who struck him,
21:2then your elders and your judges shall go out and measure the distance to the cities which are around the slain man.
21:3And it shall be, the city which is nearest to the slain man—the elders of that city shall take a heifer from the herd which has never been worked and which has never pulled in a yoke.
21:4And the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a valley with flowing water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and they shall break the heifer’s neck there in the valley.
21:5And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come near—for the LORD your God has chosen them to serve Him and to bless in the Name of the LORD, and by their word every dispute and every assault shall be settled—
21:6and all the elders of that city who are nearest to the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley.
21:7And they shall answer and say, Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it done.
21:8Make atonement for Your people Israel, whom You have redeemed, O LORD, and do not lay innocent bloodguilt upon Your people Israel. And the bloodguilt shall be atoned for them.
21:9And you shall put away innocent blood from your midst, for you shall do what is right in the sight of the LORD.
21:10When you go out to battle against your enemies, and the LORD your God gives them into your hand, and you take them captive,
21:11and you see among the captives a woman of beautiful form, and desire her, and would take her to yourself as a wife,
21:12then you shall bring her into your house, and she shall shave her head and trim her nails,
21:13and remove the clothing of her captivity from upon her, and dwell in your house, and mourn her father and her mother for a full month; and afterward you may go in to her and marry her, and she shall be your wife.
21:14And it shall be, if you no longer delight in her, then you shall let her go wherever she wishes. You shall surely not sell her for money; you shall not treat her as a slave, because you have violated her.
21:15When a man has two wives, one loved and the other unloved, and both the loved and the unloved have borne sons to him, and the firstborn son belongs to the unloved one,
21:16then, on the day when he causes his sons to inherit what he has, he may not treat the son of the loved one as the firstborn in place of the son of the unloved one, who is the firstborn.
21:17But he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved one, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the firstfruits of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.
21:18When a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not listen to the voice of his father or to the voice of his mother, and though they discipline him, he does not listen to them,
21:19then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his place.
21:20And they shall say to the elders of his city, This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he does not listen to our voice. He is a glutton and a drunkard.
21:21Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die. So you shall put away the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear and fear.
21:22And when a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,
21:23his corpse shall not remain all night on the tree; you shall surely bury him that day, for anyone hanged is under God’s curse. And you shall not defile your land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

Chapter 22

22:1You shall not see your brother’s ox or his sheep straying away and hide yourself from them; you shall surely bring them back to your brother.
22:2And if your brother is not near you, or you do not know him, then you shall bring it into your house, and it shall remain with you until your brother seeks it, and you shall restore it to him.
22:3And so you shall do with his donkey, and so you shall do with his garment, and so you shall do with any lost thing of your brother’s which he has lost and you have found; you may not ignore it.
22:4You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen on the way and hide yourself from them; you shall surely help him raise them up.
22:5A woman shall not wear a man’s attire, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment; for anyone who does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.
22:6When a bird’s nest happens to be before you on the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the mother is sitting upon the young ones or upon the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young.
22:7You shall surely let the mother go, but you may take the young ones for yourself, so that it may go well with you and you may prolong your days.
22:8When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, so that you do not bring bloodguilt upon your house if anyone falls from it.
22:9You shall not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, lest the full yield of the seed which you have sown and the produce of the vineyard be forfeited.
22:10You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.
22:11You shall not wear mixed fabric, wool and linen woven together.
22:12You shall make tassels for yourself on the four corners of the covering with which you cover yourself.
22:13When a man takes a wife and goes in to her, and then hates her,
22:14and brings charges of misconduct against her and gives her a bad name, and says, I took this woman, and when I drew near to her I did not find evidence of virginity in her,
22:15then the father of the girl and her mother shall take and bring out the girl’s evidence of virginity to the elders of the city at the gate.
22:16And the father of the girl shall say to the elders, I gave my daughter to this man as a wife, and he hates her.
22:17And behold, he has brought charges of misconduct, saying, I did not find evidence of virginity in your daughter; but this is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.
22:18And the elders of that city shall take the man and discipline him.
22:19And they shall fine him one hundred pieces of silver and give them to the father of the girl, because he has brought a bad name upon a virgin of Israel; and she shall remain his wife. He may not send her away all his days.
22:20But if this charge is true, and no evidence of virginity has been found for the girl,
22:21then they shall bring the girl out to the doorway of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones, and she shall die; for she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by acting as a prostitute in her father’s house. So you shall put away the evil from your midst.
22:22When a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die: the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So you shall put away the evil from Israel.
22:23When there is a girl, a virgin, betrothed to a man, and another man finds her in a city and lies with her,
22:24then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and stone them with stones, and they shall die: the girl, because she did not cry out in the city, and the man, because he violated his neighbor’s wife. So you shall put away the evil from your midst.
22:25But if the man finds the betrothed girl in a field, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die.
22:26And you shall do nothing to the girl; the girl has committed no sin worthy of death. For as when a man rises against his neighbor and murders him, so is this matter.
22:27For he found her in the field; the betrothed girl cried out, but there was no one to save her.
22:28When a man finds a girl, a virgin who is not betrothed, and takes hold of her and lies with her, and they are found,
22:29then the man who lay with her shall give fifty pieces of silver to the father of the girl, and she shall become his wife. Because he has violated her, he may not send her away all his days.

