Chapter 1

1:1Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative of the matters fulfilled among us,
1:2just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us,
1:3it seemed good to me also, having followed all things carefully from the beginning, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
1:4that you may know the certainty of the things in which you were instructed.
1:5In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
1:6And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
1:7But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.
1:8Now it came to pass, while he served as priest before God in the order of his division,
1:9according to the custom of the priesthood, that his lot fell to burn incense when he entered the temple of the Lord.
1:10And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.
1:11Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
1:12And when Zechariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
1:13But the angel said to him, “Do not fear, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John.
1:14And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.
1:15For he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
1:16And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.
1:17And he will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare a people made ready for the Lord.”
1:18And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am old, and my wife is advanced in years.”
1:19And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands before God; and I was sent to speak to you and to proclaim this good news to you.
1:20And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
1:21And the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering at his delay in the temple.
1:22And when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute.
1:23And it came to pass, when the days of his service were completed, that he went away to his house.
1:24And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she kept herself secluded five months, saying,
1:25“Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when He looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.”
1:26And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
1:27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
1:28And the angel came in to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.”
1:29But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at his word, and pondered what kind of greeting this might be.
1:30And the angel said to her, “Do not fear, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
1:31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son, and you will call His Name Jesus.
1:32He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
1:33And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
1:34Then Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I do not know a man?”
1:35And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore also the Holy One to be born will be called Son of God.
1:36And behold, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren.
1:37For nothing will be impossible with God.”
1:38And Mary said, “Behold, the maidservant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel went away from her.
1:39And Mary arose in those days and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah,
1:40and entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
1:41And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, that the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
1:42And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the Fruit of your womb!
1:43And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
1:44For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
1:45And blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things spoken to her from the Lord.”
1:46And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
1:47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
1:48for He has looked upon the lowliness of His maidservant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed,
1:49for the Mighty One has done great things for me; and holy is His Name.
1:50And His mercy is from generation to generation upon those who fear Him.
1:51He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the thought of their heart.
1:52He has brought down the mighty from thrones and exalted the lowly.
1:53He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty.
1:54He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of mercy,
1:55as He spoke to our fathers—to Abraham and to his seed forever.”
1:56And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.
1:57Now the time was fulfilled for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son.
1:58And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified His mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.
1:59And it came to pass, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zechariah, after the name of his father.
1:60But his mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.”
1:61And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”
1:62And they made signs to his father, asking what he wished him to be called.
1:63And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” And they all marveled.
1:64And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was freed, and he spoke, blessing God.
1:65And fear came upon all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were spoken of throughout the hill country of Judea.
1:66And all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.
1:67And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,
1:68“Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, for He has visited and worked redemption for His people,
1:69and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David,
1:70as He spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets, who have been from ancient times:
1:71salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,
1:72to show mercy to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant,
1:73the oath that He swore to Abraham our father,
1:74to grant us, having been delivered from the hand of our enemies, to serve Him without fear,
1:75in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
1:76And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,
1:77to give knowledge of salvation to His people in the forgiveness of their sins,
1:78through the tender mercy of our God, by which the Dawn from on high will visit us,
1:79to shine upon those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
1:80And the child grew and was strengthened in spirit; and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

Chapter 2

2:1And it came to pass in those days that a decree went forth from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
2:2This first registration took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.
2:3And all went to be registered, each to his own city.
2:4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
2:5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.
2:6And it came to pass, while they were there, that the days were fulfilled for her to give birth.
2:7And she gave birth to her firstborn Son, wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the guest room.
2:8And there were shepherds in the same region, staying in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.
2:9And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were greatly afraid.
2:10And the angel said to them, “Do not fear, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
2:11For today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you, who is the Anointed One, the Lord.
2:12And this will be the sign to you: you will find an Infant wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
2:13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,
2:14“Glory to God in the highest, and upon earth peace, goodwill among men!”
2:15And it came to pass, when the angels had gone away from them into Heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”
2:16And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Infant lying in the manger.
2:17And when they had seen Him, they made known the saying that had been spoken to them concerning this Child.
2:18And all who heard marveled at the things spoken to them by the shepherds.
2:19But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.
2:20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, just as it had been spoken to them.
2:21And when eight days were completed for circumcising the Child, His Name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
2:22And when the days of their purification were fulfilled, according to the Law of Moses, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord,
2:23as it is written in the Law of the Lord: “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,”
2:24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord: “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
2:25And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
2:26And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Anointed One.
2:27And he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the Law,
2:28he took Him in his arms, blessed God, and said,
2:29“Now, O Master, You dismiss Your slave in peace, according to Your word,
2:30for my eyes have seen Your salvation,
2:31which You have prepared before the face of all the peoples:
2:32a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of Your people Israel.”
2:33And Joseph and His mother marveled at the things spoken concerning Him.
2:34And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this One is appointed for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign spoken against—
2:35and a sword will pierce through your own soul also—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
2:36And there was Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,
2:37and she was a widow of about eighty-four years. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fastings and prayers night and day.
2:38And coming in at that same hour, she likewise gave thanks to the Lord and spoke concerning Him to all who were waiting for redemption in Jerusalem.
2:39And when they had completed all things according to the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city of Nazareth.
2:40And the Child grew and was strengthened in spirit, being filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.
2:41And His parents went yearly to Jerusalem at the Feast of the Passover.
2:42And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.
2:43And when they had completed the days and were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and His mother did not know it.
2:44But supposing Him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances.
2:45And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him.
2:46And it came to pass, after three days, that they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and questioning them.
2:47And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and His answers.
2:48And when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Child, why have You done this to us? Behold, Your father and I have sought You in anguish.”
2:49And He said to them, “Why were you seeking Me? Did you not know that I must be in what belongs to My Father?”
2:50And they did not understand the saying that He spoke to them.
2:51And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He was subject to them. And His mother treasured all these sayings in her heart.
2:52And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Chapter 3

3:1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
3:2during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas—the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
3:3And he came into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming an immersion of repentance for forgiveness of sins,
3:4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.
3:5Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill made low; and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough ways smooth;
3:6and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
3:7Then he said to the crowds coming forth to be immersed by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
3:8Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.
3:9Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree not bearing good fruit is cut down and cast into fire.”
3:10And the crowds questioned him, saying, “What then shall we do?”
3:11And he answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”
3:12And tax collectors also came to be immersed, and they said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”
3:13And he said to them, “Collect no more than what is appointed you.”
3:14And soldiers also questioned him, saying, “And what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Extort no one, nor accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages.”
3:15And as the people waited expectantly, all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Anointed One.
3:16John answered and said to them all, “I indeed immerse you in water, but One mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loose. He will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
3:17His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly cleanse His threshing floor and gather the wheat into His storehouse; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”
3:18And with many other exhortations he proclaimed good news to the people.
3:19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, and concerning all the evils that Herod had done,
3:20added this also to them all: he shut John in prison.
3:21And it came to pass, when all the people were immersed, that Jesus also was immersed; and while He was praying, Heaven was opened,
3:22and the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came out of Heaven, saying, “You are My Son, the Beloved; in You I delight.”
3:23Now Jesus Himself, when He began, was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, son of Joseph, son of Eli,
3:24son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Jannai, son of Joseph,
3:25son of Mattathias, son of Amos, son of Nahum, son of Esli, son of Naggai,
3:26son of Maath, son of Mattathias, son of Semein, son of Joseph, son of Judah,
3:27son of Joanan, son of Rhesa, son of Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel,
3:28son of Neri, son of Melchi, son of Addi, son of Cosam, son of Elmadam, son of Er,
3:29son of Jose, son of Eliezer, son of Jorim, son of Matthat,

