Chapter 1

1:1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1:2He was in the beginning with God.
1:3All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not one thing came into being that has come into being.
1:4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
1:5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.
1:6There came a man sent from God, whose name was John.
1:7He came as a witness, that he might testify concerning the Light, so that all might believe through him.
1:8He was not the Light, but came that he might testify concerning the Light.
1:9The true Light, which enlightens every man, was coming into the world.
1:10He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, yet the world did not know Him.
1:11He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
1:12But as many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become children of God—to those who believe in His Name,
1:13who were begotten, not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
1:14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
1:15John testifies concerning Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has come before me, for He was before me.’”
1:16And from His fullness we all received, and grace upon grace.
1:17For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus the Anointed One.
1:18No one has ever seen God; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has made Him known.
1:19And this was the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to question him, “Who are you?”
1:20And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Anointed One.”
1:21And they questioned him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
1:22Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say concerning yourself?”
1:23He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
1:24And those who had been sent were of the Pharisees.
1:25And they questioned him and said to him, “Why, then, do you immerse, if you are not the Anointed One, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
1:26John answered them, saying, “I immerse in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
1:27He is the One who comes after me, who has come before me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
1:28These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was immersing.
1:29On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
1:30This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has come before me, for He was before me.’
1:31And I did not know Him, but that He might be revealed to Israel, for this reason I came immersing in water.”
1:32And John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending out of Heaven as a dove, and He remained upon Him.
1:33And I did not know Him; but He who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘Upon whomever you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is He who immerses in the Holy Spirit.’
1:34And I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”
1:35On the next day John was standing again, with two of his disciples.
1:36And looking upon Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
1:37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
1:38And Jesus, turning and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to Him, “Teacher”—which is the meaning of the title—“where are You staying?”
1:39He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the tenth hour.
1:40Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Him.
1:41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Anointed One”—which is the meaning of the title.
1:42And he brought him to Jesus. Looking upon him, Jesus said, “You are Simon son of Jonas; you shall be called Cephas,” which is interpreted, “A rock.”
1:43On the next day He desired to go forth into Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”
1:44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
1:45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and the Prophets: Jesus son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth.”
1:46And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
1:47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said concerning him, “Behold, truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
1:48Nathanael said to Him, “From where do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
1:49Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Teacher, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”
1:50Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ you believe. You will see greater things than these.”
1:51And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, from now on you will see Heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Chapter 2

2:1And on the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
2:2Jesus also was invited, with His disciples, to the wedding.
2:3And when the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
2:4Jesus said to her, “What is this to Me and to you, woman? My hour has not yet come.”
2:5His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
2:6Now six stone water jars were set there for the purification of the Jews, holding about twenty or thirty gallons each.
2:7Jesus said to them, “Fill the water jars with water.” And they filled them to the brim.
2:8And He said to them, “Draw some out now and carry it to the master of the feast.” And they carried it.
2:9When the master of the feast tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew—the master of the feast called the bridegroom
2:10and said to him, “Every man sets out the good wine first, and when the guests have drunk freely, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now.”
2:11Jesus did this beginning of the signs in Cana of Galilee; He revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
2:12After this He went down to Capernaum—He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples—and they remained there not many days.
2:13And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2:14And He found in the temple those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, and the money changers sitting there.
2:15And after making a whip of small cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned their tables.
2:16And He said to those who sold the doves, “Take these things away from here. Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise.”
2:17And His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.”
2:18The Jews then answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show us, seeing that You do these things?”
2:19Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
2:20The Jews therefore said, “This temple was built in forty-six years, and will You raise it up in three days?”
2:21But He spoke concerning the temple of His body.
2:22When, therefore, He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
2:23And while He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His Name, beholding the signs that He was doing.
2:24But Jesus Himself did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all men,
2:25and because He had no need that anyone should testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.

Chapter 3

3:1Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
3:2He came to Him by night and said to Him, “Teacher, we know that You have come from God as a teacher, for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
3:3Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless anyone is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
3:4Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born?”
3:5Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless anyone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
3:6That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit.
3:7Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’
3:8The wind blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”
3:9Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things come to pass?”
3:10Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not know these things?
3:11Truly, truly, I say to you, what We know We speak, and what We have seen We testify; yet you do not receive Our testimony.
3:12If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
3:13And no one has ascended into Heaven except He who descended from Heaven—the Son of Man who is in Heaven.
3:14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,
3:15that everyone who believes in Him may not perish, but may have eternal life.
3:16For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone who believes in Him may not perish, but may have eternal life.
3:17For God did not send His Son into the world that He might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
3:18He who believes in Him is not judged; but he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the Name of the only begotten Son of God.
3:19And this is the judgment: that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil.
3:20For everyone who practices wickedness hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works be exposed.
3:21But he who does the truth comes to the light, that it may be revealed that his works have been done in God.”
3:22After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with them and was immersing.
3:23And John also was immersing in Aenon, near Salem, because there was much water there; and they were coming and being immersed—
3:24for John had not yet been put into prison.
3:25Then a question arose between the disciples of John and some Jews concerning purification.
3:26And they came to John and said to him, “Teacher, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you testified—behold, He is immersing, and all are coming to Him.”
3:27John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from Heaven.
3:28You yourselves testify for me that I said, ‘I am not the Anointed One,’ but that I have been sent before Him.
3:29He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This joy of mine, therefore, has been fulfilled.
3:30He must increase, but I must decrease.
3:31He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth is of the earth and speaks from the earth. He who comes from Heaven is above all.
3:32And what He has seen and heard, this He testifies; yet no one receives His testimony.
3:33He who receives His testimony has set his seal that God is true.
3:34For He whom God sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.
3:35The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.
3:36He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who refuses to obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.”