Chapter 23

23:1A man shall not take his father’s wife, nor uncover the corner of his father’s garment.
23:2No one whose testicles are crushed or whose male organ is cut off shall enter the assembly of the LORD.
23:3No one born of an unlawful union shall enter the assembly of the LORD; even to the tenth generation, none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the LORD.
23:4No Ammonite or Moabite shall enter the assembly of the LORD; even to the tenth generation, none of their descendants shall enter the assembly of the LORD forever,
23:5because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt, and because Moab hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram-naharaim to curse you.
23:6But the LORD your God was not willing to listen to Balaam, and the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loved you.
23:7You shall not seek their peace or their welfare all your days, forever.
23:8You shall not detest an Edomite, because he is your brother. You shall not detest an Egyptian, because you were a sojourner in his land.
23:9Children born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD in the third generation.
23:10When you go out to camp against your enemies, you shall keep yourself from every evil thing.
23:11When there is among you a man who is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he shall go outside the camp; he shall not come within the camp.
23:12Toward evening he shall bathe himself with water, and when the sun has set he may come within the camp.
23:13You shall have a place outside the camp, and you shall go out there.
23:14And you shall have a spade among your tools; when you relieve yourself outside, you shall dig with it, then turn back and cover your excrement.
23:15For the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and to give your enemies into your hand; therefore your camp shall be holy, so that He sees nothing indecent among you and turns away from you.
23:16You shall not hand over to his master a slave who has escaped from his master to you.
23:17He shall dwell with you, among you, in the place he chooses within one of your gates, wherever it pleases him; you shall not oppress him.
23:18There shall not be a female cult prostitute among the daughters of Israel, nor a male cult prostitute among the sons of Israel.
23:19You shall not bring the wages of a prostitute or the price of a dog into the house of the LORD your God for any vow, for both are an abomination to the LORD your God.
23:20You shall not charge interest to your brother—interest on money, interest on food, or interest on anything lent at interest.
23:21You may charge interest to a foreigner, but you shall not charge interest to your brother, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land to which you are going in to possess it.
23:22When you vow a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it; for the LORD your God will surely require it of you, and it would be sin in you.
23:23But when you refrain from vowing, there is no sin in you.
23:24What has gone out of your lips you shall keep and do, according to what you have vowed to the LORD your God as a freewill offering, which you spoke with your mouth.
23:25When you come into the vineyard of your neighbor, then you may eat grapes to your fill, but you shall not put any into your vessel.
23:26When you come into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not put a sickle to your neighbor’s standing grain.

Chapter 24

24:1When a man takes a wife and marries her, and she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it into her hand, and sends her out of his house,
24:2and she goes out of his house, goes and becomes another man’s wife,
24:3and the latter husband hates her, writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it into her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband who took her as his wife dies,
24:4then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the LORD. And you shall not bring sin upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
24:5When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army, nor shall any duty be laid upon him; he shall be free at home for one year and shall bring joy to the wife whom he has taken.
24:6No one shall take a pair of millstones, or even the upper millstone, in pledge, for he would be taking a life in pledge.
24:7When a man is found kidnapping one of his brothers from among the sons of Israel, and he enslaves him or sells him, then that kidnapper shall die. So you shall put away the evil from your midst.
24:8Take heed in a case of skin disease, to observe carefully and do according to all that the Levitical priests teach you; as I commanded them, so you shall take care to do.
24:9Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam on the way, when you came out of Egypt.
24:10When you make any loan to your neighbor, you shall not go into his house to take his pledge.
24:11You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you made the loan shall bring the pledge out to you.
24:12And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep holding his pledge.
24:13You shall surely return the pledge to him when the sun goes down, so that he may sleep in his garment and bless you; and it shall be righteousness for you before the LORD your God.
24:14You shall not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who is in your land within your gates.
24:15You shall give him his wages on the same day, before the sun goes down, for he is poor and sets his heart upon them, lest he cry against you to the LORD and you incur sin.
24:16Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; each shall be put to death for his own sin.
24:17You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or the orphan, nor take a widow’s garment in pledge.
24:18And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this.
24:19When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not return to take it; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
24:20When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the branches again; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow.
24:21When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it afterward; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow.
24:22And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this.