Chapter 4

4:1And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
4:2being tempted by the Devil forty days. And He ate nothing in those days; and when they had ended, He was hungry.
4:3And the Devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
4:4And Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”
4:5And the Devil, having led Him up to a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
4:6And the Devil said to Him, “I will give You all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I will.
4:7Therefore, if You worship before me, all will be Yours.”
4:8And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.”
4:9And he led Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, cast Yourself down from here,
4:10for it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, to guard You,’
4:11and, ‘On their hands they will bear You up, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”
4:12And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said: You shall not test the Lord your God.”
4:13And when the Devil had completed every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.
4:14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report concerning Him went forth through all the surrounding region.
4:15And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
4:16And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and according to His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.
4:17And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And when He had unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written:
4:18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed at liberty,
4:19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
4:20And He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon Him.
4:21And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
4:22And all bore witness to Him and marveled at the gracious words coming forth from His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
4:23And He said to them, “Surely you will say this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself. Whatever we have heard was done in Capernaum, do here in Your hometown also.’”
4:24And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
4:25But in truth I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut for three years and six months and a great famine came over all the land;
4:26yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
4:27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
4:28And all in the synagogue were filled with wrath when they heard these things.
4:29And they rose, drove Him out of the city, and brought Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, that they might throw Him down headlong.
4:30But He, passing through the midst of them, went away.
4:31And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbaths.
4:32And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
4:33And in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice,
4:34saying, “Ah! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
4:35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, the demon came out of him without harming him.
4:36And amazement came upon all, and they spoke with one another, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”
4:37And a report concerning Him went forth into every place of the surrounding region.
4:38And He rose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was gripped by a high fever, and they appealed to Him concerning her.
4:39And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and immediately she rose and served them.
4:40And when the sun was setting, all who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on each one of them and healed them.
4:41And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Anointed One, the Son of God!” But He rebuked them and did not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Anointed One.
4:42And when day came, He departed and went into a desolate place. And the crowds sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from going away from them.
4:43But He said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”
4:44And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

Chapter 5

5:1And it came to pass, while the crowd pressed upon Him to hear the word of God, that He was standing beside the Lake of Gennesaret.
5:2And He saw two boats standing beside the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
5:3And He entered one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And sitting down, He taught the crowds from the boat.
5:4And when He had ceased speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch.”
5:5And Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we labored through the whole night and took nothing; but at Your word I will let down the net.”
5:6And when they had done this, they enclosed a great multitude of fish, and their net began to break.
5:7And they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.
5:8And when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
5:9For astonishment seized him, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish they had taken;
5:10and likewise also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear; from now on you will be catching men.”
5:11And when they had brought the boats to land, they left all and followed Him.
5:12And it came to pass, while He was in one of the cities, that behold, a man full of leprosy saw Jesus; and falling on his face, he implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You are able to cleanse me.”
5:13And He stretched forth His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
5:14And He charged him to tell no one: “But go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”
5:15But the report concerning Him spread all the more, and great crowds came together to hear and to be healed by Him of their sicknesses.
5:16But He withdrew into the desolate places and prayed.
5:17And it came to pass on one of those days, as He was teaching, that Pharisees and teachers of the Law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
5:18And behold, men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they sought to bring him in and set him before Him.
5:19And finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down through the tiles, with his bed, into the midst before Jesus.
5:20And seeing their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”
5:21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins but God alone?”
5:22But Jesus knew their thoughts and answered them, “Why do you reason in your hearts?
5:23Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?
5:24But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority upon the earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralyzed man—“I say to you, rise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”
5:25And immediately he rose before them, took up what he had been lying upon, and went away to his house, glorifying God.
5:26And astonishment seized them all; and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
5:27And after these things He went forth and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office; and He said to him, “Follow Me.”
5:28And leaving all, he arose and followed Him.
5:29And Levi made a great feast for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and others reclining with them.
5:30And their scribes and the Pharisees murmured against His disciples, saying, “Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
5:31And Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need of a physician, but those who are ill.
5:32I did not come to call righteous ones, but sinners to repentance.”
5:33And they said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”
5:34And He said to them, “Can you make the companions of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them?
5:35But days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”
5:36And He also spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a patch from a new garment upon an old garment; otherwise, the new garment is torn, and the patch from the new does not agree with the old.
5:37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins, and it will be poured out, and the wineskins will be destroyed.
5:38But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved together.
5:39And no one, after drinking old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’”

Chapter 6

6:1And it came to pass on a Sabbath, as He was going through the grainfields, that His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands.
6:2And certain of the Pharisees said to them, “Why do you do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbaths?”
6:3And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you not read even what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:
6:4how he entered the house of God, took the bread of the Presence, ate it, and gave some also to those with him, though it is not lawful for any but the priests alone to eat it?”
6:5And He said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord also of the Sabbath.”
6:6And it came to pass on another Sabbath that He entered the synagogue and taught; and a man was there whose right hand was withered.
6:7And the scribes and the Pharisees watched Him to see whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.
6:8But He knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Rise and stand in the midst.” And he rose and stood.
6:9Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you something: Is it lawful on the Sabbaths to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?”
6:10And looking around at them all, He said to the man, “Stretch forth your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored whole as the other.
6:11But they were filled with rage and spoke with one another about what they might do to Jesus.
6:12And it came to pass in those days that He went forth to the mountain to pray and continued all night in prayer to God.
6:13And when day came, He called His disciples near and chose twelve from them, whom He also named apostles:
6:14Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;
6:15Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus; and Simon called the Zealot;
6:16Judas the son of James; and Judas Iscariot, who also became a betrayer.
6:17And coming down with them, He stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon,
6:18who came to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those troubled by unclean spirits were also healed.
6:19And all the crowd sought to touch Him, because power went forth from Him and healed them all.
6:20And lifting up His eyes to His disciples, He said, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
6:21Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
6:22Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you, reproach you, and cast out your name as evil for the Son of Man’s sake.
6:23Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for their fathers did the same things to the prophets.
6:24But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort.
6:25Woe to you who are filled now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
6:26Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers did the same things to the false prophets.
6:27But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you;
6:28bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you.
6:29To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic also.
6:30Give to everyone who asks of you; and from him who takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.
6:31And as you wish men to do to you, do likewise to them.
6:32For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
6:33And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
6:34And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, that they may receive back as much.
6:35But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for He is kind to the ungrateful and evil.
6:36Therefore be merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
6:37And do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.
6:38Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, they will pour into your lap. For with the same measure you measure, it will be measured back to you.”
6:39And He spoke a parable to them: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
6:40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.
6:41And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the beam in your own eye?
6:42Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, permit me to take out the speck in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck in your brother’s eye.
6:43For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
6:44For each tree is known by its own fruit. Men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather a grape from a bramble bush.
6:45The good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, brings forth what is good; and the evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, brings forth what is evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
6:46And why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
6:47Everyone who comes to Me, hears My words, and does them—I will show you whom he is like:
6:48He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation upon the rock. And when a flood came, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, for it had been founded upon the rock.
6:49But he who hears and does not do is like a man who built a house upon the earth without a foundation. The stream broke against it, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.”