Chapter 4

4:1When, therefore, the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and immersing more disciples than John—
4:2though Jesus Himself was not immersing, but His disciples—
4:3He left Judea and went away again into Galilee.
4:4And it was necessary for Him to pass through Samaria.
4:5He came, therefore, to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
4:6And Jacob’s well was there. Jesus, therefore, being wearied from the journey, sat by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
4:7A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
4:8For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
4:9The Samaritan woman therefore said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
4:10Jesus answered and said to her, “If you had known the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
4:11The woman said to Him, “Lord, You have no vessel to draw with, and the well is deep. From where, then, do You have the living water?
4:12Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, with his sons and his livestock?”
4:13Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;
4:14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst. The water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life.”
4:15The woman said to Him, “Lord, give me this water, that I may not thirst or come here to draw.”
4:16Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
4:17The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have said well, ‘I have no husband’;
4:18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband. This you have said truly.”
4:19The woman said to Him, “Lord, I perceive that You are a prophet.
4:20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.”
4:21Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
4:22You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews.
4:23But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also seeks such to worship Him.
4:24God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
4:25The woman said to Him, “I know that the One called the Anointed One is coming. When He comes, He will tell us all things.”
4:26Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
4:27And at this His disciples came, and they marveled that He was speaking with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?”
4:28The woman then left her water jar and went away into the city, and said to the men,
4:29“Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Is this the Anointed One?”
4:30They went out of the city and were coming to Him.
4:31In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Teacher, eat.”
4:32But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know.”
4:33The disciples therefore said to one another, “Did anyone bring Him something to eat?”
4:34Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
4:35Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, for they are already white for harvest.
4:36And he who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit into eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
4:37For in this the saying is true: ‘One is the sower, and another the reaper.’
4:38I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
4:39And many of the Samaritans from that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me all things that I ever did.”
4:40When, therefore, the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to remain with them; and He stayed there two days.
4:41And many more believed because of His word.
4:42And they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your speaking, for we ourselves have heard and know that this is truly the Savior of the world—the Anointed One.”
4:43And after the two days He went forth from there and went into Galilee.
4:44For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
4:45When, therefore, He came into Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also had gone to the feast.
4:46Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum.
4:47When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and asked Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.
4:48Jesus then said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”
4:49The royal official said to Him, “Lord, come down before my child dies.”
4:50Jesus said to him, “Go; your son lives.” And the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.
4:51And as he was now going down, his slaves met him and told him, saying, “Your child lives.”
4:52He therefore inquired of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
4:53Then the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole house.
4:54This again was a second sign Jesus did, after coming out of Judea into Galilee.

Chapter 5

5:1After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
5:2Now in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, there was a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew, having five colonnades.
5:3In these lay a great multitude of the sick—blind, lame, and withered—waiting for the moving of the water.
5:4For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then the first one to enter after the stirring of the water was made whole from whatever disease held him.
5:5And a certain man was there who had been in his ailment thirty-eight years.
5:6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you desire to be made whole?”
5:7The sick man answered Him, “Lord, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred; and while I am coming, another goes down before me.”
5:8Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your pallet, and walk.”
5:9And immediately the man was made whole, and he took up his pallet and walked. Now that day was a Sabbath.
5:10The Jews therefore said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to take up the pallet.”
5:11He answered them, “He who made me whole said to me, ‘Take up your pallet and walk.’”
5:12Then they questioned him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your pallet and walk’?”
5:13But the man who had been healed did not know who He was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in that place.
5:14After these things Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have been made whole. Sin no more, lest something worse happen to you.”
5:15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole.
5:16And because of this the Jews were persecuting Jesus and seeking to kill Him, because He was doing these things on a Sabbath.
5:17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
5:18Because of this, therefore, the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also called God His own Father, making Himself equal to God.
5:19Jesus therefore answered and said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself unless He sees the Father doing it; for whatever He does, the Son also does likewise.
5:20For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
5:21For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wills.
5:22For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,
5:23that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
5:24Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
5:25Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
5:26For as the Father has life in Himself, so He also gave to the Son to have life in Himself,
5:27and He gave Him authority also to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
5:28Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice
5:29and will come forth—those who have done good, to a resurrection of life, and those who have practiced evil, to a resurrection of judgment.
5:30I can do nothing of Myself. As I hear, I judge, and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of the Father who sent Me.
5:31If I testify concerning Myself, My testimony is not true.
5:32There is another who testifies concerning Me, and I know that the testimony He testifies concerning Me is true.
5:33You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
5:34But I do not receive testimony from man; rather, I say these things that you may be saved.
5:35He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for an hour to rejoice in his light.
5:36But I have testimony greater than John’s, for the works that the Father gave Me to finish—the works themselves that I do—testify concerning Me that the Father has sent Me.
5:37And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified concerning Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.
5:38And you do not have His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He sent.
5:39You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they that testify concerning Me.
5:40Yet you are not willing to come to Me, that you may have life.
5:41I do not receive glory from men.
5:42But I know you: you do not have the love of God in yourselves.
5:43I have come in My Father’s Name, and you do not receive Me. If another comes in his own name, him you will receive.
5:44How can you believe, receiving glory from one another, while you do not seek the glory that comes from God alone?
5:45Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, in whom you have hoped.
5:46For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote concerning Me.
5:47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Chapter 6

