Chapter 1

1:1And it came to pass after the death of Moses, servant of the LORD, that the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying,
1:2“My servant Moses is dead. And now arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land which I am giving them—the sons of Israel.
1:3Every place on which the sole of your foot treads I have given you, as I spoke to Moses.
1:4From this wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the Euphrates—all the land of the Hittites—and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun shall be your border.
1:5No man shall stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, I shall be with you. I shall not fail you or forsake you.
1:6Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
1:7Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the Law which Moses My servant commanded you. You shall not turn aside from it to the right or to the left, so that you may prosper wherever you go.
1:8This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it by day and by night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall succeed.
1:9Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
1:10And Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
1:11“Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, saying, Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you shall cross this Jordan, to enter and possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess.”
1:12And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua spoke, saying,
1:13“Remember the word which Moses, servant of the LORD, commanded you, saying, The LORD your God is giving you rest and has given you this land.
1:14Your wives, your children, and your possessions shall remain in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but you shall cross over in battle array before your brothers, all the mighty warriors, and shall help them,
1:15until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as He has to you, and they also possess the land which the LORD your God is giving them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession and possess it, which Moses, servant of the LORD, gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.”
1:16Then they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we shall do, and wherever you send us we shall go.
1:17Just as we listened to Moses in all things, so we shall listen to you; only may the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses.
1:18Any man who rebels against your command and does not listen to your words in all that you command him shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

Chapter 2

2:1Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men as spies from Shittim, saying, “Go, view the land and Jericho.” And they went and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and lodged there.
2:2And it was told to the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.”
2:3Then the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who came to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.”
2:4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.
2:5And at nightfall, when the gate was about to be shut, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.”
2:6But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them among the stalks of flax which she had arranged on the roof.
2:7And the men pursued them by the way of the Jordan to the fords; and as soon as the pursuers had gone out after them, they shut the gate.
2:8And before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof.
2:9And she said to the men, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the dread of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted before you.
2:10For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Sea of Reeds before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.
2:11And when we heard it, our hearts melted, and no courage remained in anyone because of you; for the LORD your God, He is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.
2:12And now, please swear to me by the LORD, since I have shown kindness to you, that you also will show kindness to my father’s house, and give me a sure sign,
2:13and spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that belongs to them, and deliver our lives from death.”
2:14Then the men said to her, “Our lives for yours, even to death! If you do not reveal this matter of ours, then when the LORD gives us the land, we shall show kindness and faithfulness to you.”
2:15Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was in the wall of the city, and she dwelt in the wall.
2:16And she said to them, “Go to the hill country, lest the pursuers meet you, and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers return; afterward you may go on your way.”
2:17And the men said to her, “We shall be free from this oath of yours which you made us swear,
2:18unless, when we come into the land, you bind this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and gather your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household into your house.
2:19And it shall be that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be innocent; but anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our heads if a hand is laid upon him.
2:20But if you reveal this matter of ours, then we shall be free from your oath which you made us swear.”
2:21And she said, “Let it be according to your words.” Then she sent them away, and they went; and she bound the scarlet cord in the window.
2:22And they went and came to the hill country, and remained there three days, until the pursuers returned. And the pursuers searched along every road, but did not find them.
2:23Then the two men returned, came down from the hill country, crossed over, and came to Joshua son of Nun; and they recounted to him all that had happened to them.
2:24And they said to Joshua, “Surely the LORD has given all the land into our hand; indeed, all the inhabitants of the land have melted before us.”

Chapter 3

3:1Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and they set out from Shittim and came to the Jordan, he and all the sons of Israel; and they lodged there before they crossed over.
3:2And it came to pass at the end of three days that the officers passed through the midst of the camp,
3:3and commanded the people, saying, “When you see the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD your God, with the priests, the Levites, carrying it, then you shall set out from your place and follow it.
3:4Yet there shall be a distance between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, so that you may know the way by which you shall go, for you have not passed this way before.”
3:5Then Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD shall do wonders among you.”
3:6And Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the Ark of the Covenant and cross over before the people.” And they took up the Ark of the Covenant and went before the people.
3:7Then the LORD said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so that they may know that as I was with Moses, I shall be with you.
3:8And you shall command the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant, saying, When you come to the edge of the waters of the Jordan, stand still in the Jordan.”
3:9Then Joshua said to the sons of Israel, “Draw near and hear the words of the LORD your God.”
3:10And Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He shall surely dispossess from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites:
3:11behold, the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing before you into the Jordan.
3:12And now, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man—one man for a tribe.
3:13And it shall be, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests carrying the Ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off—the waters flowing down from above—and they shall stand in one heap.”
3:14And it came to pass, when the people set out from their tents to cross the Jordan, that the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant were before the people;
3:15and when those carrying the Ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests carrying the Ark were dipped in the edge of the waters—for the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the days of harvest—
3:16then the waters flowing down from above stood and rose in one heap very far away at Adam, the city beside Zarethan; and the waters flowing down toward the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. And the people crossed opposite Jericho.
3:17And the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed on dry ground, until the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan.

Chapter 4

4:1And when the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,
4:2“Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man—one man from each tribe.
4:3And command them, saying, Take up twelve stones from here, from the midst of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet stood firm; carry them over with you, and set them down at the place where you lodge tonight.”
4:4Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man—one man from each tribe.
4:5And Joshua said to them, “Cross before the Ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each of you lift up one stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel,
4:6so that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask hereafter, saying, What do these stones mean to you?
4:7then you shall say to them, The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.”
4:8Then the sons of Israel did as Joshua commanded: they took up twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, as the LORD had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and set them down there.
4:9And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, at the place where the feet of the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant had stood; and they are there to this day.
4:10And the priests carrying the Ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the LORD had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people hurried and crossed over.
4:11And when all the people had finished crossing, the Ark of the LORD and the priests crossed over before the people.
4:12Then the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over in battle array before the sons of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them.
4:13About forty thousand armed for battle crossed over before the LORD to the plains of Jericho.
4:14On that day the LORD made Joshua great in the sight of all Israel, and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life.
4:15Then the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,
4:16“Command the priests carrying the Ark of the Testimony to come up out of the Jordan.”
4:17And Joshua commanded the priests, saying, “Come up out of the Jordan.”
4:18And when the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD came up from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet rested on dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its banks as before.
4:19And the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped at Gilgal, on the eastern border of Jericho.
4:20And those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal.
4:21Then he spoke to the sons of Israel, saying, “When your sons ask their fathers hereafter, saying, What are these stones?
4:22then you shall make your sons know, saying, Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.
4:23For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the LORD your God did to the Sea of Reeds, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over,
4:24so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, and so that you may fear the LORD your God all the days.”