Chapter 7

7:1And when He had finished all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum.
7:2Now a certain captain of a hundred had a slave who was highly valued by him, and the slave was ill and about to die.
7:3And when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, imploring Him to come and heal his slave.
7:4And when they came to Jesus, they appealed to Him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy that You should do this for him,
7:5for he loves our nation, and he built our synagogue for us.”
7:6And Jesus went with them. But when He was already not far from the house, the captain of a hundred sent friends to Him, saying, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof.
7:7Therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You. But speak a word, and my servant will be healed.
7:8For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
7:9When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him; and turning to the crowd that followed Him, He said, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
7:10And those who had been sent returned to the house and found the sick slave in health.
7:11And it came to pass on the next day that He went to a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a great crowd.
7:12And as He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a great crowd from the city was with her.
7:13And when the Lord saw her, He was moved with compassion for her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
7:14And coming near, He touched the bier, and those who carried it stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
7:15And the dead man sat up and began to speak. And He gave him to his mother.
7:16And fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us,” and, “God has visited His people.”
7:17And this report concerning Him went forth throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.
7:18And the disciples of John told him about all these things.
7:19And John called two of his disciples near and sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You He who is coming, or should we look for another?”
7:20And when the men came to Him, they said, “John the Immerser sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You He who is coming, or should we look for another?’”
7:21And in that hour He cured many of diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many who were blind He granted sight.
7:22And Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight; the lame walk; lepers are cleansed; the deaf hear; the dead are raised; and the poor have good news proclaimed to them.
7:23And blessed is he who does not stumble because of Me.”
7:24And when the messengers of John had gone away, He began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go forth into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
7:25But what did you go forth to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those in splendid clothing and living in luxury are in kings’ houses.
7:26But what did you go forth to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet.
7:27This is he concerning whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’
7:28For I say to you, among those born of women there is no greater prophet than John the Immerser; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
7:29And all the people who heard, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God as righteous, having been immersed with the immersion of John.
7:30But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God for themselves, not having been immersed by him.
7:31And the Lord said, “To what, then, will I compare the men of this generation? And what are they like?
7:32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge for you, and you did not weep.’
7:33For John the Immerser came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
7:34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
7:35And wisdom was justified by all her children.”
7:36And one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And entering the Pharisee’s house, He reclined at table.
7:37And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, knowing that He reclined in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of perfume.
7:38And standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears; and she wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed His feet, and anointed them with the perfume.
7:39And when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke within himself, saying, “If this Man were a prophet, He would know who and what kind of woman this is who touches Him—that she is a sinner.”
7:40And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Teacher, say it.”
7:41“A certain creditor had two debtors: one owed five hundred days’ wages, and the other fifty.
7:42And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, then, which of them will love him more?”
7:43And Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one to whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
7:44And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.
7:45You gave Me no kiss, but from the time I entered, she has not ceased kissing My feet.
7:46You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.
7:47Therefore I say to you, her many sins have been forgiven, because she loved much; but he who is forgiven little loves little.”
7:48And He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
7:49And those reclining with Him began to say within themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
7:50And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Chapter 8

8:1And it came to pass afterward that He went through every city and village, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God; and the Twelve were with Him,
8:2and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out;
8:3Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward; Susanna; and many others, who ministered to Him from their possessions.
8:4And when a great crowd had gathered, and people from every city were coming to Him, He spoke by a parable:
8:5“The sower went forth to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell beside the way; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the sky devoured it.
8:6And some fell upon the rock; and when it sprang up, it withered because it had no moisture.
8:7And some fell among the thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.
8:8And some fell upon the good ground; and when it sprang up, it bore fruit a hundredfold.” As He said these things, He called out, “He who has ears to hear—let him hear.”
8:9And His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this parable mean?”
8:10And He said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to the rest it is given in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.
8:11Now this is the parable: The seed is the word of God.
8:12And those beside the way are those who hear; then the Devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, lest they believe and be saved.
8:13And those upon the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root. They believe for a time, and in a time of temptation fall away.
8:14And that which fell among the thorns are those who have heard, but as they go on, they are choked by the cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity.
8:15And that in the good ground are those who, having heard the word with an upright and good heart, hold it fast and bear fruit with perseverance.
8:16And no one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed; but he puts it upon a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light.
8:17For nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, nor concealed that will not be known and come to light.
8:18Therefore take heed how you hear; for whoever has, to him more will be given, and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”
8:19And His mother and brothers came to Him, but they could not reach Him because of the crowd.
8:20And it was told Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You.”
8:21But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
8:22And it came to pass on one of those days that He entered a boat with His disciples; and He said to them, “Let us pass over to the other side of the lake.” And they set out.
8:23But as they sailed, He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down upon the lake, and the boat was filling, and they were in peril.
8:24And they came near and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging water; and they ceased, and there was a calm.
8:25And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid and marveled, saying to one another, “Who, then, is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?”
8:26And they sailed down to the region of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.
8:27And when He had gone forth upon the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. He wore no garment and did not dwell in a house, but in the tombs.
8:28And when he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell before Him, and said with a loud voice, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of God Most High? I implore You, do not torment me!”
8:29For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It had seized him many times; and he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert places.
8:30And Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him.
8:31And they implored Him not to command them to go into the abyss.
8:32Now a herd of many pigs was feeding there upon the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the pigs. And He permitted them.
8:33And the demons went out of the man and entered the pigs; and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake and drowned.
8:34And when those who tended them saw what had happened, they fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside.
8:35And they went forth to see what had happened. And they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, clothed and in his right mind, sitting at Jesus’ feet; and they were afraid.
8:36And those who had seen it told them how the man possessed by demons had been saved.
8:37Then the whole multitude from the surrounding region of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. And He entered the boat and returned.
8:38Now the man from whom the demons had gone out implored Him that he might be with Him; but Jesus sent him away, saying,
8:39“Return to your house, and declare what great things God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.
8:40And it came to pass, when Jesus returned, that the crowd welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him.
8:41And behold, a man named Jairus came, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored Him to come to his house,
8:42for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds thronged Him.
8:43And a woman who had suffered a flow of blood for twelve years, and had spent all her livelihood on physicians, but could not be healed by anyone,
8:44came near behind Him and touched the fringe of His garment; and immediately the flow of her blood stopped.
8:45And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” And when all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes press and throng You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”
8:46But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me, for I perceived that power had gone forth from Me.”
8:47And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling before Him, she declared before all the people why she had touched Him and how she had been healed immediately.
8:48And He said to her, “Take courage, daughter; your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
8:49While He was still speaking, someone came from the house of the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher.”
8:50But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be saved.”
8:51And when He entered the house, He permitted no one to enter except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the child.
8:52And they were all weeping and lamenting for her; but He said, “Do not weep. She has not died, but sleeps.”
8:53And they laughed at Him, knowing that she had died.
8:54But He put them all outside, took her by the hand, and called, saying, “Child, arise.”
8:55And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat.
8:56And her parents were amazed; but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Chapter 9