Chapter 25

25:1When there is a dispute between men, and they come before the court, the judges shall judge them, declaring the righteous righteous and the wicked wicked.
25:2And it shall be, if the wicked man deserves to be beaten, that the judge shall make him lie down and have him beaten before him with the number of blows his wrongdoing deserves.
25:3He may beat him forty times, but no more, lest he go beyond these and beat him with many more blows, and your brother be degraded in your eyes.
25:4You shall not muzzle an ox in its threshing.
25:5When brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her, take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother toward her.
25:6And the firstborn whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, so that his name is not blotted out from Israel.
25:7But if the man does not wish to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate, to the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuses to raise up a name for his brother in Israel; he is unwilling to perform the duty of a husband’s brother toward me.
25:8Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him; and if he stands and says, I do not wish to take her,
25:9then his brother’s wife shall draw near to him in the sight of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, spit in his face, and answer and say, Thus shall it be done to the man who will not build up his brother’s house.
25:10And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him whose sandal was removed.
25:11When men fight with one another, and the wife of one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of the one striking him, and she reaches out her hand and seizes his genitals,
25:12then you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall show no pity.
25:13You shall not have in your bag a weight and a weight, a large and a small.
25:14You shall not have in your house an ephah and an ephah, a large and a small.
25:15You shall have a full and just weight; you shall have a full and just ephah, so that your days may be prolonged on the ground which the LORD your God is giving you.
25:16For anyone who does these things, anyone who acts unjustly, is an abomination to the LORD your God.
25:17Remember what Amalek did to you on the way, when you were coming out of Egypt,
25:18how he met you on the way and struck down all who lagged behind you, when you were weary and faint; and he did not fear God.
25:19And it shall be, when the LORD your God gives you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. You shall not forget.

Chapter 26

26:1And it shall be, when you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it,
26:2that you shall take some of the firstfruits of all the fruit of the ground which you bring in from your land which the LORD your God is giving you, put them in a basket, and go to the place which the LORD your God chooses to cause His Name to dwell there.
26:3And you shall come to the priest who is in office in those days, and say to him, I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come into the land which the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.
26:4And the priest shall take the basket out of your hand and place it before the altar of the LORD your God.
26:5And you shall answer and say before the LORD your God, A wandering Aramean was my father. He went down to Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; and there he became a great, mighty, and populous nation.
26:6And the Egyptians treated us harshly, afflicted us, and laid hard labor upon us.
26:7Then we cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression.
26:8And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, and with signs and wonders.
26:9And He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
26:10And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the ground which You have given me, O LORD. And you shall set them before the LORD your God and bow yourself before the LORD your God.
26:11And you shall rejoice in all the good things which the LORD your God has given to you and to your house—you, the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you.
26:12When you have finished tithing all the tithe of your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, then you shall give it to the Levite, the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow, and they shall eat within your gates and be satisfied.
26:13And you shall say before the LORD your God, I have removed the holy portion from my house, and have also given it to the Levite, the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow, according to all Your commandment which You commanded me. I have not transgressed any of Your commandments, nor have I forgotten them.
26:14I have not eaten any of it while mourning, nor removed any of it while unclean, nor given any of it for the dead. I have listened to the voice of the LORD my God; I have done according to all that You commanded me.
26:15Look down from Your holy habitation, from the heavens, and bless Your people Israel and the ground which You have given us, as You swore to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.
26:16This day the LORD your God commands you to do these statutes and judgments; therefore you shall observe and do them with all your heart and with all your soul.
26:17You have declared today that the LORD is your God, and that you will walk in His ways, keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments, and listen to His voice.
26:18And the LORD has declared today that you are His people, His treasured possession, as He spoke to you, and that you are to keep all His commandments,
26:19and that He will set you high above all the nations which He has made, for praise, for fame, and for honor, and that you may be a holy people to the LORD your God, as He spoke.