Chapter 5

5:1And when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts melted, and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the sons of Israel.
5:2At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again, a second time.”
5:3Then Joshua made flint knives for himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the Hill of the Foreskins.
5:4And this is the reason Joshua circumcised them: all the males among the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness along the way after they came out of Egypt.
5:5For all the people who came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness along the way after they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised.
5:6For the sons of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until the whole nation—the men of war who came out of Egypt—had perished, because they did not listen to the voice of the LORD. The LORD had sworn to them that He would not let them see the land which the LORD had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
5:7And their sons, whom He raised up in their place, Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them along the way.
5:8And when the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained in their places in the camp until they recovered.
5:9Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away from you the reproach of Egypt.” Therefore the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day.
5:10Then the sons of Israel encamped at Gilgal, and observed the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plains of Jericho.
5:11And on the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain.
5:12Then the manna ceased on the day after they ate of the produce of the land; and there was no longer manna for the sons of Israel, but they ate of the yield of the land of Canaan that year.
5:13And when Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked; and behold, a man stood before him with His drawn sword in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said, “Are You for us, or for our adversaries?”
5:14Then He said, “No; but I am Commander of the LORD’s army. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and bowed himself, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”
5:15Then the Commander of the LORD’s army said to Joshua, “Remove your sandal from your foot, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Chapter 6

6:1Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the sons of Israel; none went out, and none came in.
6:2Then the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and its mighty warriors.
6:3And all you men of war shall march around the city, going around the city once. Thus you shall do for six days.
6:4And seven priests shall carry seven ram’s-horn trumpets before the Ark; and on the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.
6:5And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up, each one straight before him.”
6:6Then Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the Ark of the Covenant, and let seven priests carry seven ram’s-horn trumpets before the Ark of the LORD.”
6:7Then he said to the people, “Cross over and march around the city, and let the armed men cross before the Ark of the LORD.”
6:8And when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven ram’s-horn trumpets before the LORD crossed over and blew the trumpets; and the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD followed them.
6:9And the armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the Ark, while the trumpets sounded continually.
6:10And Joshua commanded the people, saying, “Do not shout, nor let your voice be heard, nor let a word go out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, Shout! Then you shall shout.”
6:11So the Ark of the LORD went around the city, circling it once; then they came into the camp and lodged in the camp.
6:12And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the Ark of the LORD.
6:13And the seven priests carrying the seven ram’s-horn trumpets before the Ark of the LORD went on continually, blowing the trumpets; and the armed men went before them, while the rear guard followed the Ark of the LORD, and the trumpets sounded continually.
6:14Then they marched around the city once on the second day, and returned to the camp. Thus they did for six days.
6:15And on the seventh day they rose early, at the rising of the dawn, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times; only on that day did they march around the city seven times.
6:16And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout! For the LORD has given you the city.
6:17And the city shall be devoted to destruction, it and all that is in it, for the LORD. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.
6:18But keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest you yourselves become devoted to destruction by taking from them, and make the camp of Israel devoted to destruction and bring trouble upon it.
6:19But all the silver and gold, and the articles of bronze and iron, are holy to the LORD; they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.”
6:20Then the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets. And when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat; and the people went up into the city, each one straight before him, and they captured the city.
6:21And they devoted to destruction all that was in the city, man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep and donkey, by the edge of the sword.
6:22Then Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the house of the prostitute, and bring out the woman from there, with all who belong to her, as you swore to her.”
6:23Then the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brothers, and all who belonged to her. They brought out all her relatives and placed them outside the camp of Israel.
6:24And they burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and the gold, and the vessels of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.
6:25But Rahab the prostitute, and her father’s household, and all who belonged to her, Joshua kept alive; and she dwelt among Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
6:26And Joshua made them swear at that time, saying, “Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn he shall lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest he shall set up its gates.”
6:27And the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread through all the land.

Chapter 7

7:1But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully concerning the things devoted to destruction, for Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took from the things devoted to destruction; and the anger of the LORD burned against the sons of Israel.
7:2Then Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” And the men went up and spied out Ai.
7:3Then they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up. Let about two thousand men, or about three thousand men, go up and strike Ai. Do not make all the people toil there, for they are few.”
7:4So about three thousand men of the people went up there, but they fled before the men of Ai.
7:5And the men of Ai struck about thirty-six of them, and pursued them from the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them on the descent; and the heart of the people melted and became as water.
7:6Then Joshua tore his garments and fell on his face to the earth before the Ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
7:7Then Joshua said, “Ah, Lord, the LORD, why have You brought this people across the Jordan at all, only to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to remain beyond the Jordan!
7:8O Lord, what shall I say, after Israel has turned its back before its enemies?
7:9For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. And what will You do for Your great Name?”
7:10Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Rise! Why have you fallen on your face?
7:11Israel has sinned; they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. They have taken from the things devoted to destruction; they have also stolen and deceived, and have put them among their own vessels.
7:12Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted to destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you destroy the things devoted to destruction from your midst.
7:13Rise, consecrate the people, and say, Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow. For thus says the LORD, God of Israel: Things devoted to destruction are among you, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you remove the things devoted to destruction from your midst.
7:14And in the morning you shall be brought near by your tribes. The tribe which the LORD takes shall come near by families; the family which the LORD takes shall come near by households; and the household which the LORD takes shall come near man by man.
7:15And he who is taken with the things devoted to destruction shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD and has done an outrageous thing in Israel.”
7:16So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near by its tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken.
7:17And he brought the families of Judah near, and the family of the Zerahites was taken; and he brought the family of the Zerahites near man by man, and Zabdi was taken.
7:18And he brought his household near man by man, and Achan—son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah—was taken.
7:19Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, please give glory to the LORD, God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and now tell me what you have done. Do not hide it from me.”
7:20Then Achan answered Joshua and said, “Truly I have sinned against the LORD, God of Israel; and this is what I have done.
7:21When I saw among the spoil a fine robe from Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and one bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I desired them and took them. And behold, they are hidden in the ground within my tent, with the silver underneath.”
7:22Then Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath.
7:23And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the sons of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
7:24Then Joshua took Achan son of Zerah, with the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons and his daughters, his ox and his donkey, his flock and his tent, and all that belonged to him; and all Israel with him brought them up to the Valley of Achor.
7:25Then Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The LORD shall trouble you this day.” And all Israel stoned him with stones; then they burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.
7:26And they raised over him a great heap of stones, which remains to this day. Then the LORD turned from the heat of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.