9:1And calling together His twelve disciples, He gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases.
9:2And He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
9:3And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.
9:4And into whatever house you enter, remain there, and depart from there.
9:5And as many as do not receive you, when you go forth from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
9:6And going forth, they passed through the villages, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
9:7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was being done by Him, and he was perplexed, because some said that John had been raised from the dead;
9:8and some, that Elijah had appeared; and others, that one of the ancient prophets had risen.
9:9And Herod said, “John I beheaded; but who is this concerning whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see Him.
9:10And when the apostles returned, they told Him all they had done. And taking them with Him, He withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida.
9:11But when the crowds knew it, they followed Him; and receiving them, He spoke to them concerning the kingdom of God and healed those who had need of healing.
9:12And the day began to decline. And the Twelve came near and said to Him, “Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and fields, lodge, and find provisions; for we are here in a desolate place.”
9:13But He said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people.”
9:14For there were about five thousand men. And He said to His disciples, “Make them recline in groups of about fifty each.”
9:15And they did so and made them all recline.
9:16And taking the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
9:17And they all ate and were filled. And twelve baskets of broken pieces that remained to them were taken up.
9:18And it came to pass, as He was praying alone, that the disciples were with Him; and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say I am?”
9:19And they answered and said, “John the Immerser; but others, Elijah; and others, that one of the ancient prophets has risen.”
9:20And He said to them, “But you—who do you say I am?” And Peter answered and said, “The Anointed One of God.”
9:21And He strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,
9:22saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised on the third day.”
9:23And He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
9:24For whoever desires to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake, he will save it.
9:25For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, but loses or forfeits himself?
9:26For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
9:27But truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
9:28And it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.
9:29And it came to pass, as He prayed, that the appearance of His face was altered, and His clothing became dazzling white.
9:30And behold, two men were speaking with Him, who were Moses and Elijah.
9:31They appeared in glory and spoke of His departure, which He was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.
9:32But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.
9:33And it came to pass, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three shelters: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.
9:34And as he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
9:35And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, the Beloved; hear Him.”
9:36And when the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
9:37And it came to pass on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great crowd met Him.
9:38And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You, look upon my son, for he is my only son.
9:39And behold, a spirit seizes him, and suddenly he cries out; and it convulses him until he foams, and scarcely departs from him, bruising him.
9:40And I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they were not able.”
9:41And Jesus answered and said, “O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
9:42And while he was still approaching, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
9:43And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while all were marveling at everything Jesus did, He said to His disciples,
9:44“Let these words sink into your ears: the Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.”
9:45But they did not understand this saying, and it was veiled from them, so that they might not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.
9:46And a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest.
9:47But Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their heart, took a child and set him beside Him,
9:48and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My Name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all—he will be great.”
9:49And John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your Name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.”
9:50And Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”
9:51And it came to pass, when the days for His being taken up were being fulfilled, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem.
9:52And He sent messengers ahead of Him; and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for Him.
9:53But they did not receive Him, because His face was set toward Jerusalem.
9:54And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You desire that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, as Elijah also did?”
9:55But He turned and rebuked them and said, “You do not know what spirit you are of.
9:56For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” And they went on to another village.
9:57And as they went on the road, someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”
9:58And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
9:59And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”
9:60And Jesus said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
9:61And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but first permit me to say farewell to those in my house.”
9:62And Jesus said to him, “No one who has put his hand to a plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Chapter 10

10:1And after these things, the Lord also appointed seventy others and sent them two by two ahead of Him, into every city and place where He Himself was about to come.
10:2Then He said to them, “The harvest indeed is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest, that He may send forth workers into His harvest.
10:3Go; behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves.
10:4Carry no money bag, no travel bag, nor sandals; and greet no one along the way.
10:5And into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’
10:6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you.
10:7And remain in that same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.
10:8And into whatever city you enter, if they receive you, eat what is set before you.
10:9And heal the sick who are in it, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’
10:10But into whatever city you enter, if they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say,
10:11‘Even the dust from your city that clings to us we wipe off against you. Yet know this, that the kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’
10:12And I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.
10:13Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
10:14But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you.
10:15And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to Heaven, will be brought down to the realm of the dead.
10:16He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”
10:17And the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your Name!”
10:18And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
10:19Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will by any means harm you.
10:20Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names have been written in the heavens.”
10:21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of the heavens and of the earth, that You hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for so it was pleasing in Your sight.
10:22All things were delivered to Me by My Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, nor who the Father is except the Son, and he to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.”
10:23And turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
10:24For I say to you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see and did not see it, and to hear what you hear and did not hear it.”
10:25And behold, a certain expert in the Law stood up, testing Him and saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
10:26And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?”
10:27And he answered and said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”
10:28And He said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.”
10:29But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
10:30And Jesus answered and said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers, who stripped him, inflicted blows, and went away, leaving him half dead.
10:31And by chance a certain priest was going down that way; and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.
10:32And likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the opposite side.
10:33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion.
10:34And coming near, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him upon his own animal, brought him to an inn, and cared for him.
10:35And on the next day, when he departed, he took out two silver coins, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Care for him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.’
10:36Which of these three, then, seems to you to have become a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?”
10:37And he said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go, and you do likewise.”
10:38And it came to pass, as they journeyed, that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house.
10:39And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His word.
10:40But Martha was distracted with much serving; and coming near, she said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her, then, to help me.”
10:41And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things.
10:42But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Chapter 11

11:1And it came to pass, while He was praying in a certain place, that when He ceased, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
11:2And He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father who is in the heavens, may Your Name be held holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, as in Heaven, so also upon the earth.
11:3Give us each day our appointed bread.
11:4And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
11:5And He said to them, “Which of you will have a friend and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,
11:6for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;
11:7and he from within will answer and say, ‘Do not trouble me. The door is already shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot rise and give you anything’?
11:8I say to you, even if he does not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as much as he needs.
11:9And I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
11:10For everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.
11:11And which father among you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent instead of a fish?
11:12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
11:13If, then, you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
11:14And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. And it came to pass, when the demon had gone out, that the mute man spoke; and the crowds marveled.
11:15But certain of them said, “By Beelzebul, ruler of the demons, He casts out demons.”
11:16And others, testing Him, sought from Him a sign from heaven.
11:17But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and house falls upon house.
11:18And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.
11:19But if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
11:20But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
11:21When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own dwelling, his possessions are in peace.
11:22But when one stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes away all his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoils.
11:23He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters.
11:24When the unclean spirit goes out from the man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest; and not finding it, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came out.’
11:25And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order.
11:26Then it goes and takes with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself; and when they enter, they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
11:27And it came to pass, as He said these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts at which You nursed!”
11:28But He said, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
11:29And as the crowds gathered around Him, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
11:30For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.
11:31A queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, One greater than Solomon is here.
11:32Men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the proclamation of Jonah; and behold, One greater than Jonah is here.
11:33And no one, after lighting a lamp, puts it in a hidden place or under a basket, but upon a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light.
11:34The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is sound, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body is also full of darkness.
11:35Take heed, then, that the light in you is not darkness.
11:36If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole will be full of light, as when the lamp shines upon you with its brightness.”
11:37And while He was speaking, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. And He went in and reclined at the table.
11:38And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first immersed Himself before the meal.
11:39And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate, but your inward part is full of robbery and wickedness.
11:40Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside also make the inside?
11:41But give as alms the things that are within, and behold, all things are clean to you.
11:42But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint, rue, and every herb, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
11:43Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the chief seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.
11:44Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like unseen tombs, and the men who walk over them do not know it.”
11:45And one of the experts in the Law answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things, You insult us also.”
11:46And He said, “Woe to you experts in the Law also! For you load men with burdens grievous to bear, yet you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
11:47Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
11:48Thus you testify and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs.
11:49Therefore the wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’
11:50that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required from this generation—
11:51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the house. Yes, I say to you, it will be required from this generation.
11:52Woe to you experts in the Law! For you took away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”
11:53And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press Him closely and provoke Him to speak about many things,
11:54lying in wait for Him and seeking to catch something from His mouth, that they might accuse Him.