Chapter 27

27:1Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep all the commandment which I am commanding you today.
27:2And it shall be, on the day you cross over the Jordan into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, that you shall set up large stones for yourself and coat them with plaster.
27:3And you shall write upon them all the words of this law when you cross over, so that you may enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, spoke to you.
27:4And it shall be, when you cross over the Jordan, that you shall set up these stones which I am commanding you today on Mount Ebal, and coat them with plaster.
27:5And you shall build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones; you shall not wield an iron tool upon them.
27:6With uncut stones you shall build the altar of the LORD your God, and you shall offer burnt offerings upon it to the LORD your God.
27:7You shall sacrifice peace offerings, eat there, and rejoice before the LORD your God.
27:8And you shall write upon the stones all the words of this law very clearly.”
27:9And Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying, “Be silent and listen, O Israel: This day you have become the people of the LORD your God.
27:10You shall listen to the voice of the LORD your God and do His commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today.”
27:11And Moses commanded the people on that day, saying,
27:12“These shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people when you cross over the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
27:13And these shall stand for the curse on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.”
27:14And the Levites shall proclaim to every man of Israel with a loud voice:
27:15“Cursed is the man who makes a carved image or a cast-metal image, an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of a craftsman, and puts it in a secret place.” And all the people shall answer and say, “So be it.”
27:16“Cursed is he who dishonors his father or his mother.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:17“Cursed is he who moves his neighbor’s boundary marker.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:18“Cursed is he who misleads the blind on the way.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:19“Cursed is he who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:20“Cursed is he who lies with his father’s wife, for he has uncovered the corner of his father’s garment.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:21“Cursed is he who lies with any beast.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:22“Cursed is he who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:23“Cursed is he who lies with his wife’s mother.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:24“Cursed is he who strikes down his neighbor in secret.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:25“Cursed is he who takes a bribe to strike down an innocent life.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”
27:26“Cursed is he who does not uphold the words of this law by doing them.” And all the people shall say, “So be it.”

Chapter 28

28:1And it shall be, if you diligently listen to the voice of the LORD your God, observing to do all His commandments which I am commanding you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
28:2And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you listen to the voice of the LORD your God:
28:3Blessed are you in the city, and blessed are you in the field.
28:4Blessed is the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your livestock—the offspring of your cattle and the young of your flock.
28:5Blessed is your basket and your kneading-trough.
28:6Blessed are you when you come in, and blessed are you when you go out.
28:7The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be struck before you; they shall come out against you in one way and flee before you in seven ways.
28:8The LORD will command the blessing upon you in your storehouses and in all that you undertake, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
28:9The LORD will establish you as His holy people, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways.
28:10And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the Name of the LORD is called upon you, and they shall be afraid of you.
28:11And the LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your livestock, and the fruit of your ground, on the ground which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.
28:12The LORD will open for you His good treasury, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.
28:13And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only be above and not beneath, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am commanding you today, to keep and to do,
28:14and if you do not turn aside from any of the words which I am commanding you today, to the right or to the left, to go after other gods and serve them.
28:15But it shall be, if you do not listen to the voice of the LORD your God, observing to do all His commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today, that all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you:
28:16Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field.
28:17Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading-trough.
28:18Cursed is the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the offspring of your cattle and the young of your flock.
28:19Cursed are you when you come in, and cursed are you when you go out.
28:20The LORD will send upon you the curse, confusion, and rebuke in all that you undertake, until you are destroyed and perish quickly, because of the evil of your deeds by which you have forsaken Me.
28:21The LORD will cause pestilence to cling to you until He has consumed you from the ground to which you are going in to possess it.
28:22The LORD will strike you with consumption, fever, inflammation, fiery heat, sword, blight, and mildew; and they shall pursue you until you perish.
28:23And the heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth beneath you iron.
28:24The LORD will make the rain of your land dust and ashes; from the heavens it shall come down upon you until you are destroyed.
28:25The LORD will cause you to be struck before your enemies; you shall go out against them in one way and flee before them in seven ways, and you shall become an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
28:26And your carcasses shall become food for every bird of the heavens and beast of the earth, and there shall be no one to frighten them away.
28:27The LORD will strike you with the boils of Egypt, with tumors, scurvy, and itch, from which you cannot be healed.
28:28The LORD will strike you with madness, blindness, and bewilderment of heart.
28:29And you shall grope at noon as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways. You shall be only oppressed and plundered all your days, and there shall be no one to save you.
28:30You shall betroth a woman, but another man shall lie with her; you shall build a house, but not dwell in it; you shall plant a vineyard, but not enjoy its fruit.
28:31Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you shall not eat of it; your donkey shall be taken violently from before you and not restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and there shall be no one to save you.
28:32Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, and your eyes shall look for them and fail all the day, but your hand shall be powerless.
28:33A people whom you have not known shall eat the fruit of your ground and all your labor, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed all your days.
28:34And you shall be driven mad by the sight which your eyes see.
28:35The LORD will strike you with severe boils on the knees and legs, from which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.
28:36The LORD will bring you and the king whom you set over you to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone.
28:37And you shall become a horror, a proverb, and a byword among all the peoples to whom the LORD leads you.
28:38You shall carry much seed out into the field but gather little in, for the locust shall consume it.
28:39You shall plant and tend vineyards, but you shall not drink the wine or gather the grapes, for the worm shall consume them.
28:40You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with oil, for your olives shall drop off.
28:41You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not remain with you, for they shall go into captivity.
28:42The swarming locust shall possess all your trees and the fruit of your ground.
28:43The sojourner who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall sink lower and lower.
28:44He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.
28:45And all these curses shall come upon you, pursue you, and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not listen to the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you.
28:46And they shall be upon you and your descendants as a sign and a wonder forever.
28:47Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart in the abundance of all things,
28:48you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD sends against you, in hunger, thirst, nakedness, and lack of all things; and He shall put an iron yoke upon your neck until He has destroyed you.
28:49The LORD will raise up against you a nation from afar, from the end of the earth, as swiftly as the eagle flies—a nation whose language you do not understand,
28:50a nation of fierce countenance, which shows no regard for the old and no favor to the young.
28:51And it shall eat the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground until you are destroyed; it shall leave you no grain, new wine, or oil, no offspring of your cattle or young of your flock, until it has destroyed you.
28:52And it shall besiege you within all your gates, until your high and fortified walls in which you trust come down throughout all your land. It shall besiege you within all your gates throughout all your land which the LORD your God has given you.
28:53And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and daughters whom the LORD your God has given you, in the siege and distress with which your enemies hem you in.
28:54The most tender and delicate man among you shall look with hostility upon his brother, the wife of his bosom, and the remnant of his sons whom he leaves,
28:55refusing to give any of them some of the flesh of his sons which he eats, because nothing is left to him in the siege and distress with which your enemy hems you in within all your gates.
28:56The most tender and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot upon the ground because of her delicacy and tenderness, shall look with hostility upon the husband of her bosom, her son, and her daughter,
28:57and upon the afterbirth which comes out from between her feet, and upon the sons whom she bears; for she shall eat them secretly for lack of everything, in the siege and distress with which your enemy hems you in within your gates.
28:58If you do not observe to do all the words of this law which are written in this book, to fear this glorious and awesome Name—the LORD your God—
28:59then the LORD will make your plagues extraordinary, and the plagues of your descendants: great and lasting plagues, and severe and lasting sicknesses.
28:60And He will bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you.
28:61Also every sickness and every plague which is not written in the Book of this Law, the LORD will bring upon you until you are destroyed.
28:62And you shall be left few in number, though you were as numerous as the stars of the heavens, because you did not listen to the voice of the LORD your God.
28:63And it shall be, as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you and lay you waste; and you shall be uprooted from the ground to which you are going in to possess it.
28:64And the LORD shall scatter you among all the peoples, from one end of the earth to the other; and there you shall serve other gods which neither you nor your fathers have known, gods of wood and stone.
28:65And among those nations you shall find no rest, nor shall there be a resting place for the sole of your foot. And the LORD shall give you there a trembling heart, failing eyes, and anguish of soul.
28:66And your life shall hang in suspense before you; you shall be afraid night and day, and shall have no assurance of your life.
28:67In the morning you shall say, O that it were evening! And in the evening you shall say, O that it were morning!—because of the dread in your heart and the sight which your eyes see.
28:68And the LORD shall bring you back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said to you, You shall never see it again; and there you shall offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there shall be no buyer.”
28:69These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, apart from the covenant which He made with them at Horeb.