6:1After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.
6:2And a great crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs He was doing upon the sick.
6:3And Jesus went up on the mountain and sat there with His disciples.
6:4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
6:5Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and saw that a great crowd was coming to Him, and He said to Philip, “From where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?”
6:6But He said this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was about to do.
6:7Philip answered Him, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of bread would not be enough for them, that each might receive a little.”
6:8One of His disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him,
6:9“There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish; but what are these among so many?”
6:10And Jesus said, “Make the men sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.
6:11And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks, He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those reclining; likewise also of the small fish, as much as they desired.
6:12And when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather the broken pieces that remain, that nothing may be lost.”
6:13So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves that remained to those who had eaten.
6:14When, therefore, the men saw the sign that Jesus had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is coming into the world.”
6:15Jesus, therefore, knowing that they were about to come and seize Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
6:16And when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
6:17and after entering the boat, they began crossing the sea toward Capernaum. Darkness had already come, and Jesus had not come to them.
6:18And the sea was rising because a great wind was blowing.
6:19When, therefore, they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat, and they were afraid.
6:20But He said to them, “I AM; do not be afraid.”
6:21Then they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to the land toward which they were going.
6:22On the next day, the crowd standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there except the one into which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone.
6:23Yet other small boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
6:24When, therefore, the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also entered the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
6:25And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Teacher, when did You come here?”
6:26Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
6:27Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you; for God the Father has sealed Him.”
6:28They said, therefore, to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
6:29Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God: that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
6:30They said, therefore, to Him, “What sign, then, do You do, that we may see and believe You? What work do You perform?
6:31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from Heaven to eat.’”
6:32Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from Heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from Heaven.
6:33For the bread of God is He who comes down from Heaven and gives life to the world.”
6:34They said, therefore, to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
6:35And Jesus said to them, “I AM the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
6:36But I said to you that you also have seen Me, and yet do not believe.
6:37All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and him who comes to Me I will never cast out.
6:38For I have come down from Heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
6:39And this is the will of the Father who sent Me: that of all He has given Me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up on the last day.
6:40And this is the will of Him who sent Me: that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
6:41The Jews, therefore, murmured against Him, because He said, “I AM the bread that came down from Heaven.”
6:42And they said, “Is this not Jesus, the Son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How, then, does He say, ‘I have come down from Heaven’?”
6:43Jesus answered, therefore, and said to them, “Do not murmur among yourselves.
6:44No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
6:45It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone, therefore, who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.
6:46Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.
6:47Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has eternal life.
6:48I AM the bread of life.
6:49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
6:50This is the bread that comes down from Heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die.
6:51I AM the living bread that came down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
6:52The Jews, therefore, quarreled with one another, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”
6:53Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.
6:54He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
6:55For My flesh is truly food, and My blood is truly drink.
6:56He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.
6:57As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.
6:58This is the bread that came down from Heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.”
6:59He said these things in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum.
6:60Many, therefore, of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This word is hard; who can hear it?”
6:61But Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were murmuring about this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?
6:62What, then, if you behold the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?
6:63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
6:64But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was who would deliver Him up.
6:65And He said, “For this reason I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
6:66From that time many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him.
6:67Jesus, therefore, said to the Twelve, “Do you also desire to go away?”
6:68Simon Peter, therefore, answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
6:69And we have believed and have known that You are the Anointed One, the Son of the living God.”
6:70Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And one of you is a devil.”
6:71Now He spoke of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, for he was about to deliver Him up, being one of the Twelve.

Chapter 7

7:1And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee, for He did not desire to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
7:2Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.
7:3His brothers, therefore, said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may behold the works You do.
7:4For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, reveal Yourself to the world.”
7:5For not even His brothers believed in Him.
7:6Jesus, therefore, said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready.
7:7The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil.
7:8You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because My time has not yet been fulfilled.”
7:9And having said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.
7:10But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as in secret.
7:11The Jews, therefore, were seeking Him at the feast and said, “Where is He?”
7:12And there was much murmuring concerning Him among the crowds. Some said, “He is good”; but others said, “No, rather, He leads the crowd astray.”
7:13Yet no one spoke openly concerning Him, for fear of the Jews.
7:14Now when the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
7:15And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man have such learning, having never studied?”
7:16Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.
7:17If anyone wills to do His will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from Myself.
7:18He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of Him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
7:19Did not Moses give you the Law? Yet none of you keeps the Law. Why do you seek to kill Me?”
7:20The crowd answered and said, “You have a demon. Who seeks to kill You?”
7:21Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel.
7:22For this reason Moses gave you circumcision—not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers—and on a Sabbath you circumcise a man.
7:23If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath, that the Law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man entirely whole on a Sabbath?
7:24Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
7:25Some of those from Jerusalem, therefore, said, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill?
7:26And behold, He speaks openly, and they say nothing to Him. Have the rulers truly known that this is the Anointed One?
7:27Yet we know where this Man is from; but when the Anointed One comes, no one knows where He is from.”
7:28Jesus, therefore, cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know Me and know where I am from; yet I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.
7:29But I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”
7:30They sought, therefore, to seize Him, yet no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
7:31And many from the crowd believed in Him and said, “When the Anointed One comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”
7:32The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to seize Him.
7:33Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Yet a little while I am with you, and then I go to Him who sent Me.
7:34You will seek Me and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
7:35The Jews, therefore, said among themselves, “Where is this Man about to go that we will not find Him? Is He about to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
7:36What is this word that He said, ‘You will seek Me and will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
7:37Now on the last and great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
7:38He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his inward parts will flow rivers of living water.”
7:39But this He said concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him were about to receive; for the Holy Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
7:40Many, therefore, from the crowd, when they heard this word, said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
7:41Others said, “This is the Anointed One.” But others said, “Does the Anointed One, then, come out of Galilee?
7:42Has not the Scripture said that the Anointed One comes from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”
7:43So a division arose among the crowd because of Him.
7:44And some of them desired to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
7:45The officers, therefore, came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”
7:46The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken like this Man.”
7:47The Pharisees, therefore, answered them, “Have you also been led astray?
7:48Has anyone of the rulers believed in Him, or of the Pharisees?
7:49But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed.”
7:50Nicodemus, he who came to Him by night, being one of them, said to them,
7:51“Does our Law judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing?”
7:52They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”
7:53And each one went to his own house, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