Chapter 12

12:1Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to speak first to His disciples: “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
12:2And there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.
12:3Therefore whatever you said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops.
12:4And I say to you, My friends, do not fear those who kill the body and after that can do nothing more.
12:5But I will show you whom you should fear: fear Him who, after killing, has authority to cast into the Valley of Hinnom. Yes, I say to you, fear Him.
12:6Are not five sparrows sold for two small copper coins? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.
12:7But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear; you are of greater worth than many sparrows.
12:8And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will also confess him before the angels of God.
12:9But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
12:10And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.
12:11And when they bring you before the synagogues, rulers, and authorities, do not be anxious how or what you should answer, or what you should say.
12:12For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
12:13And someone from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
12:14But He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or divider over you?”
12:15And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of all covetousness, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
12:16And He spoke a parable to them, saying, “The land of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly.
12:17And he reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’
12:18And he said, ‘This I will do: I will tear down my storehouses and build larger ones, and there I will gather all my crops and my goods.
12:19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease; eat, drink, be merry.’
12:20But God said to him, ‘Foolish one! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you prepared—whose will they be?’
12:21So is he who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
12:22And He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, what you may eat, nor for your body, what you may put on.
12:23Life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
12:24Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap; they have neither storeroom nor storehouse, yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than the birds!
12:25And who among you, by being anxious, is able to add one cubit to his height?
12:26If, then, you are not able to do even the least, why are you anxious about the rest?
12:27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they do not labor, nor do they spin; yet I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these.
12:28And if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is cast into an oven, how much more will He clothe you, you of little faith?
12:29And you, do not seek what you may eat or what you may drink, and do not be unsettled.
12:30For the nations of the world seek after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.
12:31But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things will be added to you.
12:32Do not fear, little flock, for your Father was pleased to give you the kingdom.
12:33Sell your possessions and give alms. Make for yourselves money bags that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in the heavens, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
12:34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
12:35Keep your belts fastened around your waists and your lamps burning.
12:36And be like men waiting for their lord when he returns from the wedding feast, so that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately.
12:37Blessed are those slaves whom the lord, when he comes, will find watching. Truly I say to you, he will fasten his belt, make them recline, and come near to serve them.
12:38And if he comes in the second watch, or in the third watch, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.
12:39But know this: if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and would not have permitted his house to be broken into.
12:40Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man comes at an hour when you do not think.”
12:41And Peter said to Him, “Lord, do You speak this parable to us, or also to all?”
12:42And the Lord said, “Who, then, is the faithful and wise steward whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?
12:43Blessed is that slave whom his lord, when he comes, will find doing so.
12:44Truly I say to you that he will set him over all his possessions.
12:45But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My lord delays his coming,’ and begins to beat the male servants and maidservants, and to eat and drink and become drunk,
12:46the lord of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in two and appoint his portion with the unfaithful.
12:47And that slave who knew his lord’s will but did not prepare or act according to his will will be beaten with many blows.
12:48But he who did not know, yet did things deserving of blows, will be beaten with few. And to everyone to whom much was given, much will be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him they will ask all the more.
12:49I came to cast fire upon the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
12:50But I have an immersion to be immersed with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!
12:51Do you think that I came to give peace upon the earth? No, I say to you, but rather division.
12:52For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two and two against three.
12:53A father will be divided against a son, and a son against a father; a mother against a daughter, and a daughter against a mother; a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
12:54And He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it is.
12:55And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘There will be heat,’ and it is so.
12:56Hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the earth and of the sky, but how is it that you do not discern this time?
12:57And why do you not judge even of yourselves what is right?
12:58For as you go with your opponent before the ruler, make every effort along the way to be released from him, lest he drag you before the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer cast you into prison.
12:59I say to you, you will by no means come out from there until you have repaid even the last small coin.”

Chapter 13

13:1Now there were some present at that time who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
13:2And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered such things?
13:3No, I say to you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
13:4Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you suppose they were greater debtors than all the men who dwell in Jerusalem?
13:5No, I say to you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
13:6And He spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.
13:7And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Behold, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down. Why should it also waste the ground?’
13:8And he answered and said to him, ‘Lord, leave it this year also, until I dig around it and add manure.
13:9And if it bears fruit—well; but if not, afterward you shall cut it down.’”
13:10And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
13:11And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit that had disabled her for eighteen years; and she was bent over and utterly unable to straighten herself.
13:12And when Jesus saw her, He called her near and said to her, “Woman, you are released from your disability.”
13:13And He laid His hands upon her, and immediately she stood upright and glorified God.
13:14But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, answered and said to the crowd, “There are six days in which work should be done; therefore come and be healed on those days, and not on the Sabbath day.”
13:15Then the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrite! Does not each of you on the Sabbath release his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it?
13:16And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound—behold, for eighteen years—be released from this bond on the Sabbath day?”
13:17And as He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the crowd rejoiced over all the glorious things done by Him.
13:18And He said, “To what is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?
13:19It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden; and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of the sky rested in its branches.”
13:20And again He said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
13:21It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until the whole was leavened.”
13:22And He was going through cities and villages, teaching and making His way toward Jerusalem.
13:23And a certain one said to Him, “Lord, are only a few being saved?” And He said to them,
13:24“Strive to enter through the narrow gate; for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
13:25Once the Master of the house has risen and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us,’ He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, or where you are from.’
13:26Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank before You, and You taught in our streets.’
13:27And He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know you, or where you are from. Depart from Me, all you who work unrighteousness.’
13:28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, while you yourselves are cast outside.
13:29And they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline in the kingdom of God.
13:30And behold, there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.”
13:31On that same day certain Pharisees came near, saying to Him, “Go out and depart from here, for Herod desires to kill You.”
13:32And He said to them, “Go and say to that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I am brought to completion.’
13:33Nevertheless, I must journey today and tomorrow and the following day, for it is not possible that a prophet perish outside Jerusalem.
13:34Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you! How often I wished to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing.
13:35Behold, your house is left to you desolate. And truly I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord.’”

Chapter 14

14:1And it came to pass, when He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching Him closely.
14:2And behold, a certain man suffering from swelling was before Him.
14:3And Jesus answered and spoke to the experts in the Law and the Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”
14:4But they were silent. And taking hold of him, He healed him and sent him away.
14:5And answering them, He said, “Which of you, if his donkey or ox falls into a pit, will not immediately pull it out on the Sabbath day?”
14:6And they could not answer Him concerning these things.
14:7And He spoke a parable to those who had been invited, when He observed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them:
14:8“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not recline in the highest place, lest someone more honorable than you have been invited by him,
14:9and he who invited both you and him comes and says to you, ‘Give this man your place,’ and then with shame you begin to take the lowest place.
14:10But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will have honor before those reclining with you.
14:11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
14:12And He also said to him who had invited Him, “When you give a midday meal or a dinner, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and repayment come to you.
14:13But when you make a feast, invite the poor, maimed, lame, and blind.
14:14And you will be blessed, because they have no means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
14:15And one of those reclining with Him, when he heard these things, said to Him, “Blessed is he who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
14:16Then He said to him, “A certain man made a great dinner and invited many.
14:17And he sent his slave at the hour of dinner to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’
14:18But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I bought a field and must go out and see it. I ask you, have me excused.’
14:19And another said, ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you, have me excused.’
14:20And another said, ‘I married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’
14:21And that slave came and reported these things to his lord. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, maimed, lame, and blind.’
14:22And the slave said, ‘Lord, it has been done as you commanded, and still there is room.’
14:23And the lord said to the slave, ‘Go out into the roads and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
14:24For I say to you that none of those men who were invited will taste my dinner.’”
14:25And great crowds were journeying with Him; and turning, He said to them,
14:26“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
14:27And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
14:28For who among you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?
14:29Lest, after he has laid a foundation and is unable to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,
14:30saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
14:31Or what king, going to meet another king in war, does not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
14:32Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
14:33So, then, every one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be My disciple.
14:34Salt is good; but if the salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?
14:35It is fit neither for the land nor for the manure pile; they cast it outside. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Chapter 15

15:1And all the tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to Him to hear Him.
15:2And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, “This One receives sinners and eats with them.”
15:3And He spoke this parable to them, saying,
15:4“What man among you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?
15:5And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
15:6And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’
15:7I say to you that in the same way there will be more joy in Heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who have no need of repentance.
15:8Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one silver coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and seek carefully until she finds it?
15:9And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the silver coin that I lost.’
15:10In the same way, I say to you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
15:11And He said, “A certain man had two sons.
15:12And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the possessions that falls to me.’ And he divided his possessions between them.
15:13And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and journeyed into a far country; and there he squandered his possessions in reckless living.
15:14And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need.
15:15And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.
15:16And he longed to fill his belly with the pods the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
15:17But coming to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have bread enough and to spare, while I perish here with hunger!
15:18I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you.
15:19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired workers.”’
15:20And he arose and went to his father. But while he was still far away, his father saw him and was moved with compassion; and he ran, fell on his neck, and kissed him.
15:21And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
15:22But the father said to his slaves, ‘Bring out the best robe and clothe him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
15:23And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate,
15:24for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
15:25Now his older son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
15:26And calling one of the servants near, he asked what these things meant.
15:27And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he received him back safe and sound.’
15:28But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him.
15:29And he answered and said to his father, ‘Behold, so many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a young goat that I might celebrate with my friends.
15:30But when this son of yours came, who devoured your possessions with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’
15:31And he said to him, ‘Child, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.
15:32But it was fitting to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and is found.’”