Chapter 29

29:1Then Moses called to all Israel and said to them, “You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to all his land—
29:2the great trials which your eyes saw, those great signs and wonders.
29:3But the LORD has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, or ears to hear, to this day.
29:4And I led you forty years in the wilderness; your garments did not wear out upon you, nor did your sandal wear away from your foot.
29:5You ate no bread and drank no wine or strong drink, so that you might know that I am the LORD your God.
29:6Then you came to this place, and Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to meet us in battle, and we struck them.
29:7And we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
29:8Therefore you shall keep the words of this covenant and do them, so that you may prosper in all that you do.
29:9You are standing today, all of you, before the LORD your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, every man of Israel,
29:10your children, your wives, and the sojourner who is within your camps, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water,
29:11so that you may enter into the covenant of the LORD your God and into His oath, which the LORD your God is making with you today,
29:12in order to establish you today as His people, and that He may be your God, as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
29:13And I am not making this covenant and this oath with you alone,
29:14but with him who is standing here with us today before the LORD our God, and with him who is not here with us today.
29:15For you know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt and how we passed through the midst of the nations through which you passed.
29:16And you saw their abominations and their idols of wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them,
29:17lest there be among you a man or woman, family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those nations; lest there be among you a root bearing poison and wormwood.
29:18And it shall be, when he hears the words of this oath, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart, to sweep away the well-watered with the parched.
29:19The LORD will not be willing to forgive him; for then the anger of the LORD and His jealousy shall smoke against that man, and every curse written in this book shall rest upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under the heavens.
29:20And the LORD shall single him out for calamity from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant which are written in this Book of the Law.
29:21And the latter generation, your children who rise after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far-off land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses with which the LORD has afflicted it:
29:22The whole land is sulfur and salt, a burning waste; it is not sown, nor does it sprout, nor does any vegetation grow upon it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and wrath.
29:23Indeed, all the nations shall say, Why has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this burning of great anger?
29:24And they shall say, Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.
29:25Then they went and served other gods and bowed themselves to them—gods which they had not known and which He had not allotted to them.
29:26Then the anger of the LORD burned against that land, to bring upon it every curse written in this book.
29:27Then the LORD uprooted them from their ground in anger, wrath, and great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.
29:28The hidden things belong to the LORD our God, but the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Chapter 30