Chapter 8

8:1Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not fear or be dismayed. Take with you all the people of war, and rise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.
8:2And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king; only its spoil and its livestock you may take as spoil for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”
8:3Then Joshua rose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai. And Joshua chose thirty thousand men, mighty warriors, and sent them away by night.
8:4And he commanded them, saying, “See, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Do not go very far from the city, and all of you be ready.
8:5And I and all the people who are with me shall draw near to the city; and when they come out to meet us as at the first, we shall flee before them.
8:6And they shall come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, They are fleeing before us as at the first. So we shall flee before them.
8:7Then you shall rise from the ambush and take possession of the city; and the LORD your God shall give it into your hand.
8:8And when you have captured the city, you shall set the city on fire. You shall do according to the word of the LORD. See, I have commanded you.”
8:9Then Joshua sent them away, and they went to the place of ambush and remained between Bethel and Ai, west of Ai; but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
8:10And Joshua rose early in the morning and mustered the people; and he went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
8:11And all the people of war who were with him went up and drew near, and came before the city; and they encamped north of Ai, with the valley between them and Ai.
8:12Then he took about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, west of the city.
8:13So they stationed the people—the whole camp north of the city, with its rear west of the city—and that night Joshua went into the midst of the valley.
8:14And when the king of Ai saw it, the men of the city hurried and rose early, and went out to meet Israel for battle, he and all his people, at the appointed place before the Arabah. But he did not know that an ambush had been set against him behind the city.
8:15And Joshua and all Israel pretended to be struck before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
8:16Then all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them; and they pursued Joshua and were drawn away from the city.
8:17And not a man was left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel; and they left the city open and pursued Israel.
8:18Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the javelin in his hand toward the city.
8:19Then the ambush rose quickly from its place, and they ran as soon as he stretched out his hand, entered the city, and captured it; and they hurried and set the city on fire.
8:20And when the men of Ai looked behind them, behold, the smoke of the city rose to the heavens; and they had no way to flee here or there. Then the people who had fled toward the wilderness turned against their pursuers.
8:21And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city, and that the smoke of the city had risen, they turned back and struck the men of Ai.
8:22And the others came out of the city against them, so that they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side; and Israel struck them until no survivor or fugitive remained.
8:23But they captured the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.
8:24And when Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness where they had pursued them, and all had fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it by the edge of the sword.
8:25And all who fell that day, both men and women, were twelve thousand—all the people of Ai.
8:26For Joshua did not draw back his hand with which he had stretched out the javelin until he had devoted all the inhabitants of Ai to destruction.
8:27Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as spoil for themselves, according to the word of the LORD which He had commanded Joshua.
8:28Then Joshua burned Ai and made it a ruin forever, a desolation to this day.
8:29And he hung the king of Ai on a tree until evening. And at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, cast it at the entrance of the city gate, and raised over it a great heap of stones, which remains to this day.
8:30Then Joshua built an altar to the LORD, God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
8:31as Moses, servant of the LORD, had commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses—an altar of uncut stones, over which no one had wielded iron. And they offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings.
8:32And there on the stones he wrote a copy of the Law of Moses, in the presence of the sons of Israel.
8:33And all Israel, with its elders and officers and its judges, stood on this side and on that side of the Ark, before the priests, the Levites, who carried the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD—the sojourner as well as the native. Half of them stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses, servant of the LORD, had commanded at the first, to bless the people of Israel.
8:34And afterward he read aloud all the words of the Law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law.
8:35There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read aloud before all the assembly of Israel, with the women and the children and the sojourners who walked among them.

Chapter 9

9:1And when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and along all the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon—the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites—heard of it,
9:2they gathered together with one accord to fight against Joshua and Israel.
9:3But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
9:4they also acted with cunning: they went and pretended to be envoys, and took worn-out sacks for their donkeys, and worn-out wineskins, split and mended,
9:5with worn-out and patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out garments upon them; and all the bread of their provisions was dry and crumbled.
9:6Then they went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a faraway land; now therefore, make a covenant with us.”
9:7Then the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell among us; how then can we make a covenant with you?”
9:8And they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them, “Who are you, and from where do you come?”
9:9Then they said to him, “Your servants have come from a very faraway land because of the Name of the LORD your God; for we have heard of His fame, and of all that He did in Egypt,
9:10and of all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
9:11And our elders and all the inhabitants of our land spoke to us, saying, Take provisions in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them; and say to them, We are your servants; now therefore, make a covenant with us.
9:12This bread of ours was hot when we took it from our houses as provisions on the day we set out to come to you; but now, behold, it is dry and crumbled.
9:13And these wineskins were new when we filled them; but behold, they have split. And these garments and sandals of ours have worn out because of the very long journey.”
9:14Then the men took some of their provisions, but did not seek counsel from the LORD.
9:15And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.
9:16And at the end of three days, after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors and dwelt among them.
9:17Then the sons of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
9:18And the sons of Israel did not strike them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, God of Israel; and all the congregation murmured against the leaders.
9:19Then all the leaders said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by the LORD, God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
9:20This is what we shall do to them: we shall let them live, so that wrath may not come upon us because of the oath which we swore to them.”
9:21And the leaders said to them, “Let them live.” So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the leaders had spoken concerning them.
9:22Then Joshua called for them and spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, We are very far from you, when you dwell among us?
9:23Now therefore, you are cursed, and you shall never cease being servants—hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.”
9:24Then they answered Joshua and said, “Because it was certainly told to your servants that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you. So we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing.
9:25And now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it is good and right in your sight.”
9:26And so he did to them, and delivered them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they did not kill them.
9:27And on that day Joshua made them hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to this day, at the place which He would choose.

Chapter 10

10:1And when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and devoted it to destruction—as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king—and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,
10:2they were greatly afraid, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty men.
10:3Then Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,
10:4“Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the sons of Israel.”
10:5So the five kings of the Amorites—the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon—gathered together and went up, they and all their armies; and they encamped against Gibeon and fought against it.
10:6Then the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying, “Do not withdraw your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly, and save us and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill-country have gathered against us.”
10:7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty warriors.
10:8Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have given them into your hand; not a man among them shall stand before you.”
10:9And Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched all night from Gilgal.
10:10And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, and struck them with a great slaughter at Gibeon; and Israel pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
10:11And as they fled before Israel, while they were on the descent of Beth-horon, the LORD cast great hailstones upon them from the heavens as far as Azekah, and they died. More died from the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.
10:12Then Joshua spoke to the LORD on the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over before the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
10:13And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation had taken vengeance upon its enemies. Is this not written in the Book of the Upright? “And the sun stopped in the midst of the heavens, and did not hurry to go down for about a whole day.”
10:14And there has been no day like it before or after it, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.
10:15Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
10:16But these five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.
10:17And it was told to Joshua, saying, “The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah.”
10:18Then Joshua said, “Roll great stones against the mouth of the cave, and appoint men over it to guard them.
10:19But do not stand still. Pursue your enemies and strike their rear; do not allow them to enter their cities, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand.”
10:20And when Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a very great slaughter, the survivors who remained of them entered the fortified cities.
10:21Then all the people returned safely to Joshua at the camp at Makkedah; not one dared move his tongue against any of the sons of Israel.
10:22Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out these five kings to me from the cave.”
10:23And they did so, and brought out to him these five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
10:24And when they had brought these kings out to Joshua, Joshua called all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the men of war who had gone with him, “Draw near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” And they drew near and put their feet on their necks.
10:25Then Joshua said to them, “Do not fear or be dismayed. Be strong and courageous; for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom you fight.”
10:26And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and hung them on five trees; and they hung on the trees until evening.
10:27And at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees, cast them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and put great stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.
10:28And Joshua captured Makkedah on that day and struck it by the edge of the sword; and he devoted its king and every person who was in it to destruction. He left no survivor, and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
10:29Then Joshua passed on, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.
10:30And the LORD also gave it and its king into the hand of Israel; and Joshua struck it by the edge of the sword, and every person who was in it. He left no survivor in it, and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
10:31Then Joshua passed on, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish; and he encamped against it and fought against it.
10:32And the LORD gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day and struck it by the edge of the sword, and every person who was in it, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
10:33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people until he had left him no survivor.
10:34Then Joshua passed on, and all Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon; and they encamped against it and fought against it.
10:35And they captured it on that day and struck it by the edge of the sword; and every person who was in it he devoted to destruction on that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
10:36Then Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron; and they fought against it.
10:37And they captured it and struck it by the edge of the sword, with its king and all its cities and every person who was in it. He left no survivor, according to all that he had done to Eglon; and he devoted it and every person who was in it to destruction.
10:38Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it.
10:39And he captured it, with its king and all its cities; and they struck them by the edge of the sword and devoted every person who was in it to destruction. He left no survivor. As he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, and as he had done to Libnah and its king.
10:40So Joshua struck all the land—the hill-country, the Negev, the lowland, and the slopes—and all their kings. He left no survivor, and devoted every breathing thing to destruction, as the LORD, God of Israel, had commanded.
10:41And Joshua struck them from Kadesh-Barnea as far as Gaza, and all the land of Goshen as far as Gibeon.
10:42And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD, God of Israel, fought for Israel.
10:43Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Chapter 11