Chapter 16

16:1And He also said to His disciples, “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and this man was accused before him of wasting his possessions.
16:2And calling him, he said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’
16:3And the steward said to himself, ‘What will I do, since my lord is taking the stewardship away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.
16:4I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’
16:5And calling each one of his lord’s debtors near, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my lord?’
16:6And he said, ‘One hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and write fifty.’
16:7Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘One hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and write eighty.’
16:8And the lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.
16:9And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when you fail, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.
16:10He who is faithful in very little is also faithful in much; and he who is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much.
16:11If, then, you have not been faithful with unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?
16:12And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own?
16:13No slave can serve two lords; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”
16:14And the Pharisees also, being lovers of money, heard all these things and scoffed at Him.
16:15And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts; for what is exalted among men is an abomination before God.
16:16The Law and the Prophets were until John. Since then the good news of the Kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone presses into it.
16:17But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter to fall from the Law.
16:18Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and everyone who marries her who has been divorced from a husband commits adultery.
16:19And there was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and feasted splendidly every day.
16:20And a certain poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,
16:21and longing to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
16:22And it came to pass that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
16:23And lifting up his eyes in the realm of the dead, being in torment, he saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.
16:24And crying out, he said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’
16:25But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that in your life you received your good things, and Lazarus likewise received evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.
16:26And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that those who wish to cross from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross from there to us.’
16:27And he said, ‘Then I ask you, father, send him to my father’s house,
16:28for I have five brothers, that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’
16:29Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’
16:30And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
16:31And he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’”

Chapter 17

17:1And He said to the disciples, “It is impossible for stumbling-blocks not to come, but woe to the one through whom they come.
17:2It would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble.
17:3Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.
17:4And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”
17:5And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”
17:6And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
17:7But which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline’?
17:8Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare my supper, fasten your belt, and serve me until I have eaten and drunk; and afterward you may eat and drink’?
17:9Does he thank that slave because he did what was commanded? I think not.
17:10So also you, when you have done all the things commanded you, say, ‘We are unprofitable slaves; we have done what we ought to have done.’”
17:11And it came to pass, as He journeyed to Jerusalem, that He was passing between Samaria and Galilee.
17:12And as He entered a certain village, ten men with leprosy met Him, who stood at a distance.
17:13And they lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
17:14And when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And it came to pass, as they went, that they were cleansed.
17:15And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, glorifying God with a loud voice.
17:16And he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan.
17:17And Jesus answered and said, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where, then, are the nine?
17:18Was no one found to return and give glory to God except this foreigner?”
17:19And He said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has saved you.”
17:20And when He was questioned by the Pharisees as to when the Kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, “The Kingdom of God does not come in a way that can be observed,
17:21nor will they say, ‘Behold, here it is!’ or, ‘Behold, there!’ For behold, the Kingdom of God is in your midst.”
17:22And He said to His disciples, “Days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.
17:23And they will say to you, ‘Behold, here!’ or, ‘Behold, there!’ Do not go away or follow them.
17:24For as the lightning flashes from one part under heaven and shines to the other part under heaven, so will the Son of Man be in His day.
17:25But first it is necessary for Him to suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
17:26And as it came to pass in the days of Noah, so will it also be in the days of the Son of Man.
17:27They were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark; and the flood came and destroyed them all.
17:28Likewise, as it came to pass in the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, and building;
17:29but on the day Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all.
17:30It will be the same on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
17:31In that day, he who is on the housetop, and whose belongings are in the house, let him not come down to take them away; and likewise, he who is in the field, let him not turn back.
17:32Remember Lot’s wife.
17:33Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.
17:34I say to you, in that night there will be two men on one bed: one will be taken, and the other will be left.
17:35Two women will be grinding together: one will be taken, and the other will be left.
17:36Two men will be in the field: one will be taken, and the other will be left.”
17:37And they answered and said to Him, “Where, Lord?” And He said to them, “Where the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”

Chapter 18

18:1And He also spoke a parable to them, that they ought always to pray and not lose heart,
18:2saying, “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God and did not regard man.
18:3And there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’
18:4And for a time he would not; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I do not fear God or regard man,
18:5yet because this widow keeps troubling me, I will give her justice, lest by coming continually she wear me out.’”
18:6And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says.
18:7And will God not bring about justice for His chosen ones, who cry to Him day and night? Will He delay long over them?
18:8I say to you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”
18:9And He also spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded the rest with contempt:
18:10“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
18:11The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed these things: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like the rest of men—extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.
18:12I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all that I acquire.’
18:13But the tax collector, standing far away, would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’
18:14I say to you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
18:15And they were also bringing infants to Him, that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
18:16But Jesus called them near and said, “Permit the little children to come to Me, and do not forbid them, for of such is the Kingdom of God.
18:17Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”
18:18And a certain ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18:19And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except One—God.
18:20You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery; you shall not murder; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother.’”
18:21And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.”
18:22And when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing: sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven; and come, follow Me.”
18:23But when he heard these things, he became deeply sorrowful, for he was exceedingly rich.
18:24And when Jesus saw that he had become deeply sorrowful, He said, “How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter the Kingdom of God!
18:25For it is easier for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.”
18:26And those who heard it said, “Who, then, can be saved?”
18:27And He said, “The things impossible with men are possible with God.”
18:28And Peter said, “Behold, we have left all and followed You.”
18:29And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house, or parents, or brothers, or wife, or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God,
18:30who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come, eternal life.”
18:31And taking the Twelve aside, He said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things written through the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished.
18:32For He will be delivered up to the nations and will be mocked, insulted, and spit on;
18:33and after scourging Him, they will kill Him, and on the third day He will rise again.”
18:34And they understood none of these things; and this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know what was said.
18:35And it came to pass, as He drew near to Jericho, that a certain blind man was sitting beside the road begging.
18:36And hearing a crowd passing by, he asked what this might be.
18:37And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.
18:38And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
18:39And those who went before rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
18:40And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to Him. And when he came near, He questioned him,
18:41saying, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.”
18:42And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has saved you.”
18:43And immediately he received his sight and followed Him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Chapter 19