Chapter 8

8:1And at dawn He came again into the temple courts.
8:2And all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them.
8:3And the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been taken in adultery, and they set her in the midst.
8:4They said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was taken in the very act of committing adultery.
8:5Now in the Law Moses commanded us that such women should be stoned. What, then, do You say?”
8:6But they said this to test Him, that they might have grounds to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote with His finger on the ground.
8:7And as they continued questioning Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.”
8:8And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
8:9And when they heard this, being convicted by conscience, they went out one by one, beginning with the elders even to the last; and Jesus was left alone, with the woman standing in the midst.
8:10And Jesus raised Himself up and, seeing no one but the woman, said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Did no one condemn you?”
8:11And she said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more.”
8:12Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I AM the light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
8:13The Pharisees, therefore, said to Him, “You testify concerning Yourself; Your testimony is not true.”
8:14Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I testify concerning Myself, My testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
8:15You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
8:16Yet even if I judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me.
8:17And it is also written in your Law that the testimony of two men is true.
8:18I am One who testifies concerning Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies concerning Me.”
8:19They said, therefore, to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”
8:20Jesus spoke these words in the treasury while teaching in the temple, and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
8:21Jesus, therefore, said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
8:22The Jews, therefore, said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
8:23And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
8:24Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.”
8:25They said, therefore, to Him, “Who are You?” And Jesus said to them, “Even what I have told you from the beginning.
8:26I have many things to say concerning you and to judge; but He who sent Me is true, and the things I heard from Him, these I say to the world.”
8:27They did not know that He was speaking to them concerning the Father.
8:28Jesus, therefore, said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, these things I speak.
8:29And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, because I always do the things pleasing to Him.”
8:30As He spoke these things, many believed in Him.
8:31Jesus, therefore, said to the Jews who believed in Him, “If you remain in My word, you are truly My disciples.
8:32And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
8:33They answered Him, “We are the seed of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How do You say, ‘You will become free’?”
8:34Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
8:35And the slave does not remain in the house forever; the Son remains forever.
8:36Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
8:37I know that you are the seed of Abraham; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
8:38I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you, therefore, do what you have seen with your father.”
8:39They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham.
8:40But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has spoken to you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.
8:41You do the works of your father.” They said, therefore, to Him, “We were not born of sexual immorality; we have one Father—God.”
8:42Jesus, therefore, said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came forth from God and have come; neither have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.
8:43Why do you not understand My speech? Because you cannot hear My word.
8:44You are of your father the Devil, and you desire to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and did not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks falsehood, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of falsehood.
8:45But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.
8:46Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?
8:47He who is of God hears the words of God. For this reason you do not hear: because you are not of God.”
8:48The Jews, therefore, answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”
8:49Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; rather, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
8:50Yet I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks and judges.
8:51Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”
8:52The Jews, therefore, said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; yet You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste death.’
8:53Are You greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died. Whom do You make Yourself?”
8:54Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say that He is your God.
8:55Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I said, ‘I do not know Him,’ I would be a liar like you. But I know Him and keep His word.
8:56Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day; and he saw it and was glad.”
8:57The Jews, therefore, said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
8:58Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham came into being—I AM.”
8:59They took up stones, therefore, to cast at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

Chapter 9

9:1And as He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.
9:2And His disciples questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
9:3Jesus answered, “Neither this man sinned nor his parents; but this happened so that the works of God might be revealed in him.
9:4I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night comes when no one can work.
9:5While I am in the world, I AM the light of the world.”
9:6Having said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay from the spittle, and He spread the clay over the eyes of the blind man and said to him,
9:7“Go, wash in the pool of Siloam,” which is interpreted, “Sent.” He went away, therefore, and washed, and came back seeing.
9:8The neighbors, therefore, and those who had seen him before as a blind man said, “Is this not he who sat and begged?”
9:9Some said, “This is he.” Others said, “He is like him.” But he himself said, “I am he.”
9:10They said, therefore, to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
9:11He answered and said, “A Man called Jesus made clay and spread it over my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ And when I had gone and washed, I received sight.”
9:12Then they said to him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”
9:13They brought him who once was blind to the Pharisees.
9:14Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
9:15Again, therefore, the Pharisees also questioned him how he had received sight. And he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
9:16Some of the Pharisees, therefore, said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them.
9:17They said to the blind man again, “What do you say concerning Him, since He opened your eyes?”
9:18And he said, “He is a prophet.” The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of him who had received sight.
9:19And they questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How, then, does he now see?”
9:20His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind.
9:21But how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. He is of age; question him. He will speak for himself.”
9:22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him as the Anointed One, he would be put out of the synagogue.
9:23For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; question him.”
9:24They called, therefore, a second time the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this Man is a sinner.”
9:25He answered, therefore, and said, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I know: though I was blind, now I see.”
9:26And they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
9:27He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not hear. Why do you desire to hear it again? Do you also desire to become His disciples?”
9:28Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples.
9:29We know that God has spoken to Moses; but as for this Man, we do not know where He is from.”
9:30The man answered and said to them, “Why, this is a marvelous thing: that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
9:31Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.
9:32Since the age began, it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of one born blind.
9:33If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”
9:34They answered and said to him, “You were born altogether in sins, and do you teach us?” And they cast him out.
9:35Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and finding him, He said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”
9:36He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”
9:37And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and He who speaks with you is He.”
9:38And he said, “I believe, Lord,” and worshiped Him.
9:39And Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.”
9:40And some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “Are we also blind?”
9:41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.”