11:1And when Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
11:2and to the kings who were in the north, in the hill-country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor westward,
11:3to the Canaanites on the east and on the west, and to the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill-country, and the Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.
11:4And they went out, they and all their armies with them, a people as numerous as the sand on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots.
11:5And all these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
11:6Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid because of them, for about this time tomorrow I will give them all over slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”
11:7So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom; and they fell upon them suddenly.
11:8And the LORD gave them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them and pursued them as far as Great Sidon, and Misrephoth-Maim, and the Valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they struck them until they left no survivor.
11:9And Joshua did to them as the LORD had commanded him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.
11:10Then Joshua turned back at that time and captured Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor had formerly been the chief of all these kingdoms.
11:11And they struck every person who was in it by the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction; he left no one breathing. And he burned Hazor with fire.
11:12And Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, and struck them by the edge of the sword. He devoted them to destruction, as Moses, servant of the LORD, had commanded.
11:13But Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned.
11:14And all the spoil of these cities, and the livestock, the sons of Israel took as spoil for themselves. But every person they struck by the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them; they left no one breathing.
11:15As the LORD had commanded Moses His servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He did not omit a word of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
11:16So Joshua took all this land: the hill-country, and all the Negev, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland, and the Arabah, even the hill-country of Israel and its slopes,
11:17from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Ba‘al-Gad in the Valley of Lebanon beneath Mount Hermon. And he captured all their kings, and struck them and put them to death.
11:18Joshua made war with all these kings for many days.
11:19There was not a city that made peace with the sons of Israel except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon; they took all the rest in battle.
11:20For it was from the LORD to harden their hearts, so that they would meet Israel in battle and be devoted to destruction, and so that there would be no mercy for them, but that they would be destroyed, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
11:21And Joshua came at that time and cut off the Anakim from the hill-country—from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill-country of Judah, and from all the hill-country of Israel. Joshua devoted them and their cities to destruction.
11:22No Anakim remained in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain.
11:23So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had spoken to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions. And the land had rest from war.

Chapter 12

12:1Now these are the kings of the land whom the sons of Israel struck, and whose land they possessed beyond the Jordan eastward, from the Brook of Arnon to Mount Hermon, including all the Arabah eastward:
12:2Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon and ruled from Aroer, which was on the edge of the Brook of Arnon, and from the middle of the valley, and over half of Gilead, as far as the Brook of Jabbok, the border of the Ammonites;
12:3and over the Arabah as far as the Sea of Chinneroth eastward, and as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, eastward toward Beth-jeshimoth; and southward below the slopes of Pisgah.
12:4And the territory of Og king of Bashan, who was of the remnant of the Rephaim and dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,
12:5and ruled over Mount Hermon, and Salecah, and all Bashan, as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and over half of Gilead, as far as the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.
12:6Moses, servant of the LORD, and the sons of Israel struck them; and Moses, servant of the LORD, gave their land as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
12:7And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the sons of Israel struck beyond the Jordan westward, from Ba‘al-Gad in the Valley of Lebanon as far as Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir; and Joshua gave their land to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their tribal divisions,
12:8in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the Arabah, and on the slopes, and in the wilderness, and in the Negev: the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:
12:9the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which was beside Bethel, one;
12:10the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;
12:11the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;
12:12the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;
12:13the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;
12:14the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;
12:15the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;
12:16the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;
12:17the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;
12:18the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;
12:19the king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one;
12:20the king of Shimron-Meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one;
12:21the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;
12:22the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam of Carmel, one;
12:23the king of Dor in the heights of Dor, one; the king of the nations at Gilgal, one;
12:24the king of Tirzah, one; thirty-one kings in all.

Chapter 13

13:1Now Joshua was old and advanced in years; and the LORD said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and very much land remains to be possessed.
13:2This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all that of the Geshurites,
13:3from Shihor, which is east of Egypt, as far as the border of Ekron northward, which is reckoned as Canaanite territory; the five rulers of the Philistines—the Gazites, the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites—and the Avvim;
13:4to the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah, which belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;
13:5and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon toward the east, from Ba‘al-Gad below Mount Hermon as far as Lebo-hamath;
13:6all the inhabitants of the hill-country, from Lebanon as far as Misrephoth-Maim, all the Sidonians. I Myself will dispossess them before the sons of Israel. Only allot it to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you.
13:7And now, apportion this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”
13:8With the other half-tribe of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites received the inheritance Moses had given them beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses, servant of the LORD, had given them:
13:9from Aroer, which was on the edge of the Brook of Arnon, and the city which was in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba as far as Dibon;
13:10and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the Ammonites;
13:11and Gilead, and the territory of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah;
13:12all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei. He was left of the remnant of the Rephaim; and Moses struck them and dispossessed them.
13:13But the sons of Israel did not dispossess the Geshurites or the Maacathites; and Geshur and Maacah dwell among Israel to this day.
13:14Only to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the offerings by fire of the LORD, God of Israel, are their inheritance, as He had spoken to them.
13:15Then Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the sons of Reuben according to their families.
13:16And their territory was from Aroer, which was on the edge of the Brook of Arnon, and the city which was in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeba;
13:17Heshbon, and all its cities which were in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-Ba‘al, and Beth-Ba‘al-Meon;
13:18and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath;
13:19and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zareth-Shahar, on the mountain of the valley;
13:20and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth;
13:21and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck, together with the princes of Midian—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—princes of Sihon who inhabited the land.
13:22And the sons of Israel also put Balaam son of Beor, the diviner, to death with the sword among those they had slain.
13:23And the Jordan formed the border of the sons of Reuben. This was the inheritance of the sons of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.
13:24Then Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the sons of Gad according to their families.
13:25And their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, as far as Aroer, which faced Rabbah;
13:26and from Heshbon to Ramath-Mispeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;
13:27and in the valley, Beth-haram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon—the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon—with the Jordan and its border, as far as the end of the Sea of Chinnereth, beyond the Jordan eastward.
13:28This was the inheritance of the sons of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.
13:29Then Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh—to the half-tribe of the sons of Manasseh according to their families.
13:30And their territory was from Mahanaim: all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the villages of Jair which are in Bashan—sixty cities;
13:31and half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the sons of Machir son of Manasseh, for half of the sons of Machir according to their families.
13:32These are the inheritances Moses apportioned in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho.
13:33But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the LORD, God of Israel, Himself is their inheritance, as He had spoken to them.

Chapter 14

14:1And these are the inheritances which the sons of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the sons of Israel apportioned to them.
14:2Their inheritance was by lot, as the LORD commanded through Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe;
14:3for Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them.
14:4For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; and they gave no portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their possessions.
14:5As the LORD commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did; and they apportioned the land.
14:6Then the sons of Judah drew near to Joshua at Gilgal; and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know the word that the LORD spoke to Moses, the man of God, concerning me and concerning you at Kadesh-Barnea.
14:7I was forty years old when Moses, servant of the LORD, sent me from Kadesh-Barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him back word according to what was in my heart.
14:8But my brothers who went up with me caused the heart of the people to melt; yet I followed the LORD my God fully.
14:9And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your sons forever, because you have followed the LORD my God fully.’
14:10And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, as He spoke, these forty-five years, since the LORD spoke this word to Moses while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am eighty-five years old today.
14:11I am still as strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for battle and for going out and coming in.
14:12And now, give me this hill-country of which the LORD spoke on that day; for you heard on that day that the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD will be with me, and I shall dispossess them, as the LORD has spoken.”
14:13And Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.
14:14Therefore Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he followed the LORD, God of Israel, fully.
14:15Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba; Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. And the land had rest from war.

