Chapter 1

1:1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we beheld, and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Life—
1:2and the Life appeared; we have seen it, and we testify and declare to you the eternal Life, which was with the Father and was revealed to us—
1:3that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus the Anointed One.
1:4And these things we write to you, that your joy may be full.
1:5And this is the message that we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
1:6If we say, “We have fellowship with Him,” yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
1:7But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of His Son Jesus the Anointed One cleanses us from every sin.
1:8If we say, “We have no sin,” we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1:9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from every unrighteousness.
1:10If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Chapter 2

2:1My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus the Anointed One, the Righteous One—
2:2and He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.
2:3And by this we know that we know Him: if we keep His commandments.
2:4The one who says, “I know Him,” yet does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
2:5But whoever keeps His word, truly in him the love of God has been made complete. By this we know that we are in Him.
2:6The one who says he remains in Him ought himself also to walk as He walked.
2:7Beloved, I do not write a new commandment to you, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you heard from the beginning.
2:8Again, I write a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light now shines.
2:9The one who says he is in the light, yet hates his brother, is in darkness until now.
2:10The one who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause of stumbling in him.
2:11But the one who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
2:12I write to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven through His Name.
2:13I write to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, young children, because you know the Father.
2:14I wrote to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I wrote to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God remains in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
2:15Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him,
2:16for all that is in the world—the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life—is not of the Father, but of the world.
2:17And the world is passing away, and its desire; but the one who does the will of God remains forever.
2:18Young children, it is the last hour; and as you heard that the opponent of the Anointed One is coming, even now many opponents of the Anointed One have arisen. By this we know that it is the last hour.
2:19They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us. But they went out so that it might be revealed that not all are of us.
2:20And you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
2:21I did not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
2:22Who is the liar except the one who denies that Jesus is the Anointed One? This one is the opponent of the Anointed One, who denies the Father and the Son.
2:23Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.
2:24As for you, let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
2:25And this is the promise that He promised us—eternal life.
2:26These things I wrote to you concerning those who lead you astray.
2:27And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie—and as it taught you—remain in Him.
2:28And now, little children, remain in Him, so that when He appears, we may have boldness and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.
2:29If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness has been begotten of Him.

Chapter 3

3:1See what love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. Because of this the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
3:2Beloved, now we are children of God, and what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.
3:3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, even as He is pure.
3:4Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
3:5And you know that He appeared to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.
3:6Everyone who remains in Him does not sin; everyone who sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
3:7Little children, let no one lead you astray; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.
3:8The one who practices sin is of the Devil, because the Devil sins from the beginning. For this reason the Son of God appeared: that He might destroy the works of the Devil.
3:9Everyone who has been begotten of God does not sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God.
3:10By this the children of God and the children of the Devil are revealed: everyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
3:11For this is the message that you heard from the beginning: that we should love one another,
3:12not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his works were evil, and those of his brother were righteous.
3:13Do not wonder, my brothers, if the world hates you.
3:14We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. The one who does not love his brother remains in death.
3:15Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.
3:16By this we know love: He laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
3:17But whoever has the goods of the world and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him—how does the love of God remain in him?
3:18My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
3:19And by this we know that we are of the truth, and will assure our hearts before Him,
3:20for if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and He knows all things.
3:21Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have boldness toward God.
3:22And whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things pleasing before Him.
3:23And this is His commandment: that we believe in the Name of His Son Jesus the Anointed One and love one another, even as He gave us commandment.
3:24And the one who keeps His commandments remains in Him, and He in him; and by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit whom He gave us.

Chapter 4

4:1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
4:2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus the Anointed One has come in the flesh is of God,
4:3and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus the Anointed One has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the opponent of the Anointed One, which you heard was coming, and now is already in the world.
4:4You are of God, little children, and you have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
4:5They are of the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world hears them.
4:6We are of God. The one who knows God hears us; the one who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
4:7Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; and everyone who loves has been begotten of God and knows God.
4:8The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
4:9By this the love of God was revealed among us: God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.
4:10In this is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
4:11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
4:12No one has ever seen God. If we love one another, God remains in us, and His love has been made complete in us.
4:13By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us: because He has given us of His Spirit.
4:14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.
4:15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God.
4:16And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God in him.
4:17By this love has been made complete with us, so that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because even as He is, so also are we in this world.
4:18There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears has not been made complete in love.
4:19We love Him because He first loved us.
4:20If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?
4:21And this commandment we have from Him: that the one who loves God must also love his brother.

Chapter 5

5:1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Anointed One has been begotten of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves the one begotten of Him.
5:2By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments.
5:3For this is the love of God: that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
5:4For everyone who has been begotten of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
5:5Who is the one who overcomes the world, if not the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
5:6This is He who came through water and blood—Jesus the Anointed One—not in water only, but in the water and the blood; and the Spirit is the One who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
5:7For there are three who testify in Heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
5:8And there are three who testify on the earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
5:9If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God, that He has testified concerning His Son.
5:10The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has testified concerning His Son.
5:11And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
5:12The one who has the Son has life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
5:13I wrote these things to you who believe in the Name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe in the Name of the Son of God.
5:14And this is the boldness that we have toward Him: if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
5:15And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests we have asked of Him.
5:16If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin that is not to death, he shall ask, and He will give him life—that is, to those who do not sin to death. There is sin to death; I do not say that he should ask concerning it.
5:17All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin that is not to death.
5:18We know that everyone who has been begotten of God does not sin; but He who was begotten of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.
5:19We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the power of the evil one.
5:20And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus the Anointed One. This One is the true God and the eternal Life.
5:21Little children, guard yourselves from idols. So be it.