Chapter 10

10:1“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold through the door, but climbs up another way, is a thief and a robber.
10:2But he who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
10:3To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
10:4And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.
10:5But they will never follow a stranger; rather, they will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”
10:6Jesus spoke this figure of speech to them, but they did not understand what He was saying to them.
10:7Jesus, therefore, said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I AM the door of the sheep.
10:8All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.
10:9I AM the door. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved; and he will go in and go out and find pasture.
10:10The thief does not come except to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.
10:11I AM the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
10:12But the hired worker, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the sheep.
10:13The hired worker flees because he is a hired worker and does not care for the sheep.
10:14I AM the good shepherd, and I know My own, and My own know Me,
10:15just as the Father knows Me, and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
10:16And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock, one shepherd.
10:17For this reason the Father loves Me: because I lay down My life, that I may take it again.
10:18No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
10:19Therefore a division arose again among the Jews because of these words.
10:20And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?”
10:21Others said, “These are not the words of a demon-possessed man. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
10:22Then the Feast of Dedication came in Jerusalem, and it was winter.
10:23And Jesus was walking in the temple, in Solomon’s Colonnade.
10:24The Jews, therefore, surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Anointed One, tell us plainly.”
10:25Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s Name, these testify concerning Me.
10:26But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you.
10:27My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
10:28And I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
10:29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
10:30I and the Father are one.”
10:31The Jews, therefore, took up stones again to stone Him.
10:32Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from My Father. For which of these works do you stone Me?”
10:33The Jews answered Him, saying, “We do not stone You for a good work, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a man, make Yourself God.”
10:34Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’?
10:35If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken—
10:36do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
10:37If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me.
10:38But if I do them, even if you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”
10:39Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped from their hand.
10:40And He went away again beyond the Jordan, to the place where John had first been immersing, and He remained there.
10:41And many came to Him and said, “John indeed did no sign, but everything John said concerning this Man was true.”
10:42And many believed in Him there.

Chapter 11

11:1Now a certain man was sick—Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
11:2It was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
11:3Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
11:4But when Jesus heard it, He said, “This sickness will not end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
11:5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
11:6Therefore, when He heard that he was sick, He remained two days in the place where He was.
11:7Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.”
11:8The disciples said to Him, “Teacher, the Jews were just seeking to stone You, and You are going there again?”
11:9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
11:10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
11:11He said these things, and after this He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going that I may awaken him.”
11:12His disciples, therefore, said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
11:13But Jesus had spoken concerning his death, while they thought that He was speaking of the rest of sleep.
11:14Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus has died.
11:15And I rejoice for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
11:16Therefore Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
11:17Therefore, when Jesus came, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.
11:18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.
11:19And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother.
11:20Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house.
11:21Martha, therefore, said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
11:22But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
11:23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
11:24Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
11:25Jesus said to her, “I AM the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he dies, will live.
11:26And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
11:27She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Anointed One, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
11:28And having said these things, she went away and called Mary her sister privately, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.”
11:29When she heard this, she rose quickly and came to Him.
11:30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met Him.
11:31Therefore the Jews who were with her in the house and were comforting her, when they saw Mary rise quickly and go out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
11:32Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
11:33Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in spirit and troubled Himself.
11:34And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”
11:36The Jews, therefore, said, “Behold, how He loved him!”
11:37But some of them said, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, also have kept this man from dying?”
11:38Jesus, therefore, again groaning within Himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
11:39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who had died, said to Him, “Lord, by now he stinks, for he has been dead four days.”
11:40Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
11:41Therefore they took away the stone from where the dead man had been laid. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me.
11:42And I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the crowd standing around I said it, that they may believe that You sent Me.”
11:43And having said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”
11:44And he who had died came forth, his feet and hands bound with burial cloths, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
11:45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him.
11:46But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
11:47Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this Man does many signs.
11:48If we leave Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
11:49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
11:50nor do you consider that it is better for us that one Man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish.”
11:51Now he did not say this of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation,
11:52and not for the nation only, but also that He might gather together into one the children of God who had been scattered abroad.
11:53Therefore from that day they took counsel together to kill Him.
11:54Jesus, therefore, no longer walked publicly among the Jews, but went away from there into the region near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim; and there He remained with His disciples.
11:55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, that they might purify themselves.
11:56Therefore they sought Jesus and said to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? Surely He will not come to the feast?”
11:57Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command that if anyone knew where He was, he should reveal it, so that they might seize Him.