30:1And it shall be, when all these things come upon you—the blessing and the curse which I have set before you—and you take them to heart among all the nations where the LORD your God has driven you,
30:2and return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice, according to all that I am commanding you today, you and your sons, with all your heart and with all your soul,
30:3then the LORD your God shall restore your fortunes and have compassion on you; He shall gather you again from all the peoples among whom the LORD your God has scattered you.
30:4Though your outcasts are at the end of the heavens, from there the LORD your God shall gather you, and from there He shall take you.
30:5And the LORD your God shall bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He shall do you good and multiply you beyond your fathers.
30:6And the LORD your God shall circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you may love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.
30:7And the LORD your God shall put all these curses upon your enemies and upon those who hate you, who pursued you.
30:8And you shall return and listen to the voice of the LORD, and do all His commandments which I am commanding you today.
30:9And the LORD your God shall make you abound in every work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your ground, for good; for the LORD shall again rejoice over you for good, as He rejoiced over your fathers,
30:10when you listen to the voice of the LORD your God, keeping His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and when you return to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
30:11For this commandment which I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it far off.
30:12It is not in the heavens, that you should say, Who will ascend into the heavens for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?
30:13Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who will cross beyond the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?
30:14For the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.
30:15See, today I have set before you life and good, and death and evil,
30:16for I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments; then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God shall bless you in the land which you are entering to possess.
30:17But if your heart turns away and you do not listen, and you are drawn away and bow down to other gods and serve them,
30:18I declare to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days on the ground which you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.
30:19I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you today: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore choose life, so that you and your offspring may live,
30:20loving the LORD your God, listening to His voice, and clinging to Him—for He is your life and the length of your days—that you may dwell on the ground which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Chapter 31

31:1Then Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel.
31:2And he said to them, “I am one hundred and twenty years old today; I am no longer able to go out and come in, and the LORD has said to me, You shall not cross this Jordan.
31:3The LORD your God—He is crossing before you. He shall destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua—he is crossing before you, as the LORD has spoken.
31:4And the LORD shall do to them as He did to Sihon and Og, kings of the Amorites, and to their land, whom He destroyed.
31:5And the LORD shall deliver them over to you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandment which I have commanded you.
31:6Be strong and courageous; do not fear or be terrified because of them, for the LORD your God is He who goes with you. He shall not fail you or forsake you.”
31:7Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD swore to their fathers to give them, and you shall cause them to inherit it.
31:8And the LORD is He who goes before you; He Himself is with you. He shall not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
31:9Then Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel.
31:10And Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of release, at the Feast of Booths,
31:11when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses, you shall proclaim this law before all Israel in their hearing.
31:12Assemble the people—the men, the women, the children, and your sojourner who is within your gates—so that they may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law.
31:13And their sons, who have not known, shall hear and learn to fear the LORD your God all the days that you live on the ground which you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
31:14Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, your days draw near for you to die. Call Joshua, and present yourselves in the Tent of Meeting, that I may commission him.” And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the Tent of Meeting.
31:15And the LORD appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the doorway of the tent.
31:16Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers; and this people shall rise and go whoring after the foreign gods of the land into which it is entering. It shall forsake Me and break My covenant which I made with it.
31:17And My anger shall burn against them in that day, and I will forsake them and hide My face from them; and they shall become prey, and many evils and distresses shall find them. And they shall say in that day, Is it not because our God is not in our midst that these evils have found us?
31:18And I will surely hide My face in that day because of all the evil which they have done, for they have turned to other gods.
31:19And now, write down this song for yourselves, and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it in their mouths, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel.
31:20For when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they eat and are satisfied and grow fat, then they shall turn to other gods and serve them, and despise Me and break My covenant.
31:21And it shall be, when many evils and distresses find them, that this song shall testify before them as a witness, for it shall not be forgotten from the mouth of their offspring. For I know the inclination which they are forming today, before I bring them into the land which I swore to give them.”
31:22Then Moses wrote this song on that day and taught it to the sons of Israel.
31:23Then the LORD commanded Joshua son of Nun and said, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore to them, and I will be with you.”
31:24And it came to pass, when Moses had finished writing the words of this law on a scroll until they were complete,
31:25that Moses commanded the Levites who carried the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD, saying,
31:26“Take this Book of the Law and set it beside the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD your God, and it shall remain there as a witness against you.
31:27For I know your rebellion and your stiff neck. Behold, while I am still alive with you today, you have been rebelling against the LORD; how much more after my death!
31:28Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, and I will speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against them.
31:29For I know that after my death you will act corruptly and turn aside from the way which I commanded you; and evil shall befall you in the latter days, because you do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him with the work of your hands.”
31:30And Moses spoke the words of this song in full in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel:

