Chapter 1

1:1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,
1:2“Thus says the LORD of Hosts: ‘This people says, “The time has not come—the time for the house of the LORD to be built.”’”
1:3And the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying,
1:4“Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies waste?”
1:5And now, thus says the LORD of Hosts: “Consider your ways.
1:6You have sown much, but brought in little; you eat, but are not satisfied; you drink, but never have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages puts them into a bag with holes.”
1:7Thus says the LORD of Hosts: “Consider your ways.
1:8Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the house; and I will be pleased with it, and I will be glorified,” says the LORD.
1:9“You looked for much, but behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” declares the LORD of Hosts. “Because My house lies desolate, while each of you runs to his own house.
1:10Therefore, because of you, the heavens have withheld the dew, and the land has withheld its produce.
1:11And I called for a drought upon the land and upon the mountains, upon the grain, the new wine, and the oil, upon what the ground brings forth, upon man and beast, and upon all the labor of the hands.”
1:12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared before the LORD.
1:13Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the message of the LORD, saying, “I am with you,” declares the LORD.
1:14And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God,
1:15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

Chapter 2

2:1In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying,
2:2“Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
2:3‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Compared with it, is it not as nothing in your eyes?
2:4Yet now, be strong, O Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD, ‘and be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD, ‘and work, for I am with you,’ declares the LORD of Hosts.
2:5‘As for the covenant I made with you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
2:6For thus says the LORD of Hosts: ‘Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
2:7And I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all the nations will come; and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the LORD of Hosts.
2:8‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ declares the LORD of Hosts.
2:9‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says the LORD of Hosts; ‘and in this place I will give peace,’ declares the LORD of Hosts.”
2:10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying,
2:11Thus says the LORD of Hosts: “Now ask the priests about the Law, saying,
2:12‘If one carries holy flesh in the fold of his garment, and the fold touches bread, or stew, or wine, or oil, or any food, does it become holy?’” And the priests answered, “No.”
2:13Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean through contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” And the priests answered, “It becomes unclean.”
2:14And Haggai answered, “So is this people, and so is this nation before Me,” declares the LORD, “and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.
2:15And now, consider carefully from this day onward, before one stone was laid upon another in the temple of the LORD.
2:16From that time, when one came to a heap expecting twenty measures, there were only ten; and when one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.
2:17I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you did not turn to Me,” declares the LORD.
2:18“Consider carefully from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month—from the day when the foundation of the temple of the LORD was laid—consider it carefully.
2:19Is the seed still in the barn? Until now, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have borne no fruit. From this day I will bless you.”
2:20And the word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,
2:21“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, ‘I will shake the heavens and the earth.
2:22And I will overturn the throne of kingdoms and destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; I will overturn the chariot and its riders, and the horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
2:23In that day,’ declares the LORD of Hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant,’ declares the LORD, ‘and set you as a signet, for I have chosen you,’ declares the LORD of Hosts.”