Chapter 12

12:1Therefore, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had died and whom He had raised from the dead.
12:2There they made Him a supper, and Martha served; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.
12:3Then Mary took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
12:4Then one of His disciples—Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, who was about to deliver Him up—said,
12:5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred days’ wages and given to the poor?”
12:6Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the money bag, and used to take what was put into it.
12:7Jesus, therefore, said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial.
12:8For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”
12:9Therefore a great crowd of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but also that they might see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.
12:10But the chief priests took counsel that they might kill Lazarus also,
12:11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
12:12On the next day, a great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
12:13They took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out, “Save us, we pray! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord—the King of Israel!”
12:14And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, as it is written,
12:15“Do not fear, daughter of Zion. Behold, your King comes, sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
12:16His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written concerning Him, and that they had done these things to Him.
12:17Therefore the crowd that was with Him bore witness that He had called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead.
12:18For this reason the crowd also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.
12:19The Pharisees, therefore, said among themselves, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Behold, the world has gone after Him.”
12:20Now there were certain Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.
12:21These, therefore, came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
12:22Philip came and told Andrew; and again Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
12:23And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
12:24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
12:25He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.
12:26If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. And if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
12:27Now My soul is troubled. And what shall I say—‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
12:28Father, glorify Your Name.” Then a voice came from Heaven: “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
12:29Therefore the crowd that stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
12:30Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but because of you.
12:31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
12:32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.”
12:33He said this, signifying by what death He was about to die.
12:34The crowd answered Him, “We have heard from the Law that the Anointed One remains forever. How, then, do You say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
12:35Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; and he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.
12:36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and having gone away, He hid Himself from them.
12:37But though He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him,
12:38that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
12:39For this reason they could not believe, because Isaiah said again,
12:40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they might not see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn, and I might heal them.”
12:41Isaiah said these things when he saw His glory and spoke concerning Him.
12:42Nevertheless, even among the rulers many believed in Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue.
12:43For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
12:44And Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me does not believe in Me, but in Him who sent Me.
12:45And he who beholds Me beholds Him who sent Me.
12:46I have come as a light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.
12:47And if anyone hears My sayings and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
12:48He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings has one who judges him: the word that I spoke will judge him on the last day.
12:49For I did not speak from Myself; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a commandment—what I should say and what I should speak.
12:50And I know that His commandment is eternal life. Therefore whatever I speak, just as the Father has said to Me, so I speak.”

Chapter 13

13:1Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, loved them to the end.
13:2And during supper, the Devil having already put it into the heart of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to deliver Him up,
13:3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going to God,
13:4rose from supper, laid aside His garments, and taking a towel, wrapped it around His waist.
13:5Then He poured water into the basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.
13:6Therefore He came to Simon Peter, and Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”
13:7Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things.”
13:8Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
13:9Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
13:10Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed has no need except to wash his feet, but is wholly clean. And you are clean, but not all.”
13:11For He knew who was delivering Him up; for this reason He said, “You are not all clean.”
13:12Therefore, when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and reclined again, He said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?
13:13You call Me the Teacher and the Lord, and you speak rightly, for I am.
13:14If I, then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
13:15For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, you also should do.
13:16Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him.
13:17If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
13:18I do not speak concerning you all; I know whom I chose for Myself. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled: ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’
13:19From now on I tell you before it comes to pass, that when it comes to pass, you may believe that I AM.
13:20Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
13:21Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, saying, “Truly, truly, I say to you that one of you will deliver Me up.”
13:22The disciples, therefore, looked at one another, uncertain of whom He spoke.
13:23Now one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus’ side.
13:24Simon Peter, therefore, beckoned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.
13:25And leaning back upon the breast of Jesus, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
13:26Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give the morsel after I have dipped it.” And having dipped the morsel, He gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.
13:27And after the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Jesus, therefore, said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
13:28But none of those reclining at the table knew why He said this to him.
13:29For some thought, since Judas had the money bag, that Jesus said to him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
13:30Therefore, having received the morsel, he immediately went out. And it was night.
13:31When, therefore, he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in Him.
13:32If God has been glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself; indeed, He will glorify Him immediately.
13:33Little children, I am with you yet a little while. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, I now say also to you: Where I am going, you cannot come.
13:34A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
13:35By this all will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”
13:36Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now; but afterward you will follow Me.”
13:37Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for You.”
13:38Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.”

Chapter 14

14:1“Do not let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me.
14:2In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you.
14:3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also.
14:4And you know where I am going, and you know the way.”
14:5Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going. How can we know the way?”
14:6Jesus said to him, “I AM the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
14:7If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
14:8Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
14:9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father. How, then, do you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
14:10Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak from Myself; but the Father who remains in Me does the works.
14:11Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me; or else believe Me because of the works themselves.
14:12Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I am going to My Father.
14:13And whatever you ask in My Name, I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14:14If you ask anything in My Name I will do it.
14:15If you love Me, keep My commandments.
14:16And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, that He may remain with you forever:
14:17the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. But you know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.
14:18I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.
14:19Yet a little while, and the world sees Me no more; but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live.
14:20In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
14:21He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
14:22Judas—not Iscariot—said to Him, “Lord, what has happened that You are about to manifest Yourself to us and not to the world?”
14:23Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our dwelling with him.
14:24He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word that you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.
14:25These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you.
14:26But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things and remind you of all things that I said to you.
14:27Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
14:28You heard that I said to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.
14:29And now I have told you before it comes to pass, that when it comes to pass, you may believe.
14:30I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of this world comes, and he has nothing in Me.
14:31But so that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded Me, so I do. Rise, let us go from here.”