19:1And He entered Jericho and was passing through.
19:2And behold, there was a man named Zaccheus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich.
19:3And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but he could not because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.
19:4And running ahead, he climbed a sycamore-fig tree that he might see Him, for He was about to pass that way.
19:5And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up, saw him, and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
19:6And he hurried, came down, and received Him rejoicing.
19:7And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, “He has gone in to lodge with a sinful man.”
19:8And Zaccheus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore fourfold.”
19:9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.
19:10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
19:11And as they heard these things, He went on to speak a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they supposed that the Kingdom of God was about to appear immediately.
19:12He therefore said, “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom for himself and return.
19:13And calling ten of his slaves, he gave them ten measures of silver and said to them, ‘Do business until I come.’
19:14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
19:15And it came to pass, when he returned after receiving the kingdom, that he commanded these slaves to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what each had gained through business.
19:16And the first came near, saying, ‘Lord, your measure of silver has earned ten more.’
19:17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave! Because you were faithful in very little, have authority over ten cities.’
19:18And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your measure of silver has made five more.’
19:19And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’
19:20And another came, saying, ‘Lord, behold, your measure of silver, which I kept laid away in a cloth;
19:21for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man. You take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’
19:22And he said to him, ‘Wicked slave, I will judge you by your own mouth. You knew that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow.
19:23Why, then, did you not put my money in a bank, so that when I came I might have collected it with interest?’
19:24And he said to those standing by, ‘Take the measure of silver from him and give it to the one who has the ten measures.’
19:25And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten measures!’
19:26‘For I say to you that to everyone who has, more will be given; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
19:27But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and kill them before me.’”
19:28And after saying these things, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
19:29And it came to pass, as He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, that He sent two of His disciples,
19:30saying, “Go into the village before you, in which, upon entering, you will find a colt tied, on which no man has ever sat. Loose it and bring it.
19:31And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ you shall say to him, ‘The Lord has need of it.’”
19:32And those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them.
19:33And as they were loosing the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”
19:34And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
19:35And they brought it to Jesus; and casting their garments on the colt, they set Jesus on it.
19:36And as He went, they spread their garments on the road.
19:37And as He now drew near, at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen,
19:38saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the Name of the Lord! Peace in Heaven and glory in the highest!”
19:39And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
19:40And He answered and said to them, “I say to you that if these become silent, the stones will cry out.”
19:41And when He drew near and saw the city, He wept over it,
19:42saying, “If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
19:43For days will come upon you when your enemies will build a rampart around you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.
19:44And they will level you to the ground, and your children within you; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
19:45And entering the temple, He began to drive out those who sold and bought in it,
19:46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
19:47And He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people were seeking to destroy Him.
19:48And they could not find what they might do, for all the people hung on His words, listening.

Chapter 20

20:1And it came to pass, on one of those days, as He was teaching the people in the temple and proclaiming good news, that the chief priests and scribes came upon Him with the elders.
20:2And they spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is the one who gave You this authority?”
20:3And He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one question. Tell Me:
20:4The immersion of John—was it from Heaven or from men?”
20:5And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From Heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why, then, did you not believe him?’
20:6But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
20:7And they answered that they did not know where it was from.
20:8And Jesus said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
20:9And He began to speak this parable to the people: “A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to farmers, and went abroad for a long time.
20:10And at the season he sent a slave to the farmers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the farmers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
20:11And he went on to send another slave; but they beat and dishonored him also and sent him away empty-handed.
20:12And he went on to send a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.
20:13And the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps when they see him, they will respect him.’
20:14But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.’
20:15And they cast him outside the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
20:16He will come and destroy these farmers and give the vineyard to others.” And when they heard it, they said, “By no means!”
20:17But He looked at them and said, “What, then, is this that is written: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone’?
20:18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”
20:19And the chief priests and scribes sought to lay hands on Him in that hour, but they feared the people; for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them.
20:20And watching Him, they sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize upon His word and hand Him over to the rule and authority of the governor.
20:21And they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach rightly and show no partiality, but teach the way of God in truth.
20:22Is it lawful for us to pay tax to Caesar or not?”
20:23But perceiving their craftiness, He said to them, “Why do you test Me?
20:24Show Me a silver coin. Whose image and inscription does it bear?” And they answered, “Caesar’s.”
20:25And He said to them, “Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God.”
20:26And they could not seize upon His saying before the people; and marveling at His answer, they were silent.
20:27And some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came near and questioned Him,
20:28saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother, having a wife, dies childless, his brother is to take the wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
20:29There were, then, seven brothers. And the first took a wife and died childless;
20:30and the second took the wife, and he died childless;
20:31and the third took her, and likewise also the seven. They left no children and died.
20:32And last of all, the woman also died.
20:33In the resurrection, then, whose wife does she become? For the seven had her as wife.”
20:34And Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage;
20:35but those considered worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
20:36For they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
20:37But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed in the account of the bush, when he called the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’
20:38He is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to Him.”
20:39And some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.”
20:40And they no longer dared to question Him about anything.
20:41And He said to them, “How do they say that the Anointed One is the Son of David?
20:42For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand,
20:43until I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’
20:44David, therefore, calls Him Lord; how, then, is He his Son?”
20:45And while all the people were listening, He said to His disciples,
20:46“Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes and love greetings in the marketplaces, the places of honor in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets;
20:47who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

Chapter 21

21:1And looking up, He saw rich men putting their gifts into the treasury.
21:2And He also saw a certain poor widow putting in two small copper coins.
21:3And He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them;
21:4for all these put into the gifts of God out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in all the living she had.”
21:5And as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and devoted gifts, He said,
21:6“As for these things you behold, days will come when there will not be left one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
21:7And they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, when, then, will these things be? And what will be the sign when these things are about to happen?”
21:8And He said, “Take heed that you are not led astray; for many will come in My Name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them.
21:9And when you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be terrified; for these things must happen first, but the end will not come immediately.”
21:10Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom;
21:11and there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be terrors and great signs from Heaven.
21:12But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, and bringing you before kings and governors for My Name’s sake.
21:13It will turn out for you as a testimony.
21:14Settle it, therefore, in your hearts not to prepare beforehand how to answer;
21:15for I will give you a mouth and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to refute or resist.
21:16And you will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.
21:17And you will be hated by all because of My Name.
21:18Yet not a hair of your head will perish.
21:19By your endurance gain your lives.
21:20But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that her desolation has drawn near.
21:21Then let those in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in her midst depart, and let those in the countryside not enter her.
21:22For these are days of vengeance, that all things written may be fulfilled.
21:23But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse in those days! For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against this people.
21:24And they will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled by nations until the times of the nations are fulfilled.
21:25And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of sea and waves,
21:26men fainting from fear and expectation of the things coming upon the inhabited world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
21:27And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
21:28But when these things begin to happen, straighten yourselves and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”
21:29And He spoke a parable to them: “Behold the fig tree and all the trees.
21:30When they put forth leaves, you see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.
21:31So also you, when you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near.
21:32Truly I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away until all things come to pass.
21:33Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
21:34But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing and drunkenness and anxieties of life, and that day come upon you suddenly.
21:35For it will come as a snare upon all those dwelling on the face of all the earth.
21:36Watch, therefore, in every season, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that are about to come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
21:37And during the days He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and lodged on the Mount of Olives.
21:38And all the people came early to Him in the temple to hear Him.