Chapter 15

15:1Then the lot for the tribe of the sons of Judah, according to their families, extended southward to the border of Edom, to the wilderness of Zin at the farthest south.
15:2And their south border began at the end of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward.
15:3And it went out southward to the ascent of Akrabbim, passed over to Zin, ascended south of Kadesh-Barnea, passed over to Hezron, ascended to Addar, and turned toward Karkaa;
15:4and it passed over to Azmon, went out at the Brook of Egypt, and the border ended at the sea. This shall be your south border.
15:5And the east border was the Salt Sea, as far as the mouth of the Jordan; and the border on the north side began at the bay of the sea, at the mouth of the Jordan.
15:6And the border ascended to Beth-hoglah, passed north of Beth-arabah, and ascended to the stone of Bohan son of Reuben.
15:7And the border ascended toward Debir from the Valley of Achor, and turned northward toward Gilgal, which was opposite the ascent of Adummim, on the south side of the brook; and the border passed over to the waters of En-Shemesh and ended at En-Rogel.
15:8And the border ascended by the Valley of the Son of Hinnom to the southern slope of the Jebusite city—it is Jerusalem; and the border ascended to the top of the hill which faced the Valley of Hinnom westward, at the northern end of the Valley of the Rephaim.
15:9And the border was marked out from the top of the hill to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, went out to the cities of Mount Ephron, and was marked out to Ba‘alah—it is Kiriath-jearim.
15:10And the border turned from Ba‘alah westward to Mount Seir, passed along the northern slope of Mount Jearim—it is Chesalon—went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed over to Timnah.
15:11And the border went out to the northern slope of Ekron; then the border was marked out to Shicron, passed over to Mount Ba‘alah, and went out to Jabneel; and the border ended at the sea.
15:12And the west border was the Great Sea and its coast. This was the border of the sons of Judah all around, according to their families.
15:13And to Caleb son of Jephunneh Joshua gave a portion among the sons of Judah, according to the command of the LORD: the city of Arba, father of Anak—it is Hebron.
15:14And Caleb dispossessed from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, descendants of Anak.
15:15Then he ascended from there against the inhabitants of Debir; and the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher.
15:16And Caleb said, “He who strikes Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him my daughter Achsah as a wife.”
15:17And Othniel son of Kenaz, brother of Caleb, captured it; and he gave him his daughter Achsah for a wife.
15:18And when she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field; and she dismounted from the donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?”
15:19And she said, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
15:20This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Judah, according to their families.
15:21And the cities at the farthest end of the tribe of the sons of Judah, toward the border of Edom in the Negev, were Kabzeel, Eder, and Jagur,
15:22and Kinah, and Dimonah, and Adadah,
15:23and Kedesh, and Hazor, and Ithnan,
15:24Ziph, and Telem, and Bealoth,
15:25and Hazor-Hadattah, and Kerioth-Hezron—it is Hazor,
15:26Amam, and Shema, and Moladah,
15:27and Hazar-Gaddah, and Heshmon, and Beth-Palet,
15:28and Hazar-Shual, and Beersheba, and Bizjothjah,
15:29Ba‘alah, and Iim, and Ezem,
15:30and Eltolad, and Chesil, and Hormah,
15:31and Ziklag, and Madmannah, and Sansannah,
15:32and Lebaoth, and Shilhim, and Ain, and Rimmon; twenty-nine cities in all, with their villages.
15:33In the lowland: Eshtaol, and Zorah, and Ashnah,
15:34and Zanoah, and En-Gannim, Tappuah, and Enam,
15:35Jarmuth, and Adullam, Socoh, and Azekah,
15:36and Shaaraim, and Adithaim, and Gederah, and Gederothaim; fourteen cities and their villages.
15:37Zenan, and Hadashah, and Migdal-Gad,
15:38and Dilean, and Mizpeh, and Joktheel,
15:39Lachish, and Bozkath, and Eglon,
15:40and Cabbon, and Lahmam, and Kithlish,
15:41and Gederoth, Beth-dagon, and Naamah, and Makkedah; sixteen cities and their villages.
15:42Libnah, and Ether, and Ashan,
15:43and Jiphtah, and Ashnah, and Nezib,
15:44and Keilah, and Achzib, and Mareshah; nine cities and their villages.
15:45Ekron, with its towns and its villages;
15:46from Ekron westward, all that were beside Ashdod, with their villages;
15:47Ashdod, with its towns and its villages; Gaza, with its towns and its villages; as far as the Brook of Egypt, and the Great Sea with its coast.
15:48And in the hill-country: Shamir, and Jattir, and Socoh,
15:49and Dannah, and Kiriath-sannah—it is Debir,
15:50and Anab, and Eshtemoh, and Anim,
15:51and Goshen, and Holon, and Giloh; eleven cities and their villages.
15:52Arab, and Dumah, and Eshan,
15:53and Janum, and Beth-tappuah, and Aphekah,
15:54and Humtah, and Kiriath-arba—it is Hebron—and Zior; nine cities and their villages.
15:55Maon, Carmel, and Ziph, and Juttah,
15:56and Jezreel, and Jokdeam, and Zanoah,
15:57Cain, Gibeah, and Timnah; ten cities and their villages.
15:58Halhul, Beth-zur, and Gedor,
15:59and Maarath, and Beth-anoth, and Eltekon; six cities and their villages.
15:60Kiriath-baal—it is Kiriath-jearim—and Rabbah; two cities and their villages.
15:61In the wilderness: Beth-arabah, Middin, and Secacah,
15:62and Nibshan, and the City of Salt, and En-Gedi; six cities and their villages.
15:63But the sons of Judah were not able to dispossess the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and the Jebusites dwell with the sons of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.

Chapter 16

16:1Then the lot for the sons of Joseph went out from the Jordan at Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho, into the wilderness that ascends from Jericho through the hill-country to Bethel.
16:2And it went out from Bethel to Luz, and passed over to the border of the Archites at Ataroth,
16:3and went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, as far as the border of lower Beth-horon, and to Gezer; and it ended at the sea.
16:4Thus the sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance.
16:5And the border of the sons of Ephraim, according to their families, was this: the border of their inheritance on the east was Atroth-Addar, as far as upper Beth-horon.
16:6And the border went out toward the sea, with Michmethah on the north; then the border turned eastward to Taanath-Shiloh, and passed by it eastward to Janoah;
16:7and it went down from Janoah to Ataroth and Naarah, touched Jericho, and went out at the Jordan.
16:8From Tappuah the border went westward to the Brook of Kanah and ended at the sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim according to their families,
16:9together with the cities set apart for the sons of Ephraim within the inheritance of the sons of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.
16:10But they did not dispossess the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; and the Canaanites dwell among Ephraim to this day as forced laborers.