Chapter 15

15:1“I AM the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
15:2Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
15:3You are already clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.
15:4Remain in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you unless you remain in Me.
15:5I AM the vine; you are the branches. He who remains in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.
15:6If anyone does not remain in Me, he is cast out as a branch and withers; and they gather them and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
15:7If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.
15:8By this My Father is glorified: that you bear much fruit and become My disciples.
15:9As the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you. Remain in My love.
15:10If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.
15:11These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
15:12This is My commandment: that you love one another as I have loved you.
15:13Greater love has no one than this: that one lay down his life for his friends.
15:14You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.
15:15I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his lord is doing; but I have called you friends, because all things that I heard from My Father I made known to you.
15:16You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My Name, He may give you.
15:17These things I command you: that you love one another.
15:18If the world hates you, know that it hated Me before it hated you.
15:19If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world—rather, I chose you out of the world—therefore the world hates you.
15:20Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A slave is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will also keep yours.
15:21But all these things they will do to you because of My Name, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
15:22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
15:23He who hates Me hates My Father also.
15:24If I had not done among them the works that no one else has done, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both Me and My Father.
15:25But this happened that the word written in their Law might be fulfilled: ‘They hated Me without cause.’
15:26But when the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father—He will testify concerning Me.
15:27And you also will testify, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”

Chapter 16

16:1“These things I have spoken to you, that you may not fall away.
16:2They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when whoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God.
16:3And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father or Me.
16:4But I have spoken these things to you, that when the hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
16:5But now I am going away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
16:6But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
16:7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.
16:8And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment:
16:9concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
16:10concerning righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
16:11and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
16:12I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
16:13But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will tell you the things to come.
16:14He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.
16:15All things that the Father has are Mine. For this reason I said that He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.
16:16A little while, and you will not behold Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I am going to the Father.”
16:17Therefore some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He says to us: ‘A little while, and you will not behold Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
16:18Therefore they said, “What is this ‘little while’ of which He speaks? We do not know what He is saying.”
16:19Jesus knew, therefore, that they wished to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves concerning this, because I said, ‘A little while, and you will not behold Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’?
16:20Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will become joy.
16:21When a woman gives birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come; but when she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, because of the joy that a child has been born into the world.
16:22Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
16:23And in that day you will question Me about nothing. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in My Name, He will give you.
16:24Until now you have asked nothing in My Name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
16:25I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech; but an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly concerning the Father.
16:26In that day you will ask in My Name; and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you,
16:27for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from God.
16:28I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”
16:29His disciples said to Him, “Behold, now You speak plainly and use no figure of speech.
16:30Now we know that You know all things and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”
16:31Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?
16:32Behold, an hour is coming, and has now come, when you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
16:33These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but take courage—I have overcome the world.”

Chapter 17

17:1Jesus spoke these things, and lifting up His eyes to Heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,
17:2just as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to all whom You have given Him.
17:3And this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus the Anointed One, whom You sent.
17:4I glorified You on the earth. I completed the work that You gave Me to do.
17:5And now, Father, glorify Me with Yourself, with the glory that I had with You before the world was.
17:6I revealed Your Name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.
17:7Now they know that all things that You have given Me are from You.
17:8For the words that You gave Me I have given them; and they received them, and knew truly that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me.
17:9I ask for them. I do not ask for the world, but for those whom You have given Me, because they are Yours.
17:10And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them.
17:11And I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep in Your Name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are one.
17:12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your Name. I guarded those whom You have given Me, and not one of them was lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
17:13But now I am coming to You, and I speak these things in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.
17:14I have given them Your word; and the world hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
17:15I do not ask that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.
17:16They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
17:17Sanctify them in Your truth. Your word is truth.
17:18As You sent Me into the world, I also sent them into the world.
17:19And for their sake I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
17:20And I do not ask for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word,
17:21that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
17:22And the glory that You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one as We are one—
17:23I in them, and You in Me—that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You sent Me and loved them as You loved Me.
17:24Father, I desire that those whom You have given Me may also be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory that You gave Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
17:25Righteous Father, the world indeed did not know You, but I knew You; and these have known that You sent Me.
17:26And I made Your Name known to them, and will make it known, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Chapter 18

18:1Having said these things, Jesus went out with His disciples beyond the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which He and His disciples entered.
18:2And Judas, who delivered Him up, also knew the place, because Jesus often gathered there with His disciples.
18:3Judas, therefore, having received the cohort and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
18:4Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?”
18:5They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus said to them, “I AM.” And Judas, who delivered Him up, was standing with them.
18:6Therefore, when He said to them, “I AM,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
18:7Therefore He asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
18:8Jesus answered, “I told you that I AM. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,”
18:9that the word might be fulfilled which He had spoken: “Of those whom You have given Me, I did not lose even one.”
18:10Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus.
18:11Therefore Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given Me?”
18:12Then the cohort, the commander, and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound Him.
18:13And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
18:14Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to perish for the people.
18:15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.
18:16But Peter stood outside at the door. Therefore the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
18:17Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you not also one of this Man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
18:18Now the slaves and officers stood there, having made a charcoal fire, because it was cold; and they were warming themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
18:19The high priest, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning His disciples and His teaching.
18:20Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in a synagogue and in the temple, where the Jews always gather, and I spoke nothing in secret.
18:21Why do you question Me? Question those who heard what I spoke to them. Behold, they know what I said.”
18:22And when He had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is this how You answer the high priest?”
18:23Jesus answered him, “If I spoke wrongly, testify concerning the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?”
18:24Annas then sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
18:25Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, “Are you not also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
18:26One of the high priest’s slaves, a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”
18:27Therefore Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
18:28Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early; and they themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
18:29Pilate, therefore, went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”
18:30They answered and said to him, “If He were not doing evil, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”
18:31Pilate, therefore, said to them, “Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,”
18:32that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.
18:33Pilate, therefore, entered the governor’s headquarters again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
18:34Jesus answered him, “Do you say this from yourself, or did others tell you concerning Me?”
18:35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You up to me. What have You done?”
18:36Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If My Kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but now My Kingdom is not from here.”
18:37Pilate, therefore, said to Him, “Are You a king, then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world: that I may testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
18:38Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no fault in Him.
18:39But you have a custom that I should release one to you at the Passover. Do you wish, therefore, that I release to you the King of the Jews?”
18:40Then they all cried out again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.