Chapter 32

32:1“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
32:2My teaching shall drop as rain; my words shall distill as dew, as gentle rain upon tender grass and as showers upon the plants.
32:3For I proclaim the Name of the LORD; ascribe greatness to our God.
32:4The Rock—His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.
32:5They have dealt corruptly with Him; they are not His children—this is their blemish—a crooked and twisted generation.
32:6Do you deal thus with the LORD, O foolish and unwise people? Is He not your Father who bought you? He made you and established you.
32:7Remember the days of old; consider the years of generation after generation. Ask your father, and he will tell you; your elders, and they will say to you:
32:8When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of Adam, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.
32:9For the LORD’s portion is His people; Jacob is His allotted inheritance.
32:10He found him in a desert land, in the waste of a howling wilderness. He encircled him; He cared for him; He guarded him as the pupil of His eye.
32:11As an eagle stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, it spreads its wings, catches them, and carries them on its pinions,
32:12the LORD alone led him, and there was no foreign god with him.
32:13He made him ride upon the high places of the earth, and he ate the produce of the fields; and He made him suck honey from a rock, and oil from flint rock;
32:14curds from the herd and milk from the flock, with fat of lambs, rams of Bashan, and male goats, with the finest wheat; and from the blood of the grape you drank wine.
32:15Then Jeshurun grew fat and kicked. You grew fat, you grew thick, you grew sleek; then he forsook God who made him and dishonored the Rock of his salvation.
32:16They made Him jealous with foreign gods; with abominations they provoked Him.
32:17They sacrificed to demons, not God; to gods they had not known, new gods that had recently come, whom your fathers had not feared.
32:18You neglected the Rock who fathered you and forgot God who gave you birth.
32:19And the LORD saw and spurned them, because of the provocation of His sons and His daughters.
32:20And He said, I will hide My face from them; I will see what their end shall be. For they are a perverse generation, children in whom there is no faithfulness.
32:21They have made Me jealous with what is not God; they have provoked Me with their vanities. And I will make them jealous with those who are not a people; I will provoke them with a foolish nation.
32:22For a fire has been kindled in My anger, and it burns to the lowest realm of the dead; it consumes the earth and its produce, and sets the foundations of the mountains on fire.
32:23I will heap calamities upon them; I will spend My arrows on them.
32:24They shall be wasted by famine, consumed by burning heat and bitter destruction. I will also send the teeth of beasts against them, with the venom of creatures crawling in the dust.
32:25Outside, the sword shall bereave, and inside, terror; both young man and virgin, nursing child and gray-haired man.
32:26I said, I will scatter them; I will cause their memory to cease among men,
32:27had I not feared the provocation of the enemy, lest their adversaries misunderstand, lest they say, Our hand is triumphant, and the LORD has not done all this.
32:28For they are a nation devoid of counsel, and there is no understanding in them.
32:29If only they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern their latter end.
32:30How could one pursue a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them and the LORD had delivered them up?
32:31For their rock is not as our Rock; even our enemies are judges.
32:32For their vine is from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison; their clusters are bitter.
32:33Their wine is the venom of serpents and the cruel poison of cobras.
32:34Is this not laid up with Me, sealed among My treasures?
32:35Vengeance is Mine, and recompense; in due time their foot shall slip, for the day of their calamity is near, and what is prepared for them hastens.
32:36For the LORD shall judge His people and have compassion on His servants, when He sees that their strength is gone and none remains, slave or free.
32:37And He shall say, Where are their gods, the rock in which they sought refuge,
32:38who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise and help you; let them be your shelter.
32:39See now that I, I am He, and there is no god besides Me. I put to death, and I make alive; I have wounded, and I heal; and there is no deliverer from My hand.
32:40For I lift up My hand to the heavens and say, As I live forever,
32:41if I sharpen My flashing sword and My hand takes hold of judgment, I will return vengeance upon My adversaries and repay those who hate Me.
32:42I will make My arrows drunk with blood, and My sword shall devour flesh—with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired heads of the enemy.
32:43Rejoice, O nations, with His people; for He avenges the blood of His servants, returns vengeance upon His adversaries, and makes atonement for His land and His people.”
32:44Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and Hoshea son of Nun.
32:45And Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel.
32:46Then he said to them, “Set your heart upon all the words which I am testifying against you today, so that you may command your sons to be careful to do all the words of this law.
32:47For it is not an empty word for you, but it is your life; and by this word you shall prolong your days on the ground which you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
32:48And the LORD spoke to Moses on that very day, saying,
32:49“Ascend this mountain of Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab opposite Jericho, and see the land of Canaan which I am giving to the sons of Israel as a possession.
32:50And die on the mountain which you are ascending, and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people,
32:51because you acted unfaithfully against Me among the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribath-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, because you did not sanctify Me among the sons of Israel.
32:52For you shall see the land from a distance, but you shall not enter the land which I am giving to the sons of Israel.”