Chapter 17

17:1Then the lot fell to the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. To Machir, firstborn of Manasseh and father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, Gilead and Bashan were given.
17:2And there was a lot for the remaining sons of Manasseh according to their families: for the sons of Abiezer, the sons of Helek, the sons of Asriel, the sons of Shechem, the sons of Hepher, and the sons of Shemida. These were the male descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph according to their families.
17:3But Zelophehad son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters; and these were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
17:4And they drew near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua son of Nun, and before the leaders, saying, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” So he gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, according to the command of the LORD.
17:5Thus ten portions fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were beyond the Jordan;
17:6for the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons, and the land of Gilead belonged to the remaining sons of Manasseh.
17:7And the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, which faced Shechem; then the border went southward to the inhabitants of En-Tappuah.
17:8The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah, on the border of Manasseh, belonged to the sons of Ephraim.
17:9And the border came down to the Brook of Kanah, south of the brook. These cities of Ephraim were among the cities of Manasseh; and the border of Manasseh was north of the brook and ended at the sea.
17:10The land southward belonged to Ephraim, and that northward to Manasseh, and the sea was their border; and they reached Asher on the north and Issachar on the east.
17:11And in Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Beth-shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, Endor and its towns, Taanach and its towns, and Megiddo and its towns—the three heights.
17:12But the sons of Manasseh were not able to take possession of these cities, and the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in this land.
17:13And when the sons of Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not dispossess them completely.
17:14Then the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me only one lot and one portion as an inheritance, since I am a numerous people whom the LORD has blessed until now?”
17:15And Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest and clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaim, since the hill-country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.”
17:16And the sons of Joseph said, “The hill-country is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites who dwell in the valley land have iron chariots, both those in Beth-shean and its towns and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”
17:17Then Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, “You are a numerous people and have great power. You shall not have only one lot,
17:18but the hill-country shall be yours. Though it is a forest, you shall clear it, and its farthest limits shall be yours; for you shall dispossess the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots and are strong.”

Chapter 18

18:1And all the congregation of the sons of Israel assembled at Shiloh and set up the Tent of Meeting there; and the land was subdued before them.
18:2And seven tribes remained among the sons of Israel which had not yet received their inheritance.
18:3Then Joshua said to the sons of Israel, “How long will you neglect to go in and possess the land which the LORD, God of your fathers, has given you?
18:4Provide three men from each tribe, and I will send them; and they shall rise and walk through the land, describe it according to their inheritance, and come to me.
18:5And they shall divide it into seven portions. Judah shall remain within its border on the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain within their border on the north.
18:6And you shall describe the land in seven portions and bring the description here to me; and I will cast a lot for you here before the LORD our God.
18:7For the Levites have no portion among you, because the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance. And Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan eastward, which Moses, servant of the LORD, gave them.”
18:8Then the men rose and went; and Joshua commanded those who were going to describe the land, saying, “Go, walk through the land, describe it, and return to me; and here I will cast a lot for you before the LORD in Shiloh.”
18:9And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities in seven portions in a book; and they came to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh.
18:10And Joshua cast a lot for them in Shiloh before the LORD; and there Joshua divided the land among the sons of Israel according to their tribal divisions.
18:11Then the lot came up for the tribe of the sons of Benjamin according to their families; and the territory of their lot lay between the sons of Judah and the sons of Joseph.
18:12And their border on the north side began at the Jordan; and the border ascended to the northern slope of Jericho, ascended through the hill-country westward, and ended at the wilderness of Beth-aven.
18:13And the border passed from there to Luz, to the southern slope of Luz—it is Bethel—and the border went down to Atroth-Addar, by the hill south of lower Beth-horon.
18:14And the border was marked out and turned southward on the west side, from the hill which faced Beth-horon southward; and it ended at Kiriath-baal—it is Kiriath-jearim—a city of the sons of Judah. This was the west side.
18:15And the south side began at the edge of Kiriath-jearim; and the border went out westward and came to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah.
18:16And the border came down to the end of the hill which faced the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which was at the northern end of the Valley of the Rephaim; and it went down the Valley of Hinnom to the southern slope of Jebus and went down to En-Rogel.
18:17And it was marked out northward and went out to En-Shemesh, then went out to Geliloth, which was opposite the ascent of Adummim, and went down to the stone of Bohan son of Reuben.
18:18And it passed along the northern slope facing the Arabah and went down to the Arabah.
18:19And the border passed along the northern slope of Beth-hoglah; and the border ended at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, at the southern end of the Jordan. This was the south border.
18:20And the Jordan bordered it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin, by its borders all around, according to their families.
18:21And the cities of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho, Beth-hoglah, and the Valley of Keziz,
18:22and Beth-arabah, Zemaraim, and Bethel,
18:23and Avvim, and Parah, and Ophrah,
18:24and Chephar-Haammonai, and Ophni, and Geba; twelve cities and their villages.
18:25Gibeon, and Ramah, and Beeroth,
18:26and Mizpeh, and Chephirah, and Mozah,
18:27and Rekem, and Irpeel, and Taralah,
18:28and Zelah, Haeleph, and Jebus—it is Jerusalem—Gibeah, and Kiriath; fourteen cities and their villages. This was the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin according to their families.

Chapter 19

19:1Then the second lot came out for Simeon, for the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families; and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the sons of Judah.
19:2And they had in their inheritance Beersheba, and Sheba, and Moladah,
19:3and Hazar-Shual, and Balah, and Ezem,
19:4and Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah,
19:5and Ziklag, and Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-Susah,
19:6and Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities and their villages.
19:7Ain, Remmon, and Ether, and Ashan; four cities and their villages;
19:8and all the villages which were around these cities as far as Ba‘alath-Beer, Ramath-negev. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families.
19:9The inheritance of the sons of Simeon was taken from the portion of the sons of Judah; for the portion of the sons of Judah was too large for them, so the sons of Simeon received an inheritance within their inheritance.
19:10Then the third lot came up for the sons of Zebulun according to their families; and the border of their inheritance extended as far as Sarid.
19:11And their border ascended westward to Maralah, touched Dabbesheth, and touched the brook which was east of Jokneam.
19:12And it turned from Sarid eastward, toward the sunrise, to the border of Chisloth-Tabor; and it went out to Daberath and ascended to Japhia.
19:13And from there it passed eastward, toward the sunrise, to Gath-Hepher, to Eth-Kazin, and went out to Rimmon, turning toward Neah.
19:14And the border turned around it on the north to Hannathon, and ended in the Valley of Jiphthah-El.
19:15And Kattath, and Nahalal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and Bethlehem; twelve cities and their villages.
19:16This was the inheritance of the sons of Zebulun according to their families, these cities and their villages.
19:17The fourth lot came out for Issachar, for the sons of Issachar according to their families.
19:18And their border was at Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem,
19:19and Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath,
19:20and Rabbith, and Kishion, and Ebez,
19:21and Remeth, and En-Gannim, and En-Haddah, and Beth-pazzez.
19:22And the border touched Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth-shemesh, and ended at the Jordan; sixteen cities and their villages.
19:23This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages.
19:24Then the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families.
19:25And their border was Helkath, and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph,
19:26and Alammelech, and Amad, and Mishal; and it touched Carmel westward and Shihor-Libnath.
19:27And it turned eastward to Beth-dagon, reached Zebulun and the Valley of Jiphthah-El northward, to Beth-emek and Neiel, and went out to Cabul on the north,
19:28and Ebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, as far as Great Sidon.
19:29And the border turned back to Ramah and to the fortified city of Tyre; then the border turned to Hosah and ended at the sea by the region of Achzib;
19:30and Ummah, and Aphek, and Rehob; twenty-two cities and their villages.
19:31This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families, these cities and their villages.
19:32The sixth lot went out for the sons of Naphtali, for the sons of Naphtali, according to their families.
19:33And their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim, and Adami-nekeb, and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum; and it ended at the Jordan.
19:34And the border turned westward to Aznoth-Tabor, went out from there to Hukkok, touched Zebulun on the south, touched Asher on the west, and Judah at the Jordan toward the east.
19:35And the fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth,
19:36and Adamah, and Ramah, and Hazor,
19:37and Kedesh, and Edrei, and En-Hazor,
19:38and Yiron, and Migdal-El, Horem, and Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities and their villages.
19:39This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali according to their families, the cities and their villages.
19:40The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families.
19:41And the territory of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Ir-Shemesh,
19:42and Shalabbin, and Aijalon, and Jethlah,
19:43and Elon, and Timnah, and Ekron,
19:44and Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Ba‘alath,
19:45and Jehud, and Bene-Barak, and Gath-rimmon,
19:46and Me-Jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border in front of Joppa.
19:47But the territory of the sons of Dan went beyond their grasp; so the sons of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, struck it by the edge of the sword, possessed it, and dwelt in it; and they called Leshem Dan, according to the name of Dan their father.
19:48This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families, these cities and their villages.
19:49And when they had finished apportioning the land as an inheritance by its borders, the sons of Israel gave an inheritance among them to Joshua son of Nun.
19:50By the command of the LORD they gave him the city he asked for, Timnath-Serah in the hill-country of Ephraim; and he built the city and dwelt in it.
19:51These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the sons of Israel apportioned by lot at Shiloh before the LORD, at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting. And they finished apportioning the land.