Chapter 22

22:1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called Passover, was drawing near.
22:2And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might put Him to death, for they feared the people.
22:3Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve.
22:4And he went away and conferred with the chief priests and captains of the temple guard about how he might deliver Him up to them.
22:5And they rejoiced and agreed to give him money.
22:6And he consented and sought a favorable opportunity to deliver Him up to them when no crowd was present.
22:7Then came the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
22:8And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.”
22:9And they said to Him, “Where do You desire that we prepare it?”
22:10And He said to them, “Behold, when you enter the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters.
22:11And say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’
22:12And he will show you a large furnished upper room. Prepare it there.”
22:13And they went and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
22:14And when the hour came, He reclined at table, and the twelve apostles with Him.
22:15And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
22:16for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”
22:17And taking a cup and giving thanks, He said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves;
22:18for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes.”
22:19And taking bread and giving thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”
22:20Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.
22:21But behold, the hand of him who delivers Me up is with Me on the table.
22:22And indeed, the Son of Man goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man through whom He is delivered up!”
22:23And they began to question among themselves which of them it might be who was about to do this.
22:24And a dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered greatest.
22:25And He said to them, “The kings of the nations exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors.
22:26But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the younger, and the one who leads as one who serves.
22:27For who is greater: one who reclines at table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? Yet I am in your midst as One who serves.
22:28But you are those who have remained with Me in My trials.
22:29And I appoint to you a kingdom, as My Father appointed to Me,
22:30that you may eat and drink at My table in My Kingdom and sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
22:31And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to have all of you, that he might sift you as wheat;
22:32but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
22:33And he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death.”
22:34And He said, “I tell you, Peter, a rooster will not crow today before you deny three times that you know Me.”
22:35And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, travel bag, and sandals, did you lack anything?” And they said, “Nothing.”
22:36Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a travel bag; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.
22:37For I say to you, this that is written must yet be fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was numbered with lawless ones.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
22:38And they said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
22:39And going out, He went, according to custom, to the Mount of Olives; and His disciples also followed Him.
22:40And when He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
22:41And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed,
22:42saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
22:43And an angel from Heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
22:44And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly; and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground.
22:45And rising from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow.
22:46And He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, that you may not enter into temptation.”
22:47And while He was still speaking, behold, a crowd; and the one called Judas, one of the Twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.
22:48And Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you deliver up the Son of Man with a kiss?”
22:49And those around Him, seeing what was about to happen, said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
22:50And one of them struck the slave of the chief priest and cut off his right ear.
22:51And Jesus answered and said, “Allow this much.” And touching his ear, He healed him.
22:52And Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple guard, and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a robber?
22:53When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not stretch out your hands against Me; but this is your hour and the power of darkness.”
22:54And seizing Him, they led Him away and brought Him into the house of the chief priest. And Peter followed at a distance.
22:55And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.
22:56And a certain servant girl saw him sitting by the firelight, looked intently at him, and said, “This man also was with Him.”
22:57But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
22:58And after a little while, another saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.”
22:59And after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Truly this man also was with Him, for he too is a Galilean.”
22:60But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
22:61And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
22:62And Peter went outside and wept bitterly.
22:63And the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.
22:64And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and questioned Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is it who struck You?”
22:65And they spoke many other reviling things against Him.
22:66And when day came, the elders of the people gathered, together with the chief priests and scribes, and they led Him into their council,
22:67saying, “If You are the Anointed One, tell us.” And He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe;
22:68and if I also question you, you will by no means answer Me or release Me.
22:69From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
22:70And they all said, “Are You, then, the Son of God?” And He said to them, “You say that I am.”
22:71And they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from His mouth.”

Chapter 23

23:1And the whole multitude of them rose and led Him to Pilate.
23:2And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this One perverting the nation and forbidding us to pay tax to Caesar, saying that He Himself is the Anointed One, a king.”
23:3And Pilate questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, “You say it.”
23:4And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no fault in this Man.”
23:5But they were all the more insistent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to this place.”
23:6And when Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the Man was a Galilean.
23:7And learning that He was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself was also in Jerusalem in those days.
23:8And when Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly, for he had long desired to see Him because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some sign done by Him.
23:9And he questioned Him at length, but He answered him nothing.
23:10And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him.
23:11And Herod with his soldiers treated Him with contempt and mocked Him; and clothing Him in a radiant robe, he sent Him back to Pilate.
23:12And Pilate and Herod became friends with one another that day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.
23:13And Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,
23:14and said to them, “You brought this Man to me as one who perverts the people; and behold, having examined Him before you, I found no fault in this Man concerning the things of which you accuse Him.
23:15Nor did Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him.
23:16Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”
23:17For he was obliged to release one to them at the feast.
23:18And the whole multitude cried out, saying, “Away with this Man, and release Barabbas to us”—
23:19who had been cast into prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city, and for murder.
23:20Pilate, therefore, desiring to release Jesus, addressed them again.
23:21But they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”
23:22And he said to them a third time, “Why? What evil has He done? I have found no cause for death in Him. Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”
23:23But they pressed upon him with loud voices, demanding that He be crucified; and their voices and those of the chief priests prevailed.
23:24And Pilate gave judgment that their demand should be granted.
23:25And he released the man who had been cast into prison for insurrection and murder, whom they had requested; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
23:26And as they led Him away, they seized a certain Simon of Cyrene, coming from the countryside, and laid the cross upon him to carry it behind Jesus.
23:27And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who beat their breasts and lamented Him.
23:28But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
23:29For behold, days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’
23:30Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’
23:31For if they do these things in the green tree, what will happen in the dry?”
23:32And two others, who were evildoers, were also led with Him to be put to death.
23:33And when they came to the place called the Place of the Skull, there they crucified Him and the evildoers, one on the right and the other on the left.
23:34And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And dividing His garments, they cast lots.
23:35And the people stood looking on. And the rulers also sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself, if He is the Anointed One, the Chosen One of God.”
23:36And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming near and offering Him sour wine,
23:37and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
23:38And there was also an inscription written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
23:39And one of the evildoers who were hanged reviled Him, saying, “If You are the Anointed One, save Yourself and us.”
23:40But the other answered and rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment?
23:41And we indeed justly, for we receive what our deeds deserve; but this Man has done nothing wrong.”
23:42And he said to Jesus, “Remember me, Lord, when You come in Your Kingdom.”
23:43And Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
23:44And it was about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.
23:45And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
23:46And crying with a loud voice, Jesus said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” And having said this, He breathed His last.
23:47And when the captain of a hundred saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Truly this Man was righteous.”
23:48And all the crowds who had come together to this sight, beholding the things that had happened, returned striking their breasts.
23:49And all His acquaintances stood at a distance, and the women who had followed Him from Galilee, watching these things.
23:50And behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and righteous man.
23:51He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, and was himself waiting for the Kingdom of God; he had not consented to their counsel and deed.
23:52This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
23:53And taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and laid it in a tomb hewn out of rock, where no one had yet been laid.
23:54And it was the Day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near.
23:55And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.
23:56And returning, they prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

Chapter 24

24:1Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb carrying the spices they had prepared, and certain others with them.
24:2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
24:3And going in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
24:4And while they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling garments.
24:5And as they became afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the Living One among the dead?
24:6He is not here, but was raised. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee,
24:7saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and rise on the third day.’”
24:8And they remembered His words.
24:9And returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest.
24:10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles.
24:11And their words appeared to them as idle talk, and they did not believe them.
24:12But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying alone. And he went away to his own home, wondering at what had come to pass.
24:13And behold, two of them were going that same day to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
24:14And they were conversing with one another about all these things that had happened.
24:15And it came to pass, while they conversed and reasoned together, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them.
24:16But their eyes were restrained from recognizing Him.
24:17And He said to them, “What are these words that you exchange with one another as you walk, and why are you sad?”
24:18And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
24:19And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;
24:20and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him up to a judgment of death and crucified Him.
24:21But we were hoping that He was the One about to redeem Israel. And besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
24:22And certain women among us also astonished us. They went early to the tomb,
24:23and not finding His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He is alive.
24:24And certain of those with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
24:25And He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
24:26Was it not necessary for the Anointed One to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”
24:27And beginning from Moses and from all the Prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Writings the things concerning Himself.
24:28And they drew near to the village where they were going, and He made as though He would go farther.
24:29But they urged Him, saying, “Remain with us, for it is toward evening, and the day has declined.” And He went in to remain with them.
24:30And it came to pass, as He reclined at table with them, that He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
24:31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.
24:32And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us while He spoke to us on the road, and while He opened the Writings to us?”
24:33And rising that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem and found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,
24:34saying, “The Lord was indeed raised and appeared to Simon.”
24:35And they recounted the things that happened on the road, and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
24:36And as they were speaking these things, Jesus Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace to you.”
24:37But they were startled and became frightened, thinking they saw a spirit.
24:38And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
24:39Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see Me have.”
24:40And having said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.
24:41And while they still disbelieved for joy and marveled, He said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
24:42And they gave Him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb.
24:43And taking it, He ate before them.
24:44And He said to them, “These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you: all things written concerning Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
24:45Then He opened their understanding to understand the Writings.
24:46And He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Anointed One to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day,
24:47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His Name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
24:48And you are witnesses of these things.
24:49And behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you; but remain in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.”
24:50And He led them out as far as Bethany; and lifting up His hands, He blessed them.
24:51And it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into Heaven.
24:52And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
24:53and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. So be it.