Chapter 33

33:1And this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death.
33:2And he said: “The LORD came from Sinai and dawned upon them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran and came from the myriads of holy ones; from His right hand came fire for them.
33:3Indeed, He loves the peoples; all His holy ones are in Your hand. They gather at Your feet; each receives Your words.
33:4Moses commanded us a law, an inheritance for the assembly of Jacob.
33:5And He was King in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people gathered together, the tribes of Israel.
33:6Let Reuben live and not die, and let his men be few.
33:7And this he said of Judah: Hear, O LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people. With his own hands he contends for it; be a help against his adversaries.
33:8And of Levi he said: Your sacred decision lots belong to Your faithful one, whom You tested at Massah, with whom You contended at the waters of Meribah;
33:9who said of his father and his mother, I have not regarded them; he did not acknowledge his brothers or know his own sons. For they kept Your word and guarded Your covenant.
33:10They teach Your judgments to Jacob and Your law to Israel; they place incense before You and whole burnt offerings upon Your altar.
33:11Bless, O LORD, his strength, and accept the work of his hands. Shatter the loins of those who rise against him, and of those who hate him, so that they rise no more.
33:12Of Benjamin he said: The beloved of the LORD shall dwell securely beside Him; He shelters him all the day, and he dwells between His shoulders.
33:13And of Joseph he said: Blessed by the LORD is his land, with the choicest gifts of the heavens, with dew, and with the deep lying beneath,
33:14with the choicest produce of the sun and the choicest yield of the months,
33:15with the finest produce of the ancient mountains and the abundance of the everlasting hills,
33:16with the choicest things of the earth and its fullness, and the favor of Him who dwelt in the bush. Let these come upon the head of Joseph and upon the crown of him who was set apart from his brothers.
33:17His firstborn bull has majesty, and his horns are the horns of a wild ox; with them he shall gore the peoples, all of them, to the ends of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.
33:18And of Zebulun he said: Rejoice, O Zebulun, in your going out, and, O Issachar, in your tents.
33:19They shall call peoples to the mountain; there they shall offer righteous sacrifices. For they shall draw out the abundance of the seas and the treasures hidden in the sand.
33:20And of Gad he said: Blessed is He who enlarges Gad. He crouches as a lion and tears the arm, even the crown of the head.
33:21And he chose the first part for himself, for there a ruler’s portion was reserved; and he came with the heads of the people. He executed the righteousness of the LORD and His judgments with Israel.
33:22And of Dan he said: Dan is a lion’s cub; he leaps from Bashan.
33:23And of Naphtali he said: O Naphtali, satisfied with favor and full of the blessing of the LORD, possess the west and the south.
33:24And of Asher he said: Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be favored by his brothers, and let him dip his foot in oil.
33:25Your bolts shall be iron and bronze, and as your days, so shall your strength be.
33:26There is none like the God of Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, and through the skies in His majesty.
33:27The eternal God is your dwelling place, and beneath are the everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy from before you and says, Destroy.
33:28So Israel dwells securely, the fountain of Jacob alone, in a land of grain and new wine; even his heavens drop dew.
33:29Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD, the shield of your help and the sword of your majesty? Your enemies shall submit to you, and you shall tread upon their high places.”

Chapter 34

34:1Then Moses ascended from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, opposite Jericho; and the LORD showed him all the land: Gilead as far as Dan,
34:2all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea,
34:3the Negev, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palms, as far as Zoar.
34:4Then the LORD said to him, “This is the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, I will give it to your seed. I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.”
34:5Then Moses, servant of the LORD, died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.
34:6And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor; and no man knows his burial place to this day.
34:7And Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died; his eye had not grown dim, nor had his vigor abated.
34:8Then the sons of Israel mourned for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; and the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were completed.
34:9And Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands upon him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
34:10And since then no prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,
34:11in all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land,
34:12and in all the mighty hand and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.