Chapter 20

20:1And the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,
20:2“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you by Moses,
20:3so that the manslayer who kills a person unintentionally, without premeditation, may flee there; and they shall be a refuge for you from the avenger of blood.
20:4And he shall flee to one of these cities, stand at the entrance of the city gate, and state his case in the hearing of the elders of that city. Then they shall take him into the city with them, give him a place, and he shall dwell among them.
20:5And if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not deliver the manslayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor unintentionally and had not hated him previously.
20:6And he shall dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest who is in office in those days. Then the manslayer may return and come to his own city and his own house, to the city from which he fled.”
20:7And they set apart Kedesh in Galilee, in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba—that is, Hebron—in the hill-country of Judah.
20:8And beyond the Jordan, eastward from Jericho, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau, from the tribe of Reuben; Ramoth-gilead, from the tribe of Gad; and Golan in Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh.
20:9These were the appointed cities for all the sons of Israel and for the sojourner who sojourned among them, so that anyone who killed a person unintentionally might flee there and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood until he stood before the congregation.

Chapter 21

21:1Then the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites drew near to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the sons of Israel.
21:2And they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “The LORD commanded by Moses that cities be given to us to dwell in, with their pastures for our livestock.”
21:3So the sons of Israel gave to the Levites, out of their inheritance, at the command of the LORD, these cities with their pastures.
21:4And the lot fell to the families of the Kohathites; and thirteen cities by lot came to the sons of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, from the tribe of Judah, the tribe of Simeon, and the tribe of Benjamin.
21:5And the remaining sons of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, the tribe of Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
21:6And the sons of Gershon received thirteen cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Issachar, the tribe of Asher, the tribe of Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
21:7The sons of Merari, according to their families, received twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad, and the tribe of Zebulun.
21:8Thus the sons of Israel gave these cities with their pastures to the Levites by lot, as the LORD had commanded by Moses.
21:9And from the tribe of the sons of Judah and from the tribe of the sons of Simeon they gave these cities named here.
21:10These fell to the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites, of the sons of Levi; for theirs was the first lot.
21:11And they gave them the city of Arba, father of Anak—that is, Hebron—in the hill-country of Judah, with its pastures around it.
21:12But the field of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
21:13And to the sons of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pastures; Libnah with its pastures;
21:14Jattir with its pastures; Eshtemoa with its pastures;
21:15Holon with its pastures; Debir with its pastures;
21:16Ain with its pastures; Juttah with its pastures; and Beth-shemesh with its pastures—nine cities from these two tribes.
21:17And from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pastures; Geba with its pastures;
21:18Anathoth with its pastures; and Almon with its pastures—four cities.
21:19All the cities of the sons of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their pastures.
21:20And for the families of the remaining sons of Kohath, the Levites, the cities of their lot came from the tribe of Ephraim.
21:21They gave them Shechem, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pastures in the hill-country of Ephraim; Gezer with its pastures;
21:22Kibzaim with its pastures; and Beth-horon with its pastures—four cities.
21:23And from the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with its pastures; Gibbethon with its pastures;
21:24Aijalon with its pastures; and Gath-rimmon with its pastures—four cities.
21:25And from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its pastures and Gath-rimmon with its pastures—two cities.
21:26All the cities, with their pastures, for the families of the remaining sons of Kohath were ten.
21:27And to the sons of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, from the half-tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pastures, and Beeshterah with its pastures—two cities.
21:28And from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its pastures; Daberath with its pastures;
21:29Jarmuth with its pastures; and En-Gannim with its pastures—four cities.
21:30And from the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its pastures; Abdon with its pastures;
21:31Helkath with its pastures; and Rehob with its pastures—four cities.
21:32And from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pastures; Hammoth-Dor with its pastures; and Kartan with its pastures—three cities.
21:33All the cities of the Gershonites, according to their families, were thirteen cities with their pastures.
21:34And to the families of the remaining sons of Merari, the Levites, from the tribe of Zebulun they gave Jokneam with its pastures; Kartah with its pastures;
21:35Dimnah with its pastures; and Nahalal with its pastures—four cities.
21:36And from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with its pastures; Jahaz with its pastures;
21:37Kedemoth with its pastures; and Mephaath with its pastures—four cities.
21:38And from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth-gilead, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pastures; Mahanaim with its pastures;
21:39Heshbon with its pastures; and Jazer with its pastures—four cities in all.
21:40All the cities allotted to the sons of Merari, according to their families, the remaining families of the Levites, were twelve cities.
21:41All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the sons of Israel were forty-eight cities with their pastures.
21:42Each of these cities had its pastures around it; so it was with all these cities.
21:43And the LORD gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers; and they possessed it and dwelt in it.
21:44And the LORD gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers; and not one of all their enemies stood before them. The LORD gave all their enemies into their hand.
21:45Not one word failed of all the good words which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.