Chapter 19

19:1Then, therefore, Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.
19:2And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns, placed it on His head, and put a purple garment around Him.
19:3And they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they kept striking Him with their hands.
19:4Pilate, therefore, went out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”
19:5Jesus, therefore, came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. And Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!”
19:6Therefore, when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”
19:7The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.”
19:8Therefore, when Pilate heard this word, he was even more afraid.
19:9And he entered the governor’s headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
19:10Pilate, therefore, said to Him, “Do You not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to crucify You, and authority to release You?”
19:11Jesus answered, “You would have no authority at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered Me up to you has the greater sin.”
19:12From then on Pilate sought to release Him; but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this Man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”
19:13Therefore, when Pilate heard this word, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
19:14Now it was the Preparation of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!”
19:15But they cried out, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
19:16Then he delivered Him up to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led Him away.
19:17And bearing His cross, He went out to the place called the Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha,
19:18where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the middle.
19:19Now Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. And it was written: “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
19:20Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
19:21Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am King of the Jews.”’”
19:22Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
19:23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, a part for each soldier, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top throughout.
19:24Therefore they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast a lot for it, to determine whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast a lot.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.
19:25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary of Clopas, and Mary the Magdalene.
19:26Therefore, when Jesus saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
19:27Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
19:28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst.”
19:29Now a vessel full of sour wine was standing there. And they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it upon a hyssop stalk, and brought it to His mouth.
19:30Therefore, when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He gave up the spirit.
19:31Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath—for that Sabbath was a high day—asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.
19:32Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him.
19:33But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
19:34But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
19:35And he who saw has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he speaks the truth, that you also may believe.
19:36For these things came to pass that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken.”
19:37And again another Scripture says, “They will look on Him whom they pierced.”
19:38And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave permission. Therefore he came and took away the body of Jesus.
19:39And Nicodemus also came—he who at first came to Jesus by night—bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about one hundred pounds.
19:40Then they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the custom of the Jews in preparing for burial.
19:41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
19:42Therefore, because of the Jews’ Preparation, and because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus there.

Chapter 20

20:1Now on the first day of the week, Mary the Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
20:2Therefore she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they laid Him.”
20:3Therefore Peter went out, and the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb.
20:4And the two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first.
20:5And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.
20:6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there,
20:7and the cloth that had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself.
20:8Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, also went in; and he saw and believed.
20:9For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead.
20:10Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
20:11But Mary stood outside near the tomb, weeping. And as she wept, she stooped down into the tomb,
20:12and saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
20:13And they said to her, “Woman, why do you weep?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they laid Him.”
20:14And having said these things, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but did not know that it was Jesus.
20:15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Lord, if You carried Him away, tell me where You laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
20:16Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “My Teacher!”
20:17Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father. But go to My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’”
20:18Mary the Magdalene came and reported to the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had said these things to her.
20:19Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace to you.”
20:20And having said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
20:21Therefore Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you. As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
20:22And having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
20:23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
20:24Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, who was called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.
20:25Therefore the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in His hands, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
20:26And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in the midst and said, “Peace to you.”
20:27Then He said to Thomas, “Bring your finger here, and see My hands; and bring your hand, and put it into My side. And do not be unbelieving, but believing.”
20:28And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
20:29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, Thomas, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
20:30Therefore Jesus also did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book.
20:31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Son of God, and that believing, you may have life in His Name.

Chapter 21

21:1After these things Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias; and He revealed Himself in this way:
21:2Simon Peter, Thomas who was called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together.
21:3Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also are going with you.” They went out and immediately entered the boat, and that night they caught nothing.
21:4But when morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
21:5Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered Him, “No.”
21:6And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” Therefore they cast it, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.
21:7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around himself—for he was stripped—and cast himself into the sea.
21:8But the other disciples came in the small boat—for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits away—dragging the net full of fish.
21:9Then, when they came to land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish laid on it, and bread.
21:10Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.”
21:11Simon Peter went aboard and drew the net to land, full of large fish—one hundred fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
21:12Jesus said to them, “Come and eat.” And none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord.
21:13Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise.
21:14This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.
21:15Therefore, when they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.”
21:16He said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.”
21:17He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.
21:18Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you fastened your own clothes and walked where you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will fasten your clothes and carry you where you do not wish to go.”
21:19Now He spoke this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And having said this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”
21:20Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned back on His breast at the supper and said, “Lord, who is he who delivers You up?”
21:21Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?”
21:22Jesus said to him, “If I desire that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”
21:23Therefore this word went out among the brothers, that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I desire that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”
21:24This is the disciple who testifies concerning these things and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.
21:25And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. So be it.