Chapter 22

22:1Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,
22:2and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses, servant of the LORD, commanded you, and you have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you.
22:3You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, to this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.
22:4And now the LORD your God has given rest to your brothers, as He spoke to them. So now return and go to your tents, to the land of your possession which Moses, servant of the LORD, gave you beyond the Jordan.
22:5Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the Law which Moses, servant of the LORD, commanded you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to cling to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
22:6And Joshua blessed them and sent them away; and they went to their tents.
22:7Now to one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given an inheritance in Bashan, and to the other half Joshua gave an inheritance with their brothers beyond the Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,
22:8and said to them, “Return to your tents with great riches, with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and very much clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.”
22:9Then the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned and departed from the sons of Israel at Shiloh, which was in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, the land of their possession which they had received according to the command of the LORD by Moses.
22:10And when they came to the region of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan—an altar great in appearance.
22:11And the sons of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region of the Jordan, on the side belonging to the sons of Israel.”
22:12And when the sons of Israel heard this, all the congregation of the sons of Israel gathered at Shiloh to go up against them in war.
22:13Then the sons of Israel sent Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest to the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead,
22:14and with him ten leaders, one leader from each father’s house of all the tribes of Israel; and each was head of his father’s house among the thousands of Israel.
22:15And they came to the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead, and spoke with them, saying,
22:16“Thus says all the congregation of the LORD: What is this unfaithful act which you have committed against the God of Israel, turning away today from following the LORD by building an altar for yourselves, rebelling today against the LORD?
22:17Was the iniquity of Peor not enough for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, though the plague came upon the congregation of the LORD,
22:18that you must turn away today from following the LORD? And if you rebel against the LORD today, tomorrow He will be angry with all the congregation of Israel.
22:19But if the land of your possession is unclean, cross over to the land of the LORD’s possession, where the Dwelling Place of the LORD dwells, and take possession among us. Only do not rebel against the LORD or against us by building an altar for yourselves apart from the altar of the LORD our God.
22:20Did not Achan son of Zerah act unfaithfully concerning what was devoted to destruction, so that wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he was not the only one who died for his iniquity.”
22:21Then the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel:
22:22“The Mighty One, God, the LORD! The Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows, and may Israel know: if it was in rebellion or in unfaithfulness against the LORD, may He not save us this day.
22:23If we have built an altar for ourselves to turn away from following the LORD, or to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to offer sacrifices of peace offerings on it, may the LORD Himself require it.
22:24But truly, we have done this out of concern, saying, In time to come your sons may say to our sons, What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
22:25For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you, O sons of Reuben and sons of Gad; you have no portion in the LORD. Thus your sons might make our sons cease from fearing the LORD.
22:26Therefore we said, Let us now build an altar for ourselves—not for burnt offering or sacrifice—
22:27but as a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may perform the service of the LORD before Him with our burnt offerings, our sacrifices, and our peace offerings; so that your sons may not say to our sons in time to come, You have no portion in the LORD.
22:28And we said, If they say this to us or to our generations in time to come, then we shall say, See the replica of the altar of the LORD which our fathers made—not for burnt offering or sacrifice, but as a witness between us and you.
22:29Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD and turn away today from following the LORD by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, apart from the altar of the LORD our God which is before His Dwelling Place.”
22:30And when Phinehas the priest, the leaders of the congregation, and the heads of the thousands of Israel who were with him heard the words which the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the sons of Manasseh spoke, it was good in their sight.
22:31And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the sons of Manasseh, “Today we know that the LORD is among us, because you have not acted unfaithfully against the LORD. Now you have delivered the sons of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.”
22:32Then Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders returned from the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad in the land of Gilead to the sons of Israel in the land of Canaan, and brought back word to them.
22:33And the word was good in the sight of the sons of Israel; and the sons of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of going up against them in war to destroy the land in which the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad dwelt.
22:34And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad called the altar Witness, saying, “For it is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”

Chapter 23

23:1And it came to pass, many days after the LORD had given rest to Israel from all their enemies around them, that Joshua was old, advanced in days.
23:2And Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders, their heads, their judges, and their officers, and said to them, “I am old; I am advanced in days.
23:3And you have seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is He who has fought for you.
23:4See, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes these nations that remain, along with all the nations I cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun.
23:5And the LORD your God, He will thrust them out from before you and dispossess them from before you; and you shall possess their land, as the LORD your God has spoken to you.
23:6Therefore be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, so as not to turn aside from it to the right or to the left;
23:7so that you do not associate with these nations, those remaining among you. You shall not make mention of the name of their gods, nor swear by them, nor serve them, nor bow yourselves to them.
23:8But you shall cling to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.
23:9For the LORD has dispossessed great and mighty nations from before you; and as for you, no man has stood before you to this day.
23:10One man of you pursues a thousand, for the LORD your God is He who fights for you, as He has spoken to you.
23:11So take great care for your souls, to love the LORD your God.
23:12But if you turn back at all and cling to the remnant of these nations, those remaining among you, and intermarry with them, and go in to them, and they to you,
23:13then know certainly that the LORD your God will no longer dispossess these nations from before you; and they shall be a trap and a snare to you, scourges on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the LORD your God has given you.
23:14And behold, I am going today in the way of all the earth; and you know with all your heart and with all your soul that not one word has failed of all the good words which the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.
23:15And it shall be, just as every good word which the LORD your God spoke to you has come upon you, so the LORD will bring upon you every evil word until He destroys you from this good land which the LORD your God has given you.
23:16When you violate the covenant of the LORD your God which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow yourselves to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you shall perish quickly from the good land which He has given you.”

Chapter 24

24:1Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, their heads, their judges, and their officers; and they stationed themselves before God.
24:2And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Beyond the Euphrates your fathers dwelt of old—Terah, father of Abraham and father of Nahor—and they served other gods.
24:3Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and caused him to go through all the land of Canaan; and I multiplied his seed and gave him Isaac.
24:4And to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau; and to Esau I gave Mount Seir to possess, but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
24:5Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and struck Egypt with plagues, as I did in its midst; and afterward I brought you out.
24:6And I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Sea of Reeds.
24:7Then they cried to the LORD, and He put thick darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them and covered them. And your eyes saw what I did in Egypt; and you dwelt in the wilderness many days.
24:8And I brought you into the land of the Amorites who dwelt beyond the Jordan; and they fought against you, and I gave them into your hand. You possessed their land, and I destroyed them from before you.
24:9Then Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel, and sent and called for Balaam son of Beor to curse you.
24:10But I was not willing to listen to Balaam; and he blessed you repeatedly, and I delivered you out of his hand.
24:11Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho; and the men of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I gave them into your hand.
24:12And I sent the hornet before you, and it drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites—not by your sword or by your bow.
24:13And I gave you a land for which you had not labored, and cities which you had not built, and you dwelt in them; you eat from vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.
24:14And now, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
24:15And if it is evil in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are dwelling. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
24:16Then the people answered and said, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods.
24:17For the LORD our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did these great signs in our sight, and kept us all along the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through whose midst we passed.
24:18And the LORD drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites dwelling in the land. We also will serve the LORD, for He is our God.”
24:19Then Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD, for He is a holy God; He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your transgression or your sins.
24:20If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you, after He has done good to you.”
24:21Then the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the LORD.”
24:22And Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD for yourselves, to serve Him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.”
24:23“And now, put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel.”
24:24And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God, and we will listen to His voice.”
24:25Then Joshua made a covenant with the people on that day, and set a statute and an ordinance for them at Shechem.
24:26And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God; and he took a great stone and raised it up there under the oak which was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
24:27And Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the LORD which He spoke to us; and it shall be a witness against you, lest you deny your God.”
24:28And Joshua sent the people away, each to his inheritance.
24:29And it came to pass after these things that Joshua son of Nun, servant of the LORD, died, one hundred and ten years old.
24:30And they buried him within the border of his inheritance at Timnath-Serah, which was in the hill-country of Ephraim, north of the hill of Gaash.
24:31And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and who had known all the work of the LORD which He had done for Israel.
24:32And the bones of Joseph, which the sons of Israel brought up out of Egypt, they buried at Shechem, in the portion of land which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of silver; and it became an inheritance of the sons of Joseph.
24:33And Eleazar son of Aaron died, and they buried him at the hill of Phinehas his son, which had been given to him in the hill-country of Ephraim.
